Michael J. Fox’s life has entailed a lot, and as his many fans long have been aware, not all of it has been for the cameras.

Q: Why did it say that Ryan Seacrest’s last “Live With Kelly and Ryan” episode was recorded earlier, when the show is supposed to be live?

– Judy Marks, Reading, Pa.

A: Given the occasion that Seacrest’s sign-off was, the show’s staff likely wanted extra time to get things right and as gaffe-free as possible. It also was a way to ensure that everything got in without the show running over its allotted hour, which couldn’t occur with a syndicated program being sent to many local stations across the country. That overrun would have been easy to happen, given all the clips shown from Seacrest’s tenure on the program ... plus his wanting to address family members who were in that day’s audience, plus the presence of First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as a guest, plus the presentation of a celebratory cake to Seacrest by his successor Mark Consuelos (co-host Kelly Ripa’s husband).

The five-time Primetime Emmy Award winner was at the height of his popularity as an actor when he received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1991, and both his private and public aspects get considerable attention in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which Apple TV+ debuts Friday, May 12. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) – whose wife, Elisabeth Shue, worked with Fox in the “Back to the Future” franchise –the film factors dramatic re-creations into Fox-narrated recollections of his experiences.

Though Fox admits he had early difficulty emotionally in dealing with his health assessment, he ultimately channeled the situation into the nonprofit Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. It has financed more than $1 billion in projects, including a recent

breakthrough involving a spinal fluid test. Fox also has traced his life and times in several memoirs: “Lucky Man,” “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist” and “No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality.”

Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Fox the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an acknowledgment of his significance as a member of the entertainment community. After he moved to Los Angeles from his native Canada, it wasn’t long before he was cast as politically minded Alex P. Keaton in the sitcom “Family Ties”; during its seven-season run, he also scored such movie successes as the three “Back to the Future” films, “Teen Wolf” and “The Secret of My Success,” plus image departures in “Bright Lights, Big City” (co-starring Fox’s wife, Tracy Pollan) and “Casualties of War.”

After making such early-1990s comedy films as “Doc Hollywood” and “For Love or Money,” Fox returned to weekly sitcom work in “Spin City.” Midway through that show’s run, he went public with his Parkinson’s news, and Charlie Sheen succeeded him in the series. However, Fox earned later acclaim for recurring guest roles on “Boston Legal,” “Rescue Me” and “The Good Wife.”

In 2012, Fox made a bid for series work again with “The Michael J. Fox Show,” which incorporated aspects of his real life as he played a TV newsman. It lasted less than one season, but afterward, Fox reunited with earlier movie co-star and longtime friend Kiefer Sutherland in a guest arc on the latter’s show “Designated Survivor.”

Though Fox maintains that he has retired from acting, he notes that could change under the right circumstances. For now, he’s back in the limelight by telling his own story in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” and it’s a singular tale that’s worth relating – and hearing – firsthand.

More A-listers do good as HGTV’s ‘Celebrity IOU’ returns

Jonathan Scott says the renovations on “Celebrity IOU” are always good for an ugly cry for all involved. And he says the projects in the upcoming new season are no exception. Premiering Monday, May 15, on HGTV, the new round picks up with he and fellow “Property Brother” Drew back at it helping celebrities give surprise home renovations to deserving friends and mentors. So in the eight episodes, they’ll roll up their sleeves and get to work alongside such celebs as Kristin Chenoweth, Glenn Close, Jay Leno, Taraji P. Henson, Derek Hough and Kristin Davis.

In Monday’s season opener, that do-gooder is model and former “Project Runway” host Heidi Klum, who gamely jumped right in to give Lucia, her housekeeper of 17 years, the fabulous and functional home of her dreams, complete with an open concept living area and large kitchen suitable for family gatherings.

“Heidi Klum is absolutely fearless and literally scaled the roof of Lucia’s house to bring this renovation home for Lucia and her family,” notes Jonathan Scott.

“Heidi jumped into any job we gave her to see Lucia get the upgrades she needed,” Drew Scott adds, “including building her the kitchen of her dreams complete with state-of-the-art appliances and a huge island for cooking and entertaining.”

The brothers are always impressed by the hidden skills and talents of these celebs, and in this round they mention the design skills of Chenoweth and Drew Barrymore and the willingness of Close to jump on a backhoe and level a decrepit old shed as particularly noteworthy. And for honorable mention, they point to Leno’s participation not long after a January traffic accident that left him badly injured.

“Jay Leno had just broken his collarbone, ribs and busted his knee in a motorcycle accident,” Jonathan Scott says. “But he still came in every day and got right to work. Nothing would stop him and that was so moving to see. And then it’s the look on homeowners’ faces when they see their new space – everyone is crying. Getting to be a part of that hugely emotional moment is something we’ll never take for granted.”

A very inclusive rendering of “Richard III” offers a unique “winter of our discontent.”

Being televised on PBS’ “Great Performances” Friday, May 19 (check local listings), the “Shakespeare in the Park” production – taped last summer in New York’s Central Park – casts female Danai Gurira (“Black Panther”) in the male title role and “Oklahoma!” Tony honoree Ali Stroker, who uses a wheelchair, as power-hungry monarch Richard’s put-upon wife Lady Anne. Sharon Washington, who was Lady Anne in a three-decades-earlier staging, appears as Queen Margaret.

“It was a very special opportunity,” the pleasant Stroker recalls. “It was always on my bucket list to do Shakespeare. It was funny, because I’d kind of started working on Shakespeare in a class and with my husband during the pandemic, when we had so much time. Then, this came along and I thought, ‘Wow! This is perfect timing.”’

Stroker enjoyed playing what she deems Lady Anne’s “many sides. In this story, she’s desperate, and Richard is so cunning ... ‘evil,’ some people might label him. Casting Richard with a woman added really cool layers, and Danai is just fabulous. We had a great time. It was a blast every night.”

It also was a challenge, Stroker admits, since she was expecting her first child at the time. “To do a show while you’re pregnant is really special,” she reflects, “because it’s like you’re doing it with your baby.”

Though she might not be in that condition if she tackled any more works by the Bard, Stroker would like to have such acting chances: “It’s its own genre. I love musical theater, which is so heightened, and it’s the same way with Shakespeare. The language is so different from what we’re used to.”

As a relatively new mom, Stroker is spending 2023 performing her one-night “An Evening With Ali Stroker” concert and doing speaking engagements, so she can continue working without being away very long. “He’s still really little,” she says of her son, “and I’m needed at home. I also have an animation studio at home, so these are the things that work well.”

George Clooney and Julia Roberts bring their considerable onscreen charisma to this otherwise lightweight 2022 romantic comedy in which they star as David and Georgia Cotton, a bickering divorced couple who travel to Bali to keep their soon-to-wed daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever, “Dopesick”) from making the same mistake they made 25 years earlier. Billie Lourd (“American Horror Story”) also stars.

Dan Klores (“Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story”) co-directed (with Fisher Stevens) and wrote this 2007 documentary that examines the case of Burt Pugach, a married New York lawyer whose obsession with much-younger Linda Riss eventually led to a horrific act for which he spent 14 years in prison.

“Movie: I Melt With You”

The past becomes the present for several pals from college — played by Thomas Jane (”Hung”), Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) and Christian McKay — in this 2011 drama.
