Q: Will “Blue Bloods” be back next season? — George Ryan, Grand Junction, Colo.

A: The answer to that is finally “Yes,” though it was held up for a while. One of CBS’ most reliably performing shows will get a 14th season, but the cast and crew (including Tom Selleck, who had to have gotten a sizable salary during his “Magnum, p.I.” years) had to agree to budget cuts to make that happen … reportedly encompassing a 25-percent reduction for the law-and-order-family drama’s top-billed stars. Along with such other programs as producer Dick Wolf’s NBC shows, which recently got renewals after making similar budgetary concessions, this is an indication of the current series-production model that is seeing networks seeking reduced budgets no matter how successful a series is. “Blue Bloods” surely is one of television’s top success stories now, also given how many other outlets run repeats of it (ION Television, Pluto, etc.), but this situation demonstrates that no show is immune in the industry’s current economy.

Kitchen closing: ‘Rachael Ray’ bids farewell to daytime TV

After 17 seasons of weekday food and fun, the kitchen is closing for “Rachael Ray.”

That’s the program that goes by that name, not the title personality, who is already looking toward new media horizons for herself.

The last episode of her syndicated talk show airs Wednesday, May 24, and it’s sure to celebrate many of the top moments Ray has put forth over the better part of the past two decades — both as a culinary and lifestyle authority, and as someone whose interviewing skills have developed considerably during the show’s run.

“I’m a good cook who learned how to talk to anybody over time,” the ever-lively Ray says in assessing the longevity of her eponymous show, “and that’s because of practice. I have always believed that anybody in America can be successful at anything if they can close their eyes and see themselves trying it. If you’re not ashamed of where you come from, you never have to be ashamed of where you

might go.”

When “Rachael Ray” began in 2006, its bubbly host already was widely known for the cooking shows she made principally for Food Network, including “30 Minute Meals,” a concept the former waitress and pub manager originated while she was a buyer for an upscale food market in Upstate New York. She parlayed that job into classes she taught to customers, which drew the interest of an area television station; the segments she did there paved the way for NBC’s “Today” to feature her regularly, then for Food Network to begin showcasing her. Recurring spots on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” progressed to the point where Winfrey became an executive producer of Ray’s own talk show from its inception.

Throughout the run of “Rachael Ray,” the host has had a true partner in her husband, musician and lawyer John Cusimano. Besides contributing melodically to the program, he effectively became Ray’s co-host when the coronavirus pandemic forced her to shift production from a Manhattan studio to the couple’s home in Lake Luzerne, New York.

As for what lies ahead for Ray, she intends to work again with many of her “Rachael Ray” colleagues in channeling much of her focus and energy into her new venture, Free Food Studios. It has a commitment for an A&E series tentatively titled “Rachael Ray Meals in Minutes,” the first effort in a new library of programming she intends to build with fellow producers she has worked with before. She also plans to nurture new talent in the foodshow space.

“There’s tons of great content out there, now more than ever,” Ray reasons. “We’re going to be working on platforms on multiple levels. The world is constantly changing in that way, and I feel so lucky as an American woman in her 50s to still be relevant. It’s exciting and cool, and it proves the point that you can do anything you want.”

Mermaid madness: Netflix dives into the world of professional mermaiding

From the producers of “Queer Eye” – and, most recently, “The Secrets of Hillsong” – comes a new, quirky, four-part documentary series helmed by Oscar-winning director Cynthia Wade (“Freeheld,” 2008). “MerPeople” takes a deep dive into the expansive, whimsical world of professional “mermaiding” when it premieres Tuesday, May 23, on Netflix.

Per Netflix’s description, “MerPeople” takes viewers on “a journey of passion and perseverance,” welcoming worldwide audiences into “the whimsical world of professional mermaiding, where people’s passion for swimming in fins has exploded into a half-billion-dollar industry,” showcasing everything from “dazzling small-town shows in Florida to the crowning of the King and Queen of the Seas in the Bahamas.”

For those who don’t know, “mermaiding,” as it’s been dubbed, is exactly what it sounds like: people (strong swimmers, at that) don mermaid tails and other fun, aquatic accessories to perform at parties, events and aquariums – even children’s swimming lessons. They model, work in movies and on television, keep social media presences … Long ‘tail’ short, these performers live and breathe the mermaid life, cultivating a one-of-a-kind fantasy experience.

It’s hard to pinpoint who first coined the term, but the industry has grown significantly over the past decade, with some of the first wellknown mermaids like Hannah Mermaid, Mahina Mermaid and Mermaid Linden all swimming towards notoriety as early as 2004.

The docuseries focuses on current pros in the mermaiding industry, with the inaugural episode ‘shellebrating’ some truly talented folks. Viewers will be introduced to “The Mertailor,” a mermaid tail maker and aspiring entrepreneur, who is interested in starting a “mermaid aquarium” and training center for future performers; former mermaids from the iconic Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Spring Hill, Florida, which has been putting on mermaid shows for the past six decades; and Chè Monique, the founder of the Society of Fat Mermaids, both a welcoming community and a size-inclusive store, selling merchandise and apparel for mermaid enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes.

In an interview with Insider, Scout Productions’ head of documentaries, Joel Chiodi, explained his goal in producing shows like “MerPeople,” hoping to both broaden people’s minds and bring them together in a fantastical way: “You’re seeing nonbinary merms, Black women; it makes no political statement but it’s like, ‘Let’s celebrate everything’” – professional mermaids included.

All things must end, it seems. Friendships, relationships, reality shows … nothing can last forever. But in true “Vanderpump” tradition, all that ends, ends with a bang.

The explosive “Vanderpump Rules Reunion Special” commences for a 10th year – split into two non-stop, drama-filled installments – with “Part 1” premiering Wednesday, May 24, on Bravo.

Each and every season of “Vanderpump” serves hot gossip and jaw-dropping moments, but it’s safe to say that Season 10 truly takes the cake. Avid ‘Vander-lovers’ will know that February and March were show-stopping months for some of the show’s regulars, and as the season wraps up, fans are desperate to know where the Toms (Schwartz and Sandoval), Raquel, Ariana and Katie all stand.

To recap, “Vanderpump” returned with new episodes in February of this year, following the split between Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney. When Schwartz and “Vanderpump” regular Raquel Leviss engaged in some public flirting, fans were hungry for more details — and as March rolled in, that’s exactly what they got (and then some). News soon broke that Leviss and “Vanderpump’s” other Tom, Tom Sandoval, had engaged in a months-long affair, resulting in the end of his nine-year relationship with Ariana Madix.

Though Leviss and Sandoval issued public apologies (both to their partners and fans), reactions from the remaining “Vanderpump” cast have been kept mostly under wraps, saved for viewers to witness first hand. That being said, an unidentified source told US Weekly that the cast was “out of control” during the March taping.

Hosted by Andy Cohen (“Watch What Happens Live”), the Season 10 reunion is set to be “a real reckoning” (per Cohen) as it was filmed only days after news of Madix and Sandoval broke. Cohen continued, hinting at what unfolded during the soon-to-be-aired taping: “If you are looking to hear their story — you will. If you are looking for them to be confronted to their face about what they’ve done, in what I would say in an aggressive manner — you will get it.” Cohen also filmed one-on-one interviews with Madix, Sandoval and Leviss, and teased more potential content, claiming that extended versions of all interviews will be released after the special.
