Q: It’s very clever how there’s an edition of “NBC Nightly News” for kids. How long has that been running?

A: It began as a venture for NBC News’ YouTube channel in the spring of 2020, and that fall, the network also started adding it to its on-air weekend lineup for young viewers. Weeknight anchor Lester Holt hosts the program, which uses the resources of the full news division; a recent edition had reports by Anne Thompson and Erin McLaughlin, also frequent contributors to the evening broadcasts.

Hot TV: ‘Hot Wheels’ competition comes to NBC

Unlock some memories and kick it into high gear with NBC’s newest competition series, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge.”

Premiering Tuesday, May 30, the unscripted show is equal parts “nostalgia and creativity” (per NBC) as each contestant overhauls one of their most beloved and memorable vehicles, ultimately transforming it from an average automobile into their dream car. Hosted by “Top Gear’s” Rutledge Wood and featuring a panel of car-loving celebrity guests, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” is inspired by childhood fun and a healthy dose of friendly competition.

NBC describes its new 10-episode competition as follows: “Each episode will invite two passionate car fans and Hot Wheels lovers into the Chrome Zone, where they will face off in each transforming an ordinary vehicle into an extraordinary Hot Wheels showstopper, inspired by personal stories and pop culture touchstones. Working alongside a team of automotive magicians known as ‘The Car Pool,’ the two Superfans will manufacture their designs in high-tech, decked-out garages.” There is also a chance to raise the stakes via “the Inspiration-

ator 5000, a larger-than-life vending machine that will rev up in each episode to present the Superfans with a twist in the road.”

While Wood acts as host, he will surely not be the only familiar face seen during the wild ride. Among the celebrity judges making an appearance on “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” are “Community” and “The Soup’s” Joel McHale; comedian and star of the recently finished sitcom “Black-ish,” Anthony Anderson; WWE Superstar Ettore Ewen, better known by the moniker Big E; and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star and “America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, two famous car lovers are also welcomed to the show’s premiere season as guest judges: former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno and star of the Fast and Furious saga, Sung Kang.

Leno, who also hosts the web series “Jay Leno’s Garage,” is the proud owner of roughly 180 cars and 160 motorcycles, valued at more than $52 million. Widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable car fanatics in Hollywood, Leno will bring his insight and interest to “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” as he assesses the final products presented by the eager contestants.

As for Kang, who originated the role of Han Lue in the third Fast and Furious film, subtitled “Tokyo Drift” (2006), the actor has collected several custom cars over the years. These include a Nissan 240SX, a 1967 Mustang Fastback and the 1973 Datsun 240Z he restored himself and which he “affectionately refers to as ‘Fugu Z,’ according to the Rubber B website, which featured Kang in a promotional profile for the Swiss watch brand.

Corie Henson, executive vice-president of unscripted programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, announced her excitement for the program in a statement, saying, “Everyone remembers their first car, the life experiences they had and the friends who came along for the ride. Hot Wheels is a legendary brand with broad appeal that has created a space for imaginations to run free. We are so thrilled to partner with Mattel to combine this nostalgia with fantastical, extreme car transformations.”

Roadside renos: Lindsey Kurowski revives motels in new Magnolia show

Cute, unique, boutique – in the age of social media, it takes a one-of-a-kind experience to book rooms in roadside motels. Those who get it right make it big, and thankfully, there’s someone to help: Lindsey Kurowski. The premiere of this reno-wonder’s latest show, “Motel Rescue,” airs Monday, May 29, on the Magnolia Network.

The series sees Kurowski hitting the road once again in seven hour-long episodes, returning after the completion of two massive motel renovations in her previous Magnolia series, “Inn the Works.” While the last iteration followed Kurowski through the in-depth renovation of one location per season (Oak Knoll Lodge in California and the Springs Inn in Massachusetts), this new series will instead take Kurowski’s talents nationwide as she visits a different establishment each episode, highlighting various locales across the United States. At each stop, Kurowski and her creative team tackle a tough renovation job, helping struggling motel owners who need some assistance getting back on track.

One such lucky motel is the Larian Motel in Tombstone, Arizona, which has been owned and operated by the Anderson family for the past 43 years. When the quaint (if not a little outdated) motel found itself in desperate need of a 21st century update, the family reached out to Kurowski and the team for a little TLC. The series follows as the Andersons welcome the “Motel Rescue” team into the belly of their business, receiving a fun, western-inspired update while, in turn, the “Rescue” team got the chance to experience some of the best Tombstone has to offer – even riding the stagecoach and taking a meetand-greet with mayor Dusty Escapule, according to The Tombstone News.

The Larian’s renovated guest rooms embody a fun, midwestern feel. Terracotta and rich wood ground the space, while vintage-inspired artwork and a made-to-order, rope-spun “howdy” sign add whimsy and bring the theme to life.

Kurowski is certainly no stranger to making things beautiful. Prior to her string of renovation shows, Kurowski spent her days running Knotty Pines, the company she founded and continues to helm as CEO. Based in Southern California, Knotty Pines is a design company that prides itself on making one-of-a-kind experiential works and displays for marketing and artistic purposes, working on projects for companies such as Nike, ClifBar, Adidas, Live Nation, NBC, United Airlines and more. The company produces pieces using laser cutting, printing, welding, acrylic mounting, neon lights and more. During her television renos, Kurowski puts the whole team to task, utilizing skills from every department in the company to add unique touches that separate her spaces from the rest.

Turning up the ‘Talent’: ‘AGT’ returns with Season 18

“AGT” auditions have finished, and Howie Mandel is back to making jokes on his Instagram stories. That can only mean one thing: It’s time for Season 18. A brand-new, bombshell season of “America’s Got Talent” begins with a two-hour premiere, airing Tuesday, May 30, on NBC.

Returning for his fourth season as host, Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) is joined by his panel of celebrity judges, now staples of the popular talent competition show. Howie Mandel (“St. Elsewhere”) returns for his 14th season, while Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”) joins for her 10th, Simon Cowell (“American Idol”) for his eighth, and Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) for her fourth.

The competition begins with a round of auditions, as the judges open the “AGT” stage to starlets from across the country and beyond, welcoming talent of all kinds to perform their various acts – showcasing everything from singing, dancing and acting, to comedy, magic, stunts and more, with each act hopeful for a spot in the main competition. Only a lucky few will continue on to the live episodes, in which the remaining few must compete against each other for both the audience and judges’ votes. “The Winner Takes It All,” so to speak, as one competitor will eventually be crowned, awarded a massive cash prize and the life-altering chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip.

Early into taping Season 18, however, People magazine reported that a wrench had been thrown in “AGT’s” usual song and dance, as “the famously sharp-tongued Cowell [...] lost his voice.”

In an interview with the publication, Vergara quipped: “Who would have thought that season 18 would have left Simon literally speechless?” She went on, jokingly claiming that she would take over the other judge’s responsibilities. “And, of course, Simon nominated me to give his reactions. He’s passing notes to me like we are back in school.”

Mandel went on to continue the riff: “There are no words to describe the excitement level of Season 18. That’s why it’s serendipitous that this is the season that Simon lost his voice finally.”

Despite the jokes, Season 18 continued on without a hitch (once Cowell returned to his usual snarky self, that is).
