Q: Has “ S.W..A.T.” been canceled? – Al Lerner, via e-mail A: CBS canceled the police-drama reboot, but then “uncanceled” it after a few days. That owes largely to a big outcry from the show’s fans, which was fortified by a statement from star and executive producer Shemar Moore, who expressed (with abundant frankness) his disappointment with the network’s first decision about the show for the 2023-24 lineup. That came down to a matter of money, since CBS wanted to pay the same licensing fee fior a seventh season, when costs would go up for such expenses as the salaries of regular cast members. In the end, CBS reversed itself and ordered a series-concluding Season 7 that will consist of 13 episodes rather than the more typical 22, saving some of the cost that way.

Boldly going: ‘Star Trek’ prequel explores ‘Strange New Worlds’ again

A prequel series in one of sci-fi’s most iconic franchises is ready to go, boldly, back to the roots of the saga.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” begins its 10-episode second season Thursday, June 15, on Paramount+, as it continues the exploits of the starship Enterprise when it was under the command of Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” 2022), the predecessor of the vessel’s legendary later skipper, James T. Kirk (played by “The Vampire Diaries’” Paul Wesley, who reprises the recurring role in Season 2). Spun off from another prequel show, “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Strange New Worlds” has even more in store for fans: A third season already has been ordered, ahead of the premiere of Season 2.

“We have tried to harken back to some of the values and styles of the original series that got those of us who are a little older ignited on our ‘Star Trek’ journeys,” explains executive producer Akiva Goldsman. “In doing so, we’ve tried to look back and interpolate some parts of the original series that

might not have made it to the screen, some things that might have happened just before Jim Kirk took over the Enterprise. And, as such, some familiar faces are finding new life.”

Mount brought his Pike portrayal over from “Star Trek: Discovery,” which also featured Ethan Peck (“In Time,” 2011) as Spock and Rebecca Romijn (“X-Men,” 2000) as Number One before they made the journey to “Strange New Worlds.” Nurse Chapel (played by Jess Bush, “Playing For Keeps”) and Ensign Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding, “Broadway Whodunit: Escape From Camp Eerie,” 2020) are among other long-familiar characters who make their “Strange New Worlds” presence known. The second season of “Strange New Worlds” also includes Carol Kane (“Hunters”) in a recurring role.

“There was something about ‘Star Trek’ that was so far off the radar for me,” reflects “Hell on Wheels” alum Mount, who also is the character Black Bolt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It wasn’t even on my bucket list. I just never thought I would end up captaining the Enterprise. It’s insane when you think about it. And every single day I’m on the set — I’m not exaggerating — is both disbelief and a feeling of tremendous gratitude.”

A particularly intriguing crossover story is part of Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which will merge temporarily with “Star Trek: Lower Decks” ... an animated show. Franchise veteran Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) directed that story, which features the voices of Tawny Newsome (“Space Force”) and Jack Quaid (“The Boys”) in their “Lower Decks” parts — and challenges traditional “Star Trek” boundaries by combining live action and animation.

Still, Goldsman maintains that he and his staff “are, by nature, people who like coloring books, and we sort of like staying within the lines as much as we can. We’re ‘Star Trek’ fans, so (adhering to established) canon is almost always delightfully challenging, except when it’s really a pain in the a—. But within reason, we still try to skew as closely to it as possible.”

The adventure continues when Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” premieres on Paramount+ Thursday, June 15.

Living up to ‘Potential’: HGTV looks to the future with ‘Small Town Potential’

One of the most popular phrases heard by people of all backgrounds in their youth is how much potential they have when looking ahead to the future. As it so happens, one young couple has taken that idea and run with it, using the premise of “potential” to drive their home renovation show. Tune in for the premiere of “Small Town Potential” when it airs Wednesday, June 14, on HGTV.

Davina Thomasula, a New York state real estate agent, works side-by-side with her partner, builder Kristin Leitheuser, to spruce up some homes in the Hudson Valley area of New York. Located less than two and a half hours north of the Big Apple, Hudson Valley is filled with lush forests, sprawling farmland and a quaint, small-town feel — a far different vibe than its closest big city. And as young couples everywhere struggle to save up the money for their first home, Thomasula and Leitheuser are here to offer some advice and a helping hand.

According to HGTV, the pair “will help families who are ready to settle down in a cosy Upstate New York town find the perfect house to renovate and call home. In each episode, Davina will devise a timeless design plan complemented by the area’s natural surroundings that Kristin will bring to life with the help of her dad and building partner, Don.”

A family affair in its own right, it makes perfect sense that Thomasula and Leitheuser should want to help other families make their quiet, small-town dreams come true. Whether they are renovating a house to welcome a new addition to the family, helping an older couple downsize after becoming empty nesters, or simply helping a young couple like them to find the perfect house to make their (hopefully) forever home, no project is too big for the “Small Town Potential” team.

“The Hudson Valley is full of unique and beautiful towns nestled along the Hudson River,” Thomasula said in a promotional statement for HGTV. “So many people are moving here, because each town has a lot to offer and so much potential. I’m a real estate agent and designer who finds these upstate newcomers just the house they’re looking for.”

The eight-episode series begins with Thomasula and Leitheuser helping a fellow young couple to find their dream home in an 1800s-era farmhouse in Marlboro, N.Y. Complete with “lots of acreage for their daughter to explore,” the property, while great, needs a few upgrades before it’s move-in ready. Later in the premiere, the hosts head to Kingston, a nearby artistic community, to help an artist create a functional attic space to be used as a studio.

Doctor’s orders: Dr. Craythorne prescribes fifth season of ‘Save My Skin’

Chances are that each and every one of us has experiences an itch, a rash or a skin condition of some kind at least once in our lives, but what of the more persistent and pesky skin afflictions? From eczema to keloids and beyond, Dr. Emma Craythorne has been helping patients find relief at her dermatological practice in London, England. Now heading into its fifth season, Craythorne and her team prepare to battle a whole new selection of dangerous, ugly and uncomfortable maladies. Season 5 of “Save My Skin” premieres Wednesday, June 14, on TLC.

Ever since the series’ debut in 2019, Craythorne has been getting up close and personal with the most infectious, annoying and disfiguring skin abnormalities, and this new season is no different. While those who have seen the show will already know what to expect, TLC described the new season in such a way that may make even the most loyal “Dr. Pimple Popper” devotees tune in, stating that Craythorne continues “[u]sing cutting-edge technology and tried and tested methods of popping, slicing, and squeezing, [as] she helps people get their lives back.”

The new episodes see the dermatology team at 152 Harley St. in London facing some familiar conditions, such as allergic reactions and simple dermatitis, along with some real stumpers. More specifically, according to PremiereDate.News, “a few mystery conditions ... put Emma’s skin sleuthing skills to the test” as she tries to suss out a diagnosis and get to the root of the issue to prevent it from occurring ever again.

Craythorne’s love for her job is also always evident as she frequently takes to her social media accounts (her Instagram, @dremmacraythorne, appears to be her platform of choice) to announce new developments and share her gratitude.

“I am so grateful to the patients who were happy to share their stories,” Craythorne wrote in a promotional Instagram post for “Save My Skin.” “This not only educates the medical community on skin disease but also allows for greater discussion in general and really highlights the important link of the skin and the mind.”
