“High Sierra” (1941; Sept. 9): As an ex-convict out to pull his last job, Bogart is on the wrong side of the law in director Raoul Walsh’s tough melodrama. “The Caine Mutiny” (1954; Sept. 15): Bogart is chilling as Captain Queeg, whose questionable actions aboard his Navy vessel lead to the court martial that two of his officers (Van Johnson, Robert Francis) face. “Casablanca” (1942; Sept. 22): Well, of course. In one of the most classic of movies, cafe owner Rick (Bogart) is torn between his usual modus operandi of minding his own business and helping an ex-love and her husband (Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid).
For the many fans of Humphrey Bogart, September on Turner Classic Movies will be the stuff that dreams are made of The legendary actor is the channel’s next “Star of the Month,” with marathons of his films stretching from Thursday nights into the next day. They’re grouped by theme, starting Sept. 1 with “Bogie and Huston” and “Bogie and Bacall,” showcases for multiple attractions in which Bogart worked with director John Huston and/or wife Lauren Bacall. While he died young – at age 57, in 1957 – Bogart accomplished a lot in his career, adding several iconic roles to screen history (including the one that earned him an Oscar, the steamboat captain in the Hustonguided “The African Queen”). And on the personal front, he was part of one of Hollywood’s most legendary marriages, to his fourth spouse Bacall. Here’s a look at some highlights of TCM’s Bogart festival. “The African Queen” (1951; Thursday, Sept. 1): Bogart is ideal as the cranky boat captain, partnered with a missionary (Katharine Hepburn) on a dangerous journey. “The Maltese Falcon” (1941; Sept. 1): Bogart is private detective Sam Spade, pursuing “the stuff that dreams are made of ” – the jewel-encrusted title statue – while also probing his partner’s murder in Huston’s great adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel.

Indeed, the 27-year-old Australian has been playing the best tennis of his career of late and could challenge the favorites for the title in the tennis year’s fourth and final major, especially with three-time tourney champ Novak Djokovic sitting it out due to his vaccination status and four-time winner Rafael adal injured. He’s also made semifinals in singles at ouston, Stuttgart and Halle and won doubles titles with Thomas Kokkinakis in the Australian Open and at Atlanta. Of course, at Flushing Meadows his singles record is less impressive, having made it only as far as the third round four times. But with his power ful ser ve and his hot hand, Kyrgios might be a better bet than his No 37 ranking might indicate.

You just know Butler is going to go after the real perps, so “Angel Has Fallen” largely is an exercise in watching him escape custody, then go on the lam while evading every branch of the law Butler actually makes an appealing hero once again, but if he’s going to make a sequel, there might be better choices from among his previous films. The plot of “Angel Has Fallen” saves his alter ego from taking a desk job leading the Secret Service, since before he can give his answer about that job, the attack happens and he’s trying to get away from the very agents he would be commanding. It’s a good bet that’s not the training exercise he was looking for, nor is the accusation of Russian collusion he faces from those all too eager to pin the threat against the President on someone.

Gerard Butler has Round 3 as ‘Fallen’ Secret Ser vice agent
“Angel Has Fallen” is the kind of movie that doesn’t stir breathless anticipation, but rather, this reaction: “Fine. Why not? Nothing else is going on.” It’s surprising that “Olympus Has Fallen” has two sequels, much less one. When the original movie was released in 2013, it was in sort of a battle with “White House Down” to be that year’s best thriller about terrorists overrunning America’s top address. The reason “Olympus” worked wasn’t just Gerard Butler as a Secret Service veteran, but his teamwork with Aaron Eckhart as the president he had to protect. The 2016 follow-up “London Has Fallen” largely repeated the same plot overseas, and in 2019’s “Angel Has Fallen” –which TNT shows Monday, Aug. 29, and Tuesday, Aug. 30 – it’s the Butler character who’s the suspected terrorist. He’s alleged to have launched a drone attack on the chief executive, now played by Morgan Freeman, who’s gotten government job promotions from movie to movie in this franchise. (Well, sure. He’s Morgan Freeman. And if you dare to send drones after him, you get what you get.)
