If a new series has you thinking it’s 2000 again instead of 2021, you can be forgiven. When creator and executive producer Anthony E. Zuiker’s Las Vegas-set “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” launched 21 years ago, it quickly became a bigger hit than many anticipated ... establishing a long-running franchise that also came to encompass the spinoffs “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: NY” and “CSI: Cyber.” Now, what’s old truly is new again as CBS revisits the initial location and welcomes back some of the original cast members with the premiere of “CSI: Vegas” Wednesday, Oct. 6. and Sara Sidle. Other returnees who’ll be familiar to the “CSI” faithful include Wallace Langham as David Hodges and (in multiple episodes) Paul Guilfoyle as Jim Brass. Paula Newsome also stars as the crime lab’s current leader, and Matt Lauria, Mel Rodriguez (“The Last Man on Earth”) and Mandeep Dhillon are among additional cast newcomers. “I think that between Las Vegas, ‘Miami,’ ’New York’ and ‘Cyber,’ we did hit a sort of audience exhaustion,” Zuiker allows. “It was always in the back of our minds that this would probably come back, because ‘CSI’ was such an iconic show and it was mystery-based, it would make perfect sense at some point. I believe we made the crime genre white-hot, and it’s still pretty hot to this day, and I think the timing is interesting because the world has changed.” Indeed, then-cutting-edge forensic techniques were a big part of “CSI’s” appeal ... and they still appeal to Petersen, who’s an executive producer as well as a star of the new show, as he was the first time. “I sort of jumped at it,” he says, “because of the idea of revisiting Grissom and Sara, to see who we are now. Plus, it”s a different world than it was 20 years ago. The idea of being able to come back into the land of science, I thought, was really a great opportunity.” While allowing that “we had to diversify the cast, based on the times,” Zuiker feels “CSI: Vegas” has a strong suit in presenting principal actors from the original run again. “It wasn’t that difficult” to get them back, he maintains. “It was really just sitting down with Billy (Petersen) first at a diner in downtown Los Angeles, much like when we sat down at a cafe in 1999. I expected much more of a struggle, but I think he saw enough familiar faces who had been around from Day One to say ‘Yes.’ ”

Stafford eyes a Super Bowl title in Los Angeles Matthew Stafford has played a lot of games and set a lot of records for the Detroit Lions. And after 12 seasons of mostly losing football in the Motor City, the 33-year-old quarterback wants what every NFL player wants: a Super Bowl ring. This past offseason, he requested and got a trade, to the Los Angeles Rams for two future first round picks, a third round pick in the most recent draft and quarterback Jared Goff. It was a steep price to pay for the Rams, who took a first round exit in the 2020 Divisional playoff, but it might also be the final piece of what could be a championship team. The Rams and their fans certainly got a taste of that in their Week 1 game against the Chicago Bears, when Stafford completed 20 of 26 passes for 321 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-14 victory over his former NFC North rivals. The uber-efficient performance also drew raves from teammates and head coach Sean McVay, who commented afterward, “You’re not limited in anything you can do in the pass game.” Stafford brings an impressive resume to L.A., holding Lions all-time records for passing yards (45,109), touchdowns (282), completions (3,898) and wins (74). Given the talent that now surrounds him, Stafford and the Rams hope his move west will bring more milestones to what may be a Hall of Fame career. Stafford and the Rams can be seen in action Thursday, Oct. 7, when they pay a visit to the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks in a prime-time game airing on Fox. FULL NAME: John Matthew Stafford

No matter how far science-fiction movies have come in the past 55 years, there’s never been another quite like “Fantastic Voyage.” Offered by Turner Classic Movies to start a tribute to director Richard Fleischer on Saturday, Oct. 9, the 1966 fantasy takes a miniaturized submarine crew on a trip through a defecting scientist’s (Jean Del Val) body to repair a critical injury from within. Bear in mind that this was made before the era of commonly used computer-generated special effects, so what the film achieves with its visuals – which earned two Oscars – is that much more amazing. The story starts on a very realistic note as the scientist in question is delivered, supposedly safely, to his destination by an intelligence agent played by Stephen Boyd. Soon afterward, though, he’s the target of an attack committed by automobile ...and it’s determined that the only way to repair the damage to his brain is to deploy a team to enter his body, injected via a hypodermic needle, and stage the needed procedure. That would seem impossible, if not for a top-secret process that can shrink anything – or anyone – down to the size of a microbe. The Boyd character is enlisted to go along on the sub to provide security for a surgeon and his assistant (Arthur Kennedy, Raquel Welch), a “Fantastic rather tightly wound medical Voyage“ consultant (Donald Pleasence) and the vessel’s driver (William Redfield). And they have only an hour to get in, accomplish their mission and get out before they start growing back to normal size.
