Herring Festival set for next weekend

JAMESVILLE - The banks of the Roanoke River in Jamesville will be over owing with locals and visitors alike beginning on Friday March 31 as the NC Herring Festival 2023 kicks off.

Beginning as a street festival in celebration of the annual Herring spawning run up the Roanoke over 70 years ago, the celebration has grown into a yearly destination attraction.

This year’s event is being held on Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1. The streets will be closed at noon as vendors will be setting up.

At 5 p.m. welcoming ceremonies will begin on the Main Stage.

The Cooper Greer Band takes the stage at 6 p.m. and will play until 10 p.m. including intermission and announcements. There may be dancing in the streets.

An added event to this year’s festival is the First Annual Miss Herring Festival Pageant. The event is being held at the Jamesville Elementary School on Friday, March 31.

Doors open at 6 p.m. the pageant begins at 6:30 p.m.

The winners will be announced on the Main Stage Friday evening. Pageant participants may also take part in the Pageant Float in Saturday’s Parade.

On Friday evening rides will open at 5 p.m. and ride wristbands will be available for Friday night only.

The parade line-up begins at 9 a.m. at the Jamesville Elementary School. The parade begins at 10 a.m. At 10:45 a.m. the welcoming ceremonies begin along with the National Anthem.

The Car,Truck and Motorcycle Show registration begins at 8 a.m. with the award presentation at 1:30 p.m.

There will be food vendors and games throughout the day. Organizers expect 40 plus vendors for the event Herrings are available during the festival at the River’s Edge Restaurant and the Hood

Temple Church, located at 2082 Main Street.

The Patriot Band takes the stage at 11 a.m. followed by Gene Galligan at 12:45 p.m. Curtis Hyler and Jubilation will perform from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Dry Creek Band will end the afternoon, taking the stage at 4:30 p.m. and performing for an hour.

The R.T. Johnson Band will wrap up the music for the festival, taking the stage at 6 p.m. and playing until 9:30 p.m. when the reworks will begin and take over where the drums leave off.

Music groups that will perform on Saturday are K-OS, Seeds of Change, Just In Time, Nancy Joyner and Early Station, Martin County Ramblers and Sarah Hardison Harris.

The final music group, Mikele Buck Band, will take the stage at 5 p.m. with the Saturday night street dance and the day will close with fireworks once it gets dark.
