Greetings,

Ihave,onceagain,thehonorandprivilegeofcontinuingtoserveasPresidentofourAPLDCA Chapter.Weaccomplishedmanygreatthingslastyearwiththehelpofourincredibleandhighly dedicatedgroupofvolunteersthroughoutthestate.Iwanttothankallthosecolleaguesfortheir relentlessdedicationandwork.Iamverygratefultobeapartofthisorganizationandtocollaborate withourcolleaguesinsuchaway,supportingandpromotingthepracticeofexcellencein landscapedesign.Therefore,Iencourageyouonceagaintocontinuetomakethemostofyour membershipbystayingconnectedandengagedwhereverandwheneveryoucan,thatbeing throughparticipationineventsorvolunteeringatDistrictorChapterlevels.

ThetopicofthisNewsletteristhefirstoffouronourelementalseries:Earth,whichmakesitquite diverseandexciting. WhatcomestomindwhenthinkingaboutEarthinourlandscapes? Myfirst thoughtsareabouthowweshapeitinourdesignsandwhattheEarthaddstotheexperienceofa garden.Wecanthinkofhowweworkwithslopesorbuildingmoundstobreakthemonotonyofa flatlandscape,catch,contain,infiltrate,filterwater,andcreatehabitatsforourselvesandwildlifeof allsorts.IpictureEarthasincludingstone,whichisthemostvisibleaspectofearth.

Ifweconsiderstoneaspartoftheearth,wecanconsideritagroundingelement.Onethathelps usdefineaspace,becomeafocalpoint,becomeamythologicalsymbolofstrength,orthe permanent,thatwhichdefiesthepassageoftime.Anotheraspectthatcomestomindis life-giving, whichisparticularlyvaluabletome,fortheearth,startingfromthesoilup,isthemotherofall things.Withtheproperdesign,implementation,andmanagementoftheearth,oursoils,the ecosystemswithin,andthosetheybreedlifeintowouldbepossible.

Inthefallof2022,TheAPLDCAChapterBoardMemberswantedtodosomethingspecialforour firstface-to-facemeetingintwoandahalfyears,withboardmemberscomingfromallfourdistricts inCaliforniatoBurbank.Aspartofthat,wearrangedaprivate,guidedtourofTheGottliebNative GardeninBeverlyHillsonOctober23.WeinvitedourGreaterLosAngelesandSanDiegodistrict memberstojoinusforthetour.Theexperienceallowedustogatherandwalkaboutinagarden withanincredibleconcept.Onethatgenuinelypromotespracticesthatpreserve,nourish,and encouragethesystemsin nature thatmakethisEarthawonderfulplacetolivein.

ItwasgreattoseeallthefantasticworkthatSusanGottliebandherteamofexperts,Emerson Funes,maintenance,andScottLogan,naturalist,aredoingtocreate,promoteandsustainnative habitatsinanurbanenvironment.Ienjoyedhearingthemtalkaboutthegardenconcept,thenative plantstheyhavebeenusing,howtheyaremanaged,andhowthegardenhasbecomeahabitat forsomuchwildlife.ItwasterrifictohearScott'sstudies,astheyshowhowmuchofadifferencea nativelandscapemakesintheenvironment.Hisbook, GottliebNativeGarden,anintimatewildlife journey,"depictsallthatbeautifully.Thebookisworthitjustforthephotographyitself.Icanspeak forthewholeAssociationbysayingthattheirapproachtolandscapingisverymuchinlinewithwhat weadvocateforinourpractices.

Awayoflandscapingthatisinharmonywiththesurroundingnature,notatwarwithit.Alandscape thatnourisheswildlifeandthusshowcasesthebeautyofnatureanditsprocesses. Ialsonotedthat eventhoughman'spresenceinthelandscapeisevident,itisnotinvasiveordestructive.

Onthecontrary,itisanexcellentexampleofhowhumanbeingscanbestewardsoftheland/earthand createanadequatehabitatformaninharmonywithnature.Thisisamuchbetterapproachtolandscaping, notonlyduringourtimesbutalways.

Itwasalsowonderfultomeetnewandoldfriends,experiencethiswonderfulgarden,network,andimprove eachotherandusprofessionally.SusanGottliebgenerouslygiftedeachattendeewithacopyofherbook, "TheGottliebNativeGarden,"whichcaughteveryonebysurprise.Everyonewasveryappreciativeofher fordoingthat.IhopeyouenjoythepicturesasmuchasIdidtakingthem.Itwassomuchfuntoseeallof uslearningtogetherandbuildingagoodearth.

PleasefindthisissueasinspiringandpracticalasIhave.Wishingyouaprosperousyearfullofnourishing anddiverseexperiencesandopportunitiesinyourpractice.

Flamesdance,facesglow,conversationflows warmly…orperhapsthisisafireforone…aretreat tothink,readabook,decompress.Firefeaturesin thegardendrawpeopleoutsideandintoaprimalexperienceofnature,ourorigins,andourmemory.Manyfactors shouldbeconsideredwhenincludingafireelementina gardendesign.

THEOPTIONS:PITVSPLACE:Theappealofa fireplaceisundeniable.Thesolidstructureofafireplace becomesafocalelementevenwithoutalitfire. Decorativehardscapeoptionslikestone,tile,orbrickcan addsomuchtotheoverallgardenfeel.Fireplacescan createanelegant,upscalefeel.However,theaccessfor gueststoexperiencetheflamesupcloseislimited comparedtoafirepit.Afirepitallowsacirculargathering offriendsandfamilywhocanallfeelthewarmthofthe fire.Thefirepitcreatesamoresociallyengaging experiencewithguestsgazingacrossthefire.

SCALE:Howdoestheclientenvisionusingthefirefea-

ture?Morningsovercoffee?Smoreswithkids?Elegant aperitifsforagroup?Aromanticrendezvousfortwo? Theseanswerswillimpactthetypeandstyleoffeatureyou designandhowmuchseatingandpatiospacetoinclude. FUEL.Theoptionshereareoftendedicatedtocost, clientwishes,safety,andgovernmentregulations.NATURALGASfeaturesguaranteetheeasiest,mostreliable, andbiggestflames.Ifyouchosenaturalgas,selecta burnerthatprovides80,000to120,000BTUifyouwanta bighotflameforagroup.Smallerburnersinthe60,00080,000BTUrangearefineforamoreintimateexperience oriftheheatisnotamainconsideration.

Theneedtoinstallagaslineforthistypeoffeatureadds cost,requiresapermit,andmeansthisfirefeatureisnot movingaroundthegarden.Naturalgasfeaturesmaybe restrictedinthefutureduetoenvironmentalconcernsregardingemissions.PROPANEtanksarealsoanoption, buttheneedtohidethetankcreatesdesignlimitations. Noneedforgaslinesprovidesinitialcostsavings, andwoodfirepitscanbemovedthroughthegarden.Firesafetymustbeconsidered,andflying sparksmaybetooriskyinmanysettings.“Smokeless” firepitsofferedbySoloStoveandothercompaniesmay provideawelcomeoption.Ihaveyettotryone,butIam hiscanbeaviablesolution.

BIOFUELfeaturesbyEcosmartFireandother companiesofferaviablesolutiontomanyofthe challengeswoodandnaturalgasfeaturescreate.These featuresburnenvironmentallyfriendlyethanolanddonot needagaslineinstalled.Theycanberelocated throughoutthegarden.Theheatoutputmaxesoutat 20,000BTU,buttheflameprovidesplentyofatmosphere formoreintimategatherings.Thefuellastsabout10 hoursperfill-upandispurchasedingallonjugs.

What’snext?TheAdvocacyCommitteeandChapterare discussingwaystocontinuethemomentumofthe Symposium,includingfosteringrelationshipswith agencies,organizations,non-profitorganizations,and others,aswellasbeingatthediscussiontable,soto speak,andraisingawarenessrelativetolegislationand regulations.

Wow!Whatayear.Prioritiessetfor2022bythe AdvocacyCommitteeanditsworkgroupscametoan amazingculminationinthefall.Herearesomeofthe highlightsandfeaturedarticlesintheAdvocacyCorner:

SlowtheBurnSymposium–creatingbeautiful,native landscapesinthefaceofwaterscarcityandfire.The ever-presentthreatofwildfiresinCaliforniaandother stateshasdramaticallyescalatedthedemandfor ecology-basedlandscapesthataddressissuesof biodiversitycollapse,waterscarcity,andwildfirethreat.

TheCaliforniaChapterandAdvocacyCommitteeknew weneededtoeducateourselvesandourmembersand acttoday!

JodieCook,ofJodieCookLandscapeDesignandoneof theSymposium’sspeakersandAdvocacyCommittee’s organizers,statedtheissuesowellduringthe introduction,“Asdesignersandpeopleworkingwith landscapes,it’sessentialthatweconsiderthe ecosystemswithinwhichweexistanduponwhichwe depend…Itisimperativethatweadaptourhomes, communities,andthewildlandstheyborderforresilience andregenerationofnaturalsystems.”

HealthyPots,HealthyPlanetInitiative: ATerrificWaytoUseYourTalents

AnAdvocacyCommitteeWorkgroup

Withfoundationalbuildingblocksinplace,andacoreteamof long-timeAPLDmembers,thecomingmonthspromisetobea keytimetomakethemostofyourexperienceandcontactsby givingsometimetowardsagoalweallembracethatofreducingtheuse ofplasticsinthehorticulturalindustry.BybuildingavastCoalitionof individuals,tradeassociations,non-profits,retailandwholesale nurseries,andgrowers,wewanttoencouragemanufacturerstoproduce moresustainablealternativestohorticulturalplasticpots.

Overthespanof21months,theprogramhasadvancedfrom announcingitsformationtoestablishingapresenceontheweband acquiringthesignaturesofover500supporters.Wehavebegunforming allianceswithkeyorganizationsintheGreenIndustryandaregettingour messageoutviaonlinepublications,speakingengagements,webinars, andAPLDevents.VariousAPLDmembershavecontributedtheirtime andtalentstotheinitiativethusfar.LedbyToniBaileyfromDC-MD-VA, keysupporthascomefromLoriCoxandKarenHuntoftheCAAdvocacy CommitteeWorkgroup;CathyWaldhauser(theVirtualChapter);Marie Chieppo(theNortheastRegionalChapter);andnineAPLDmembers assistingasAmbassadorsfortheprogram.

TheCAChapterhasprovidedtremendoussupporttotheInitiative.We producedasuperbvideothatwaslinkedtoanemailcallingonall ChaptermemberstojointheHealthyPots,HealthyPlanetCoalition.The basicscriptandformatwillbesharedwithotherAPLDChaptersasa messagingtool.TheCAAPLDCommunicationsstaffhavebeen invaluableinmessagingthroughout.Despitehavingnobudgetforallof 2022,everythinghasbeenachievedthroughvolunteerwork,APLD Communications,andagenerousdonationof$500fromtheCAChapter.

TheImportanceofPreparingforMore ExtremeWeather ArticlebyNancyWallace

Overthepastdecade,Californiahasexperiencedmoreextremeweather,includingwetter wintersanddriersummers.Inordertoprepareforthisyear-round,ithelpsifthehardscape materialsusedforlandscapingreflectthisvolatility.Adefensiblespaceisimportanttocreate betweenyourhomeandtheplants,trees,andotheritemsonyourpropertyforfiresafety,allwhile alsokeepinginmindreturningwatertothewatertablebelow.

Oneuniquehardscapematerial,permeablepaverscanprovidedualbenefitsbyprovidingafire bufferandasustainableurbandrainagesystem.Thesepaversalsohelpreducetheamountof pollutantsthatcanfindtheirwaybackintothewatersystem.

TheFarmer'sAlmanacrecommendscreatingspacebetweenplants andyourhouseusingnonflammablematerialssuchasgravel,rock, flagstone,orconcretedecking.Thisway,ifasparkfallsinthisarea, thereisnothingtoburn.Note:Mostnaturalstonecanwithstandhigh heatbutisnotfire-resistant.

WhenIwasapproachedacoupleofyearsagotoparticipateintheAPLDmentorshipprogramasamentor,I immediatelyknewwhatIwantedtodoasmycontribution.IhavebeenaVectorworksuserforaboutsevenyears andhaveattendedlocalusergroupmeetingsforthatduration.Thegroupisafunone,andtheleaderis fabulous,butasyoucanimagine,sinceIliveinStudioCity,mostoftheattendeesareinvariousareasofthe entertainmentbusiness–lighting,setdesign,production,andmore.Ialwayswishedthattherewasagroup dedicatedtoLandmark.

Sincebythistime,COVIDhadstruckandwewereallmeetingonline,IapproachedthefolksatVectorworks aboutstartingagroup.Ittookmorethanayeartogetofftheground,butwefinallyhadourfirstmeetinginJune of2022.Iamthegroupleader,andwehavearotatingrosterofguestinstructors.Mygoalistohaveamonthly meeting,butsometimesweskipamonth.MeetingsaregenerallyonaTuesday,butthatisnotahard-fastrule, andthetimesvaryasinstructorsliveindifferenttimezonesofthecountry.Meetingdatesandtimesareposted ontheVectorworkscalendar,whichcanbefoundbyclicking here

Themeetingsarerecorded,andIsendouttherecordingstoeveryoneonmylist,whethertheyattendedornot.
