Preserving the Harvest*

Saturday, October 8 at 10:30 a.m. Eola Road Branch – Large Meeting Room and Virtual via Zoom Join gardening educator Mark Lyons for a session on preserving your garden harvest through the winter and maybe even beyond! This presentation will cover canning, freezing, dehydrating, and winter storage techniques.

Wednesday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. Eola Road Branch – Large Meeting Room Children & teens can celebrate Diwali by sharing their dance skills at our first-ever, dance talent show! All skill levels are welcome, and each participant will receive a 5 minute time slot. Walk-in audience members are welcome. Grades K–12.

Incredible Bats and Other Misunderstood Animals

Thursday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. Santori Library- 125/126 In this family program, we will dispel common myths about bats. We will have live fruit bats, snakes, tarantulas and rats at this presentation. Ticketed program. Tickets can be picked up 30 minutes before the program at the Children's Desk.

Rangoli Competition*

Saturday, October 22 at 10 a.m. Santori Library- Atrium Draw rangoli or any pattern of your choice and decorate it with provided materials such as colored powders, colored rice, a variety of beans, and more. All ages are welcome. Participants may bring additional materials as desired.

Saturday, October 8 from 2 - 3 p.m. West Branch- Meeting Room Join us for fun and prizes while we play Lotería. Lotería is a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of numbers.

Young Authors Short Story Contest

Tuesday, November 1 - Wednesday, November 30 All Locations Aspiring young writers are invited to submit short stories to be judged by a panel of APLD's children's librarians for creativity, style, and voice. Entries may be submitted any day in November. Judging will be broken into two age groups: Grades 3-5 & Grades 6-8. Winners will have their stories published on the APLD website.

Skype a Scientist: Dinosaur Edition!*

Wednesday, November 9 at 6 p.m. Eola Road Branch – Large Meeting Room & via Zoom Join us for an all-ages virtual presentation and Q&A with Dr. Ian N. Cost to learn all about dinosaurs! Participate in-person at Eola Road Branch or via Zoom.

Family Dinner Book Club

Sunday, November 13 at 3 p.m. Santori Library- Hurrell Storytime Room Gather with your children to share a snack, a book, and an activity all centered around a common theme. This month's theme is 'giving'! We will be reading “Saturday at the Food Pantry” by Diane O’Neil. We encourage families to bring non-perishable foods to donate to the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry.

We Dig Dinosaurs!

Saturday, November 19 at 1 p.m. AND 2:30 p.m. Santori Library- 125/126 What are the biggest? smartest? weirdest? coolest? dinosaurs ever??? Join us for an exciting presentation and dino-riffic activities including a fossil dig, dino-bowling, bone craft, and more. Ages 7-12 with families. Ticketed program. Haunted House Escape Room*

Fridays, October 7 - 28 at 3:30 p.m. or 4:15 p.m. Santori Library – Room 222 The time for scares and haunts is here! Can you and your friends escape the haunted room that our Teen Advisory Board helped design?! No prior escape room experience is necessary. Grades 6-12.

APLD Plays Twitch – We're Playing: Phasmophobia

Monday, October 17 at 6 p.m. Virtual via Twitch Tune in and watch us play video games on our Twitch channel! Phasmophobia is an online, cooperative, psychological, horror game for 4 players. This game is not currently rated. Due to potentially frightening images and situations, it is recommended for ages 16+. Our Twitch stream will be live at https://www.twitch.tv/apldplays.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

FAFSA Workshop

Tuesday, October 25 at 6 p.m. Eola Road Branch – Large Meeting Room Tuesday, November 15 at 6 p.m. Santori Library – Room 224 This workshop will help parents and students fill out the FAFSA for college financial aid with the help of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). Laptops will be provided, and ISAC reps will assist and answer questions. Participants should have access to information regarding their income and asset information in order to complete the FAFSA.

How to Create a Successful Business Plan*

Tuesday, October 18 at 6 p.m. Santori Library – Rooms 125/126 Want to start a business? You need to create a business plan! In this workshop, Harriet Parker, Manager of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee, will explain how to develop a realistic plan to help you launch and run your business successfully.

Naturalization 101: Becoming a U.S. Citizen*

Thursday, October 20 at 6 p.m. Virtual via Zoom A representative from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will conduct a virtual informative session on the naturalization process, eligibility requirements, and the Englishlanguage and civics examinations. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions during the Q & A session. The presentation will be conducted in English, and Spanish translation will be available.
