Madeira is a garden / There isn’t another like it in the world. The illustrious fadista (fado singer) Amália Rodrigues used to sing it, using verses of the famous Bailinho da Madeira (Madeira’s traditional folklore). Madeira Island has long been known as a “Garden”, such is the variety of plants, flowering or not, that grow in its fertile soil. One trait of Madeira Island’s gardens is that there are plants in blossom all year round: orchids, birds of paradise, anthuriums, rhododendrons, arboreal and shrubby flora, magnolias and a never-ending harmony of colours and scents, mostly exotic. You’ll often also find massarocos (echium candicans), buttercups (ranunculus), geraniums from Madeira, estreleiras (argyranthemum pinnatifidum) and endemic species, both from the Macaronesian region and exclusive from the archipelago. With a subtropical climate, the island allows guests to enjoy well-preserved parks and gardens, where you can witness a wide and luxurious collection of plants from all over the world – which, for the last 200 years, have delighted remarkable travellers who come over for health reasons, in business or leisure trips. In the XVIII and XIX centuries, there was a considerably large foreign community, particularly the British, who actually settled in Madeira Island mostly attracted to the thriving trade of Vinho Madeira (Madeira Wine). They acquired large estates known as “Quintas” (Farms), mainly comprised of a manor house and extensive landscaped gardens full of glamour and romanticism, in a combination of influences and floristic experiments, among which the Victorian gardens stood out, but not exclusively. Many are the gardens that carry traces of stories from other times in history and emphasise the importance of Madeira in the introduction of plants from tropical countries with the aim of carrying out their acclimatisation and further planting in botanical gardens across Europe. awaken the most curious eyes; and the flood of fragrances that flowers exude will help to retain all this experience in your memory, travel back in time and immerse yourself in the wide and filled-withexpertise world of botany. In the year 1999, Funchal won the “Tourism in a Flowery Portugal” contest. This award allowed Madeira to represent Portugal in the “European Flowery Cities and Villages – 2000” contest. The quality standard of the farms, parks and gardens in the municipality of Funchal was internationally recognized with the “European Gold Medal – 2000” award, a prestigious accolade that has not been granted to any another Portuguese city.

Built in 1966, Parque de Santa Catarina (Santa Catarina Park) is a familiar and romantic public leisure space. Located on the cosy crossing between Avenida do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro, in the city of Funchal, this park stretches for about 36.000 m2, of the bar under the trees while reading a book, listen to the birds and observe the species that dwell in the lagoon, have fun and let the kids play in the playground, go for a walk through cobblestone paths amid flower beds and trees from other parts of the world, come with romance in mind or the energy to work out. But there are more landmarks: ancient monuments representing the machines that were used to crush grapes and asphalt roads; the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator and Christopher Columbus; Capela de Santa Catarina (Chapel of Saint Catherine), the first religious temple with decorative elements in Manueline architectural style, built in Madeira Island in 1425; and a privileged view to the cruise ships that, throughout the year, make a mandatory pit stop in the port of Funchal.
