On Carnival Tuesday it is possible to watch a satirical parade based on cultural heritage, in a depiction of what was originally carried out along Rua da Carreira, in a spontaneous way, in the first half of the 20th century, and whose creativity has no limits and ranges from social and political satire, to traditional frameworks, as well as simple disguises. To the rhythm of two philharmonic bands, the Slapstick Parade promises to pass on the atmosphere of revelry and fun to the public, with the Funchal Municipal Band opening the parade and the Funchal District Band Funchal in the centre.
Participation is open to everyone, nationals and foreigners, and can be done so individually or in groups within the different categories of the four classesAdults, Children, Best “Trapalhão”, King “Trapalhão” and Transvestite. Compadres Festival Santana City
This traditional festivity forms part of the transition rituals from winter to spring and the regeneration of the local community. This initiative takes place in a clear antagonism between local male and female residents, evident in the making of the satirical male and female puppets. The purpose of the event is to judge the “compadre” and the “comadre”, during which social criticism is made of the events and actions of individuals and institutions in the community during the year. In the end, both the “compadre” and the “comadre” are burned as punishment. In this way, the community regenerates itself and eases social tensions, preparing it for a new cycle which begins in Spring.
Theme Parties
Nightlife spots also organize various themed party nights in the days before Carnival, such as “Hippy Night” and “Transvestite Night”, inviting partygoers to have fun while disguised with a mask alluding to the theme.
