Ryde Connector A Community Newsletter from Victor Dominello MP
June 2022
Marsden High School
Reimagined bigger and better! I am extremely pleased that our school community are now fully integrated into their new, state of the art high school and primary school. Parents, teachers and students alike are now enjoying these amazing facilities and I would like to commend those involved with the construction of the schools on their determination and resilience to complete the buildings in the time they did. Story continues inside 3
Unfold to see our latest 100 achievements in Ryde!
All the way back in 2018 when the relocation of Marsden High School was first announced, who would have known everything this project and our community had in store?
Marsden High School
Reimagined bigger and better! ... Continued from cover
Our wonderful community in Ryde has been growing steadily with young families who can now know that their children will be able to attend this new fantastic facility. A facility that has students being able to excel in the future in mind. The student population is expected to increase by more than 25 per cent over the next decade, so parents can rest assured that Ryde is ready for this surge. This new facility will cater for up to 1,000 primary students and 1,500 secondary students. The co-location on the TAFE NSW Meadowbank site offers students the incredible advantage of easing their shift through multiple stages of their education and allowing for partnerships between both schools to develop.
“
Having the primary and secondary school at the same location provides many advantages for students, particularly their transition into high school. This partnership will allow for a seamless transition in an often exciting and unfamiliar time. The advantage of being able to have a close relationship with the TAFE NSW due to location is that they will be able to develop an educational partnership, and with 468,000 enrolments to TAFE NSW in 2020 and expected to increase, that is an extremely desirable and necessary relationship for the students to have. The benefit of having these modern facilities is that they have been built with the future in mind, including increasing growth in student numbers and a school that will help them to develop for our

ever changing technology-centric world. The old high school and primary school did not allow for these changes in the future as they were near reaching capacity and the ageing conditions of the buildings made upgrades difficult. With the site now completed and in full operation the local community has just received a huge upgrade with this state-of-the-art education facility that will cater to our increasing population of young families in Ryde.
West Ryde
Commuter Carpark We worked hard and our community petitioned for better parking in West Ryde. This hard work has now paid off with Transport for NSW delivering an additional 101 convenient commuter car spaces at West Ryde Station. The West Ryde commuter car park is beautifully landscaped and considers commuter safety by including ample lighting and accessible pathways. It allows easy access to public transport at key interchanges, as well as reduced congestion on the roads of Ryde. I am pleased to announce that the introduction of this new carpark has secured commuters a car space for their nine-to-five lives, and through the introduction of a new trial, now serves as a facilitator of the Ryde night-time and weekend economy for local businesses. We have been successful in addressing non commuter costing issues through the carpark’s 6-month ‘park free’ trial at certain times, which commenced on 14 April 2022, and has shown great community engagement since, with the carpark reaching capacity each day. After community consultation, we have instigated free parking all day on weekends, and between 5pm and midnight on weekdays until 14 October 2022. The newly-introduced 6-month
Being a short 5 minute walk from West Ryde Train Station, this commuter carpark has proved to be more convenient than ever. Additionally, I’m excited to present the new carpark as environmentally friendly. Single-use paper parking cards are not distributed and instead, users conveniently enter and exit the carpark using their accepted Opal Card. The carpark has reliable infrastructure from Transport Park&Ride, such as Opal operated boom gates, to present real-time parking availability which allows you to see how many vacant car spaces there are at any given time to help plan your trips. The lighting, wayfinding signage, new rail corridor fencing and footpaths provides optimum safety to users, ensuring secure and adjacent access to public transport. With four accessible parking spaces and 12 bicycle parking hoops, this carpark accommodates everyone who wishes to use it.
The newly-introduced 6-month trial allows for free parking all day on weekends, and between 5pm and midnight on weekdays.

trial allows for free parking all day on weekends, and between 5pm and midnight on weekdays. Through extensive community consultation, feedback from the community was taken on-board and working solutions have been provided. The 6-month trial will run until 14 October 2022.
This carpark is a great addition to West Ryde and has made catching public transport easier and more convenient. I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops in the future.

My role as Minister It has been a busy start to the year with many exciting projects underway in my portfolio.
The role is similar to my previous portfolio, with a strong emphasis on digital transformation. The following is a snapshot of different projects that I’m passionate about, which make life easier for families and deliver a boost to household budgets.
Access cost of living support I know it’s incredibly hard for so many families and households across the community right now, due to cost of living pressures. The NSW Government has more than 70 savings available to help household budgets. Whether you’re a family, retiree, or young professional, there’s something for everyone. Examples include Active Kids vouchers, Creative Kids vouchers, Seniors Card and National Parks Concession Pass. Residents are encouraged to visit the Service NSW website and check what savings they may be eligible for. You can also book an appointment with a Savings Specialist at the Ryde Service NSW Centre, who will not only identify savings, but also help you claim them.
Across NSW, the average saving per appointment is $770.
Take the hassle out of parking with Park’nPay
Find the cheapest petrol in real-time using the FuelCheck App
Back in February, Park’nPay went live in Macquarie Park. The free app allows motorists in Macquarie Park to pay for parking or top up existing parking online using their smart phone.
Drivers have experienced record high petrol prices and pain at the pump due to a range of international factors. Fortunately in NSW, drivers can download the free FuelCheck app, which has real-time information on petrol prices across every service station in the State. About two million drivers have downloaded this game-changing app, allowing them to find the cheapest petrol in the palm of their hand.
The app makes life easier for motorists and saves them time. Gone are the days of having to search around for loose change for a parking meter or leaving a meeting to top up your balance. It helps motorists avoid parking fines by sending a notification when their meter is about to expire or their parking restrictions are about to change. It also keeps track of a motorist’s parking history and is completely ticketless.
Using the app regularly could save you up to $500 a year.
This is a big win for Macquarie Park and reaffirms its reputation as an economic, education and innovation powerhouse.
Do yourself a favour – download the app now and reap the rewards.
The technology is also now available in Lane Cove National Park.
“
This is a big win for Macquarie Park and reaffirms its reputation as an economic, education and innovation powerhouse.

I was honoured to be appointed Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government in December 2021, following the appointment of Dominic Perrottet as Premier.
Police and Community Youth Club
Multisports Facility in West Ryde We have been working hard and I’m excited to share with you some news that will benefit both Ryde and our sporting community. We have been working hard and I’m excited to share with you some news that will benefit both Ryde and our sporting community. Our very own multi-sports facility at the site of the previous Marsden High School. Approval has been given to demolish previous buildings and the construction contract has been awarded with work to start very soon.
L–R: Superintendent Peter Glynn, Ryde Local Area Command; The Hon. Victor Dominello MP, Member for Ryde; Karen Waud, President, Eastwood Ryde Netball Association; Dominic Teakle, CEO Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW; and Jordan Lane, Mayor, Ryde City Council Mayor.
The project proposes to deliver a new sports centre that will feature four multi-purpose courts and a gymnasium, 32 outdoor netball courts, a kiosk, public amenities, on-site car parking
and landscaping and I know that Eastwood Ryde Netball Association and the many netball players are looking forward to playing at this new site.
I am delighted to be able to share that the operator contract has been awarded to Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC). The new multi-sports facility will be shared with the local community as part of a new joint-use agreement between PCYC and NSW Department of Education. It is wonderful to see this collaboration produce a state-of-the-art sporting facility. PCYC will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility and the land where it is located.

The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools... continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
I share the community’s excitement and anticipation as this project begins to take shape. The future is bright and I look forward to seeing locals and our sporting champions enjoying this new state-ofthe-art facility in our own back yard.
These are important milestones for the project as they allow for real progress. Site establishment is starting now and the demolition will begin soon which makes way for the construction of a sports facility that the whole community will be able to access. The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years,

John Alexander OAM “I have a lifelong devotion to public service” is the quote that embodies the life and service of John Alexander OAM, who has been serving the nation since the 1960s in careers that have found him continually putting Australia first. John’s career began as one of Australia’s most prominent tennis players. Not only did he win over 30 titles, including his incredible victory at the 1977 Davis Cup where he won the decisive singles match at White City, Paddington; he also captained the Federation Cup team in 2005. I remember the 1977 Davis Cup match because Australia played Italy. I was only about 10 years old and was in the lounge room with my dad watching. Obviously it was a great outcome, even if Italy came second.
After an illustrious career in the sport he loves, John continued to put Australia first when he became the member for Bennelong in 2010. John and I have worked closely together since his election in 2010 and I am continually impressed by his dedication and drive to ensure the greatest outcomes for his community. Since being elected, John has been the chair of eight different committees, including the inquiry into options for financing faster rail, for which John has passionately advocated for many years. In the local community John has never shied away from a battle, working tirelessly in order to get the best outcomes for his constituents. He has made a huge impact in every area of the community, starting with the Bennelong Table Tennis Tournament, which afforded every school in the local area an opportunity to compete against each other. John also provided each school with tables and relevant equipment to ensure that students and teachers could continue to enjoy the sport outside of tournaments. John was crucial in the Stronger Communities Program, which allowed local groups to invest in the broader community. The program facilitated the creation of several community gardens that are now enjoyed and utilised by the entire electorate; and it provided IT equipment for the Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club, ensuring no members of the community were ever
left disconnected. Even at the beginning, John was there when I asked for assistance when we fought to save the Tennis World site and stop overdevelopment in the community. John has always fought for the community. He continued to put in the work for Bennelong by creating Bennelong Village Businesses, which was designed to reinvigorate community shopping villages and ensure the continuation of small businesses throughout the electorate. Bennelong Village Businesses culminated in a promotional campaign that allowed opportunities for small businesses and provided reassurances of John’s personal support. This initiative was instrumental in assisting small businesses to bounce back from the global financial crisis and, more recently, following COVID‑19. In 2000 John was instrumental in creating the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre for the Sydney Olympics. The centre continues to provide services for over 1 million people annually. This initiative was spearheaded while John was the managing director of Next Generation Clubs Australia, where his passion for fitness and sport and his drive for public service was discernible. On a personal level, I have the utmost respect for John and admire his dedication and passion for the community that we both love so much.
I was one of the first people to work with him during his 2010 campaign, and our relationship has only grown over the past 11 years as we have stood side by side, serving our community. Through our support and collaboration, John and I have always strived to do what is best for our community, and I am eternally grateful for our friendship and his leadership over the years. Thankfully, it is a friendship that will continue well beyond politics. I wish John every success and happiness in the chapters that follow, post-politics. I thank him from the bottom of my heart for serving Bennelong and Ryde and for all that he has done to help me on my political journey. I will genuinely miss him as my Federal MP, but I will not miss him as a friend because that will continue.
