Ryde Connector A Community Newsletter from Victor Dominello MP
Welcome to 2019 and my first Connector for the New Year! The start of the year is always a good moment to reflect on the past and to focus on our future. Together, we have done so much. We have fought and will continue to fight against over-development, such as the 63 storey towers, and preserve important spaces such as TG Milner Fields. Importantly, because the NSW Government has no debt and we are in surplus, we can build seven, yes, SEVEN new schools which will ensure that we continue to
January 2019
provide our children with the best education. We can build the Meadowbank Education Precinct, which will include a nation leading TAFE. We can also build a state level indoor netball/sports facility, two synthetic hockey fields as we also need and deserve first class sporting facilities. We can provide a North West Metro and fast ferries so that you can get where you need to go faster and on time. I am energised about what else we can accomplish, together.
Another busy year
Representing Ryde “It is an absolute blessing representing a community that my family has called home for over 85 years. I am very much invigorated and enthusiastic for our year ahead and very excited about our future. Victor Dominello MP

It has been my pleasure to represent Constituents from Ryde on a variety of issues and concerns to Government Ministers. The issues raised ranged from assistance with personal requirements through to concerns on Government Policy. Representations are raised after personal meetings, phone conversations, emails and letters. Correspondence is prepared regarding the issue/s and forwarded to the Minister for review and response. The information on this page provides you with an insight into the number and variety of representations to Ministers and Council made on behalf of Ryde Constituents.

Education Powerhouse Meadowbank Education Precinct
New Kent Road Public School
The NSW Government’s 2018/19 Budget includes $6 billion over four years to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools. A further $160 million has also been invested as part of the record $847 million maintenance investment and $500 million for the sustainable Cooler Classrooms Programs which is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
The school is a 95% rebuild of the current site and will provide updated flexible permanent teaching spaces; infrastructure that will create spaces conducive to optimum learning. The building is forecast for completion in 2020.
Our community is benefiting from this investment and is set to become an Education Powerhouse welcoming students from Kindergarten to Year 12 – a primary school and secondary school – alongside the State’s first technology focused TAFE. Marsden High School will be relocated to the new Education Precinct with increased capacity. The previous site of Marsden High school will become a state level Netball Facility with both outdoor and indoor courts for competition. Meadowbank Public School will be relocated to the new Meadowbank facility. The current location will be utilised as public space which could see a playing oval, community hall and playgrounds facilities, depending on the consultation process with locals in the area. Not a blade of grass will be sold or developed at the Marsden and Meadowbank Primary School sites. They will remain for community use as sport or open space. The new schools are due for completion in 2021.
New Smalls Road Public School In 2015 I stood beside residents fighting to retain the entire site of a closed school as an education facility. We were successful – the upper and lower ovals were opened for sports in our community and the plans to construct a new primary school were started. This amazing new school is set to open in 2020.
Denistone East Public and West Ryde Public Schools Removal of the demountable buildings replacing them with permanent structures.
Denistone East Public School and Royal Lifesaving NSW A joint venture between Education and Royal Lifesaving NSW will see students learning to swim in a totally new complex which is scheduled to open in 2020.
Additionally As many of you may recall Peter Board High School on Epping Road was closed and sold by the previous government. We are moving forward to rebuild the high school and include a primary school on this site. The Communities Plus NSW Government Development, Ivanhoe Estate, is now in the building phase creating a residential community with infrastructure at the door. This will include an aged care facility and two childcare centres. It will also have a 1,000 Student co-educational high school managed by Sydney Catholic School.
Clockwise from top: Kent Road Public School, Denistone East Public School, West Ryde Public School, Royal Lifesaving/ Denistone East Public School Pool, and Small Road Public School.
Fighting alongside community
Against Overdevelopment Fighting against vested interests is always hard. We have had some major battles over the years. Your involvement, signing petitions, sending emails, phoning me, attending rallies gives momentum. The speeches in parliament, the representations to Council and Ministers have all been part of the hard work necessary. Whether it was:
The unsustainable 63 storey residential tower in Macquarie Park; The unpopular developments overlooking Blenheim Park; The proposal to develop TG Milner Fields; The saving of Smalls Road (now a school);
1 Successful fight alongside Community against development proposal at 6 Lexcen Place, Marsfield
“
I am committed to holding any authority accountable and advocate change for the better.
“
My eight year fight against the 10 stage Meadowbank development which commenced under former government and in which the developer has continually tried to increase the height of its development;
The preservation of Tennis World (which can now be master planned with Blenheim Park for a great community space; The smaller developments that we opposed, for example the units in Lexcen Place. Each and every campaign was an enormous community effort for which I am very grateful. My beliefs and actions against particular developments are not reactionary or with intent to simply oppose. It is because common sense, long term disadvantage and quality of life have mandated that a number of proposed developments be rejected. I am committed to holding any authority accountable and advocate change for the better. I could never repay the debt I owe to our community for it has raised me, from Ryde Hospital to local schools and now local representative. I will always stand up for and fight for Ryde.
1 Successful fight alongside community to stop 12 storey tower next to park AND start expansion plans for the park
1 Joined with Community at three Planning Assessment Commission Public Meetings. Successful in reducing height of developments at Meadowbank from 23 storeys to 10 storeys on each occasion.
1 Ryde council received $2.5 million to undertake a review of their broken Local Environmental Plan.
1 Community Opposition to 63 storey tower warranted a campaign approach.
1 Working with community at a rally to stop development at TG Milner Fields.

Australia Day and what it means to me.
“
I Am Australian When I give citizenship speeches I refer to a Korean proverb that says: ‘a great river never refuses small streams’. You see, Australia is that great river. Over the years she has accepted streams of people from all around the world; from Ireland, Italy, India, China, Korea and the list goes on. The streams provides nutrients, new foods, new songs and in exchange the river provides safety and a place to call home. Every time a new stream enters the river, the river becomes deeper and grander. The democratic freedoms we enjoy under the canopy of a unique and spectacular environment are second to none.
“
Australia Day reminds us to appreciate how truly lucky we are to call Australia home. I wish everyone a happy Australia Day.
The Seekers I came from the dream-time From the dusty red-soil plains I am the ancient heart The keeper of the flame I stood upon the rocky shores I watched the tall ships come For forty thousand years I’ve been The first Australian I’m the hot wind from the desert I’m the black soil of the plains I’m the mountains and the valleys I’m the drought and flooding rains I am the rock, I am the sky The rivers when they run The spirit of this great land I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice “I am, you are, we are Australian” We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice “I am, you are, we are Australian” “I am, you are, we are Australian”
