Ryde Connector – July 2020

Ryde Connector A Community Newsletter from Victor Dominello MP

July 2020

ePlanning Infrastructure is more than bricks and mortar. We absolutely must build the roads, rail, schools and hospitals required to ensure our standard of living. In Ryde we are investing in numerous new schools and upgrades. However there is so much more. The following rounded figures are eye watering; a nation-leading $150m TAFE upgrade at Meadowbank, $500m into a rebuild of Ryde Hospital, a $200m Victoria Rd widening and a $100m Herring Rd bus interchange, a new state grade indoor

netball facility plus additional facilities for hockey. This is on top of the NorthWest Metro and the completed new Smalls Rd Primary School and upgrades to Denistone East and West Ryde Primary Schools. In the 21st century, we also need to build digital infrastructure. We already

have Service NSW, which is leading the world when it comes to first class service delivery. People on the front line that are dedicated to putting people first. However, the frontline staff at Service NSW also need leading digital technology, so that they can serve you faster and with better outcomes. ...continued on page 2

ePlanning

...continued from front page

Other critical frontline workers also need up-to-date technology to help them help you. Teachers unquestionably want to spend more time teaching pupils rather than pushing paperwork. Nurses unquestionably want to spend more time caring for patients rather than pushing paperwork. Investing in digital infrastructure helps us reduce paperwork and thereby vastly improve critical services for the people of our great state.

Digital also enables us to improve transparency and make things more convenient. For example, we have created ePlanning. A number of councils have already embraced ePlanning with great results. Given the success and popularity of ePlanning, we have decided to mandate it from 1 July 2020, for those Councils who have not already opted in. Ryde Council will be part of this.

Now, Ryde homeowners will be able to lodge DAs online in the comfort of their homes, and see a reduction in assessment times. Planning has been a vexed issue in Ryde. While I am not a decision maker on planning matters, the biggest thing I can do is introduce much more transparency into the process. I have spoken to ICAC about ePlanning and they also agree that this level of transparency is important to reducing

My Role as Minister fill temporary, customer service focused roles to ensure citizens receive the latest information and advice. The Service NSW 13 77 88 hotline has been temporarily expanded 24/7 to ensure customers can access vital COVID-19 information, including the latest information on restrictions. The hotline is a one-stop shop where customers can find all relevant COVID-19 information.

Small Business Support Grants Small businesses are the backbone of the community and many have been brought to their knees due to COVID-19. We want to help businesses through the recovery and reopen their doors safely, which is why the NSW Government introduced a $10,000 Small Business Grant to help with expenses such as utilities, council rates and insurance payments. 487 grants totalling $4.87 million have been approved for small businesses in the Ryde Local Government area.

The past few months have been like none other in recent memory. Despite this unprecedented health and economic crisis, COVID-19 is a powerful reminder of the importance of family and community. The Ryde community has united during this difficult time, providing compassion and support to those in need. The Customer Service portfolio has been front and centre of the NSW Government’s response to the crisis and recovery efforts.

COVID Safe Check Ryde businesses can check, test and promote their COVID Safe credentials with the NSW Government’s online COVID Safe Check.

COVID-19 Support Turbocharging Service NSW An extra 1,000 workers are being hired to help Service NSW respond to increased demand. These workers will

With the recent easing of restrictions, businesses are reopening their doors and welcoming back customers and this online tool helps businesses get back to work safely. Businesses need to complete three easy steps – visit nsw.gov.au, go

corruption risk across the ecosystem. This will encompass all stakeholders including individuals within councils, developers, certifiers and state agencies. I have passionately championed ePlanning within Government and believe it will transform the planning system by providing an online environment where planning services, information and data can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

Businesses will also be provided with advice on how to integrate their COVID Safe status with Google Maps, giving customers a bird’s-eye view of COVID Safe businesses when searching online. This gives them peace of mind and an incentive for businesses to register.

Ryde motorists have one million reasons to download the NSW Government’s free FuelCheck app, with the huge milestone reached less than three years since its launch in 2017.

The COVID Safe Check is available at www.nsw.gov.au

One-Stop Shop Website I encourage residents to visit the NSW Government’s www.nsw.gov.au website which has all COVID-19 information under the one roof. Whether you’re looking for the latest advice on what you can and can’t do, or where you can get tested, the website can point you in the right direction.

Wowsers at the Bowsers

The app empowers motorists to make more informed decisions about where to fill up, by providing them with realtime petrol information for all fuel types and service stations across NSW. One million people can’t be wrong. Whether you’re a parent, student, business owner, taxi driver or pensioner, the app could save you hundreds of dollars a year at the bowser. Do yourself a favour and download the app.

Boosting Sydney’s Nightlife The NSW Government is proposing a host of changes to kick start Sydney’s night time economy post COVID-19 and beyond. The draft Liquor Amendment (24-hour Economy) Bill 2020 aims to create a vibrant and safe 24-hour economy, with risk-based liquor laws that support business. The proposals will help boost the state’s night time economy by removing outdated laws, simplifying licensing processes and creating a new incentives and sanctions system that rewards licence holders with a clear record. We want pubs, bars and hotels to hit the ground running on the other side, but we are mindful of how rules such as social distancing may need to be accommodated. Key proposals include: A new incentives and sanctions system with ongoing fee discounts for licensed venues that maintain a clear record; Removal of outdated live music restrictions; Allow small bars to offer more family friendly services to customers, by permitting minors in certain circumstances; Reducing red tape by aligning liquor licensing and planning processes; and Enhancing same day alcohol delivery regulations. Subject to community feedback, a Bill is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this year.

Education Infrastructure

...and more in the Pipeline While many aspects of life have been put on hold, the NSW Government’s Education Infrastructure has kept delivering the very best for our schools going forward. Ryde is truly the education capital of New South Wales with more and more being delivered for our area and there is more to come as our education pipeline is realised. Smalls Road Public was completed this year and opened its doors, displaying its leading intersection of design, technology and collaboration to produce a truly unique and breathtaking school. All who attended the open day will attest to its unique classrooms that embrace collaborative learning, modern technology and forward focussed design to get the most out of every lesson. I look forward to seeing the school grow in our community as it

expands over the years and becomes a piece of family life in Ryde. In addition to Smalls Road, the NSW Government has delivered on immense improvements to Denistone East Public School. The school received an entire new building that echoes some of the best aspects of new facilities and brings an update to a beloved corner of our community. Virtually around the corner are the

Meadowbank Education Precinct (Artist Impression)

improvements to West Ryde Public School, adding 14 new permanent flexible learning spaces across an innovative three storey building, along with all new library play areas and central facilities. These upgrades come with quality and functionality at their core and will provide for future generations at West Ryde. Kent Road will also be seeing their enormous new developments later this year revitalising the face of Ryde and

ushering in the same university level of quality to all our schools. Kent Road will receive capacity for up to 1,000 new students with 43 new flexible learning spaces, a two storey library, a covered outdoor learning area, a new canteen, administration facilities, a hall and a variety of new play areas. Eastwood Public School will also receive an upgrade to core facilities, currently in its planning phase.

And just beyond the horizon is Meadowbank Education Precinct which is the project set to lead the world in digital technology across tertiary, secondary and primary education levels.

Community Sports

$27.3m to support local sport return

With community sport and recreation activities returning as COVID-19 restrictions ease, the NSW Government announced a Community Sport Recovery Package to assist the sector to get back on its feet. The $27.3 million recovery package includes financial support and assistance for sport and recreation organisations across NSW. NSW has 5.4 million adults and over 900,000 children participating in sport and recreation, 415,000 volunteers and 30,000 employees. The pandemic has clearly placed a major strain on community sport and recreation organisations. Today’s assistance includes financial support for all levels of community sport and will ensure organisations survive the crisis as well as helping millions of NSW residents resume activities they love in a safe environment. Funding is provided to State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) and State Sporting Organisations for people with disabilities (SSODs), to ensure local sporting competitions can be run across the State over the next 12 months. This funding is in addition to the $35 million of grant programs and the $127 million continued investment in the Active Kids program for 2020/21. Further information about the Community Sport Recovery Package is available https://sport.nsw.gov.au/clubs/ grants/community-sport-recovery-package
