Ryde Connector A Community Newsletter from Victor Dominello MP
December 2017
New School Plans I want to share with you some great news for our local community. Recently, I announced with Premier Gladys Berejiklian that the NSW Government has entered into an exclusivity agreement with the owners of the Peter Board High School site to buy back the land for the purposes of building a new high school. We are also exploring the opportunity to build a new primary school in Macquarie Park. This will be resolved once the Department of Planning and Environment’s Macquarie Park master plan is finalised. I will update you on this opportunity when the plan is finalised. Our community was devastated when the Labor Government decided to close Peter Board in 1998 and then sold the property in 2006. For years I have been working hard behind the scenes to return Peter Board to public hands, and I am so pleased to see the land returned to our local community and cannot wait to see it transformed into a new high school. Our schools are the backbone of this community, and providing this vital infrastructure will allow our students to thrive into the future. We are delivering for schools in Ryde as part of the NSW Government’s $4.2 billion investment in building and upgrading schools, including:
1. A new high school in Meadowbank 2. A new primary school in Meadowbank 3. A new high school in Macquarie Park – Exploration of a new primary school in Macquarie Park, subject to finalisation of the master plan 4. A new primary school in Smalls Road 5. A new Catholic high school as part of the Ivanhoe Estate refurbishment
This is brilliant news for Ryde, and with the Premier being one of Peter Board’s former students, I know she is dedicated to seeing a school returned to service our community. As always, if there is ever anything I can do to assist you with state government related matters, please do not hesitate to call me on (02) 9808 3288 or at ryde@ parliament.nsw.gov.au Yours sincerely
6. Upgrades to Denistone East Public School 7. Upgrades to Kent Road Public School 8. Upgrades to West Ryde Public School
The Hon. Victor Dominello MP Member for Ryde
EASTWOOD
Parking in Eastwood
$25 million pledge to Ryde City Council The traffic in Eastwood is terrible and it is getting worse. The NSW Government is responsible for delivering commuter (train station) parking, and Ryde Council is responsible for providing community (shopper) parking and most of the problems in Eastwood are caused by Council’s inability to provide sufficient shopper parking. Indeed, the traffic is at its worst during the weekends when people often spend inordinate amounts of time driving around Eastwood looking for a car park.
In 2014, Ryde Council released its Master Plan for Eastwood. In their report, Council recognised a need to address the traffic problems in Eastwood, and make the public domain more accessible by creating greater parking capacity. On 26 Sept 2017, the new Ryde City Council had their first meeting. At this meeting, Ryde Council moved a Mayoral Minute resolving that Ryde Council is opposed to commuter car parking underneath Eastwood Oval. The link to the mayoral minute is below (at page 18):
http://www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ files/assets/public/councilmeetings/2017/extraordinarycouncil-meeting-26-sep-2017minutes.pdf I respect the authority of Council to make decisions in the best interests of their community. Rather than fighting Council on this issue, I have asked Transport for NSW to work collaboratively with Ryde Council to enable it to incorporate the train station parking as part of Council’s proposal to redevelop its Glen Street and/or Rowe Street car parking options. To this end, the NSW Government will immediately pledge a contribution of $25 million to Ryde Council to: 1. Build 300 commuter car spaces as part of Ryde Council’s shopper parking solution at Glen Street and/or Rowe Street; 2. To install pedestrian crossing lights at Rowe Street and/or West Parade. The people of Eastwood and the broader community of Ryde have suffered with traffic congestion due to limited car parking options in Eastwood for many years now. Another problem in Eastwood is the lack of pedestrian lights on Rowe Street and West Parade. The installation of pedestrian lights as exists in George Street in the City will better coordinate pedestrian and traffic movement. This commitment of $25 million to facilitate construction of commuter car parking and pedestrian crossing lights will go a long way to solving this problem. I look forward to Ryde Council providing details as to where and when they will redevelop their Glen Street and Rowe Street car parks, and a timetable for completion. I will keep you updated as news arises.
MACQUARIE PARK
Macquarie Park
$100 million for new transport hub Faster and smoother transitions between buses, trains and taxis will soon become a reality for commuters in Macquarie Park. I announced that the State and Federal Government are pledging $100 million to build a new transport interchange in Macquarie Park. This investment will ensure the construction of a new bus interchange connecting Macquarie University and Macquarie Centre, making the journey easier for the 20,000 commuters travelling through Macquarie Park everyday. This is really good news for Ryde Macquarie Park is a booming economic hub, home to 65,000 employees, a shopping precinct and a university, as well as generating $9.8 billion in revenue for New South Wales. It is so important that we deliver the most efficient public transport options
possible to the tens of thousands of commuters who reside, study and work in the area. The new interchange also means the urban amenity of Macquarie Park will be vastly improved. The initial designs proposed are able to provide greener, more pedestrian-friendly open spaces for those working, studying and living in Macquarie Park. I am proud that we are providing the critical infrastructure this area needs, and improving urban living in the process. Work has already begun on determining the final design, and I will continue to update you throughout this consultation stage.

Smalls Road
The design of the new Primary School in Smalls Road has been an exciting journey for those involved. Its design is unprecedented and definitely a state-of-the-art facility created to achieve the best possible opportunities for students to learn and reach their full potential.
It is to be a three storey building that will include 43 classrooms with facilities including a school hall, library, multi purpose sports courts and out of hours school care options for parents, a canteen, covered outdoor learning area and administration area.

Option 3a
The school will be able to accommodate 1,000 students, showcasing the latest innovations of flexible learning spaces designed to adapt and change for advanced technology and teaching requirements. Early works for the building start in 2018 with completion scheduled for 2020.

MEADOWBANK
Solar Lightup for Xmas Pedestrians and cyclists using the shared path are now able to enjoy a safer evening commute with the installation of solar lights as the “Bridge lights up for Christmas”. Around 33 solar lights will be installed on the bridge and on approaches from Rhodes and Meadowbank. The design of the light footings are sympathetic to the bridge’s heritage and character but are the latest in solar lighting and you will be able to use the USB ports for phone charging.
The Bridge, over the last 20 years has become a critical transport link with more and more pedestrians and cyclists using this pedestrian path and cycleway. Our community petition in June was successful and residents who rely on the bridge for a fast and safe route will now have improved night time access between Meadowbank and Rhodes. Local Member Victor Dominello presenting Community’s requirements for the bridge to the Hon. Paul Toole, Minister for Lands and Forestry.
STOP PRESS There has been some talk in the community in recent months about the TAFE NSW campus at Meadowbank. TAFE NSW Meadowbank is not for sale and not a blade of grass will be sold to any private interests whilst I am the State MP. The campus is an important asset for our community and it will continue to operate and deliver its services well into the future. The NSW Government is currently
Blenheim Park
MEADOWBANK finalising an exciting proposal to establish an education precinct which will involve part of the TAFE NSW Meadowbank site. The proposed education precinct is not expected to have any impact on TAFE NSW staffing levels and measures will be taken to ensure there is minimal disruption to the delivery of the campus’ services. I look forward to providing you with more details of this exciting initiative for our community in the new year.
NORTH RYDE
Open space win Planning Minister Anthony Roberts announced recently that Blenheim Road and Epping Road have been rezoned to allow for the expansion of open space at Blenheim Park. The owners of 86 Blenheim Road, 12, and 14 Epping Road proposed to build a 16 storey, 120 residential apartment complex, which Ryde Council rejected in early 2016. The rezoning of these properties will increase the size of Blenheim Park by 2,000 square metres. It was great to see Local and State Government come together to achieve this result for our community. Minister Anthony Roberts, Craig Chung (Sydney
City Councillor and former Ryde Councillor), Councillor Jordan Lane and I have all advocated to increase the open space at Blenheim park. I want to thank the residents for helping me fight to ensure more parkland in our community. This announcement is a win for open space and a win for the people of Ryde. I look forward to Ryde Council acquiring the properties and completing their master plan as soon as possible.
