CLUB NEWS

CLUB UPDATE MARK HENNELLY / GENERAL MANAGER

WELL CHRISTMAS HAS GONE, THE CRICKET IS NEARLY FINISHED, NOW LOOMS OUR FAVOURITE TIME OF THE YEAR, RUGBY LEAGUE COMMENCES. After the outstanding success of 2013, our senior football ranks have grounded themselves for the year ahead. Despite the loss of some senior and experienced first graders, this year looks highly promising and no doubt will be a chance for our younger players to shine. During the Christmas celebrations, I hope you all ate and drank responsibly and are ready for a fantastic year ahead after enjoying the company of your family during the festive season. This year will focus on our 40 year celebrations of Brothers! From the old wooden shed to what stands today is a testament of the support of this Ipswich community and of course all of our wonderful volunteers. Over the years there have been some very good and also hard times for the Club shared amongst us all. I can remember many a story of this fantastic Club, its growth and downfalls. In the late eighties Nev Tunny and I would meet every Monday night to do the roster and pay the bills. The roster was easy, we had 6 staff, the bills on the other hand, not so easy. It was based on priority, that

meant if the service was likely to be cut off or withheld then they got paid, if we had the money. During this period we were virtually surviving from week to week and as you can see survive we did. Tribute should be paid to the committee and many volunteers who worked diligently so that Brothers would continue to function during this extremely difficult period. As part of our 40 years of history, I would love to hear your stories of the Club, whether you helped build a wall, sat at the old Sports Bar, was part of an event, played for the mighty blue and white… share your story with us by emailing awatkins@brothersipswich.com.au. Be part of the history book of Brothers. The month of March will sure be a firecracker on the 17th! Our annual St Patrick’s Day festivities will again take place in the O Bar from 11.30am, kicking off with The Life of Reilly Band and a taste of traditional Irish dancing. Encore performance scheduled again at 6.30pm. Enjoy an array of Irish styles on the menu. Don’t miss this unforgettable day! As they say in Ireland…Cead mile failte romhat – a hundred thousand welcomes! Cheers! Mark

CLUB NEWS /05 FROM THE BOARD GREG WALSH / CHAIRMAN

I HOPE THAT ALL OF OUR MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO ENJOY CHRISTMAS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND THAT YOU CELEBRATED THE NEW YEAR COMFORTABLY AND SAFELY. I am happy to announce that all Board Members were re-elected for the 2013-2014 year. This is a testament to the strong leadership that the Board uphold and the direction that our members continue to support. Congratulations to all the Board Members. 2014 will see the Club celebrate its 40th Birthday! Please join us in the festivities celebrating the days that were and the future... what a great community development for Ipswich, and there is still room to grow. We have once again had to pass onto our members a price increase on our beer as a result of an excise increase effective from 1st February 2014 that the government announced, as has been the practice from previous years. We have kept this increase to a minimum to only cover these additional costs. We are now heading to the half way point of the Clubs financial year as you are aware the board have a number of projects on the table at this point of time. The economic climate often dictates to business on how we move

forward, with this in mind we are constantly reviewing our operating budgets, five year planning including forecasts and our strategic plan to provide as accurate information possible so that informed decisions can be made. We will be hosting the bi-annual Brothers Confraternity Conference in early March. This is a great opportunity for ‘Brothers Clubs’ throughout the State to come together, sharing ideas and discussing topics that are affecting our clubs. We look forward to welcoming our ‘Brothers’ to the club. 2014 Football season has started with training for the boys up and running. With Christmas just behind us, the boys are getting ready for the year ahead with strenuous training sessions to get them fit and strong for the coming season to defend our Premierships. We wish all our coaches in juniors and seniors the very best for the season, and for our players an injury free successful year. See you at the club! Greg

THE HOLIDAY BLUES School holidays can be a difficult time if your children are off to spend the holidays with your expartner but you can still be a parent while apart. It can be a very quiet and lonely time spending holidays without the children. Most of the time they are in the house and rushing about you as they go to school, sport or socializing with friends. The house can seem very big and very empty when they aren’t around and this can be particularly difficult around special events in the year. But it is important for the children to spend time with your ex-partner and their father or mother. Children can sense that a parent isn’t too thrilled with them going away so you need to do a few things to help them feel reassured that you are OK with them heading off and that they should enjoy themselves. Try to use this time to pamper yourself and relax so that you are fresh and bright for them when they return. So while you may be feeling sad, you need to redirect your attention to the positive aspects of this brief time apart and realize that you can still be there even when physically you are not. HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP THE HOLIDAY BLUES AWAY: • Use technology. Use a mobile phone or digital camera to send and receive SMS text or pictures or send an email. Be interesting, humorous with your messages/pictures and let your children know you are thinking of them. While they are not with you, you should make the most of the quiet time and catch up with friends, read a book or go to the movies. You might want to take a picture of you out and about so your children know you are fine and they can enjoy the time they are spending with your ex-partner. Just make sure that you only keep in contact once or twice a day – any more than that and you might give the impression you are trying to keep control over them and their visit. • Leave notes or surprises in their bags. When they are packing their things to take on their holiday,

add a few small notes telling your children how much you love them and will miss them, but also how it is important they spend time with their father or mother. This will provide them with reassurance about the separation from you and give them a few surprises while away. • Talk to your children before they leave. It is important to sit down and have a chat with your children before they go off on holidays to make sure they are happy with the situation and for you to reassure them that you will miss them but it is important that they go. Ask them about how they are feeling and if they have any concerns. It is important to put in some effort especially the first few times as your children will be just as nervous as you about spending time with a parent that they may not see very frequently. Try your best to help the transition be as smooth as possible. It will be worth it in the long run. • Give them a photo of yourself. Give them a photo of you to take with them and tell them that while you may not be there physically with them, every time they look at the photo it will be like you are there. • Make plans. Yes, plan some activities to keep yourself busy over this period of time and you will be surprised how quickly the time goes. Finally get into sorting out that cupboard or the storage space underneath the house. Catch up with old friends. Get to that movie you’ve been wanting to see. Go shopping. If you let your children know you have plans while they are away, they will know that you will be busy and won’t be sitting around missing them. So they will be able to enjoy their time away and know you will be having fun yourself. Plus think of the fun when they come back and you tell them all that you did and they tell you all that they did! Spending the holidays without your children need not bring on the holiday blues – by concentrating on the positives in the situation everyone can have a good time, after all ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder!’

BROTHERS GOLF CLUB HELLO GOLFERS WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION FOR 2014. Our Social Golf Club plays once a month on local courses such as Sandy Gallop, Wolston Park, Karana Downs, Lowood, Laidley, and Boonah and we have also planned four bus trips to resort courses such as Royal Pines, Palm Meadows, Gainsborough Greens and Middle Ridge at Toowoomba. At last year’s AGM we decided to retain our membership fee of $10, with the only qualifying criteria being that to be a member of the golf club you must also be a member of Brothers Leagues Club. While we like to get around the different courses, we do try to keep the cost of most games to around $20,

with the upmarket courses obviously costing a little more. We are a friendly, helpful and sociable group who are not about increasing our coffers, but more interested in giving our members an enjoyable day out. So why not come along and even bring a friend or partner to see how much fun we have. Prior to our games there is a game sheet posted in the Sportsman’s Bar at Brothers and if you are interested in playing that particular game, just write your name or your team members’ names on it. For further enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact Don Currie on 0439 725 313.

CYMS ST. EDMUNDS THE SWIM CLUB IS APPROACHING THE FINAL STRETCH FOR THE 2013 – 2014 SEASON. Most of our champions have enjoyed the school holidays but it is now back to work in the pool till the end of term 1 when we wind up the club nights finishing with our presentation night and AGM just prior to Easter. For those interested, it is never too late to sign up. For information or to download a membership form, go to cymsstedmunds. com.au or you can ring Greg on 3201 5070 or Kerri on 3201 5500. We are always looking for new members. The first half of the season has seen around 50 swimmers take to the water each club night. This has been a pleasing result as we’ve not had this level of patronage for a few years.

Our rep swimmers are hard at work as usual and have trained right through the holidays. After 17 swimmers from our club contested the December State Titles in either individual or relay events the club had 10 contest the Brisbane Sprint Titles on the Australia Day weekend and it looks like 8 of these have qualified for the Queensland Sprints which are being held at Chandler on February 8 – 9. After this there are a number of events including a camp on the Gold Coast in February and a relay carnival on March 22. These are all very important events for the swimmers that are aiming to qualify for the Australian Junior Titles which are held in Sydney in mid April. Greg Roche, President

BROTHERS OLD BOYS & SUPPORTERS HI EVERYONE, WELCOME BACK. Brothers Old Boys & Supporters hope you all had a safe and very merry festive season, not too merry though. Here we go again, footy starting, sign on days happening, training to attend, and then supporting and volunteering. BOBS would like to wish everyone “GOOD LUCK for the 2014 season and we hope everyone works hard towards achieving your goals and expectations for the year. It has already started as a busy year for the Old Boys. We had a short break over the holiday period and resumed our usual activities by the end of January. Saturday afternoon raffles are back again in the Sports Bar from 2pm so we look forward to seeing you there. We are preparing for the 2014 NRL Rugby League Masters Carnival at Runaway Bay in March. You will once again see Bluey out and about at home games with his Doubles, and we continue to seek your feedback about any other activities you would like to see on our agenda for the future. Ie: golf, fishing, bowls, and Gala Dinner. Prior to the festive season we held our Annual General Meeting which has seen us retain the same committee with just a change of roles. We thank Andrew Boxsell for his hard work as Secretary and we welcome Neil Rashleigh into this role. I would also like to thank our committee and welcome them back for another year, your hard work does not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.

By the time this goes to print we should have completed works on a new set of entry gates to enhance the main entrance to Brothers Seery Park to complement the new Ticket Box. BOBS will continue to set goals for improvements to make our Supporters, Families and Players more comfortable while enjoying a day at Brothers watching the Footy. And it is with your support that we are able to do this, so please continue to support us when we are selling doubles or raffles or even if you would like to become a member of the Old Boys & Supporters. BROTHERS CRICKET AS THIS ARTICLE GOES TO PRINT BROTHERS SENIOR CRICKET HEAD INTO XMAS WITH ONE GAME REMAINING. So far it’s been a very promising start with Brothers leading the Club Championship. This is on the back of both First and Second Divisions in second and first place respectively. Third Division after winning their first two games have struggled and have some work to do to be in the running for finals come March next year. Lead by skipper Chris Ellis the players remain positive and some committed training will get them back on track.

Our one day side (fourth div) unfortunately are subject to player availability and have had to forfeit two games this season with up to 15 players unavailable at times. But despite this, they are running second and are a real credit to the club as the core group of players turn up each week and put in despite playing short sometimes. Darren Lacey and Mal Neinhuis are leading this side and doing a fantastic job. Off the field the club continues to do well and are in a financially sound position. Looking forward to 2014 and more success both on and off the field!

ROUND THE GROUNDS WITH SARAH CASSIN / SPORTS & RECREATION CO-ORDINATOR

WELCOME TO 2014! I hope everyone enjoyed their break over the Christmas and New Year period. After the success of 2013 I am very excited for what is in store for the Brothers Kindred Clubs this year! Our summer sports – Cricket, Basketball and Swimming continue into their seasons after having a break over Christmas. Swimming has a busy month ahead of them with two major meets, while cricket start to eye off finals potential. Good luck to both clubs and their athletes! Remember that we live in a hot climate and sun protection and hydration are vital when competing. So please ensure you have adequate sun protection and keep your fluids up! And for our winter sport lovers, February is the time for Sign - Up! If you’re interested in playing, managing, coaching, umpiring/refereeing, scoring, timekeeping or helping out in any way please make your way down to the Brothers Kindred Clubs Sign on Day, 1st February from 9am, underneath Brothers Leagues Club, next to the canteen. The day will provide families an opportunity to find out about what the clubs have to offer by talking to club members. Clubs on offer for the winter season include - Brothers Junior Rugby League Club, Brothers Netball Club and Hancock Brothers Hockey Club. Please note that all our Brothers Kindred Clubs have once again been successful in registering for the ‘Get Started’ funding under the Queensland State Government. Get Started assists children and young people who can least afford or may otherwise benefit from joining a sporting club. Eligible children and young people can apply for a voucher valued up to $150 (GST exclusive) which

can be redeemed for registration at one of our Brothers Kindred Clubs. Individuals eligible to apply for a voucher are: Children and young people from the age of five and under the age 18 who hold or whose parent, carer or guardian holds a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and who are residents of Queensland. Or children and young people identified by two referral agents. Referral agents are: Police Officer, Police Liaison Officer, Local Councillor, Council Youth Development Officer, School Teacher, School Principal, School Guidance/Career Counsellor, Local Sport and Recreation Coordinator, State Member of Parliament and Federal Member of Parliament. The next round for the program will open in early 2014 so please keep an eye out on their website www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/getinthegame for the official date. All eligible children and young people in receipt of a voucher in 2013 are eligible to reapply for a voucher in 2014. You need a QGrants account to apply for a voucher. You must use your personal email address and personal QGrants account to apply for a voucher. If a club’s or friend’s QGrants account is used, the club will not be able to redeem the voucher. You can register for a QGrants account at any time. If you do not already have a QGrants account, I encourage you to register for an account prior to the next voucher release in early 2014. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me through the Leagues Club. See you round the grounds! Sarah

SPORTS /21 COACH’S CORNER TYRON DAY / A GRADE COACH CHRISTMAS IS DONE AND BACK INTO THE 2014 SEASON TO DEFEND THE SUCCESS OF LAST SEASON. Our pre-season was well attended with over thirty players attending and laying a foundation for the coming year. The rumours are out there but I assure all supporters that we will be fielding quality teams once again this season. It is great to welcome back Adam Stokes who is probably fitter than when he last played. Dean Daylight and I have adopted a strict stance on attendance at training and will demand a high level of attitude from all players. Our goal is to continue to develop the skills and ability of our players through variety at training and by introducing guest trainers, the boys more than likely will not enjoy these nights.

We have always been a family oriented Club and we will be striving to get more players and their families back to the Club for after game awards and some social interaction. There is nothing like a quiet beer with the boys, a meal with the family to celebrate that win. Brothers have the best facilities in the region and I want all of our players to enjoy both their on field and off field activities. It is a great chance to interact with our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A new football club executive has been very supportive of Dean and I and we thank them for their support and the direction that they are taking the Club. To all of our supporter’s thank you, keep cheering the Blue and White on and here’s to another successful year. See ya at the Footy! Tyron

AOOB

GIDDAY AGAIN OLD BASTARDS AND OTHERS. Great to have you back again for another year plus. Nothing much to tell you for now as the new year is pretty quiet for us. The special school Christmas party was again a great success and hopefully we will be able to continue this on for many years to come. The day started well with all volunteers ready for the buses to arrive with everything already prepared. Thanks to my wife Jenny for her year of preparation. Once the buses arrived the face painters Cindy & girls, were kept very busy. Then the show started with Simon, his daughters and son, entertaining the crowd as usual. Then of course, the day continued with Neil Duddy captivating the kids with his performance. Thanks to Hungry Jacks Booval, for supplying at no cost the cups, some toys and vouchers. They’ve been donating to

our cause now, for at least 20 years. So remember the burgers are better at Hungry Jacks. As per usual, our very own Brothers Leagues Club deserves thanks for once again supplying the lunch for the party. Santa arrived after lunch giving each child two gifts and a lolly bag. After Santa Neil Duddy took over again having the kids dancing in wheelchairs, on their feet, the best way they could. To see the smiles on their faces was something that lasts a lifetime. Thanks again to big top circus owned by Cindy and Simon, Neil Duddy, Hungry Jacks, Brothers Leagues Club and a special thanks to all those volunteers involved in making the day possible. That’s it for now, av a gooden. Jack Ryan, Spokesperson.

JOKE FOR FRANK I LOVE THIS WOMAN AN ELDERLY LADY WAS STANDING AT THE railing of the cruise ship holding her hat tight so that it would not blow away in the wind. A gentleman approached her and said, “Pardon me, madam…I do not intend to be forward but did you know that your dress is blowing up in this high wind?” “Yes, I know,” said the lady. “I need both my

hands to hold onto this hat.” “But madam, you must know that you are not wearing any panties and your privates are exposed!” said the gentleman in earnest. The woman looked down, then back up at the man and replied, “Sir, anything you see down there is 75 years old. I just bought this hat yesterday!”
