The best way to explore the breath-taking coastline of the reserve is by kayak, water taxi or scenic boat cruise. The Coromandel The Pacific Coast Highway Coromandel route is breathtaking and so good for the soul. With a mountainous interior cloaked in native rain forest and more than 3400 kilometres of dazzling white sand beaches, it is a relaxed haven that is unspoiled. Activities and attractions are plentiful,

from fishing and diving to hiking and cycling. Stop off and uncover beautiful art and crafts at the many art studios and galleries along the way. Located on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island and within an hour and a half drive of the major centres Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua.

HOT WATER BEACH Within two hours either side of low tide, dig yourself your own natural hot pool where you can relax and watch the ocean! Head down at night and see the glow-worms along the walkway to the beach.

WHANGAMATA Voted best beach in New Zealand 2018 The ocean beach provides some of the best surfing breaks and safest swimming in the country. The Coromandel Forest Park bordering the town provides many outdoor experiences, including short walks, mountain bike trails and old gold mining sites.

DRIVING CREEK RAILWAY & POTTERY Go back in time with this amazing railway that climbs the mountain through kauri forests to

WENTWORTH VALLEY WATERFALL WALK

The 3km track will take about 2 hours return. Find the well-hidden waterfalls along the way, cross two bridges and explore the two abandoned mine shafts. Don’t miss seeing the Wentworth Waterfall, which is surrounded by thick vegetation, and drops a whopping 20 metres.

THE 309 ROAD ADVENTURE The 22km gravel road connects the East and West of the peninsula. You will head on a journey through dense bushland with spectacular views as you follow alongside the river. Starting from Whitianga, must do’s along the way: 309 Honey is known throughout the region for the variety of honeys that it produces. Egan Park is a large grass and treed area beside the Mahakirau stream, a good place for a picnic and swim.

Waiau Kauri Gove is a spectacular group of Kauri trees. Waiau Waterfall is a 5 minute walk where you will find a pristine waterhole surrounded by boulders. Castle Rock is the core of an old volcano that rises above the bush on the backbone of the Peninsula. The Waterworks is a family fun quirky theme park about 10 minutes from Coromandel. Waihi Known as the town with a ‘Heart of Gold’ and named NZ’s most beautiful small town for 2019. As you explore the town you will find evidence of the towns golden past at every turn. At the top

Climb up to the lookout on the old Ma-ori pa site for stunning 360˚ views of the Pacific Ocean, Tauranga Harbour and Waihi Beach or climb down to Cave Bay and explore the caves and cliffs.

A spectacular, ‘must see’ walk when you visit Waihi, is the Pit Rim Walkway. The walkway encircles the entire pit and the views into the deep chasm are breath-taking. It takes just over an hour to complete.

GOLDFIELDS HERITAGE RAILWAY

ENJOY WAIHI BEACH A beautiful nine kilometres of golden sand and one of the safest surf beaches in New Zealand. Relax at the beach, fish off the rocks or try boogie boarding or kayaking. Enjoy nature coastal walks to Orokawa Bay and further out to Homunga Bay. Venture into town and enjoy the unique boutique shops and the various cafés and restaurants.

Travel back in time and enjoy a ride on a heritage train with Goldfields Railway. Journey between Waihi and Waikino at the eastern end of the

Whakatane Located at the mouth of the Whakata-ne River, Whakatane is a unique coastal town with a variety of activities on offer. Being an active volcano, White Island is a key attraction that can be

Turangi sits on the banks of the Tongariro River, which is world famous for its rainbow trout. The town is a good base for hiking adventures into the Tongariro National Park. Enquire about shuttles to the famous Tongariro

Alpine Crossing. And for the skiers, its just 40 minutes from Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu and 5 minutes from Tokaanu’s thermal hot pools which makes Turangi an all year round destination.

LAKE ROTOPOUNAMU Location: 12km from Turangi it is well worth the trip to walk in the magnificent forest of Lake Rotopounamu, and be wowed by the stunning views of the crater lake. The 2-hour loop walk around the lake takes you through forest to three beaches alongside the lake.

Come and explore a volcanic world of gushing geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools and some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world. The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing 15km loop trail that follows the banks of the beautiful Tongariro River crossing two large swing bridges and winding amongst native bush. The walking track is suitable for beginners and experienced bike riders.
