Enjoying life in the Bay of Plenty O n the afternoon of Wednesday, November 1, 1769, British explorer Captain James Cook and his crew sailed their ship Endeavour into the Bay of Plenty.
Cook’s journal shows he was particularly impressed by the beauty, the orderly cultivations and the fertile nature of the country, making particular note (grammar and spelling is his own), of the “great deal of Cultivated land laid out in regular inclosures a sure sign that the country is both fertile and well inhabited.” More than 250 years later, the beautiful region that Cook and his crew sighted has become a huge draw for retirees and new residents. Today the region’s prosperity is to a large extent based on that fertile land that Cook admired, with horticulture supplying a huge international market and providing jobs for thousands.
Along with that growth and prosperity has come a dramatic boom in the area’s longstanding popularity as a prime place to retire, with much of the action centred on Tauranga city.
The Bay of Plenty is the perfect place to enjoy your retirement years, and with its huge variety of towns and coastal settlements, there’s certainly no lack of choice when it comes to your dream retirement home. It’s been a favourite retirement location for decades, and with the huge growth in the region’s amenities and infrastructure in more recent times, its popularity continues to surge. With the cost of living in Auckland sometimes hogging the headlines, and with Waikato folk often yearning to spend their retirement years near the sea, it’s easy to see why the Bay of Plenty exerts such a draw, not just
from those places but from all over New Zealand. Beautiful white sand beaches, surf, fishing, magnificent scenery and a lifestyle that’s hard to beat are a magnet for retirees, who are also often attracted by the huge variety of retirement villages and the massive range of recreational opportunities on offer. It’s certainly a place where you’ll never run out of things to do, with
hundreds of clubs and sporting and service organisations catering for every conceivable interest. Stretching from the Coromandel Peninsula to Cape Runaway, the Bay of Plenty is a truly wonderful place to relax and enjoy life. And just like Captain Cook, once you discover the Bay of Plenty, you’ll be impressed.

Looking after yourself with Da Vinci Clinic N Unfortunately, as a result of our regular exposure to the sun, skin cancer is the most common cancer in this country. It’s often considered a problem largely confined to older people – especially those who have spent most of their working lives outdoors with little protection from harmful UV rays. However, the skin specialists at Tauranga’s Da Vinci Clinic stress that people of all ages can be at risk, which makes it hugely important for even young adults to have regular skin checks. That’s also emphasised by the New Zealand Cancer Society, which says it’s important to detect skin cancer, especially melanoma, as soon as possible, as early detection generally gives the best chance of successful treatment. A Da Vinci clinic spokesperson says having an early check is
crucial in setting a benchmark for future skin health. The “top to toe” inspections are thorough, with the clinic’s friendly skin health experts taking photos of any suspect areas. Checks, which are nothing to fear, take just 15 to 30 minutes and can provide you with valuable peace of mind.
If problems are found they can be dealt with quickly and efficiently, and it’s certainly much more sensible than letting them linger. “As you get older, a skin cancer check should be part of your regular health regime,” the spokesperson says. “It’s money well spent in avoiding serious problems further down the track.” Da Vinci Clinic skin checks are conducted by caring and compassionate health professionals and female clients are always provided with a chaperone. Follow up checks are organised efficiently within recommended guidelines and such is the Cameron Rd clinic’s reputation, that clients come from all over the country.
Da Vinci employs the highest quality staff including surgical, medical and plastic surgeons. While minor procedures are carried out at the clinic itself, others are performed at Grace Hospital in Cheyne Rd, Pyes Pa.
The welcoming and comfortable clinic provides expert and professional care in a range of procedures including cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, dermatology, skin disorders and skin cancers. www.davinciclinic.co.nz

The Men’s Shed giving back to the community H e might be 82 and “retired”, but Alf Parfitt leads an active life that would put many much younger men to shame.
He doesn’t see his retirement years as a time to take it easy. He begins each day with a gym session, and says it’s essential to keep your mind going and your body active. Every morning, from Monday to Friday, he says goodbye to wife Joan and heads for “work”, which also happens to be his happy place – the Men’s Shed, at the Tauranga Historic Village in 17th Ave. Here, older men with a huge range of skills and levels of ability meet to share their expertise and socialise, while making everything from rat traps to wooden toys and repairing items for community organisations. The big green shed is crammed full of tools and materials – a sort of handyman’s heaven. Open seven days a week, Classic Flyers combines static displays with operational aircraft in what Garry Bentley describes as “a unique hospitality environment.” Maintaining and displaying our collection to the public and running all facets of our facility requires support and daily assistance. “This is performed by an outstanding group of passionate local people who are willing to contribute some of their time. “In return Classic Flyers’ volunteers create many worthwhile results in our community while also gaining a real sense of personal satisfaction as they grow to be part of our team. “Many of the museum’s major exhibits would not be possible without the hard work put in by our volunteer crew, who also help out at Classic Flyers’ public events such as the airshow held in January this year. On May 24, the museum will celebrate its 15th birthday.

“The best thing about the job is that it’s so close to a café,” laughs Wendy. “We get to meet and interact with a lot of people, and we feel we’re putting back something into the community. We certainly know a lot more about planes now. And we’re pretty flexible – we can put our hands to anything.” Both Pauline and Wendy agree that the secret to a happy and fulfilling retirement is keeping active, meeting new people and in their retirement village situation, sharing with others. They certainly lead active lives – Wendy also works for the Cancer Society
“Our continued work with our volunteer crew is reflected in the fact that for several years, Classic Flyers has won the Heritage and Community category of the Trustpower Community Awards for our outstanding contribution to the community,” says Garry. “You don’t have to be ‘plane crazy’ to help out here. Many of our volunteers knew very little about aircraft before volunteering.” Anyone keen to help should contact Garry or Matt at Classic Flyers, phone 07 572 4000 or email: enquire@ classicflyersnz.com

Staying fit makes a big difference S taying physically and socially active is hugely important for a person’s wellbeing, although the activities you enjoy may change over time. If your career slows down or you retire, or if your children leave home, you may find you have more time to enjoy activities outside of work and immediate family.
Staying healthy and feeling your best is important at any age. That doesn’t change just because you are getting a few more grey hairs. Healthy aging means continually reinventing yourself, and although not everyone is expected to be as fit and active as the people we introduced to you earlier, staying active will help you live well, and even a little bit of exercise can make a big difference.
As we age, exercising gets more challenging but it is important to keep moving. Walking at a leisurely pace is a great way to start exercising as it will stretch and activate the muscles in your core, hips, thighs and calves. You could also try swimming, yoga, or Tai Chi. Riding a bike is another great option to keep moving, especially if you have issues with your joints. It is less harsh on your body than running, and it can be very relaxing to go for a ride on a nice day and enjoy the beautiful scenery here in the Bay. There are some amazing safe cycling tracks around, and Tauranga City Council has committed to improving it in the years to come. Exercise groups are also a good way to meet new people. Doing things together also helps with motivation. If you are not sure where to start, you could check at a community centre or local health club for special exercise groups for seniors. Or you could have a look at all the options available locally on sportbop.co.nz.
If you haven’t been very active in the past, you should start slowly and work up to your goal. How much exercise you will need depends on your age and
your overall health, but do check with your health care provider before you start. They can give you the best advice on what is right for you.

Exercising improves the way your lungs work, helps prevent and control diabetes, and it is good for your heart. Improving your physical wellbeing helps with mental resilience, too. Muscle strength is critical for preventing falls and reducing the risk of fractures, which is especially important for women after menopause. Strong muscles can correct a wobble and give
you a faster reaction speed which can prevent you from hitting the floor.

KiwiSaver conundrums BY DIANA CLEMENT
S
Boyes, is withdrawing 4 per cent of your capital per year. If you do that your savings should last 20 years.
The fees are also lower than they are with most equivalent managed funds.
hould you or shouldn’t you withdraw your KiwiSaver?
New Zealanders sometimes make the assumption that they must withdraw their KiwiSaver at age 65, or that it’s the norm to take the money out and put it in term deposits. Around 110,000 KiwiSaver members are over 65, and another 177,000 are within five years of that age, says Gillian Boyes, manager for investment capability at the Financial Markets Authority. Anecdotal evidence from providers shows some retirees are making partial withdrawals, says Boyes. Others may be withdrawing the lot, either to invest elsewhere or to spend it. Leaving your savings in KiwiSaver may be a better financial decision for money. Boyes says KiwiSaver is a great place to leave your money until you need it because it’s a tried and tested investment that is well regulated and well protected. The money you don’t need immediately should continue to grow within KiwiSaver, ensuring your nest egg lasts longer.
When you do need to withdraw money, it should be easy. You can set up a regular automatic withdrawal from your KiwiSaver and/or take lump sums when you need them. There should be no charges for this. Whether you withdraw or leave the money in KiwiSaver it’s worth giving some thought as to how you will make your capital last as long as you do. We’re living longer. In the meantime a portion of your nest egg needs to continue to grow. A nest egg left in cash or at low interest rates won’t last as long as it would in most KiwiSaver funds. A conservative KiwiSaver fund still has a portion of the capital invested in assets designed to grow, such as shares and property. A balanced fund has even more growth investments and should last longer. Some financially savvy retirees do keep their money in growth funds, knowing they may not need it for 10 years or more. It’s not necessarily the answer for anyone who cannot face the ups and downs of a volatile fund. A common rule of thumb for making your KiwiSaver savings last, says
From next year, your KiwiSaver statement should show projections of how much your total will be on retirement and approximately what that’s worth on a weekly basis. One reason to withdraw the money from KiwiSaver rather than keep it in is to invest in a fund designed specifically for retirement. One example of such an investment is the Lifetime Income Fund, which pays a guaranteed fixed amount fortnightly for life, no matter how long you live. The fortnightly amount is based on the size of the lump sum you invest. When you die, any remaining capital is returned to your estate. Lifetime uses insurance to ensure if you outlive your capital you still get your fortnightly payment for the rest of your life. Another example of a retirement focused investment is the Harbour Income Fund. The fund is set up to give a 5 per cent return after all costs. That’s certainly better than term deposits are paying currently. Any capital left on death is repaid to the investor’s estate. Rather than insurance, Harbour and others like it use derivatives and other complex investments to smooth out the ups and downs to ensure it can pay the promised amount. Over time, KiwiSaver providers will begin to promote products specifically aimed at retirees. Simplicity KiwiSaver
COSMETIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGEON
•
has already launched such a product, which also pays 5 per cent. With the Simplicity Guaranteed Income Fund, your money is invested behind the scenes in its balanced fund, to ensure the capital continues to grow. Simplicity uses insurance, from Lifetime, to ensure it can pay you for the rest of your life even if you outlive your money. The fee is 1.30 per cent per annum, which is relatively low. The downside of a guarantee is that it costs money, so ultimately your capital will be eaten up faster than it will be in a fund that isn’t guaranteed. But the peace of mind of a guarantee can be invaluable once you stop work. One advantage of investing in funds specifically designed for retirement is that it removes the need for active choices later in life. No-one believes they will succumb to dementia, frailty or elder financial abuse, but it happens. Boyes points out that if, like many Kiwis, you work beyond the age of 65, you can continue to contribute to your KiwiSaver through PAYE, even if you’re making the occasional withdrawal from time to time.
TIPS
• Retirees don’t need to withdraw their KiwiSaver • The money should last longer in KiwiSaver than term deposits • If you do withdraw look for funds designed for retirees • KiwiSaver providers are starting to open funds for retirees

What is a tummy tuck? Is the answer for me? Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a ‘tummy tuck’, is a re-shaping operation perfect for those who have tried everything to lose excess laxity and reshape their tummy. This option has always been popular. As people pay more attention to weight loss and have a greater awareness of a healthier lifestyle there are more who have abdominoplasty to remove excess skin after massive weight loss.

Always on the go! T
o describe retired schoolteacher Peggy Thornton as leading an active life is a considerable understatement.
A resident of Welcome Bay’s popular Greenwood Park retirement village for the last 12 and a half years, the sprightly DIY enthusiast, gardener, golfer and cricket fan also participates in aquarobics, plays petanque and hosts visitors from her former home country, England. As well as that, she has been chairperson of the busy Greenwood Park residents’ committee five times, finally relinquishing the post just last month. Peggy has played golf for many years and while she has now quit playing at her favourite Katikati course, she’s considering continuing at either Tauranga or Te Puke. “I haven’t given up on the Katikati course – the traffic has given up on me,” she says. “it used to take about

35 minutes to drive out there and now it’s more like 45 to 50 and it’s such a slow trip. “I’ve had one of my hips done and am having the other done soon, so I’ll have to see if I recover as well as I did the first time. I love golf and I’m frustrated if I can’t play.” Peggy took early retirement in 1993 at the age of 57 and came to New Zealand to visit a cousin living in Tauranga. In 1997, after several extended visits, she decided to move here permanently. The keen gardener first lived in Waihi, embarking on a DIY project to renovate her home. “I did the painting and wallpapering and knocked out walls here and there as well as redesigning the gardens. I also took up golf. “Then I sold my home in England and bought a house in Matua. There was much more happening in Tauranga – theatre, concerts, etc. I did up that house too, until there was nothing more to do and I bought a house in Maungatapu. “The garden was on a higher level than the roof and one day I was doing some landscaping and thought to myself that if I fell over, no-one would see me. So I thought it was time to move to Greenwood Park, where one of my mother’s friends lived. “There’s a lot of England about Greenwood Park. It’s very open and

there’s a garden right around my house. I like the space and the beautiful surroundings. It’s’ not like living somewhere where houses are identical and close to each other. There are views all around, it’s not far from town and it’s quiet.
She used to visit England every other year but says she no longer wants to make the long journey. But while she may no longer want to visit her home country, plenty of people from there want to see her here.
“I love talking to people and I love older people. I also have a silly sense of humour and people seem to think that’s good.”
Two recent visitors were women she taught 50 years previously and she says many other school “old girls” have visited over the years.
While she’ll miss her busy role on the residents’ committee, Peggy says she’s keen to serve on a sub-committee that’s being formed to oversee refurbishment of the village centre’s kitchen – her DIY instincts still to the fore.
“Some of them bring their husbands – I’ve had about 120 visitors from England and some come again and again. I’ve travelled a lot in New Zealand, showing people around.”

etirement is all about relaxing, taking life easier and making the most of things you were probably too busy to enjoy when you were working and raising a family. Feel comfort, feel ® support, feel TEMPUR I f an uncomfortable bed and mattress is contributing to your inability to consistently enjoy a good night’s sleep, the ultimate solution is at hand. Simply visit bed expert Chrissie True and her team at Bedpost at Home Zone, Owens Place shopping centre in Mount Maunganui, and try out the latest Tempur adjustable beds, with their amazingly comfortable mattresses. It’s a safe bet you’ll be amazed, and you’ll also be delighted when you discover they’re not only affordable, but also available for a limited time at a special price. Made in Denmark, Tempur mattresses and have to be experienced to be truly appreciated. When it comes to beds, Chrissie certainly knows her stuff – she’s been selling them for 16 years and can be relied upon for expert advice on the best bed options for you. She says adjustable beds are often thought of as being only for the elderly and infirm, but the truth is, they can improve the lifestyle of people of all ages. Considered some of the world’s best beds, the Tempur range features the Zero G bed system, controlled with an easy-to-use remote. The beds, which include the Platinum Supreme and Luxury Adapt models now ready for you to try at Bedpost, provide a wide range of comfort adjustments at the touch of a button.
The Luxury Adapt features include a contour deck which allows separate adjustment of the areas where the head and pelvis lie, relieving pressure on the pelvis without compressing the stomach, Chrissie says. The feet and head areas can be raised and lowered for maximum comfort and lumbar support is also adjustable. This option can provide real medical benefits and is particularly beneficial for those with conditions that are relieved by sleeping with the head or legs raised. The Super king-size Luxury incorporates two separate sides with their own remote, meaning your partner can adjust their side of the bed to suit themselves and there will be no “partner disturbance” to interrupt your sleep.
If you enjoy reading in bed, you’ll love the adjustable bed’s ability to raise your back and head to exactly the right position – and if you or your partner suffer from snoring, an anti-snore option in both the Platinum Supreme and the Luxury Adapt allow you to adjust the bed to relieve that annoying condition too. The Zero G motion base system balances comfort, comfort and practicality with good looks and is widely regarded as the ultimate in bed comfort. With just the flick of a button, you can select a pre-set Zero G position
which will transport you into the perfect relaxation zone. When the spine is positioned at zero gravity, your full body muscle tension is relieved and the circulation improved. Allowing you to find the perfect position for sleeping, relaxing or reading, this can also help improve your breathing. Finding the perfect sleep position not only helps make you feel more relaxed, but can help you fall asleep more easily and enjoy a truly relaxing sleep. Tempur beds come in a variety of sizes with a number of adjustment options, and they’re so comfortable, it’s claimed that once you try one, you’ll never go back to a conventional bed. A further recommendation is the fact that Tempur material was first used by NASA in the seats of the space shuttle, suits and helmets of astronauts. “Tempur adjustable beds and mattresses provide so many benefits,” says Chrissie. “But you really need to call and see us for a no-obligation demonstration so you can experience the beds’ incredible comfort for yourself.” Chrissie says Tempur mattresses are considered among the best for releasing pressure on the body and are top sellers worldwide. All of the mattresses come with a hypoallergenic, antimicrobial treated cover, offering improved freshness
Both mattresses and bases come with a 10-year warranty and if you prefer, finance options are available. A good night’s sleep is just as important as regular exercise and nutrition, affecting your weight, your health and your stress levels. We spend around one third of our lives sleeping, but the stresses and demands of the modern lifestyle unfortunately mean we are getting less sleep than we did in less stressful times - and our sleep quality is falling. Health experts say sleep is essential for optimum cognitive and physical performance, learning and memory, and importantly, helps to protect the immune system. Sleep deprivation, on the other hand has a negative effect on judgement, reaction time and general awareness. It has many causes, including physical illness and chronic pain, as well as stress, anxiety, the side-effects of medication – and of course, too much time spent staring at computer and electronic device screens. To experience the Tempur solution for a better, healthier and far more comfortable sleep, see Chrissie and the team at Bedpost soon.

I think it’s going very well,” he says. “In fact there is so much interest that I sometimes wonder when the bubble is going to burst. “We’ve got all these people learning te reo, including TV news announcer Simon Dallow and other well-known personalities, and that is certainly helping to boost interest.
Ngati Pukenga kaumatua Pahu Akuhata in the doorway of the meeting house at Whetu o Te Rangi Marae in Welcome Bay.
Leading an active life and contributing back to the community T hough he officially quit working back in 2005, Ngati Pukenga kaumatua Pahu Akuhata blurs the lines between work and retirement, leading a very active life while making a significant contribution to the local community.
Born on Motiti Island in 1944, the Ratana Church minister draws on his long background in Ma-ori education by being involved with the board of Kura Kaupapa Ma-ori o Otepou as well as mainstream schools in Welcome Bay and Papamoa. Pahu talks to pupils about the Ma-ori
language and traditional stories, and says he is greatly heartened at the progress being made by students generally throughout the country in learning te reo.
Pahu also stands in for another Ngati Pukenga elder, historian Buddy

Mikaere, when he is unable to attend meetings and functions, and is on the board of the local Ma-ori radio station.
And then there’s his rather more unusual role, involving which he describes somewhat irreverently, as “ghostbusting”. This involves traditional cleansing or exorcism of troublesome spirits, which he says are prevalent in the Tauranga area – and particularly in the suburb of Gate Pa, scene of a bloody battle between Ma-ori and Imperial Army forces in 1864.
Tied in with this is his spiritual cleansing or lifting of tapu at sites where there have been sudden deaths as a result of crimes or accidents. This sometimes means being called out by the police in the early hours of the morning to pray for the victims. On the other side of the coin, Pahu is also occasionally called
upon to perform blessings of people, places or objects.
Amidst all this, the affable kaumatua finds time to go to the gym in an effort to stay healthy – a bit of a battle when one is required to attend numerous events involving food, he says.
Pahu enjoys the regular exercise, though he says his lungs are “pretty shot” - possibly a result of his work with the New Zealand Post Office (later Telecom) in his earlier years. This sometimes involved ripping out dangerous asbestos from old buildings, as well as occasionally having to use the chemical spray DDT. Raised as Ngati Awa and educated in Auckland, Pahu first worked at the old Whakatane Post Office before transferring to the “bright lights” of Wellington as a telephone exchange
operator in 1964, later becoming a linesman. He spent 20 years in the capital city, during which time he and his wife had three children (one of whom passed away), before their marriage broke up.
In 1983 he moved to Tauranga and changed careers, working in a kohanga reo before becoming supervisor of the tiny school on the island of his birth. Since 2007 he has lived at Whetu o Te Rangi Marae in Welcome Bay. His tribal links include Ngati Pukenga, Ngaterangi, Ngati Awa and Ngati Raukawa. Pahu is also affiliated with the Ngai Te Patuwai tribe which traditionally occupied the north of Motiti, but also has links with “the other side”, Te Whanau A Tauwhao, who lived mainly in the 720ha island’s south.

U3A Tauranga celebrating 25 years BY STUART WHITAKER
I
t may be called U3A Tauranga, but the organisation has a membership that covers a wider area, including Te Puke and Katikati. U3A - or the University of the Third Age - was set up to encourage further learning by listening, understanding, contributing,
researching and participating in discussion and relevant excursions about new topics.
It is also there to tap the great reservoir of knowledge, skills and experience of retired people and provide a venue for the meeting of like-minded individuals to learn, contribute and make new friends in their local community. U3A Tauranga is the second biggest in the country after Wellington.
Established in 1995, It has more than 900 members and over 100 interest groups catering to members’ interests and covering a large variety of categories including educational, leisure, creative, computing/ technological, exercise and social.
We have started new groups in the Pa-pa-moa area because of traffic problems and petrol prices and people not wanting to commute into Tauranga that’s also why we brought some general meetings to Pa-pa-moa,
The organisation’s website has a full list of the groups. Recently several new groups have started in the Pa-pa-moa area and several of its regular meetings were held in Pa-pa-moa. ‘‘They were really well attended and we had quite a few coming to them,’’ says president Jean Garmonsway. As yes there are no Te Puke based groups, but there is no reason why that can’t change.

says the groups publicity officer Kit Divehall.
‘‘It is ever evolving,’’ says Jean, ‘‘members can put requests in for groups and we are supportive and if we can meet that, then we do.’’ U3A Tauranga will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on May 22 this year at Club Mount Maunganui. The guest speaker will be Mike Allsop, airline pilot, Everest mountaineer, adventurer and extreme marathon competitor. The MC for the event is Tom Bradley, best known for his 25 year stint as a television newsreader, pirate radio DJ, media coach and singer

Health checks are vital E veryone, no matter what age should pay close attention to their bodies, but more so if you are 60-65 plus.
Keep your health in check with regular GP health checkups and make sure to discuss any concerns or symptoms. Early detection of illness or disease is always your best defence. Regular health checks for should include: Mammogram. BreastScreen Aotearoa is a funded programme for women between the ages 4569 years, and this is a free service. It is recommended women have mammograms every two years but if you have had breast cancer before, your mammograms should be yearly. Prostate check. Prostate cancer is agerelated (one in 14 men will get prostate cancer in their 50s). It can run in families. The sneaky thing about prostate cancer is its lack of symptoms so getting checked is a good idea, especially if you notice any changes when urinating. Checks usually involve a blood test – called a prostatespecific antigen (PSA) test, and a digital rectal examination (DRE). Blood pressure check. High blood pressure is known as
hypertension, which is bad news for the heart. Having high blood pressure increases your chance of heart attack or stroke. It is estimated that 64 per cent of men and 71 per cent of women (between ages 65-74) have high blood pressure. Treatment for high blood pressure can involve lifestyle changes and medications. Get your blood pressure checked once a year. Bone density scan. Everyone will experience some loss of bone density as they age but some go on to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. More women than men are affected — approximately 50 per cent of Kiwi women and 30 per cent of men (60 plus years). A bone density scan measures bone mass. Prevention with adequate calcium intake is the key here, your doctor will decide if you require this test and it should be repeated every 10-15 years. Colonoscopy. Chances for cancer of the colon increase with age and family history. About 9 out of 10 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are at least 50 years old. You should have a colonoscopy every 10 years, and more frequently if the presence of polyps have been found in a previous colonoscopy
Ear and eye health. Just about everyone will experience some decline in eye health. Getting prescription glasses is essential for quality of life — and an optometrist will also be able to look for age related disease such as glaucoma. Hearing aids are state of the art now — hearing aids also improve quality of life. Vaccinations. Immunity can wear off as we age. Seniors should look
into getting new vaccinations to avoid nasty diseases. The symptoms of influenza, whooping cough, shingles or measles are often far worse for adults and the elderly. The influenza vaccine is often recommended for seniors as complications from influenza can prove lethal for those with lowered immune systems. The flu vaccine is free for over 65 year olds. Ask your doctor their recommendations.
