A Day Exploring ‘Our Place’ L et us take you on an adventure. It’s a warm Saturday morning; and you jump in your car ready for a road trip along the Western Bay, a route beginning at The Lakes and ending in Omokoroa by the sea. Standing on the footpath of The Lakes a sense of peace and serenity greets you. Fresh green shrubs and clean air surround you creating an aura of calm and comfort. A quick walk down the road and you are at The Crossing, Tauriko’s most recently developed shopping area, filled with everything you need from office supplies and beauty services, to groceries and dining out. A quick stroll around has you satisfied, fueled with coffee and ready for the road. Driving along Cambridge Road,

the rolling hills line the horizon, and boutique garden centres and cafes pop up as you drive.

Not much further and you will find yourself in the Bethlehem Town Centre. Fancy a bit more shopping? Pop into Options and pick up a gift for yourself or your loved one. In between browsing the shops you can pop into the post office and send that long overdue letter that has been sitting in your glovebox for far too long. Once you’ve had your shopping fix jump back in the car and are on your way. Where to next? You want to take in some of the country surroundings so you drive up to the Minden Lookout, where the clear late morning sun

shines across the region. Looking out over where you have been you will see the lush green of the land and bright blues of the ocean, with Mount Maunganui standing strong in the distance.

Take in the beautiful Wairoa River as you drive north to your next destination, your windows are down and the radio is playing your favourite song. Over the rise you can see the Kaimai ranges greet you in the distance as you pull into the carpark at Te Puna, after a coffee and cake at the local café, you can pop into Heaven and Home for a quick look over their latest additions, beautiful garments and home décor, which leave you smiling and ready to explore some more.

To work up an appetite, stop over at the Te Puna Quarry Park and explore the beautiful walks and views. You’ll find a wealth of native trees and shrubs in amongst sculptures and flowers, there is even a calming waterfall at the top of the valley. A hop, skip and a jump down the road and you’re in Omokoroa, taking in the beautiful coastal setting with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. By now you have worked up a bit of an appetite so you can stop into the supermarket and grab yourself some picnic snacks. Park up by the Omokoroa wharf and find a spot on the sand for your picnic. Relax by the ocean, read the book that you picked up along the way and enjoy your place in the Bay. Enjoy, ‘Our Place’.

Comprehensive Eye Care in Bethlehem

A

t Bethlehem Eye Care we have been providing eye care and eye ware for our local community since 2002, and it’s been a pleasure getting to know the people of Bethlehem and its surrounding suburbs. One of the best things about being so well established has been gaining a good understanding of the needs and concerns of our clientele to give more consistent, comprehensive eye care.

The Bethlehem Town Centre continues to grow, and the increased energy among staff and customers is great to be a part of. Being busier has meant changes to our team so that we can maintain the high levels

of expertise and service that are important to our clients and we’ve just invested in a state of the art retinal imaging OCT scanner which will be a standard part of our regular eye examinations. The OCT allows us to better monitor changes inside the eye and give earlier detection of macular degeneration and glaucoma. Investing in new technology is another aspect of our commitment to giving the best eye care possible, as well as providing high quality eye ware products to our clients. We’re looking forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Bethlehem community well into the future.

YOU Travel Celebrates 1st Birthday Milestones

O

ne year on from their rebrand, YOU Travel Bethlehem, Mount Maunganui and Katikati are celebrating having won a number of prestigious national and regional awards. This includes the coveted 2016 Westpac Tauranga Business Award for Retail Excellence (Large Business) and 2016 TAANZ National Travel Industry Award for Best Brand Multi Location. “We are thrilled to have had our most successful year yet and we are planning even more for 2017“, said YOU Travel Managing Director, Kay Rogers. “A huge thanks must go to our 30 talented staff and thousands of valued clients that make all this possible.”

YOU Travel Director, Catherine Membery said “We are completely focused on helping our customers “embrace life” through travel and it drives us every day to be proactive and innovative. This covers all aspects of our business, including our long term sponsorships. “A highlight for me this year was the cruise ship visit we organised for our local charity, Homes of Hope. We wanted to give the 21 children, carer’s and staff a unique experience to make them feel special. The joy on those children’s faces was just so wonderful.” YOU Travel are also long term sponsors of the Export NZ BOP Awards, Tarnished Frocks & Diva’s, Team Local, Westpac Tauranga Business Awards, Tauranga Boys College Titans Sport, plus various other schools and organisations across the Bay of Plenty.

Kay Rogers & Catherine Membery (bottom left) celebrating at the Westpac Tauranga Business Awards with partners, staff and clients.

Ms Rogers commented “It was a huge milestone for us to take out a major award at the Westpac Tauranga Business Awards. The competition was extremely high, so that made it even more rewarding for us. This particular award shows that we are leaders in the competitive retail market, not just the travel industry.” The YOU Travel Bethlehem team have also just won the GO Holidays Top Store Award at the annual conference held at the end of March. This is the third year in a row the store has achieved this result against all brands nationwide, along with the prestigious placing in the overall TOP 10 for the First Travel Group. First Travel Group General Manager Retail, John Willson said “Kay and Catherine have always tried to anticipate what their clients want and excel in delivering every time. That dedication to the very highest level of service has meant that awards are an end result. They do not focus on winning awards, they focus on their staff and customers - and that is the reason for their well-earned success.”

Ms Membery said “To up the ante yet again for our clients, we will be opening a brand new Mount Maunganui store later this year. Just like our cutting edge Bethlehem store, it will be designed to maximise the staff and customer experience and you will notice the difference as soon as you walk in the door. We are very excited to bring this revolutionary space to the Bay…so watch this space!”

With 11 years of beauty therapy experience, Why’s passion is still growing every day. Previously a hairdresser, Why has developed a love for beauty over the years. During her time in the beauty industry, she has gained three certificates in beauty therapy and four certificates specialising in eyebrows, making her an expert in the field. Why has also gained international training and experience in both of these areas. In the last 3 years, Why has bought eyebrow microblading to Tauranga using products from Germany and the USA. Microblading is a semipermanent 3D eyebrow tattoo, which is used to enhance or recreate the perfect brow. The treatment is ideal for those looking for a full, natural and perfectly shaped brow.

I’m very grateful for Chorn’s massages which quickly enabled my wrist to flex again following surgery and 6 weeks in a cast.” – MM

- Sammy Jay

“I have been to an osteopath, reiki, shiatsu, acupuncture, Chinese massage, physiotherapy and chiropractic, nearly everything and have now had the problem sorted by using Thai Massage, Bethlehem with Chorn and I feel better.”- Charlie

The whole process takes no longer than two hours. All aspects of a client’s face are taken into consideration, from face shape and hair colour to underlying skin tone.

“I have had immense relief from stiffness in my neck, shoulders and back. Her unique massage and healing has enabled me to gain more movement in my upper body.” – MP

Clients fall asleep as this numbing cream works so well, Why explains. aimai Vets is a new branch from Landmark Vets, who already operate clinics in Matamata and Te Aroha in the Waikato. There, we have been helping animals since 2004 and have loved every moment!

We are proud to offer our experience and expertise to the (dairy) farmers in the Bay and look forward to extend our services to many other people in Bethlehem and surrounds. We work from modest premises on the corner of Moffat Road and S.H.2, where we have a small surgery and a consultation room. Usually you will see our 100% electric vehicles moving around through the area to help out cows, horses, alpacas, goats, sheep, pigs or one of the many other animals you will see on the farms and lifestyle-

blocks around Bethlehem and the greater Western Bay. We offer you a friendly, affordable, quality service with a holistic approach and are working towards a carbon neutral footprint. We aim to help you, all of your animals, your business but also the environment. We will use as little plastic as possible, use biodegradable/ reusable bags rather than plastic bags, source products from suppliers that are environmentally aware, recycle rather than waste and of course use green energy and electric vehicles to reduce our carbon footprint. Hello...Can You Hear Me?

H

earing loss affects a growing number of people in our region. 10% of people in the Bay of Plenty report having a hearing impairment that makes it difficult to hear what’s being said, even when using an assistive device such as a hearing aid1.

For people living with a hearing impairment, using the phone can be one of the biggest challenges of all. Without visual cues, lipreading isn’t an option, and unfamiliar accents can be hard to understand. Many people either abandon the phone or ask family members to make calls for them. Now there’s a solution that lets people with hearing impairment reclaim the phone. CapTel is a captioned telephone – it has a screen that shows captions of the call. The hearing impaired person uses the CapTel phone like a standard phone, and everything the other person says appears as captions on the screen. CapTel has made a real difference for retired nurse Judith Edgeler. Since Judith got a CapTel phone, she has been able to keep in touch with family, make her own appointments and call for help in case of emergencies. Judith was one of the first users of CapTel in New Zealand. She heard about CapTel through the Hearing Association and signed up as soon as the service came to New Zealand in 2013. “Being deaf, it’s very hard for me to mix with people. This often leaves me feeling isolated. CapTel has helped me to keep in touch with people, which is vital. I can also make my own appointments, rather than having to go up to the doctor’s or dentist’s just to make an appointment,” says the widow from Lower Hutt. 1

Judith says CapTel is a “marvellous” tool for anyone with a hearing impairment who struggles to use an ordinary telephone. Many kiwis use CapTel as a tool for running their business. Angie London and her husband Garth own Whakaipo Lodge – a boutique luxury lodge in Taupo. Angie has a midfrequency hearing loss, and when she and Garth first opened their business, she relied heavily on him to answer the phone and look after accommodation bookings. “Answering the phone confidently is part of running a business, but I couldn’t hear properly on the phone and was always worried I would not get the booking details right. There’s only so many times you can ask someone to repeat themselves before it starts reflecting badly on the business,” says Angie. Angie heard about CapTel through a friend and decided to apply for her own CapTel phone. “It quickly became clear what CapTel could do for me. It has given me back my freedom and confidence, and I no longer have to wait for my husband to answer the phone. Even if I miss information, I can go back through the captions and it’s all there written down. It’s been incredibly useful.”

payment of $323 covers the use of the phone for as long as it’s needed, plus ongoing support for any technical issues that may arise.

The CapTel phone has several userfriendly features, including a speaker setting, volume control, and builtin voicemail where messages will be captioned. The phone needs a landline connection and broadband internet for the captions.

As a special offer, people who get a CapTel phone will also receive a free alerting device that will let them know when their phone is ringing. A limited number of flashing light and vibrating pager alerts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

CapTel phones are available for people with a hearing impairment or Auditory Processing Disorder who have difficulty using a standard phone. The phones are supplied on a loan basis by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). A one-off

Travel for as long as you can, as far as you can is a mantra I live by. The reason I was attracted to the industry initially was because of this and today it’s the same reason I am as passionate about travel today as I was when I began. For me now it’s about finding unique, exciting and manageable destinations to share with my family, to see the world through my children’s eyes, to taste, to experience , to see and explore all the things our great world has to offer.

Of all the continent’s Africa is dear to my heart and remains one of my most favourite destinations, although a speciality for me would certainly be Europe and in particular France & Italy. I have been fortunate to have travelled time and again exploring the countryside on cycle holidays, barging trips, villa stays where I can immerse myself in the local culture. From backpacking the world to my now preferred more luxury style of holiday no matter where I go it is more about the experiences and memories you create.

I was bitten by the travel bug on my first overseas trip at age 15, and knew then that travel was something that I wanted to keep doing. Since then I have lived in New York, experienced 27 states across the USA, plus spent time exploring Asia and Europe on a number of occasions. I have stayed with the local Karen people in Thailand, watched a FC Barcelona Football game in Barcelona, been to the Calgary Stampede, had an in-water experience with whales in Niue, and watched the sunrise over the Grand Canyon. I love getting off the beaten path and experiencing local culture and life at a grass roots level.

“If the world is your Oyster, I’ll take a couple of dozen thanks!” My experience with travel also strongly correlates with my other passion – Food!. In fact if you look through my travel photos, most of them include a meal of some kind. From French Onion Soup in Paris after exploring the Lourve, a cooking school in the South of France at our Villa after a morning at the local markets, a six course degustation at Collichio’s in New York, Kokoda and a cold beer whilst lying by the pool in luxury in Fiji, a meal of Guinea Pig in Peru before taking on an Inca Trail, and the list goes on ! I love the experiences that enrich our lives through travel.

Retirement Villages T he term Retirement Village covers an ever-increasing variety of accommodation and services for people over 55 years of age. There are many different types of retirement villages available to choose from. People can enjoy the retirement village lifestyle whether they are 55 or 90.

Choosing a retirement village that meets your needs and expectations can help enrich your quality of life and enable you to pursue your future aspirations. Most villages offer a great lifestyle to those who want to live independently whilst enjoying the beneďŹ ts that a retirement village can provide. Villages can have an emphasis on lifestyle with resort-style accommodation and facilities. Some villages can provide a full range of care options so residents can enjoy a village lifestyle for as long as they want and are able to. Each village is unique in what it is has to offer. Villages can range in size from two units to more than 300. The types of accommodation offered can vary from villas or town houses to apartments, and serviced apartments. Most villages have a community centre and offer a range of sports and recreation facilities. From luxury and exclusive to just comfortable and quiet, from compact units to large spacious homes, from beach front to park-like settings; older people are spoiled for choice here in the Bay. The range of retirement villages and all that they have on offer is extensive. Every lifestyle is catered for here in the Bay.

There are lots of reasons for considering a move into a Retirement or Lifestyle Village and village living has really taken off in New Zealand in recent years. If you think this type of living appeals to you, you do your research well and consider all your options. Retirement Villages vary greatly and it pays to

have a good look around those you are considering. At the majority of retirement villages, residents purchase a License to Occupy one of the houses or units. When they leave the village a deferred management fee of 20 to 30 per cent is deducted from the value of this license.

In most cases any capital gains on the property also belong to the village, rather than the resident, or their estate. Residents also pay a weekly fee – the national average is $120 - to cover things like rates, insurance, emergency assistance, cleaning and grounds maintenance. In some villages this fee will be ďŹ xed for life.

Brain Fitness - Leg strength link

Strengthen your legs. It’s easy!

A new study followed 324 identical twins over 10 years. Fitness and lifestyle of the twins were measured. They were given tests of memory, learning and thinking at the start and end of the study.

“Simple exercises like walking or even standing for longer may lead to healthy brain ageing,” the study says,

Dr Claire Steves, who led the study said, “Everyone wants to know how best to keep their brain fit as they age. The study suggests that boosting our physical activity may help to keep us both mentally and physically healthy.”

Leg power The twin with the stronger leg power at the start of the study, maintained stronger mental abilities and also the most amount of grey matter in the brain 10 years later. “It’s compelling to see such differences in brain structure and function,” Dr Steves said. Of all the factors measured, leg power was the best predictor of healthy brain ageing.

Whatever your age, leg muscles can be strengthened with any kind of exercise. The simple Aircycle exercises can benefit your brain as well as your fitness, balance and mobility.

Keep legs moving - even while sitting. While watching TV, sitting in the office or travelling by car or plane, using the Aircycle leg exercises will strengthen both calf and thigh muscles and benefit your brain. It’s so easy! The Real Taste

E

very now and then everyone needs a sweet treat to brighten their day. Churros are a sweet Spanish snack, consisting of a strip of fried dough with a variety of toppings, like a dusting of sugar and cinnamon. Originally from Argentina, Steve and Alexandra, owners of Mr Churro, moved to New Zealand in 2011 and are proud to call Tauranga their home.

real deal, just like his grandfather made it, and like the ‘Sunday’ churros he had as a child. “For us quality and service come first. We made them with love, just for you!” Mr Churro has just opened at a new location in Fraser Cove on March 23rd, just near The Warehouse. They’ll be open Thursday to Sunday, from 9am to 5:30pm.

After years of planning, taste testing, and exploring they had a discussion about what food reminded them of home. Steve says, “We concluded that churros are all about memories and tradition. In our country Churros are really famous. No matter if it is winter or summer, it is always a good time to share churros with family and friends. Our family tradition was to wait until Sunday afternoon when our parents made us yummy churros at home.” In June 2016 the team connected their ideas with their dream and decided to create Mr Churro. The key to their success is the recipe that has been passed down from Spain, generation to generation, on Steve’s grandfather’s side of the family. “Our objective is to bring ‘the real taste’ and create the perfect churro using the best local products to give to you and your family the real pure flavours.” It’s the

the supermarket but you’ve got to remember that there are other things in those breads to keep them lasting for as long as they do. With our bread they’re all natural; we don’t have other fats, just real butter.”

The Artisan Bread Bakers is a partnership business owned by Joshua Brinkman and Brooke Bryers, who are both well respected local bakers. Joshua is a qualified Dutch Baker and Pastry Chef, and Barista with a very solid background of authentic artisan bread and bakery skills. Brooke is also a qualified Baker, Pastry Chef, and a Barista who has done her Bakers’ degree in Tauranga, where she has worked in local bakeries gaining skills and knowledge.

As you can see from the team’s knowledge base, Joshua and Brooke are poised to provide artisan breads, cakes for special occasions, delicious pastries, and good coffee. They also offer a selection of allergy free foods, both sweet and savoury, even catering for coeliacs. And it may surprise some, but the pricing of a loaf of quality bread from Artisan wouldn’t be that different from the high end supermarket breads, ranging from $3 - $7. Brooke says that they have many regulars who pop in, with one lady coming in every second day to buy a wholemeal loaf for herself and her two boys.

They pride themselves on quality so all their products are made from scratch. Breads are handmade with passion, and it is ensured that all natural ingredients are used to make healthy products. Brooke says, “We wanted to show Tauranga what you can get. You can’t really get the things we do at a supermarket or somewhere else. You can get cheap bread at

Both Joshua and Brooke are inspired to put their skills, knowledge, commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication into their own bakery to share their love of real authentic artisan breads and baking to the people of Tauranga.

Leading the Way

A

s the first fully serviced subdivision in Omokoroa Lynley Park has led the way for development on the peninsula. It has set the standard with larger residential lots and reserves in keeping with the open relaxed ambiance of the existing community. The Tauranga Moana Coastal Cycle Trail follows the esplanade reserve around Lynley Park and will connect back to Tauranga and on to Waihi. The trail provides a pedestrian and cycle link from Lynley Park to the Boat Club, supermarket and growing list of other services and facilities in Omokoroa, perfect for the long summer evenings when ‘getting there’ is half the fun, or when you’re

not going anywhere in particular (this is Omokoroa after all)! The developers of Lynley Park have worked hard to maximise the views whether of Kaimai sunsets or of the Tauranga Harbour. This is true of the remaining sections in their ‘premium’ Stage 8. Sized between 1067m2 and 1389m2 with views across the estuary to Plummers Point, these lots are available now fully serviced and titled. Still to come is the final stage of Lynley Park, Stage 7, which, while delayed a season, should be completed early next year. While only offering 9 lots most will have views of the harbour either East toward the Mount or North toward the Boat Club.

Wonderfully Waterview

F

or something different Waterview Estate is a Freehold unit title development within Lynley Park.

Safe, secure and near the waters edge, Waterview Estate is made up of 95 architecturally designed homes. A fully fenced estate boundary with electronically controlled gates will enable residents to relax not just in the warmth and comfort of their new home, but within a safe and secure living environment. The quality brick and tile single level

homes, 2 bedroom plus study with single or double garage options are maintenance free. At Waterview Estate, there’s ample room for residents’ own courtyard garden, but they can also enjoy the benefits of a fully landscaped and professionally maintained community environment. If this sounds beyond reach, think again, because perhaps the most extraordinary thing about Waterview Estate, is just how affordable this wonderful lifestyle opportunity is.

he last twelve months has seen an unprecedented level of sales in our Village, and the associated construction activity. We are really excited to see our original plan translate from concept into what it is today. Woodlands is really taking shape and is developing that ‘feel’ that we hoped it would. A community within a community. We are also proud of what we have achieved to date at Woodlands and the feedback has been universally positive. And it needs to be said that it takes the involvement of many people to translate an idea into reality, and our suppliers, contractors and professionals have done us proud and we are humbly grateful to them for their great efforts. Our residents have also been unstinting in their praise of their homes, and of what the village is becoming and as it is all about them, we feel we are definitely on our way to achieving our desire in Woodlands Boutique Village becoming the premier place to live in your retirement.

At Woodlands we provide you with a licence to occupy a home in an independent living village. A brand new home which within the footprint

Stage one at Woodlands is almost complete with the last phase of that stage being the development of the clubhouse, native bush area and water feature and the communal vegetable garden plots, underway. This stage is exciting as we work with the architect to develop a plan of what the clubhouse is to become, incorporating into the final design the uses for which our residents will have for it as a meeting place, a place to relax and a place to get fit. Stage two has only 2 homes left to go and should be almost completed by the end of this year. Expressions of Interest are now being taken for Stage 3. We do not currently have a show home available as they continue to sell almost immediately they are finished. We are looking to have an open day in the near future of one of our completed homes prior to the new residents moving in. This will be a very limited
