Budget
Tips
The first step to planning a wedding is to set your budget. You can’t move forward with booking anything until you know exactly how much you can spend. It is important to remember that the dream wedding you have in mind may not be the dream wedding you can afford so be prepared to compromise on some things, to allow for others to flourish. First establish how much you think you and your other half would be able to put down on your wedding. Then sit down with your in-laws-to-be as well as your own parents and ask them if they would like to contribute. This can be an awkward conversation for some but keep in mind that it can also be a real privilege for parents to be able to contribute to the event. After you have tackled these conversations you will have a better idea of the
amount of money you have to play with. Before you book, make sure you read the fine print about deposits and refunds. If you decide later to cancel or alter any of the arrangements with your venue, caterer, photographer, chauffeur; will you get your money back? Make sure all quotes are gst-inclusive and not added later when payment is required. Be aware that extra time and distance to your venue can incur increased charges for transport, photographer, celebrant and catering. Once guest numbers are confirmed with the caterer you will be charged per head for that number even if someone doesn’t attend on the day. Standard marquee hire may not include linings and a dance floor. Hire of tableware cutlery and glasses may incur loss and
breakage fees. You may also need insurance cover with some companies. If you are hiring a hall, you may be expected to pay for commercial cleaning following the event and you can be charged for overtime by the band and/ or the venue. Delivery charges may be additional to the cost of your flowers or cake and suit alterations or gown fittings may not be included in the purchase price or clothing hire fee. Even postage of fancy-sized envelopes
for your invitations costs more than standard sized ones. Make sure you get all quotes, agreements and confirmations in writing and keep them as a record until the wedding is over and all payments have been made. Tip: Always over budget! It is better to have money left over at the end than to fall short, so allow yourself some breathing room to ensure less stress come wedding day.

Theme
Choosing a theme will help with your planning, and make that perfect day more memorable for you and your guests. Your theme will also dictate the colours and styles for your dresses, flowers, grooms attire, invitations, decorations, transport cake and more. Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. Double themed weddings are a fun way to give your wedding a real unique feel. For example mixing rustic vintage, beach boho chic, or romantic garden. Popular themes which can be mixed and matched for this year are. Rustic: Using rustic settings such as older buildings, farms and cellar doors have a great atmosphere and relaxed charm. Try styling new things with the rustic look – this is a great combination for an older venue on a budget.
Romantic: Romantic weddings have more of a traditional element to them. Look at natural golden lighting for your photos, fairy lights or hanging lights throughout, plenty of florals, and pastels will add the romantic magical touch to your wedding. Garden/Vineyard: This setting complements all themes depending on the time of year. In summer, it can be a more relaxed with a rustic and casual style, just remember make sure you have plenty of shade for guests. Classic/Traditional: As per tradition these weddings will more likely be hosted at a dedicated reception centre with a traditional church or chapel service. Contemporary and Glamorous: Also known as luxe weddings, for couples who want to add that wow factor with lots of glam. Large floral arrangements and
pyrotechnics on the dancefloor will certainly wow guests. Boho chic: Bohemian weddings are an eclectic mix of natural, rustic and vintage elements, such as lots of greenery and bare feet. Keep your venue decorations simplistically elegant with oriental rugs lining the aisle and altar, decorative pillows, or hanging macramé decorations. Beach: Beach weddings have always been popular, especially here in the Bay of Plenty where we are spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. Nautical

themes with blue and white tones, paired with shells, anchors, ropes etc add to the beach vibe. With this
Ring
A wedding ring is a symbol of the union of hearts At the engagement stage few couples give thought to the wedding rings, often leaving their purchase until closer the wedding. But it does pay to have an idea of the wedding ring you want when shopping for the engagement ring. Will you wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring together? Probably, so the rings will have to fit well together on the finger and complement each other. Most choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold can also look chic depending on the design. If the setting and style of your engagement ring is very detailed, a plainer wedding ring will offset it better. Contemporary trends range from rose gold which flatters all skin tones, to mixed petals, vintage inspired designs, blooming flowers, vines and cluster styles which adds a feminine touch. Another idea is to have a gem set east to west. Still popular is a simple solitaire – a classic choice. Pearls are ever popular along with crystals. For men two tone rings are popular such as white and yellow gold together. Black zircon rings are also gaining in popularity along with titanium, tungsten, white gold and even diamonds.
Don’t forget the all-important accessories like earrings, headbands, brooches, bracelets and the thank you gifts for the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
Traditional gifts might include a bracelet, a matching necklace or earrings in a presentation box that says something like “My I do wouldn’t be the same

without you.” For the best man and groomsmen cuff links, tie clips and watches would be ideal if opting for jewellery as a thank you.
Celebrant
9
Choose a celebrant that suits your personality
Selecting your celebrant is a very personal choice. You will need to take into consideration your religious beliefs, the style of ceremony that you want to have, not to mention the personality of the celebrant who will lead you. Make sure you choose someone who will make you both feel at ease throughout your ceremony as it can be the most important (and nerve-racking) part of the process. Some celebrants are very sombre and traditional, while others can be more flamboyant and humorous. It is important to think about what type of personality suits you both best and this will lay a foundation for exactly who will make your shortlist. From there you’ll want to chat to them and ask some questions to ensure they are the perfect match for you both.
Once you decide you should then be offered a personal consultation to plan the ceremony and discuss vows, readings and poems. The celebrant should also attend to all paperwork and legal aspects required.
Questions for your Celebrant:
• What is your celebrant style? • Can we write our own vows? Do you have a template for us to work from? • Do you arrange the wedding license or do we? • Will you require anything additional? Eg. dinner, travel costs • Will you have any other weddings on the same day?
Things to know:
• A wedding ceremony requires a Registered Marriage Celebrant,
and may be performed at any time of the day/night on any day of the year at any venue. • The ceremony requires legal documents to be signed in the presence of two witnesses and a registered Marriage Celebrant. • If you are members of a church your local minister or priest will generally conduct the ceremony and if you opt for marriage at a registry office you’ll be married by a Registrar of Marriages.
• Only those persons appointed by the Registrar-General as Marriage and/or Civil Union Celebrants and whose name appears in the List of Celebrants in the New Zealand Gazette have authority to solemnise marriages and/or civil unions in New Zealand. • Registered celebrants may also belong to The Celebrants Association of New Zealand (CANZ), who perform many ceremonies, not just weddings.

Rhythm & Harmony Set the mood with your music The 10 most popular wedding songs for 2019
Your wedding will require many different tones of music and you will want to choose songs that are meaningful to your relationship and set the right tone for your theme and vision. Throughout the day you will have key moments, which will involve a specific choice of song, and there will be other times that you won’t mind so much but will need a playlist or background music.
1. Perfect – Ed Sheeran 2. Can’t Help Falling In Love – Elvis Presley sung by Haley Reinhart 3. A Thousand Years – Christina Perri 4. All of Me – John Legend 5. Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran
Key moments to consider music for are:
6. You Are The Reason – Calum Scott
• Walking down the aisle • Signing the marriage documents
• Walking out of the ceremony • Grand reception entrance • First dance • Father daughter dance Aside from these moments keep in mind that there is a
large importance for background music at the beginning of your ceremony as your guests are being seated, and at the end as guests mingle. There will usually be a time for socialising before dinner and for the reception as guests are enjoying the
evening, prior to your late night entertainment. From here it is dancing time where you can flaunt your choice of DJ, band, or singer for the dance party to follow the events of the day and get everyone up and strutting their stuff.
7. Tenerife Sea – Ed Sheeran 8 Say You Won’t Let Go – James Arthur 9. Amazed – Lonestar 10. At Last – Etta James

Ceremony It’s time to say ‘I do’ The ceremony is meant to be the most meaningful part of your wedding day. It is the main event where you and your other half declare your love for each other, say vows, exchange rings and seal it all with a kiss. Your chosen theme will play a big part in the ceremony. You may have an archway, a special backdrop, flowers, ribbons and even a certain type of chair for guests, which fits your theme. If you have gone for an outdoor ceremony, then ensure you have a wet weather option for the big moment as the last thing you want is to be caught in the rain on the day. There are different stages to a ceremony and it is totally up to you as to how you make it work, but the event should go something like the following:
The Procession
This is the part where everyone walks down the aisle and takes their places for the ceremony. Traditionally, the bride is escorted by her father, while the groom waits for her up the front. The order of appearance generally starts with the family making their way to their seats, before the groom enters and takes his place up the front. You can either have the groomsmen walk the bridesmaids in or have them stand up front before the groom enters with the bridesmaids entering one by one. Lastly we have the entrance of the bride. Perhaps an important thing to consider for this is the music that will be playing as this happens. You may choose to have a separate song for the bridal party entrance and the bride’s entrance, or can make it all happen within one song.
The Officiant’s Opening Remarks
The celebrant sets the scene for the ceremony by welcoming everyone.
The Charge to the Couple
Your officiant will take this moment to highlight the significance of the vows. This may also include a reminder of your duties and roles in marriage.
The Exchange of Vows
Your vows are your promises to each other. You may repeat the familiar “to have and to hold, for
better or for worse” vows, or recite ones you’ve written yourselves.
The Ring Exchange
The giving and receiving of a ring is a custom of many cultures and formally seals the marriage. Symbolically the unbroken shape of the ring recognises the unbreakable vows of marriage and is intended to be worn for a lifetime.
The Pronouncement of Marriage
The celebrant makes it official with a statement of “I now pronounce you husband and wife” or, “I now pronounce you married in love and in life”.
The Kiss
The highly anticipated public display of affection seen at every wedding, a loving celebratory smooch!
Signing of the Legal Documents
This is the time to sign your marriage documents. At what point during the ceremony this occurs depends on the celebrant and personal preferences, however most people like to do this after the kiss. While this is happening there is usually entertainment of some sort, which can come in the form of a reading, musical performance or having your song of choice played to the guests.
The Closing Remarks
Your celebrant wraps things up with a few last words and usually ends with something along the lines of, “friends and family, I give you, Mr and Mrs...”.
The Recessional
With the close of the ceremony you will exit together as a married couple. This is the time for confetti if you are having any, and most people choose an upbeat song to walk out to which can add to the atmosphere and create a magical ending.
Post Ceremony Congratulations
Before you rush off to do photos you may want to spend some time greeting your guests allowing them to offer their words of congrats. This is also a great time to tick off family photos.

Keepsakes
and Favours
Personalised stationery and gifts From stationery to place and menu cards, guest books, candles, stickers, table decorations and favours, there is a world of options that need not cost a fortune. Favours to take away are given as a gesture of appreciation to guests from the bride and groom normally after the ceremony. Traditionally they were known as bonbonniere and were small trinkets made of crystal or porcelain. Later on sugar almonds became fashionable and they are still a tradition in Italy and elsewhere. Today favours could include personalised soap, chocolate, wine, jam, herbs and spices, cupcakes or macarons. There’s no limit to what can be done and even your guest book can be as unique as you are. Presents for bridesmaids and groomsmen tend to be more traditional such as necklaces and earrings, but there is a huge range of things like monogrammed bags, ring dishes, champagne utes, bottle openers and so on. There are plenty of traditional options for men too, such as monogrammed cuff links, engraved hip asks and personalised USB sticks.
Other ideas to make your wedding day even more special are matching robes for the bride and bridesmaids, crazy socks for the men, jandals for guests to wear or monogrammed sunglasses for all.
Tip: Renting a photo booth is a great addition to entertain guests, and can double as favours as well.
Reception
13
Time to relax and let the celebrations begin A large portion of your budget will be allocated to your reception so your choice of venue needs careful thought. There are many options when it comes to where you can enjoy your reception so have a scout for what suits your theme and needs and set up multiple viewings so you get a great idea of what is out there. Think about the closeness of the reception venue to the ceremony, the time of day, type of food and entertainment you’d like. Would you like a formal sit down meal with table service or a buffet (which might be more cost effective)? Visit your shortlisted reception venues and check what is included in their price per head. The functions team should give advice on how much alcohol to order per head for toasts and meals. If you’re on a tight budget,
ask if you are able to bring your own alcohol. If you are hiring a marquee you may need to factor in the hire of crockery, glassware, table linen and toilets, lighting, heating, flooring, tables, and chairs. There are local hire companies offering everything from vases to chair covers, candelabras and more.
When deciding on a venue you need to consider a number of factors: • How many people will be attending? Is there enough room for everybody?
• Do you want the ceremony at the same place as the reception? (This could save time and money.) • Is there a wet weather option – for both your ceremony and reception?
• Where is the venue located? Is there guest accommodation, transport and enough parking? • What time of year you are getting married? Weekend weddings in the typical high season (November to March) will need bookings very well in advance. Ask about mid-week or winter season options, which may offer you a big cost saving. • What does the fine print say? It pays to find out exactly what is included in the price quoted. Some places charge
more for things like set up or tablecloths. You should expect to receive a contract that includes everything you have agreed on, including payment terms, deposit information and cancellation policy. Tip: Have a basket of activities or toys for children to play with – this will keep them happy and entertained while the adults enjoy the ceremony and reception.

Catering Enjoy good food and wine For some people the venue will come with its own catering however for those venues who don’t, finding the best caterer for you can be hard work. The catering that you choose to provide will be an important part of the day, the type and style of catering that you select will need to fit in with the style of the wedding that you are planning. Ensure that you engage the services of a professional well established company and select a menu and service style that fits in with your overall theme and budget. Decide on the style of food that is going to suit your wedding as well as type of service for your meal. There are many different ways to get food to your guests. This can come in the form of a buffet, plated meals, or even the latest fad of platter
mains that are delivered to the table and shared around. Cheeseboards and grazing tables are another alternative, where guests can help themselves throughout the evening when they want.
Questions for your caterer:
• Can we sample your food? Is there a cost for samples? • Can we swap and change from different menus that are available? • Do you have testimonials from recent clients that I can view? • When do you need to have the menu confirmed? • When do I need to confirm final numbers? Ask friends and workmates for recommendations, consider not only your likes
and dislikes but those of your guests – ensure that you provide options for those with special dietary requirements (allergies, gluten free, dairy free, lactose-intolerant, cealiac, vegetarian and vegan).
Tip: After all the dancing and partying consider a midnight snack bar. The trend at the moment is the pretzel/donut bar. Get creative and have the pretzels hanging on a wall or hook.

Love your Cake
Traditionally, wedding cakes were made to bring good luck to all guests and the couple. However these days wedding cakes are more of a centrepiece and the options available are as broad as your imagination. Cakes can be round, square, stacked, cup-cakes, croque-enbouche, meringue, ice-cream, sorbet, chocolate, red, yellow, pink, depending on taste and your theme, even something to match your shared interests. There are some excellent cake designers in the Bay of Plenty, who are only too happy to discuss ideas and offer samples for the all-important taste test. Most cake designers will have an album of photos and a web site for you to view their range of work. Once the culinary masterpiece has been made, the artistry of the decoration begins. Your wedding cake will be a main talking point and should be a reflection on your style and taste. Whether classic, modern, fun, funky, sculpted, shaped, piled, painted or piped, the icing can reflect almost any colour
scheme or theme, so make sure you portray this to your cake creator. Practical things to consider when choosing your cake is the number of guests and whether the cake will be served as dessert. If you are getting married in the height of summer in the Bay of Plenty consider choosing a cake that will not melt before the end of dinner and speeches.

Beautiful
Blooms
No matter what your budget, flowers are an important aspect of your wedding helps add romance, atmosphere, creating impact and visual appeal. There are many considerations when selecting flowers for your big day such as the overall wedding theme, the colour scheme, the season and whether it’s a formal or informal celebration. Styles could range from classic, to wild or contemporary and there’s an amazing range of options when it comes to colour, shape and size. A good florist will help you choose what’s best for you and your budget. You might ask to see a portfolio of their work before settling on a florist you think will do a good job. Think about your overall wedding theme, your chosen colour scheme, the season you will be getting married in and what floral arrangements you need. You will need to plan your flowers carefully and order for the bride, bridesmaids’ and flower girls, the groom, best man, attendants, page
boys, mothers and grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers and ushers. Consider ordering corsages for your grandparents as this can be a great way to show how special they are to you. Don’t forget the all-important floral decorations for the wedding ceremony and reception venue. Tip: Bring in colour swatches and photos when you visit your florist as this will help to match colours to your specific theme.

Choosing your
Dress
This is your chance to be a princess for the day Finding the perfect wedding dress may take you on a search of many different options, whether you buy, hire, make, borrow, inherit or have it designed. The most important thing is not how much it costs or what colour the dress is, but how it makes you feel when you are in it. You need to love your dress, that way when you are taking those graceful steps down the aisle you will feel beautiful and all the more at ease. Have a good browse through various blogs, magazines and websites to get a good understanding of what bridal boutiques you want to visit. If you like a particular brand you
can look at who their stockists are on their website and this generally points out the type of boutiques that stock your style. Bear in mind that most boutiques will charge for fittings so you will want to make the most out of your visit. Once you are booked in, prepare yourself by picking out your favourites on their website. You generally get the chance to try on six or so dresses, so suggest you have a good selection ready to save time. If you are having your dress made, it is important to have an idea of what styles look great on you. It might be beneficial for you to bring
Make your parents
in some pictures of what you are looking for or even try on various dresses in store to understand your ideal look. You could have a look in fabric stores and request swatches of materials, lace and ribbon that you can take to your dressmaker and they should be able to guide you the rest of the way. Having a gown designed and made just for you is the ultimate in individuality, but it will cost you more than a ready made dress.
Your wedding gown does not need to be a traditional bridal style, colour or price. Look at ball gowns, cocktail outfits and maxi dresses for something just that little bit different. There are plenty of choices that are off-beat and not traditionally bridal. Tip: When getting your dress altered, make sure you can sit in it before they make the dress smaller.
feel special
One of the happiest days of your parents lives will be your wedding day. You are leaving the nest, if you haven’t already, and starting a new chapter of your life with your partner, and this is a big milestone for them as well. Celebrate with your parents and make them feel special.
Wear something of theirs If you’re following tradition, the bride will need “something borrowed” for her trip down the aisle. Talk to your mum and about a family heirloom, maybe a veil, earrings, or brooch could be ideas. Grooms can also get involved and borrow a tie or cufflinks from their dad.
Include them in your ceremony
It’s tradition that your dad will walk you down the aisle but consider having both your mum and dad walk you to the altar. And give them both a hug and kiss before taking your place.
Give them a shout out
Your parents raised you and had a huge hand in making you who you are today and possibly helped you plan and pay for your wedding, so they deserve a little extra love. Don’t forget to thank them in your wedding toast.
Schedule a photo session
There are hundreds of photos you will want taken on your big day,
but make sure you schedule a time to get some special photos with your parents.
Play a song just for them
You’re going to need a big playlist to keep the music going from the beginning of your reception to the end of the night, so why not throw in a couple of your parents favourite songs and encourage them to get up on the dance floor.
Share a private moment
It will be a very busy day, and it will be hard to spend time with all your guests but make the time, even for a few moments to chat to your mum and dad, or take them to the dance floor. Remember to thank them for all their help, love and support – it will be appreciated more than you will ever know.

Style Shoes
Accessories to transform your look Step in tune Accessories can truly transform a look and tell the story of your own personal style. It’s all about finding the balance with details and understanding what is necessary and what becomes too much. The key to bridal accessories is that they should draw the eye to the dress rather than over power. If your dress is simple and elegant, you can be more daring with jewellery and accessories. Pearl necklaces and earrings are a classic and timeless look. Sparkles look amazing against white and Swarovski have elegant stunning sets. If your dress is already ornate with beading or sequins then less is more! If your dress has a statement back, then you won’t want a long veil to take away from this aspect of the dress. The most important thing is that you feel beautiful and comfortable.
The key to finding the perfect wedding shoes is to find a pair that will be comfortable. This may sound very practical, but will save your feet on your special day. If you want all the glamour and elegance for the ceremony and photos then go for the gorgeous high heeled shoes, but would suggest having a pair of back up shoes for the reception that you can change into without anyone noticing any difference. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right shoe for your magical moment: Tip: Choose a comfortable garter that fits around your upper leg. They do come in sizes. It should not be too tight, but should also not fall off when you walk. Be sure to try it on before your wedding day.
Colour
Will you match your dress or choose contrasting colours for a point of difference? If matching colours, ensure you take a sample of your dress with you for colour matching.
Comfort
A low height or block heel for comfort will ensure you last the whole day.
Location
Consider your wedding location, if you will be walking on grass you will need wedges or stoppers to prevent sinking as you walk.
Waste not!
Are these shoes only for your special day or do you wish to wear them again? If you buy fabric shoes, then it leaves the option to dye the shoes to use at another event in the future.

Make-up
Your Day
Barely there make-up with a natural look Make sure you leave plenty of time to enjoy being pampered with your hair and makeup. It is an enjoyable experience and will help you to relax before the big event. It is recommended to have a make-up trial at the same time as your hair trial so that you can get a picture of what you will look like on the day. It will also help you to get a gauge on how much time you will need to put aside for getting ready. Make-up artists know what they are doing, as long as you are clear with what you are wanting, it should be easy to
Plan your hairstyle well in advance of your wedding day especially if you are thinking about growing or colouring your hair. Collect images of hair styles you think would suit your big day and take them along to your stylist who will be happy to help work out the best style, colour and cut. Arrange for a trial styling and take along any accessories you plan on wearing in your hair, to ensure you are happy with the hairstyle you have chosen and make sure you have firm bookings for the wedding day. You want to feel beautiful and confident but also be comfortable, so make sure you have considered all factors.
There are many options and aspects to consider, such as a hair style that links in with your overall theme and the style of your gown. You could be contemporary, have a vintage or retro style, or go bohemian. A major decision is whether to have your hair loose and flowing for a natural look or an up do for a more sophisticated look. Most brides prefer to have their hair done together with their bridesmaids on the day of the wedding. Many stylists, and makeup artists, will visit you at home or wherever you are preparing for the wedding to save stress.

trust your expert and relax on the day. Be careful not to overdo it and be too different from your usual style. Your makeup should be timeless, so that in ten years’ time when you look back at your photos you will still love how you looked. Also it is important to remember that long lasting makeup is a must so it still looks amazing well after the ceremony. Tip: Pack a small makeup bag so you can touch up your makeup on the day.
Groom
19
Create a personal look to match their partner’s style For sophistication the threepiece suit is on trend, but it does depend on the theme of the wedding, the venue and the degree of formality. The groom usually wears something to distinguish him from his best man and groomsmen. They might wear the same suits but different coloured shirts or perhaps a differently styled jacket. Men too come in all shapes and sizes and care should be taken to choose a suit, or outfit to suit their body type. For formal weddings a tall, thin guy might suit a double breasted jacket and pleated trousers, whereas a shorter male may suit a longer jacket and tailored trousers. Small touches make all the difference such as coordinated ties, matching socks or special cufflinks which work together to blend with
the tone of the ceremony and overall colour scheme. Also have a think about how the groomsmen will look alongside the bridesmaids - will the style of their outfits, and colours, match? Create a stand-out look by introducing a selection of shades and styles. Use the same cloth for the groom and groomsmen but tweak style and detailing for a strong and cohesive, yet individual look. The choice of footwear will also depend, to some extent, on the style and formality of the wedding, along with the key colour theme. Traditionally the male attendants will all wear matching footwear. Let’s not forget the hair which will need styling a week ahead of the wedding to give it time to settle for the photographs. Extra care with the
cut and conditioning will ensure all the men look their best. A manicure will have his hands looking good for the photos. The fathers of the bride and groom will also want to look their best and a bit of coordination between all parties will ensure that there are no fashion faux pas on the day. Generally speaking
there should be the same level of formality for all the men with the fathers perhaps distinguishing themselves with different coloured waistcoats or ties and matching their buttonholes. Tip: Coloured socks are a great way to show personality.

Same-Sex F inding g th he perfect attire can be hard enough, but to find complementary wedding attire for same-sex partners without spoiling the wedding day reveal can be a bit daunting. We have put together some shopping tips to help you out. Spend some time together looking through wedding attire inspiration, and get an idea on specific shades, fabrics and silhouettes that appeal to both of you. Look through bridal magazines, men’s fashion magazines, wedding attire inspiration websites and Pinterest to see how other same-sex couples played with complementary designs and colours. Decide on your level of formality, and your plan to complement each other before you go to a boutique or retailer.
Consider Pre-Shopping Together
It’s not traditional, but one way to make sure you’re both on the same page is to try on a few looks together. This will help both of you get a feel for what styles are most appealing to you and give you insight into what your partner is leaning toward. Of course, you run the risk of finding the perfect piece and your partner
Wedding Attire seeing you try it on. In that case, simply make a note of it without trying it on and return for it later.
Make a Plan for Accessories
Veils, belts, suspenders, bow ties and boutonnieres help pull wedding looks together, so decide early on which shades, styles, fabrics and designs are acceptable for these accents as well. It’s not necessary to let your partner know if you plan to add a bow tie or a veil, but any sort of flowers will likely be ordered in bulk, so this is an opportunity to help pull your same-sex wedding attire looks together.
Designate a Point Person
Have someone who is a go between the both of you. This person may be a salesperson at a boutique, a wedding planner or a close friend. They need to be someone both of you trust to go along for dress or suit shopping, and someone who has a sense of your attire ground rules. You might even enlist a few people to do this job, like having both of your first attendants work together to help you pick same-sex wedding attire and keep it complementary.

Mother of the Bride

Mums are the best!
Tradition says that the mother of the bride chooses her outfit first, but it’s also become customary to discuss choices with the mother of the groom beforehand if you wish. Wait until the bride has decided on the wedding style and colour theme so that you can coordinate your outfit accordingly. Look at a dress style that is appropriate to the style of wedding, whether casual, semi-formal or formal. The time of day can also dictate whether you wear short, cocktail length or a floor length gown, or whether you wear a hat. Pick a colour range that complements your natural colouring, the season and the wedding party. You can either select the same general colour palette but a different tone, or go for the diametrically opposite
shade on the colour wheel. Alternatively you could select a patterned fabric that highlights the colour of the bridesmaids’ gowns or go for a neutral outfit with colourful accessories.
Look for gorgeous, but also for comfort. If you are unsure of the weather, consider a jacket, bolero, shrug, wrap or sleeves and make sure your outfit will let you sit, stand, walk and dance without fear!
Tip: Accessories can make or break an outfit, so take care with shoes, bag, hat and jewellery. Less is usually more and a single statement item will always be classier than the busy look.
decide on what they will wear while standing with you. Think about the theme and colour scheme for your day and choose outfits for both
sides that will complement each other without taking away from the most important people, you and your partner.
Your Entourage
Important people on the day You would normally have the people who are closest to you and your other half who will help make you day special. They will be the ones to assist with the planning and lead up, also being there to help on your wedding day and making sure the day runs as smooth as possible. This decision can be a tricky one, but is exciting and essential. You can have as many people as you want in your entourage, but remember that having more members could also mean more expenses. To give you an idea on who to consider, and depending on how big or small you would like to have your wedding party, you can have more than one or less people. • Best Man • Maid of Honour

By tradition, both are in charge of the bridal shower and the bachelor party.

entrance
Your theme will reflect your transport and arrival You might want to make your entrance or exit in unique style, but it is wise to check out availability and practicality when making your choice of wedding vehicle. Whatever type of transport you choose, you will still want comfort, punctuality and reliability.
Here are some ideas for your big day:
• Classic or vintage cars - The set end to be booked up well in advance so act quickly once you’ve decided on the date for the wedding. • Boat - If you’re going near waterways, arriving by boat could be memorable. • Horse and carriage or horseback - For a truly romantic start to your ceremony nothing can beat
arriving in a horse drawn carriage. • Helicopter - What about a chopper for serious thrills and a grand entrance? If there’s a distance to travel it could also be quite practical. • Two wheelers - For something even less conventional, you might consider a vintage motor bike and side car or a tandem bike, or even a scooter if you don’t have far to travel. • Double-decker bus or coach, are a fun way to get around and can also transport your wedding guests, ensuring they get to the ceremony, reception venue and back to their accommodation safely.

Wedding Wedding stationery is not as it used to be. In the place of invitations are wedding websites and RSVPs are no longer written, but emailed, texted or online. However, in this digital age it is important to remember your guests will love and appreciate the odd bit of snail mail and personalised words, so a mix of both works best. The most important thing to remember is that your stationery, from invites to thank you cards, should have a similar look and design. Your aim is to be able to lay everything out and have it look uniform. Bearing in mind that your ‘Save the Dates’ will go out first, it would be best to first design your invitations so that you can create everything else to match.
‘Save the Date’
If you are not sure, the ‘Save the Date’ is a placeholder to send to your guests before you are ready to finalise details for your big day. This card is sent out well in advance and not long after the engagement party so as to announce the date of your nuptials and allows your guests to save your date. On your ‘Save the Date’ the information you should include is the date, your names, the town or region you will be having the
Stationery
wedding and the line ‘formal invitations to follow’.
Invitations
Sent out between six and four months, your invitations are the most necessary form of stationery. On your invitation you should confirm the date and time, have information on where the wedding will be held and offer a nod to your family and those contributing. If you are not using a wedding website, then your invitation should be accompanied by an RSVP card and an information card with directions and information on gifts and registries.
Wedding Website
These are the latest fad when it comes to the modern wedding. A website is a great way to get all information to your guests, as well as monitor your RSVPs. Websites can really be whatever you want them to be so have a browse online at some example sites and find a great web designer who you can collaborate with to make it happen. Your website can offer links to accommodation options, and your online registry. It can also include maps to your wedding locations, timelines, and most importantly an easy online form where your guests can RSVP and ask questions.
Other stationery to remember includes:
• Programmes – The run of service for the ceremony. • Seating chart – Where guests will be seated at the reception. • Name place cards – Place settings helping guests to find their seats. • Menu – So that there is no confusion about the food. • ‘Thank You’ cards – The most personalised piece of
stationery, where you and your groom write a thank you note post-wedding thanking your guests for attending and any gifts that you have received.
Tip: On your RSVP cards put a line for a requested song. This way you will know what your guests want to hear and they will get excited when their song comes on!

Gifts
Giving without wasting When it comes to wedding gifts you may have a specific idea of what would be most helpful as a gift from your guests, whether that be money towards a home, kitchen appliances or honeymoon assistance. Although it can be difficult if you have been living together and have most of the things you need for your home. Bear in mind too that everyone has a different idea of what is preferred when it comes to gifting, so the safest way to cover all bases is to consider offering all options. Set up a gift registry for your guests who would like to give you a physical gift.

Photographer &
Choosing the right photographer is right up there with choosing the right dress. Your wedding day will fly by so it is really important you have the good photos to help the memories last longer. First of all it is important to know that all photographers have a different style to their photography. Some are more traditional, and others like to be more artistic. The best way to establish what style you and your partner prefer is to click
through a few wedding blogs online. These blogs are a great tool as they feature multiple ‘real weddings’ of all sorts of styles and themes. Not only will this help you with inspiration for almost every aspect of your day, they feature photography from hundreds of different photographers which gives a massive variety of examples for your own photography choices. Do plan for a videographer in your budget, unfortunately
Videographer
they are not cheap, but are well worth it, and chances are you will regret it if you don’t! Your day passes so quickly and it can all be a bit of a blur. Having a video is a great way to see the things you missed, as well as keeping the memories alive well into the future. You will be able to see the tears and laughter on your beautiful day, and hear the sounds and emotional words that are spoken. Not everyone will be able to make it to your wedding,
especially if you have family and friends overseas. Having a video of your wedding means that you can share the memories with those loved ones and they can still feel a part and share in the experience with you despite not being there. It is also a beautiful way to capture memories of loved ones who may not be with us for much longer. For a more affordable option, look at a photographer who is also a videographer.

Legalities
To have and to hold from this day forward In New Zealand, there are strict legal requirements regarding marriage and civil unions that must be adhered to. The Department of Internal Affairs website, www.dia.govt.nz, has everything you need to know, as well as a list of all the marriage celebrants in New Zealand. If you choose to marry overseas, you must comply with the marriage laws of that country.
In New Zealand:
• Your Minister or Marriage Celebrant must be licenced to conduct marriages. • Your Marriage must be witnessed by two people. • You must be over 18, or have parental consent if aged 16 or 17. • A Marriage Licence must be obtained from the Department of Internal Affairs Births Deaths and Marriages Office. • As well as a Marriage Licence fee, you must complete a notice of intention to marry, including your full names and ages, all of your parents’ particulars, where the marriage will take place and the name of the Minister or Celebrant.
Meanwhile here are a few facts you may find interesting and sometimes surprising: • Your marriage can take place in a church, registry office, reception venue, garden, or private home, as well as on a beach, on a boat or at a park. • There is no limitation on what day you are married as long as the ceremony is conducted by a registered marriage celebrant or a minister of a church.

• Your marriage license is valid for just three months from the date on which it is issued. • There is no legal requirement that a ceremony before a marriage celebrant be open to the public. • Registry Office ceremonies are not open to the public. Something to think about before your marriage is whether you want a prenuptial agreement. This is a written agreement that lists assets that each party wants to retain in the event of separation. Prenuptial agreements are particularly
beneficial for parties wanting to protect significant assets they owned prior to their relationship or to provide financial security to children from a previous relationship. They are legally binding if they are in writing and signed by both parties once they have received independent legal advice.
