IgrewupattheHeadsonalifestyleblock andalwayslovedtheoutdoors.I’veworkedwith horsesformostofmylife,includingatashow jumpingstableswhenIwas14.Itriedaretailjob intown,butIknewIneededtoworkoutdoors,I wentstircrazy!OneoftheA&PCommittee,who livesinthearea,toldmeabouttheprogramme. Ithoughtthiswouldbeaperfectwayof incorporatingmylovefortheoutdoorsandwork withhorses.It’sbeengreatsofar.Weuse thehorsesforweeklymusteringandchecking stock.Ilovebeingoutonthehillsandmybosses boughtanextrahorse,Tom,justformetouse.

Havingtokeepmyselfon time,there’sno-one elseguidingyouand keepingyouontrack.You havetokeepfocusedand concentratewhenthere’salotgoing onaroundyou.I’velearnt tobethoroughandgobackandcheck everythingI’mdoinguntilI’mconfident Obviously,theothermaindifferenceisthat you’remostlyoutdoorsinsteadofbeingina classroom.I’mlovinglearningonthejob

Ihavethebestbossesever.Theytakethetime toteachandsupportme,IfeellikeIlandedon theperfectfarm.I’m35minutesfromtownand amlivingonmyownsoI’menjoyinglearning torunahouseholdandtakecareofmyself.My bossesdefinitelykeepaneyeoutformetoo; gettingmeatpackagesdroppedoffeverynow andthenhasbeenabigbonus!

Theelectricity supply industry will play avital roleinNew Zealand’sfuture, with exciting career options foryoung talent

At Northpower we arecommitted to building greatcareers forlocal youngpeople throughour trade andengineering cadetship programmes, both with pathways into full–time employment

Northpowerwas thrilled to welcome the next generationofLines andCablesand Northtec trade cadets to theNorthpower whanau on 17 of April. This groupofcadets were selected throughanonlineapplication process, then invited to attend an open daywhich included aspeed meet session with ourmanagers.Following theopenday, shortlistedcandidates were invitedtofaceto-faceinterviews.

From more than 95 applicants,14successful cadets startedtheir employment journey with ourNorthpowerwhanau. TheTradesCadets programme is an initialeight week work readinessprogramme whichincludes the NZ Certificate Level2 in ElectricitySupply alongwithNorthpowerworks site andwork practice familiarisation.

Theprogramme is beinghostedatthe Te PūkengaNorthteccampus. Thetrainingis provided by specialist training partnerLines andCablesLimited.Aculturalcompetency workshop,and anoho marae visitwillbe hosted by Te PūkengaNorthec laterinMay At the end of the eightweeks,the cadets will be work readyand will join theirteams on 19 June.

Theprogramme is thefirstofmanyplanned, with an aimoftraining 50 cadets in 2023 and100 next year.The Northtec campus will be providingclassrooms.

OurEngineering Cadets programmeis beingoffered in collaborationwithTe Pūkenga, offeringcadetsthe opportunity to complete residential studyalongside on the joblearningtoachieve their NZ Diplomain Engineering(Electrical)Level 6. This course will be commencing laterin2024.
