Waihi is New Zealand’s ‘Heart of Gold’, with a gold mining history spanning three centuries and a local open-pit mine that is still fully operational. Check out Martha Mine via the Pit Rim Walkway – beginning at the Cornish Pumphouse and rising gently to the edge of the open pit. The path continues around to the highest point on the north wall where the view is
simply breathtaking. Interpretative signs give interesting facts about Martha Mine as you complete the 4km loop back to the Pumphouse. For something more challenging try the Waitawheta Tramway Walk – an eight hour return trip along the old tramway through the spectacular cliffs and bluffs of the gorge. Overnight option available.
Rattle the drill, crank the handles, push the plunger and discover treasure at the new Gold Discovery Centre in Waihi. You’ll marvel at the intricate detail in the dynamic models then push the buttons to see what happens next. Open windows into the past and learn what it was like to grow up in a gold town, then turn the handle to discover the power of horses, steam and electricity. SNorKeLLING at tHe BaSe oF tHe MoUNt
Known affectionately as ‘The Mount’, Mount Maunganui is known for its golden sand beaches and coastal lifestyle. A key holiday destination for many New Zealanders and a popular destination port for cruise ships.
FAMILY FUN
Mauao (Mount Maunganui) is the physical focal point of the coastal Bay of Plenty and stands 232 metres above the Pacific – a sacred place that dominates the landscape of the Tauranga area. Walking up and around Mauao is a must-do activity!
taKe a StroLL
Mount Base Track: This is a great scenic walk around the base of the Mount. At 3.5km this walk is suitable for all levels of fitness. Watch out for marine life as the walk takes you from surf to harbour. Summit Walk: Climbing to the top of Mount Maunganui is a scenic feast. Featuring native bush, birds and views out to Matakana and Mayor Islands. Look out over the main Mount beach and the white sandy beaches of the coastline, which disappears into the distance towards Whakatane. At 3.8km uphill this walk is suited to a slightly more advanced level of fitness, but well worth the huff and puff for the reward at the top.
BeaUtIFUL BeacHeS The Little Big Markets are known for an eclectic mix of stalls and food trucks with various sumptuous delights on offer. Held the first Saturday of every month on the field by Zespri (corner of Matai and Maunganui Road). Find out more at www.littlebigevents.co.nz.
The beaches at Mount Maunganui are numerous and safe for swimmers and surfers. The top spot for swimming is the Main Beach, located at the foot of the Mount and facing the Pacific Ocean. On the sheltered harbour side of the Mount is Pilot Bay – a popular launching pad for boats and kayaks. It is also a shallow swimming spot ideal for families with young children.

A Head Start on Creativity for 2016
“T
he day my youngest child started school, I went back to school myself. I started at The Learning Connexion that day.” – Laura Scheper. Laura Scheper, fromGisborne, is no stranger to creativity. An already established art career made the decision to study art and creativity at The Learning Connexion a natural one. “Studying from home made learning accessible for me. There are NO regrets.” Taking a chance on the unexpected is nothing new to Laura.
She moved to Gisborne from Ohio, USA in 2008 without knowing anyone. In New Zealand, without her art supplies, she picked up what she had at hand – a camera, and she began to explore. Laura found that she could express herself creatively. Now her art has taken a direction far greater than Laura could have ever anticipated. “I saw this as an opportunity to expand my skills, techniques and perhaps range of media.” Her art has gone from strength to strength since starting the programme. She took black and white portraits of individuals around her community, then printed the large portraits until she had enough of them to cover a wall. This ongoing project has been
received with much excitement from the public. Her ‘Inside Out Tairawhiti’ exhibition celebrates creativity that is alive and flourishing in a remote and geographically isolated place. The results are quirky, bold and dramatic. Laura takes delight in coming on-site to Wellington for block classes and exhibitions. “I have the most excellent, awesome mentor! As an off-site student, that connection is whatreally makes the programme soar for me. To anyone thinking of enrolling I’d say ‘go for it! You’ll love it!” For more information please contact The Learning Connexion on 0800 278 769 or check out tlc.ac.nz - Larissa Mcmillan

volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid. The vivid hues of yellow and orange resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island make it a photographer’s dream.
Sitting 49km off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island, this is one of the world’s most accessible live volcanoes. With the majority of the volcano sitting beneath the sea it means you are able to disembark directly into the crater complex – no mountain climbing required.
Experienced guides will lead you on a two hour exploration of the inner crater, providing a fascinating commentary on the geology of the island as well as stories of attempts to mine sulphur. Along with volcanic and geothermal features, you will see the remains of the sulphur factory which have survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the 1930’s.
Being a live volcano there is little doubt that White Island is home to New Zealand’s most impressive geothermal activity. Visitors are able to get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot
