Hawke’s Bay & the East Coast
An outstanding lifestyle THE EAST COAST OFFERS AN EXCELLENT LIFESTYLE, QUITE UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE IN NEW ZEALAND, AND NOW THE TIME HAS COME TO SHARE OUR GOOD FORTUNE WITH THOSE SEEKING TO ESCAPE THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF CITY LIFE FOR A HOLIDAY OR EVEN A PERMANENT MOVE TO THE SUNNY EAST COAST. This publication presents you with a host of reasons to visit the East Coast that embraces Hawke’s Bay, Wairoa, Mahia and the Gisborne district. It’s our little piece of sunny paradise that is the first in the world to see the new day dawn. Here we literally have it all from an equable, Mediterranean climate that’s so important for our food and wine industry, to natural beauty that includes ranges, peaks, river valleys to vineyards and beautiful beaches. And with the mild climate come activities galore. There’s always something going on whatever the season. There’s vibrancy, yet none of the
stress associated with working in larger towns and cities. Weekends seem longer and more enjoyable as people get out and about either on foot, cycling or generally enjoying the outdoor life and plenty of sunshine. While the east coast offers a relaxed lifestyle there’s no shortage of schools, medical facilities, shops, dining experiences and a wide range of both commercial and residential real estate options. Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne are well-known food and wine destinations. The annual Art Deco celebrations centred on Napier and Hastings in midFebruary add a wonderful touch of festivity to summer.

Local gems Waipatiki Beach This is one of the best, sheltered and sandy beaches in Hawke’s Bay. The scenic drive through forest and farm land adds to the isolated ambience. It’s 51kms from Hastings on SH2. There’s a busy and popular camp site there too.
Watch the first sunrise in the world Marine Parade, Napier or Waitangi Regional Park offer great vantage points in which to view the first sunrise in the world.
Clive Square, Napier A beautifully tended garden in Napier at the lower end of Emerson and Dickens Streets comes complete with a harp shaped carillon in the square that plays every half hour during the middle of the day. Nga Pou O Heretaunga The Civic Square in Hastings is home to 18 pou, traditionally carved wooden posts that acknowledge the link between the people and the land. Each pou represents a tupuna (ancestor) and each faces the marae that contributed to the carving. The two groups came to an agreement and the timber was gifted to the project on behalf of Tuhoe, to Ngati Kahungunu.
Historic Oak Avenue Oak Avenue (Ormond Road) runs parallel to SH50A from Omahu Road, near Flaxmere, to join Evenden Road in Hastings. The historic oaks line the road for 1.4kms and formed part of the Karamu estate of John Ormond and were planted in the 1870s. There are over 200 oaks, elms, plane, lime, cedar and several redwood trees. It’s a beautiful avenue to admire by foot, bicycle or car in all four seasons.
Maraetotara Falls A beautiful spot that’s popular with locals as it offers swimming and walking opportunities. The falls are 20kms from Hastings between Havelock North and Waimarama Beach.

Exceptional dining
AWARD WINNING FINE DINING IS ANOTHER OF THE ATTRACTIONS IN THE BAY. Many of Hawke’s Bay’s notable restaurants are associated with vineyards and wineries, for example Mission Estate Winery in Taradale, Elephant Hill an innovative winery estate and restaurant located on the beautiful Te Awanga coast, Craggy Range and Black Barn Bistro in Havelock North. Produce is fresh, local and seasonal. There can be few experiences more delightful than dining outdoors on a summer’s day admiring the beautiful views while enjoying some of the finest food Hawke’s Bay has to offer. At Craggy Range in Havelock North the restaurant is called Terrôir – its name reflects that the food, the vineyard’s wine and its culture, come together sublimely, in a dramatic setting. With extensive views of Te Mata Peak the emphasis is on fresh, local produce and chef sources
much produce from the organic vegetable garden. Vidal Estate’s restaurant has been a popular destination for locals and visitors since the opening of its doors in central Hastings in 1979. Open for lunch and dinner, the atmosphere is one of relaxed sophistication. Excellent dining beyond the vines is available throughout the region at establishments such
as Pacifica, Bistronomy, Mint, Indigo and Mr D Dining, all in Napier, and Ten Twenty Four in Hastings. St George’s Restaurant and Mangapapa, both not far from Havelock North, offer fine dining with the emphasis on fresh, home grown produce. The newest fine dining establishment is Malo in Havelock North situated within Porters Boutique
Hotel which offers locally sourced, seasonal produce. Hawke’s Bay restaurants did extremely well this year in the Cuisine NZ Good Food Awards 2017. Restaurant of the Year was awarded to Pacifica in Napier, the Best Regional Restaurant to Bistronomy in Napier, and the Neighbourly Best New Regional Restaurant to Malo, Havelock North.

Life’s a beach
HAWKE’S BAY HAS MORE THAN ITS FAIR SHARE OF GREAT BEACHES RANGING FROM THE SANDY EXPANSE OF WAIMARAMA TO THE BEAUTY OF CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY BEACHES. Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and views to Bare Island (Motuokura) is undoubtedly the most popular beach in summer and huge crowds congregate at the beach for Waimarama Beach Day in January. Ocean Beach, a small community on the east coast, is a golden sand beach with many baches and holiday homes. It’s a fairly isolated spot with no shops but it does have surf patrols in summer. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers. Waipatiki Beach 20ks north of Napier is a small but beautiful sandy beach with camping facilities. Travel north on the road from Napier to Gisborne then take a beautiful 11k drive through a commercial forest, to the small coastal community. The beach is wonderfully sandy and there are also some good walks nearby. Closer to Napier is popular Westshore Beach which is patrolled by members of the Westshore Surf
Life Saving Club between Labour weekend and late March. Although only a short drive from Hastings the beachfront settlements of Haumoana and Te Awanga offer a relaxed lifestyle by the sea. Both are popular fishing and surfing destinations. Follow Clifton Road through Te Awanga and head towards Clifton. Here is the base for Gannet Beach Adventures - A tractor and trailer tour along the beach to the world’s largest most accessible mainland gannet colony. In Central Hawke’s Bay there are some magnificent, often deserted, beaches to enjoy: Kairakau Beach, Mangakuri with its sandy beach and rocky shore, Pourerere Beach where you can fish, swim, surf and launch boats from the beach. Aramoana Beach, Blackhead Beach with its Te Angiani Marine Reserve and Porangahau Beach, which has fishing events during summer are all popular destinations.
Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a vintage tractor to a bird colony? Come and join us on an incredible journey and see amazing geology as well as our local residents, the glorious gannets! Daily departures until the end of April. Check our website for further information and online bookings.
With the sound of the Pacific Ocean waves rolling in and the smell of the fresh sea air, you’re just meters from the beach at our quiet beachfront holiday park with spectacular day and night views. Aquatic activities WHATEVER THE SEASON THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDULGING IN A BIT OF WATER SPORT. White water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, wakeboarding, water skiing and surfing opportunities abound in the Bay. At Pandora Pond, part of Ahuriri Estuary, a large range of kayaks and other water sports equipment such as paddle boards are available to hire. Last year an inflatable water playground was installed which is a fantastic drawcard for kids. Clive (or Ngaruroro) River, home of the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club, attracts large numbers of water sports enthusiasts who enjoy activities including water and jet skiing. For surfing enthusiasts there’s a good selection of surfing spots such as Haumoana and Te Awanga, Ocean Beach, Waimarama, and further north Awatoto, City Reef not far from Napier, The Gap, Stingray Bay and Aropaonui. Splash Planet Theme Park in Hastings is an extremely popular destination offering both water and land based family activities. There are water rides, slides,
bumper boats, kayaks, facilities for toddlers and a ‘never ending’ river. Food is available or visitors can bring a picnic. Napier Aquatic Centre in Onekawa is Hawke’s Bay’s most comprehensive year round aquatic facility with indoor heated water slides, three indoor pools, an outdoor activity area, a spray park and two spas. Marine Parade in Napier is home of Ocean Spa which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It combines a number of outdoor pools, a sauna, steam room, fitness complex and a café. A visit in the evening is recommended for a memorable experience. Havelock North Village swimming pool complex has five open air pools, BBQ and picnic facilities. There are also pools at Clive, Flaxmere, Frimley, Waipukurau, Dannevirke and Wairoa. There are freshwater swimming spots with public access at Tutaekuri River, Ngaruroro, Esk, Tukituki and Waipawa rivers.

self-guided tours. Tours can range from a few hours to several days. Some can organise to pick up your purchases (often wine for those doing the wine trail) so that cycling is just that little bit easier! Napier’s Marine Parade and beachfront attractions have been added to in the last few years making it attractive for all walks of life, especially families. The Junior Bike Track is a safe, educational environment where children, particularly youngsters, can learn about road safety. There are working traffic lights and a roundabout and also a section for children aged three and under. The Napier Pump Track, also on Marine Parade, is the first of its kind in New Zealand and offers skate boarders and cyclists fantastic conditions to improve their skills.
A stroll in the park Parks There are plenty of parks throughout the Bay for those keen on exploring outdoors during their leisure time. Cornwall Park in Hastings is popular with families as is Anderson Park in Greenmeadows. In Napier the Botanical Gardens, Centennial Gardens, and the Sunken Gardens on Marine Parade are all well worth a visit. Trelinnoe Park just off the Napier-Taupo Road is 46kms from Napier and open every day. It’s a fine woodland garden and an internationally-recognised botanical collection- only one of three in New Zealand ranked as a garden of national significance.
Strolls In addition to enjoying the panoramic vista from Te Mata Peak there are five popular walking tracks in the park ranging in duration from 40 minutes to just over 2 hours. There are plenty of points of interest, some beautiful scenery and bird life to enjoy. Excellent information and interactive maps are available on the web site: http:// tematapark.co.nz/maps-and-tracks/
White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve is 30kms north of Napier on State Highway 2. There are two short walks (800m or 1.6kms) through bush which is mainly white pine. Visitors can view a stream and a waterfall. Boundary Stream walks are all easy walks and one incorporates access to Shine Falls, Hawke’s Bay’s largest waterfall. The area, just north of Tutira, offers opportunities to wander and appreciate a landscape where birds and pests are protected from predators. Full details and information about other options in Hawke’s Bay can be found at: http://www.doc.govt.nz Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera National Park is in Eastland, 40 minutes-drive from Wairoa, but extremely worthy of a mention as it offers a beautiful lake, an abundance of walks and the Lake Waikaremoana Track which is 46kms and can take 3-4 days to traverse. With rainforest, wetlands and the largest area of native forest in the North Island this is a pristine environment.

Grown with love ENJOY AN ABUNDANCE OF FRESH, SEASONAL PRODUCE. Throughout the Bay there are people dedicated to creating traditional, quality foodstuffs thanks to the excellent growing conditions for fruit, vegetables and produce in general. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market where shoppers can browse at their leisure, have a coffee, listen to live music, and talk to the growers of seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, mushrooms, preserves and wines. It’s a great place to meet, taste and buy artisan products all in one place. There’s a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere, perfect for tasting a huge range of foodstuffs including pickles, chutneys, olive oils, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The market is held every Sunday morning at the A&P Showgrounds off Kenilworth Road in Hastings. The Napier Urban Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday 9am - 1pm at Clive Square, Napier

which is at the end of Emerson Street. It’s smaller than the Hastings market but has a good selection of produce, coffee and a friendly vibe. Black Barn in Havelock North is the market to explore on Saturday mornings during summer. Shoppers can enjoy the shade of plane trees while selecting the freshest produce and all in a vineyard setting. For those who prefer to explore the region personally there’s a good choice of products such as figs which are grown locally, harvested and processed into a fabulous range of jams, chutneys and salami di fichi. Olive products are available at several outlets and there’s an excellent range of oils, drizzles, relishes and antipasto treats. There are several olive oil producers, many award winners, producing fine oil, including extra virgin. One such olive farm in Havelock North has a store on site and tastings are available. There’s a wide range of products such
as Roast Garlic Olive Oil, Thyme, Sage and Rosemary Olive Oil, along with condiments, hampers and sauces. Locally grown mushrooms can be bought at Te Mata Mushrooms and at many supermarkets. Also in Havelock North is Arataki Honey which sells an extensive range of honey and gifts. The interactive visitor centre is an opportunity for children to taste the honey, learn about bees, and to watch them in observation hives. Hohepa Farm, just outside Clive on the way to Napier, is a bio-dynamic farm which sells a range of delicious cheeses, organic produce and raw milk. The cheese is also available at the Farmer’s Market and several outlets throughout the district. Origin Earth produces fresh dairy products from cow and sheep milk produced on biologically farmed soils. The exciting range includes cheeses, yoghurt and chocolate milk. Bostock’s Organic Free Range Chickens are raised on an organic apple orchard. They are served at various restaurants,
can be bought at several local outlets and also online. Bostocks also have an organic ‘Kitchen’ in Flaxmere that’s open to the public- it was set up to provide the staff with healthy lunch options. Speciality food stores are plentiful and one that sells products from the Mediterranean, based in Ahuriri, is always a treat to browse. Havelock North is home to a store that sells a wide range of local and imported foodstuffs. Sample the delights of original handcrafted natural ice-creams at Rush Munro’s famous icecream garden in Heretaunga Street West. Generations have enjoyed this special place that’s a destination in itself. There are several other outlets selling real fruit ice creams. And let’s not forget the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available during summer from roadside stalls, the Farmers Market and orchard stores set up for summer. Blueberries, peaches, plums, nectarines, luscious cherries and sweetcorn by the bagful are but a few of the reasonably priced taste sensations.

Hawke’s Bay is wine country
DISCOVER THE ARRAY OF CLASSIC WINES GROWN IN THE BAY.
Not only is Hawke’s Bay a delight for gourmets it’s also home to some 70, or so, wineries and about 250 vineyards which makes it New Zealand’s second largest wine producer and the largest premium red wine producing region in the country. Just as the soil is suited to growing quality agricultural and horticultural produce so it has proved exceptionally well suited to vines: there are over 4,845 producing hectares. The Hawke’s Bay climate is maritime and similar to Bordeaux in France. After the establishment of the Mission Vineyard in 1851, shortly followed by nearby Church Road Winery, other growers were attracted to the area and now there’s a network of vineyards growing varieties that include Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The first vineyards were established not far from Hastings,
Havelock North and Napier, although now they extend northwest to the Dartmoor Valley, as far north as Gisborne, down through the Heretaunga Plains to Central Hawke’s Bay and west along the Ngaruroro River. Soils vary tremendously from clay loam, limestone to sands and free draining gravels and red metal, which lends itself to a tremendous variety of wine styles. Growing sites range from the coast to inland foothills, river valleys, and from sea level to substantial heights. It’s a region with even more potential for growing different varieties. The Urban Winery recently opened in the former National Tobacco Company building in Ahuriri, which is owned by Tony Bish. Inside is a stunning and unique barrel - a Taransaud Ovum. This French Oak egg shaped barrel is the only one in New Zealand, and one of only a few in the world.

Sunshine Brewery WE LOVE BREWING GOOD BEER.
That’s why we have survived for long enough to now be New Zealand’s longest established independent craft brewery. It all started in the late 80’s when two boys sitting ‘out back waiting for a wave’ got chatting about what they wanted to do in life. Brewing beer was top of the list. Since then a lot of surfing days were missed to share the love for Sunshine brews. Jump forward nearly 30 years - we have put the boards away for a while and built ourselves a new brewery to keep up with demand. Just happens it’s only 100 metres up from Waikanae Beach in case there is a sneaky wave. Our Gisborne range of beers is renowned for its drinkability. Gisborne Gold is one of the NZ craft beer industry’s iconic session lagers and heads our heritage range. Our ‘Sunrise Project’ range of beers is a new dawning in our story. They are brewed with the best of New Zealand, American
and European malts and hops, which is why they have won lots of medals, including golds - both here and in Australia. All our beers compliment Gisborne’s legendary long hot summers and easy times at the beach. Come & visit: • tours by appointment • beer sales • taproom and bar • tastings

Outstanding wedding locations HAWKE’S BAY HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL SELECTION OF WEDDING AND RECEPTION VENUES AND THE PERFECT CLIMATE FOR A SUMMER OR WINTER WEDDING. Vineyards and winery restaurants are extremely popular for weddings and receptions in Hawke’s Bay. Conveniently close to town wineries that offer indoor and outdoor options, beautiful natural surroundings, award winning wines and first rate cuisine. Popular venues include the Mission Estate Winery Restaurant, Black Barn Vineyards, The Old Church, Church Road Winery and Elephant Hill. For those looking for nostalgia and elegance the 150-year-old Oruawharo homestead in Central Hawke’s Bay oozes colonial charm. In fact there are several historic homesteads in the Bay that are perfect for weddings and special functions such as Ormlie Lodge on the outskirts of Taradale, Napier. Duart House, a historic home in Havelock North is also a popular venue. Wallingford is a 150- year-old homestead in Central Hawke’s Bay offering gardens and a church in which
to marry plus catering and accommodation. Hawke’s Bay also has a great selection of hotels, restaurants, lodges alongside art deco buildings, function centres, gardens, orchards, clubs, halls for hire and marquee hire facilities. Napier lends itself well to Art Deco style weddings as the architecture is perfect as a backdrop and there are plenty of classic vehicles that can be hired to suit the overall theme. Venues are often booked up well over a year in advance, especially during peak wedding season. The same is true for top photographers who will also be heavily booked up for the future. Factor in time for the photos to be taken especially if travelling to a spot away from the reception and don’t forget to have some activity and/or food for your guests while they are waiting for you. There are a good number of marriage celebrants throughout

the district for those choosing not to marry in a church. Alternative wedding venues include parks such as Cornwall Park in Hastings, Marine Parade Gardens in Napier and beaches. Permission must be sought from the local council to use reserves for weddings and functions. For those self-catering or organising the majority of the
ceremony and celebrations themselves there are tent/ marquee hire companies. You may need to factor in hire of wedding furniture, crockery, glassware, table linen and toilets, lighting, heating, flooring, tables, and chairs. There are local hire companies offering everything from vases to cutlery, chair covers, candelabras and more.

Gisborne Wine Centre Visitors to the Gisborne region looking for a wine adventure are confronted by an inconvenient truth, the region’s wineries are difficult to visit. It’s not that they are hiding, or that they won’t welcome an intrepid traveller with open arms, wine people are a very welcoming bunch. The reality is, they’re busy actually making wine. For decades, Gisborne grapes growers were largely focused on commercial contract work. The industrial wineries kept local producers busy and vast quantities of grapes were turned into anonymous mass market wine. As the big players have moved out of the region, those passionate and skilled grape growers have had to fend for themselves. Recently, this has seen a boom in micro scale wineries, taking high quality grapes from dispersed parcels of land and making small volumes of interesting, varied and great value wines. The problem is how to find these gems, who don’t have the scale for a winery cellar door or are tucked away miles from the city?
Enter the Gisborne Wine Centre. Opened in 2011 by the Gisborne Grape Growers Society and since taking into independent ownership. The concept is a specialist local wine outlet, offering a kickstart to your local wine experience. Because they are not owned or funded by any winery, The Gisborne Wine Centre is free to tell it like it is. Hand selected for quality and value, their range is a who’s who of East coast wine, presented by knowledgeable staff who can help you pick exactly what you’re looking for. With an on-site restaurant, Crawford Road Kitchen, overlooking the harbour, it is the perfect place to enjoy a bite to eat or a guided tasting before taking map in hand to tread the road less traveled.

Discover an endless summer and more in Taira¯whiti Gisborne! Take the first splash of summer fun in a region where the locals will tell you it’s an endless summer. From the land of the first light, kia ora, welcome. We invite you to discover our unique corner of Aotearoa – New Zealand. Taira¯whiti Gisborne is rich in history, culture, cuisine and adventure. Taira¯whiti means “the coast upon which the sun shines across the water”. Which is apt since we are the first in the world to see the sun. Also commonly called East Coast, Eastland, the Taira¯whiti region extends from east of O¯po¯tiki in the north to the Mohaka River in the south. What lies between is an almost untouched paradise of spectacular surf beaches, inland wilderness, fertile vineyards and farms, marae and settlements, gorgeous lakes and rivers. Taira¯whiti is a region of many firsts. In addition to welcoming the sun, Gisborne saw some of the first Ma¯ori to land after their epic Pacific navigations in the fourteenth century. Their many descendants now make up almost half of the region – an authentic expression of what it means to be a bicultural nation. It’s also where, in 1769, James Cook anchored his ship Endeavour and came ashore for the first meeting on land between Ma¯ori and Pa¯keha. The encounter will be commemorated
every October until 2019, when major events will mark the 250th year of this historic coming together of our peoples. The beginnings of our modern nation truly started here. And in keeping with those voyages, Taira¯whiti hosts the dawn of a new space age – with Rocket Lab basing its operations on the beautiful Mahia Peninsula. The jewel in O¯po¯tiki’s crown is the Motu Trails, heaven for cycle enthusiasts. Gisborne is a gateway to the Motu Trails, among the Great Rides of New Zealand. From dune and forest tracks, to vineyard tours and city trails, our region offers cycling suitable for every age and stage. Cyclists, tamper’s, hunters and fishers love exploring our hinterland all year round. Some lucky ones will enjoy pulling up a fresh cray for dinner, catching a trout in the Motu River or chartering a deep sea fishing boat. Travelling up the north side from O¯po¯tiki around State Highway 35, the East Cape hugs the coastline most of the way, passing beaches and coves that are starkly beautiful with their black, almost volcanic rocky inlets and native bush growing with wild abandon. When you reach the most eastern point of mainland New Zealand and start heading south towards Gisborne,
Reef Ecology Tour with Wild Stingrays Snorkel with Stingrays
Bookings essential as a tours are run on low tides the road takes you inland and the landscape transforms into lush, rolling high country farms. With the pounding surf of the Pacific on one side, and a rich history of settlements, inns and marae on the other, the journey around Taira¯whiti’s East Cape is one of the world’s great drives. Highlights are the impossibly long wharf at Tolaga Bay, the magnificent Tikitiki church, the carvings at Mt Hikurangi, catching the first sunrise at the East Cape Lighthouse, and a must do is stingray feeding at Tatapouri. Taira¯whiti Gisborne is one of the first wine regions in New Zealand and is recognised globally for its Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Chenin Blanc. Many of our world-class vineyards offer cellar doors to indulge your passion for wine and food. Our food and hospitality come from the same
source: from our land, to our people and then to you. We’re the surf capital too. We’ve got, arguably, New Zealand’s best breaks and can guarantee a choice of surf for every age and level of expertise. Our region boasts kilometres of world-class breaks, suitable for all ages. But adventure beckons from beyond the surf, making Taira¯whiti Gisborne an outdoor nirvana. Wairoa, “Long water”, is the gateway to the wilderness playgrounds of Te Urewera, the largest untouched native forest area remaining in the North Island, and also one of the Great Walks of New Zealand, Lake Waikaremoana. Summer in Taira¯whiti Gisborne is not to be missed. Visit www.tairawhitigisborne.co.nz where you can find a plethora of reasons to visit us – for business and for pleasure.
