WELCOME Message from Simon Collin, President and Sally Jackson, General Manager Hawke’s Bay A & P Society

T

ogether, we would like to extend a personal invitation for you to attend the 155th A & P Show to be held 17, 18, 19 October! Welcoming over 25,000 visitors through the gates, the Royal A & P Show, hosted at the Showgrounds Hawke’s BayTomoana by the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society, is a massive event that truly brings rural life to the city like no other event can. Some of the country’s best and most prestigious livestock and equestrian events will pack a three-day schedule and this will be accompanied by a huge amount of fun-filled family entertainment including the famous Mahons Carnival rides. The Royal A&P Show resonates with the community of Hawke’s Bay, and this year we will be honouring its traditions and the legacy of the agriculture and pastoral legends that created our amazing iconic event over 155 years ago. The focus for us this year will be placed back on the animals, the competitions, the prestige associated with winning the top prizes and displaying the best of the best livestock to the thousands who attend each day of the event. You will be able to see hundreds of horses, ponies, sheep, cattle, alpacas,

Some key attractions include a visit to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Natures Shed, the New Zealand Edible Garden area, hear from the famous Ruud Kleinpaste and

famous chef Ray McVinnie and see local food hero Henry Heke in action. A visit to the Sheep Pavilion with hundreds of sheep on display is a must do and viewing the equestrian World Cup event on Friday is essential – this is guaranteed to be a stunning event! Find out who will win the Affco Best of the Bay Beef Competition, see the fencers in action and enjoy the fine entertainment on show throughout out grounds. THE NATURE SHED:

Ko Tū koe, ko Rongo koe/ Farming with nature

N

ext door to the historic Exhibition Hall you will find what many people know as the Fish and Game Shed. Over the winter months this shed has undergone a stunning transformation and has been renamed asThe Nature Shed. When you visit The Show, you make sure you check out the absolutely beautiful mural which has been painted on the building by renowned artist Cinzah Merkens. Each year, this shed has a different theme and a team of dedicated people from the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, DOC and Fish and Game come together to educate and bring awareness to environmental issues facing our region. This year the theme of the Nature Shed is the biodiversity value of farmland and

integrating many partners working in the space. The display concept will create a model farmland highlighting ways to enhance biodiversity and productivity and highlight species who thrive on farmland given the right conditions and will promote practical actions people can take to support biodiversity. There will be plenty of activities particularly for kids including holding weta, seeing geckos, eels and koaro, triggering a trap, water quality testing and sifting through leaf litter. We will have plenty of information available for farmers, landowners, urbanites and kids and throughout the day on Friday you will get to meet the wonderful Ruud Kleinpaste who will be on site to surprise and delight.
