THE SEARCH FOR HAWKE’S BAY’S

Top Tasting Steak is On!

T

he top tasting steak will be announced at the Affco Best of the Bay Beef Competition on Friday at the New Zealand Royal A&P Show. Wayne File, Affco’s Regional Livestock Manager reported “finding the region’s most tender and tasty steak was a tough job he was willing to take on!” He stated, “The Supreme Winner of the Best of the Bay competition is a prestigious and highly sought-after title amongst Hawke’s Bay’s farmers and with a region blessed with a stunning climate, it is a perfect location for producing world class steak”. He added “The quality of beef coming out of Hawke’s Bay is absolutely fantastic and he was incredibly proud to spearhead a competition that highlights this excellence to the rest of the country”. The General Manager of the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society Sally Jackson stated that over the past two years the

competition has grown significantly with record numbers entering this year. The three-part judging process includes the animal being judged, first by a livestock buyer, then at the processing plant where factors such as weight, fat, meat colour and size of rib eye are considered, and then the top 10 go through to a taste test at the New Zealand Royal A&P Show. Wayne File noted that the competing steaks will be cooked in front of a live audience at the Show and presented to a panel of judges who will consider aroma, juiciness, tenderness and texture with a supreme winner announced on the day. Sally Jackson reported that the competition was an important flagship event for the Show and provided a brilliant opportunity to tell the pasture to plate story. She added “The New Zealand Royal A&P Show is a great platform for

education along with championing the primary sector and recognising farming excellence. This competition certainly ticks all the boxes and provides the urban community with a greater understanding of what it takes to get the best tasting steak onto the supermarket shelf”. Winners of the competition receive $1000, second $600 and third $400. Winners of each category, on hoof, on hook and tasting, will also receive a Weber BBQ donated byTurfreys Hawke’s Bay.

THE NATURE SHED: KO TŪ KOE, KO RONGO KOE/ FARMING WITH NATURE

N

ext door to the historic Exhibition Hall you will find what many people know as the Fish and Game Shed. Over the winter months this shed has undergone a stunning transformation and has been renamed asThe Nature Shed. When you visitThe Show, you make sure you check out the absolutely beautiful mural which has been painted on the building by renowned artist Cinzah Merkens. Each year, this shed has a different theme and a team of dedicated people from the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, DOC and Fish and Game come together to educate and bring awareness to environmental issues facing our region. This year the theme of the Nature Shed is the biodiversity value of farmland and integrating many partners working in the space. The display concept will create a model farmland highlighting ways to enhance biodiversity and productivity and

highlight species who thrive on farmland given the right conditions and will promote practical actions people can take to support biodiversity. There will be plenty of activities particularly for kids including holding weta, seeing geckos, eels and koaro,

triggering a trap, water quality testing and sifting through leaf litter. We will have plenty of information available for farmers, landowners, urbanites and kids and each day you will get to meet the wonderful Ruud Kleinpaste who will be on site to surprise and delight.
