Although only a short drive from Hastings the beachfront settlements of Haumoana and Te Awanga offer a relaxed lifestyle by the sea. Both are popular fishing and surfing destinations. Follow Clifton Road through Te Awanga and head towards Clifton. Here is the base for Gannett Beach Adventures - A tractor and trailer tour along the beach to the world’s largest most accessible mainland gannet colony. Ocean Beach, a small community on the east coast, is a golden sand beach with many bachs and holiday homes. It’s a fairly isolated spot with no shops but does have surf patrols in summer. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers. Further south is popular Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and

Which is apt since we are the first in the world to see the sun. Also commonly called East Coast, Eastland, the Taira-whiti region - extends from east of Opo tiki’s in the north to the Mohaka River in the south. What lies between is an almost untouched paradise of spectacular surf beaches, inland wilderness, fertile vineyards and farms, marae and settlements, gorgeous lakes and rivers. Taira-whiti is a region of many firsts. In addition to welcoming the sun, Gisborne saw some of the first Ma-ori to land after their epic Pacific navigations in the fourtteentth centtury. Theiir many descendants now make up almost half of the region – an authentic expression of what it means to be a bicultural nation. It’s also where, in 1769, James Cook anchored his ship Endeavour and came ashore for the first meeting on land between Ma-ori and Pa-keha. The encounter will be commemorated every October until 2019, when major events will mark the 250th year of this historic coming together of our peoples. H
awke’s Bay is home to some 70, or so, wineries and about 250 vineyards which makes it New Zealand’s second largest wine producer and the largest premium red wine producing region in the country. Just as the soil is suited to growing quality agricultural and horticultural produce so it has proved exceptionally well suited to vines: there are over 4,845 producing hectares. The Hawke’s Bay climate is maritime and similar to Bordeaux in France. After the establishment of the Mission Vineyard in 1851, shortly followed by nearby Church Road Winery, other growers were attracted to the area and now there’s a network of vineyards growing varieties that include Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The first vineyards were established not far from Hastings, Havelock North and Napier, although now they extend north-west to the Dartmoor Valley, as far north as Gisborne, down through the Heretaunga Plains to Central Hawke’s Bay and west along the Ngaruroro River. Askerne Estate Winery is located in Te Mata Mangateretere Road which is in the Havelock North wine growing district. It’s a relative newcomer, compared to say Mission, having been established in 1993. The cellar door is open daily during the summer and gourmet picnics are available to accompany your tastings. Hawke’s Bay also produces a large quantity of New Zealand’s apples so it’s no surprise that it is also becoming a centre of excellence for cider making.

ANNE ET VALENTIN - PICTURE Is modern, assertive, arty, and excessively chic. Its architectural thicknesses and its structuring square shape make it a remarkable, offbeat model. Emancipated and independent, to be seen in art galleries of course, in big cities always, and in circles where voluble eccentricity is not a phase, but a real state of mind.
