HAWKE’S BAY

H

awke’s Bay is often referred to as the Fruit Bowl of New Zealand, thanks to the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available over the summer months. Buy from roadside stalls, the Farmers Market and orchard stores especially set up for summer. Blueberries, peaches, plums, nectarines, luscious cherries and sweetcorn by the bagful are but a few of the reasonably priced taste sensations. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market, where shoppers can browse at their leisure, have a coffee, listen to live music, and talk to the stall holders. It’s a great place to meet, taste and buy artisan products all in one place. New stall holders pop up regularly. There’s a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere, perfect for tasting a huge range of foodstuffs including pickles, eggs, speciality milks, chutneys, olive oils, fresh fruit, vegetables and wine and cider. The market is held every y Sunday y morning g at the A&P Show grounds off Kenilworth Road in Hastings. The Napier Urban Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday 9am - 1pm at Clive Square, Napier which is at the end of Emerson Street. awke’s Bay produces a large quantity of apples so it’s no surprise that this is also a centre of excellence for cider making. Hot on cider’s heels are craft beers and ginger beers, with and without alcohol, that are being produced in ever increasing numbers. Paynters is the larg gest family y owned fruit company in New Zealand who farm more than 700 hectares. They’re probably best known for the ‘Yummy’ brand of fruit but they also make authentic craft cider using traditional cider apples like Broxwood Foxwhelp, Sidero and Slack Ma Girdle. Their ciders regularly win awards including The Alchemist which made the Top 30 in the New World Beer and Cider Awards 2019. The Zeffer Cider Co in Fernhill also has an interesting selection of ciders on offer including a Crisp Apple Cider and cult classic Apple Crumble Cider. You can fill your own flagon or enjoy a cider in the sun overlooking their orchard. Three Wise Birds is a relatively new company that also makes cider from apples grown in Hawke’s Bay. They operate a cider and garden bar in Hastings wh here pattrons can samplle a range off ciders and have a bite to eat with views across an orchard. There are several beer gardens where tasting trays are available, or sample some at selected cafés and restaurants. The Filter Room in Meeanee, for example, is the spot to enjoy Hawke’s Bay Brewing Company products: craft brews and ciders. Tasting trays are available and there’s a restaurant with indoor and alfresco dining and music at the weekends.

SAVOUR

Other spots to check out are the Napier Brewing Co, Napier’s only brew pub at each Inn, Brave Brewing in Westshore Be Hastings and Giant Brewing in Havelock North.

aho, GodsOwn Brewery, near Maraekaka is a fully licensed brew pub in a beautifful country setting where they grow their own hops. There’s a re-purposed 1973 cara avan bar and a safari dining tent. Beers can be

enjoyed, along with wood fired pizzas in the hop garden. Before taking off on an adventure check the opening days and hours as not all establishments are open seven days a week.
