Welcome to the New EIT Institute of Sport & Health

O

n behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust (HBCFCT) it gives me immense pleasure in welcoming you to the EIT Institute of Sport & Health – an incredible $15m facility that will undoubtedly play a significant role in helping us transform the lives of people in Hawke’s Bay and beyond. Driven by the overarching notion of ‘BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE’ – our vision behind this is bold and ambitious. First and foremost, we want to help Hawke’s Bay people live longer, healthier lives. Alongside this we are passionate about supporting local sporting talent. Hawke’s Bay has an abundance of emerging young athletes, and won’t it be a great thing to be able to grow future Olympians right here in our own wbackyard.

Sir Graeme Avery

The generous support we have received to date has made this all possible, and for that we are very grateful. Ultimately, this facility has been built by the people of Hawke’s Bay, for the people of Hawke’s Bay. It’s a communityowned asset that we hope will become a source of pride for our region and everyone in it.

There really will be something for everyone. We all have our own goals, our own challenges and our own level of ability when it comes to health, wellbeing and sport and we have been determined all the way through this project to establish an environment that can support everyone as individuals, on their journey to be the best they can be. From the outside it is easy to overlook the reality of what this facility will offer to the people of Hawke’s Bay. It isn’t until you walk through those doors and see for yourself, that you are able to comprehend the sheer size, substance and magic of what’s inside. When the doors open on Monday 8th July, it’s important to note that is just the start of the journey. There is a lot more to come, and I am confident the following pages in this publication will ignite a sense of inspiration in you that is simply infectious. Welcome to YOUR EIT Institute of Sport & Health. Let’s continue this journey together as a region.

Another significant milestone for EIT

W

hen EIT Sports lecturer, Marcus Agnew first floated the idea of a regionally based sports development facility, the School of Health and Sport Science immediately saw the opportunities. Now, a few years on, EIT is delighted to be celebrating a significant milestone in the development of community driven education and research in the field of sport and health in Hawke’s Bay.

When you head down to the EIT Institute of Sport & Health the excitement and buzz is palpable. Boosted by waves of fresh energy, new ideas are flourishing already. It might still need some finishing touches but the institute is very nearly up and running. Classrooms, a postgraduate study space and a research centre including a sports science lab with specialist equipment – it’s all ready to go. “We couldn’t be happier,” said Kirsten Westwood, Head of EIT’s School of Health & Sport Science. “It’s such an exciting and ground-breaking project for EIT and our region.” Together with her team Kirsten Westwood invested a lot of time and energy into the project. It’s fair to say that everyone is optimistic that the new facilities will make a huge impact.

EIT’s Deputy Chief Executive Mark Oldershaw stressed the institute’s strong points which backed EIT’s decision to invest in the new facilities. “The institute expands EIT by creating another stateof-the-art learning and teaching space. Here our students can learn how to run quality project-based sport and exercise programmes and conduct community centred research that will help improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Hawke’s Bay.” Mr Oldershaw believes that everyone in the region will benefit from this considerable body of expertise - from individuals and communities, to elite athletes, the collective goal is to support people to “be the best they can be” – a key message reflected in the Institute’s slogan. According to Kirsten Westwood the institute is set to feed the region’s sporting culture and develop into a hub for students, EIT staff and communities. It will open up opportunities to develop and run innovative community focussed initiatives. “In a nutshell, a place where students can connect with real-life situations under the guidance of expert lecturers and researchers.” Speaking of community engagement industry projects are already an essential part of the sport degree offering. This

is just one example of work that will expand in the new premises. The degree’s third year 150-hour practicum challenges students to get involved with sport, recreation and health organisations across Hawke’s Bay. The contribution to the community is a credit to the students and often leads to job offers. The new facilities also paved the way for the development of vibrant and industry relevant new EIT programmes, including the innovatively designed project based degree in Sport and Exercise Science - underpinned by industry relevant certificate and diploma pathway programmes. All of which will make good use of the state of the art facilities as well as the considerable expertise of the Institute staff. For example, starting in July, the new Certificate in Exercise (Level 4), will be delivered here, making the most out of spacious classrooms and modern gym equipment. This certificate opens the door to a career in personal training or running health and exercise programmes. EIT expertise also extends to providing specialist sport science services to the public. Whether it is about sport nutrition, exercise physiology tests or conditioning programmes, EIT experts are on hand and appointments available upon request.

A draw card of the new sport science lab is the 3D body scanner, unique to Hawke’s Bay and one of very few in the country. The cameras incorporated in the apparatus measure the body composition mass creating a 3D image of the body. A great motivator for people who want to lose weight, tone up, build muscle or for those engaged in a rehabilitation regime. Time investment? Just 40 seconds. Apart from EIT students, staff, athletes and communities benefitting from EIT ISH’s potential, researchers at EIT are particularly delighted to be able to extend their research outreach. EIT’s research capability and activity has grown substantially over the past few years and the new facilities will give it

fresh impetus. EIT is planning to bring in research staff, to be based at EIT ISH. Executive Dean for EIT, Professor Natalie Waran, is enthusiastic about adding a new chapter to EIT’s teaching and research portfolio. The new Institute offers first-class research facilities and opportunities that will allow us to further develop community-centred research activities at EIT, ensuring that we contribute to providing evidence-based solutions to help ensure the health and well-being of our communities “Essentially, our aim, through the work we do at EIT ISH is to enrich and develop our community as well as retain and attract research excellence in Hawke’s Bay.”

“Helping Hawke’s Bay People Live Longer, Healthier Lives” – a bold vision underpinning this landmark project ‘Be the best you can be’ – Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust Chairman, Sir Graeme Avery Having led the vision and the fundraising effort for the AUT Millennium Institute of Sport & Health (formerly Millennium Institute of Sport & Health), which opened in Auckland in 2002 – Sir Graeme Avery had the knowledge and the skillset to help deliver something spectacular here in Hawke’s Bay, and that he has done. After moving to Hawke’s Bay in 1999 and being involved in establishing the Hawke’s Bay Wine Country Tourism organisation and the Hawke’s Bay Food Group and Farmers’ Market, he quickly became a self-proclaimed regionalist. “The future of New Zealand calls for a greater focus on the regions,” says Sir Graeme Avery.

“It’s a perfect region to be promoting physical activity for healthier lifestyles, and to be developing raw sports talent.” After a lot of research and groundwork was completed, the vision for the EIT Institute of Sport & Health was born. “Like AUT Millennium – these facilities and services we now have at our disposal will support us in helping the local Hawke’s Bay community, of all ages, become the best they can be in their quests for personal health and wellbeing, or in pursuit of sports performance.” The personal efforts of Sir Graeme Avery have been second to none, over a sustained period from June 2016 – an effort he says was made easier by the support of his fellow Trustees, HBCFCT staff, and the services of fundraising advisor, Clive Pedley of Giving Architects.

“In Hawke’s Bay we need to be proactively addressing things like our poor health statistics, but at the same time looking to build on positive attributes such as identifying and nurturing the incredible sporting talent we have inside our region.”

“A project like this frankly is a hard slog, but the commitment to not letting the community down, and willingness of those around you - family included - to help on the crusade, gives you the fire in the belly to keep pushing along.”

Hawke’s Bay is a great environment, both geographically and climatically.

“I have said it once and I will continue to say it – this project is about much

10

EIT Institute of Sport & Health 2019

more than just the bricks and mortar, but rather about the wide-ranging suite of programmes and services it will enable.” Collaborative working groups of professionals trained and experienced in physical literacy, nutrition, healthy lifestyles education, primary healthcare and health promotion will lead the development of programmes – all of which are developed on a sound evidence base. “Special community programmes to promote healthy lifestyles will be offered to primary and intermediate schools, as well as health and fitness programmes to adults of all ages and abilities through the Royston Hospital Health and Fitness gym.”

‘The Legends’ – an established strength and balance focused class run by one of the Trust’s highly qualified strength and conditioning coaches, is one of the targeted community programmes the Trust will run from this new facility. The popular group training style class, which has been running from the temporary gym until now was recently accredited by ACC (Stronger for Longer lead agency in Hawke’s Bay) and Enliven Older People Services in recognition of their valuable contribution to the health and wellbeing of more mature members of the community. A research programme - BayPlay - is another example of a targeted community programme, which Sir Graeme says will run in selected Early Childhood Education Centres and Primary Schools to begin with. “This is an obesity reduction programme and aims to achieve a healthier weight for a longer healthier life – a major new initiative that has recently kicked off.” This programme involves collaboration of the Trust with the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, Health Hawke’s Bay, the Ministry of Education for Hawke’s Bay, and Tairawhiti, Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc and EIT who are the lead research organisation. “The list goes on – we really are striving to offer something for everyone in Hawke’s Bay, and we expect transformational change in people’s lives over the course of the next 10 years and beyond,” says Sir Graeme.

“We’ll have more resilient young children. We’ll see our first Olympian rise out of the Athlete Development programme - The EIT Institute of Sport & Health and its programmes will be world-class, and unrivalled in regional New Zealand.” ‘Reaching communities and inspiring change’ – HBCFCT Operations and Commercial Manager, Brendon Rope Once the doors open, the Trust’s crusade will only get bigger according to HBCFCT Operations and Commercial Manager, Brendon Rope.

& Health Clinic to bring those who have experienced ill-health back into more active and healthy lifestyles.” He says whilst the athletic development aspect is an excellent capability for Hawke’s Bay to have, the inspiration for him is hearing stories such as how a whole whanau is now eating better, getting sufficient sleep, getting out and being active together as a family because of what their son has learned through one of the Trust’s programmes. “In my eyes, these are the successes that will see our region transform.”

“The opportunity to use sport as a channel to activate positive health changes for the Hawke’s Bay population is why I am so driven to see this facility buzzing with people, come 8th July and beyond.” “As a Trust, we are already connected with so many community groups and delivering a range of programmes and activities across the region,” he says. “With the addition of the EIT Institute of Sport & Health – this will only continue to grow and evolve, and I feel privileged to be in a position to watch it all roll out.” For our young and impressionable members of the community, this centre creates the perfect opportunity to enjoy sport whilst also learning healthy behaviours that will set them up for a healthier life. “What I am also excited about is supporting our partners such as the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, and the practitioners in our dedicated Sport

Delivering Transformational Programmes for School Children

T

he Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust (HBCFCT) is passionate about supporting students, both primary and secondary school, to be the best they can be. Be it to help with establishing healthy active lifestyles, or to nurture sporting talent – all bases are covered.

Over the last three years, the Trust has made great progress in building partnerships with various schools across the region – working collaboratively to offer unique development opportunities. “There is a lot of pressure and expectation on teachers these days to be experts in all areas of human development, both physically and mentally, which is simply unrealistic,” says HBCFCT Sport & Development Manager, Marcus Agnew. “On top of this, we live in a society where modern technology is increasingly becoming a barrier to some children engaging in enough physical activity and sport. This has serious flow on impacts which we are seeing through the likes of the rising rates of depression and anxiety among young people.” With all of this said, it is vitally important to ensure opportunities are available to our all-important children, so we can ensure their overall wellbeing is being looked after, and pathways to sporting success are in place. The Trust has built a team of expert providers who specialise in physical and holistic athlete development, which is being delivered through the

various programmes on offer – all of which are underpinned by international best evidence. Whether it’s a mass participation approach, smaller groups of selected students showing talent in their chosen sports, or an individualised focus on long-term athlete development, the Trust has the capacity to deliver across the full spectrum. “By working together, a lot can be achieved. Aligning the physical development expertise of the Trust, to the educational know how within the school system, forms a powerful combination for our young people.” Each of the programmes on offer can be tailored to fit a school’s requirements, therefore enabling them to ensure consistency with their unique curriculum style and ethos. The Trust is already reaching across the length of Hawke’s Bay with the Sport & Life initiatives, and delivering across a range of social communities, school age years, and athletic abilities. “Woodford House for girls, Wairoa College and Primary School, Napier Girls and the Primary Schools in Flaxmere are just examples of the partnerships the Trust already has in place,” says Marcus.

The new EIT Institute of Sport & Health will prove a catalyst for significant expansion of the Trust’s programmes, which Marcus says is perfectly timed. “With the school programmes now tried and tested, and the enquiries growing by the day, the new space will increase our capacity, but also enable us to take our offerings to a new level. “A truly inspirational space – this facility will be a great environment for our young people to be immersed in. I am confident that their experiences here will fill them with big aspirations and goals that they can take back into their schools and communities.” With support from business partners and alignment with existing services, the Trust will continue to evolve its school programmes with the vision of reaching as many young people as possible. The Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust, with the addition of its new EIT Institute of Sport & Health stands to have a transformational impact on school children across all of Hawke’s Bay.

“From those just wanting to move better and control body weight, through to those playing international sport at the highest level, our programmes are already supporting young people regardless of the journey they are on.”

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) A mass-part rticipation t programme designed to off ffer f primary ry y school students an opport rtunity t to take part rtt in a unique and active learning experience, outside the classroom at the new world-class EIT Institute of Sport rtt & Health. The programme, which can be tailored to a school’s unique needs, aims to holistically promote children’s’ learning, physical activity, social relations, motivation and wellbeing and it does this through a range of physical activities and nutrition/life skills education. “I am hugely grateful for the relationship we have with the HBCFCT and the programme they have been delivering to ensure our rangatahi (youth) have the opportunity to reach their potential in sport & health. Touring the site during construction was a great experience and certainly one that opened my eyes to the gravity of this project and the driving vision behind it. I support the notion that this facility and the programmes running from it stand to have a significant impact on the children of Wairoa – and many others across the province of Hawke’s Bay.

Sport & Life Academy A tailored programme for groups of keen sports students who want to develop and prepare themselves for performance in sport. They may be a younger child beginning their long-term development journey, or a senior high school student after sport specific preparation for competition, or even just a dedicated individual wanting to improve themselves and showing confidence and the ability to lead. This is delivered to selected groups that attend consistent training sessions throughout the year, and available to all primary and secondary school students. - the Trust can support the school in selecting students. “We have been working with the team at the HBCFCT since 2016, with an overarching goal of developing leadership and participation in sport for our students. As a School we feel very fortunate to be part of such a great programme, and one that is delivering such strong results.

In terms of catering for performance sport in our region, as well as encouraging healthier lifestyles for future generations – this facility will be simply invaluable.”

With the opening of the new facility, the scope of value we stand to benefit from is huge. We very much look forw rward w to giving our students the opportunity to be part of a programme that motivates them to dream big and do their best – they will get so much out of being in an environment where the high-profile athletes train.

– Wairoa Primary School Principal, Richard Lambert.

This project is great for the whole region and one we support 100%.” - Wairoa College Principal - Jo Vennell.

Athlete Development The Trust’s Athlete Development Programme is the pinnacle, in which Schools who partner with them can register students showing the potential to reach national or international level in their chosen sport. On joining, they become part of a long-term tailored training environment which is aligned to High Performance Sport New Zealand. The programme aims to progress the overall physical development as well as mental and life skills of aspiring young athletes here in Hawke’s Bay. For any athlete striving to reach full potential the journey must start with the basics – general strength and athleticism. Once these building blocks are established – they can move onto the more complex athletic attributes such as speed and power. Iona School Student, Olivia Shannon is one of the recent success stories out of the Trust’s Athlete Development Programme 18-year-old Olivia came into the Secondary School Athlete Development Programme as a year 11 student over two years ago. Having been selected into the New Zealand Black Sticks team at the end of 2018, at only 17 years of age, and most recently being named as Hawke’s Bay Junior Sportsperson of the Year, she is an outstanding testament to the success stories we are seeing from this initiative. A naturally remarkable athlete, Olivia had the potential all along – but as a young 16-year-old joining the programme, she stood to benefit significantly from that introduction to strength and conditioning training – the equipment, the environment and the guidance. The contrast of training in a school level team verse a national representative team is like chalk and cheese. By immersing herself in an environment that reflected the level of ‘high performance’, Olivia was able to make that transition and realise an achievement much sooner than she ever expected. Training in the gym with the Trust’s coaches two mornings a week for the past two years has seen her develop specialised movement and strength ability that has, by her

own admission, helped her on her pathway to success. When it comes to their method of developing an athlete, the Trust takes a holistic approach and this includes teaching athletes general life and mental skills, which certainly plays an important role in any sport. “I first started participating in the Athlete Development Programme in Year 11, after the Sports Coordinator at School suggested I give it a go. “I am so grateful for everything the programme has done to prepare me for the Black Sticks. Because I have spent the last two years training in an environment that is similar to that of any high-performance sport, it definitely made the transition easier, and I am sure contributed to me reaching this achievement as early as I have. The Athlete Development Programme has helped me refine my performance, and also taught me the importance of things like strength and power in sport, and how to use those qualities to improve my game. As well as the physical side of things I have benefited from better resilience and commitment. To be part rtt of the programme I had to drive 15 minutes each way early in the morning to train, so it was a real test of how much I wanted to improve my game and aim for that next level. I got into really good habits and even on the days I maybe didn’t feel as motivated, I knew I was committed, and I would make sure I turned up. Commitment is a huge part rtt of any sport rting t success I have learnt. I would recommend the Athlete Development Programme to any Secondary School student who has big dreams in terms of sport. It is so cool to see so many young people there now. We might play different sports to each other but we are all working towards the same thing – achieving our sporting dreams!”

Regional and National Sporting Organisations Subscribing to Trust’s Athlete Development Programmes

A

s well as its partnerships with schools, the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust (HBCFCT) has also been delivering its Athlete Development Programmes to a range of local and national sporting organisations, with Hawke’s Bay Netball and Hawke’s Bay Rowing the first to come on board in late 2016. As part of a collaborative initiative, the Trust works alongside the team coaches to offer world-class strength and conditioning programmes that help ensure young athletes receive the wellrounded development they require to reach their full potential. Afterall, a large part of the Trust’s vision for the new facility is to grow more and more future Olympians inside the region. “We have some outstanding coaches in Hawke’s Bay and it’s great to be able to work with them and be of assistance

with our athlete development expertise,” says Sport & Health Development Manager, Marcus Agnew. “All of our partnerships have been forged off the back of the national Pathway to Podium programme for emerging talent, which the HBCFCT delivered in collaboration with High Performance NZ, Sport NZ and Sport Hawke’s Bay.” The Trust team has worked with their various sporting partners, to adapt and develop the programme to suit individual needs. The support from the national bodies such as NZ Hockey, Tennis NZ, NZ Rowing and more, as well as High Performance Sport NZ, has helped ensure the programmes are aligned to best practice. “For the sporting groups, collaborating with the Trust is an efficient way to have

their emerging athletes developed by expert providers,” says Marcus. “Rather than having to raise large amounts of funds to employ their own athlete development expert, the relationship they have with us means they get a lot more bang for a lot less buck.” With the opening of the new EIT Institute of Sport & Health, there will be more capacity for further sports to take advantage of the coaches and facilities. “The Institute will become a genuine sports hub, meaning a wide range of sporting codes can essentially collaborate to enable access to top class athlete development personnel.” He says sporting organisations often have to contend with a continual changeover of staff, which can mean disjointed programmes for the athletes.

“By partnering with the Trust, and making use of our athlete development programmes, this ensures consistency of programme development and delivery”.

As well as the athletes who have already tasted success, there are many others enjoying the programme, just to get the best out of themselves no matter what level they are at. “When they enter the gym there are no stars, no athlete is held up on a pedestal as gifted or talented – they don’t need that pressure, they are all equals, which is a positive and healthy thing.” Sporting Group Partnership testimonials/case studies • NZ Hockey High Performance Director, Paul MacKinnon “The assessment and development work the Trust has carried out with our identified hockey athletes has been highly valuable. It has helped in laying a solid athletic base for the players to develop from in preparation for the demands of the high-intensity international game.” • Tennis NZ High Performance Director, Simon Rea “We anticipate a new sense of growth from the leading tennis athletes in Hawke’s Bay as they become increasingly exposed to

world-class support in a specific, high quality environment” Hawke’s Bay Netball Operations Manager, Tina Arlidge “We are really starting to see significant improvements in our young athletes through this programme - this facility stands to have huge benefits for our sport, from a participation and a development perspective” Hawke’s Bay Rowing Coach, Jock MacKintosh “…the boys are fitter, and we can be confident they are entering the race in great physical shape.” Tennis Eastern Development Officer, Sean Davies “Both the players and parents have been thoroughly impressed with the professionalism of the Athlete Development Programme.” Central Districts Cricket Chief Executive, Pete de Wet “Central Districts has enjoyed significant support from the HBCFCT through the programmes our identified athletes engage in.” Rugby League Hawke’s Bay Chairman, Kevin Tamati “The talent is there, they just need the professional support, and we have

been very impressed by the Athlete Development Programme our young development academy has been involved in.” • Football Napier Marist, Committee Kevin Murphy “Football clubs often use standard gym offerings. We wanted our players to experience a higher level of physical and muscular training. A quality long term approach – a real point of difference the players have enjoyed”

O

n entering the EIT Institute of Sport & Health, you simply can’t miss the impressive PAK’nSAVE Hastings Indoor Sports Centre, complete with multi-sport courts, athletics training facilities and a stateof-the-art Sports Performance Gym.

Avery’s vision to create a hub that could benefit everyone in the Hawke’s Bay community and especially young children who will learn about healthy eating, cooking and being active.

PAK’nSAVE Hastings store owner operator, Brendon Smith is thrilled that such a large project - the first of its kind for Hawke’s Bay – has reached completion and is now set to have transformational impacts throughout the region.

“After our initial investment is completed, I would see this project as our main avenue to support the wider Hawke’s Bay community so that everyone can have access to excellent resources that’ll support their health, wellbeing and sporting goals.”

Brendon says the decision to support the project was largely based on Sir Graeme

Historically PAK’nSAVE has supported a huge array of clubs and schools, too many to mention, but they include rugby and hockey and individual sponsorship of the Hawke’s Bay Rescue Helicopter. “The far-reaching benefits of this project and associated facility is something we as a family are really excited about supporting.” A remarkable feature of the EIT Institute of Sport & Health There were many elements that needed to come together to ensure the full spectrum of the community was catered for at the new EIT Institute

Sustainability, functionality and the creation of longlasting investment value were core to the design. The insulated Sports Hall allows for year-round training at a moderate temperature and lowers the running cost of the facility. The Auckland based design and consultant team worked well with local contractor, MCL Construction Ltd (supported by many locally based subcontractors), ensuring information was provided in a timely manner. MCL Construction Ltd demonstrated a commitment to quality and professionalism and have been instrumental in the project’s success. Interesting Construction Facts This project had a positive impact on employment, requiring 225 trades jobs over the construction period of 14 months.

“There were certainly some unique design challenges presented, such as incorporating a pole vault facility, long jump and sports courts within one unified space. Another challenge was designing for future stages without compromising the current one, all within a tight budget,” said Project Architect, Tane Pratt.

Mauri stones laid to honour local iwi customs

A

s you approach the new EIT Institute of Sport & Health you won’t miss the eight mauri stones, set in the earth at the entrance to the region’s new sport and health facility. The larger central stone signifies the South Island of New Zealand, and the seven smaller ones, sourced from the Ngaruroro River represent the seven waka that brought the first Māori to Aotearoa. “Together the mauri stones and the manner in which they are laid, instill mana into the site, which is then embodied by the building, says Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust’s, Jarrod Wilkinson-Smith – Community Development Adviser. “Mauri is an energy which binds all things to the physical world and without it, mana cannot flow into a person or object.” “They are symbolic of the need to remain connected as a nation - that contest and achievement are natural allies,” explains local Kaumātua, Des Ratima. He says the arrangement is artistic, and the green background symbolises

the eternal connection to Papatuanuku (Earth mother). “Mauri stones are an ancient tikanga (protocol) that uses the kōhatu (cooking stones) to hold the mauri (life essence) of karakia (prayer) to uplift and protect the people, whenua (land) and kaupapa (subject/topic/reason) where it is placed.” Kōhatu are the result of much trial and turmoil as they are shaped by the mauri of the water. They arrive for use after their own refinement in preparation for a variety of uses by man such as cooking, heating, construction and the receptacle of karakia. Just as the kōhatu have the ability to hold heat or cold, they also have the ability to hold karakia. “The kōhatu will be a constant reminder of the karakia and mauri that accompanied their placement and provide a quiet confidence to all users of this facility that every consideration has been made to support their total commitment in the pursuit of being the best they can be.” He says these journey’s will involve trials and turmoils - shaping the mind and body along the way. “Their journey may take many directions and pathways that ultimately lead to

success. Similar to the journey of these mauri stones.” Heretaunga Ararau - of many pathwaysis part of the whakatauaki that identifies the values of Heretaunga: • Whakatauākl̄ Heretaunga Haukū nui • Heretaunga Ararau • Heretaunga Haaro o Te Kaahu • Heretaunga Takotoa noa • Heretaunga of life giving dew • Heretaunga of Arcadian pathways • Heretaunga, beauty of which can only be seen by the Hawk • Heretaunga that has been left to us the humble servants

The intention of these stones is to encourage people from around New Zealand to come and experience this new facility, and be a part of the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust Operations vision of improving health and wellbeing for all.

A remarkable fundraising effort by the Hawke’s Bay community thus far

A

rmed with simply a vision – but an incredible one at that, a bid to start rallying support for this significant project commenced less than three years ago, in 2016. As a brand-new charity with no existing donors or funders, and a target that quickly grew beyond $10m, passionate leadership and great engagement with the community has been key to the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust’s (HBCFCT) success thus far. To have raised nearly $15m in less than three years, and to already be achieving transformational health outcomes in Hawke’s Bay, is an incredible story of the generosity we are so lucky to have within our local community. The significant support we received early on, from Councils, grant makers, philanthropic families and businesses alike, has helped immensely in enabling the Trust to start turning its vision into a reality. This response, we believe, is a testament to the fact we live in a region where people genuinely want to see improvements in community health and sport development. The Trust’s vision, led by Sir Graeme Avery, was well received by the Hastings District Council in 2016 who provided two major grants. One of these came after wide public consultation, which demonstrated strong public approval for providing financial support for the project. This significant early backing was critical, and the HBCFCT is grateful for that strong leadership position in endorsing this project. There were several other early supporters,

whose bold commitment was critical in getting the fundraising effort off to a good start. PAK’nSAVE Hastings Owner and Operator, Brendon Smith and his family quickly recognised the potential to achieve better health and sport outcomes for school children throughout the region, and they have been stalwart supporters from very early on. Similarly, Rodney Green - a wellestablished local donor to many major projects - has been a strong champion of the vision driving this project and also committed major support early on. Royston Hospital was also prompt to get on board and support, as they could see their commitment to the health and wellbeing of the people of Hawke’s Bay was well aligned to the vision of the Trust. Confirming EIT as the naming partner of this project in 2018 was another breakthrough point in the fundraising campaign. From the outset, they were identified as an important partner, and key to the Trust being able to realise the full potential of this project, given their research and sport science capabilities. After extensive collaboration between both parties, the building was confirmed to be “The EIT Institute of Sport & Health”. From a fundraising perspective it was another major boost to raising the capital needed to complete Stage 1. Another great moment in this fundraising journey was receiving $100,000 from the Hastings Karamu Rotary Club Cocktail Party and Charity Auction in July 2018. The proceeds from this event provided the necessary

support to ensure school children from throughout the region could have the opportunity to participate in one or more of the physical literacy, sport, life and mental skills based programmes being delivered by the Trust. Funding from philanthropic Trust’s in the Hawke’s Bay region, as is the case throughout New Zealand, is constantly oversubscribed, so the support we have received here is greatly appreciated. Eastern and Central Community Trust is one of these funders, and their decision to provide very generous support for this project in 2017 was a major breakthrough. Similarly, the Royston Health Trust was another very major backer of this project and provided significant funding and support which would prove absolutely critical in being able to complete this first major stage of development. Their Trustees were truly supportive of the project and believed in the Trust’s vision. We have also received generous support from The Lion Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust, First Light Community Foundation, John Holt Trust, Frimley Foundation, Gwen Malden Trust and Pub Charity. Throughout the fundraising effort, the Trust has been humbled by the support of many local businesses and business owners, including some of whom would like to remain anonymous. In particular, the Trust was very grateful for the ardent support and generous contributions from Furnware, Tumu Timber, Colliers Tremains and Sileni. Some private giving by local business owners was also provided, and the Trust looks forward to formally recognising all of these donors publicly when the new building is open. The journey is not yet over The opening of the first stage of development at the EIT Institute of Sport & Health will herald the beginning of an array of people from throughout Hawke’s Bay having access to incredible facilities, across the spectrums of health, wellbeing and sport. It will also enable the HBCFCT to deliver leading programmes across a wide range of targeted community

26

EIT Institute of Sport & Health 2019

groups, in a bid to help people on their individual journey’s to be the best they can be. Despite all of this, on opening the EIT Institute of Sport & Health will only be operating at 50% of its full potential! To realise its full vision, the HBCFCT is asking many others to join these supporters and to help us raise a further $7.5m. This will ensure the full plans for Stage 1, including the construction of the Rodney Green Hostel and new wings at each end of the main building, are achieved at the earliest opportunity. Delays will cost us all, and risks seeing another generation facing very poor health outcomes and worsening the obesity epidemic we have. Improving the health of Hawke’s Bay people is vital. Additionally, we need to ensure we provide a full array of excellent training facilities for talented young athletes throughout the region - from any sporting code - so that they can reach their full potential earlier.

With initial tenancy at full capacity, existing training facilities and resources stretched, and more demand for programmes in schools than can be delivered, the need to press ahead urgently with the remaining work is urgent. The HBCFCT is aiming to raise all the additional funds required well before the end of this year so that plans for further construction and development can be finalised. While the Trust continues to present its case effectively to Government for the future development of the Stage 2 Aquatic Centre, it’s up to our local community to rally together and respond generously to a bold plan for completion of the Stage 1 facilities. Overall, the cost of Stage 1 in total is close to $28m. This includes: Main Building + Project Costs $15.0 m Accommodation Hostel + Ancillary Works $ 4.0 m Extension Wings $ 9.0 m Total $28.0 m

Construction of The Rodney Green Hostel to Commence ASAP Another key part of the Institute is an accommodation hostel, which will host school groups, sports teams and individuals participating in programmes at the facility. Making this possible is owner of the Bluewater Hotel in Napier and entrepreneur, Rodney Green – a long-time supporter of youth and sport in Hawke’s Bay. The new hostel will be called the Rodney Green Hostel, and it’ll be a significantly valuable addition to the EIT Institute of Sport & Health. “I have supported several other initiatives over the years and I just love giving back to the people of Hawke’s Bay who have supported my businesses during my career,” Mr Green said. He said he is excited about the new Institute because it would be a major motivator for health and fitness, particularly among the children of the region. “I am certain we will see the benefits very quickly. It is not just a fitness and healthy eating thing, it is a mental benefits thing as well.” Sir Graeme Avery says the accommodation hostel is a critical feature in the overall vision. “It will play a key role in transformational and intergenerational change for the whole region, and the Trust is immensely grateful to Rodney Green for making it possible.”

So far, the fundraising in Hawke’s Bay has raised $13m. There are currently several further major funding applications, requests for funding and approaches for major support being made by the HBCFCT. Even with this, a further $5m will need to be raised from generous supporters in the region. There are still a number of exciting spaces in the main building available for naming rights support – opportunities that come with favourable exposure and other benefits. We will get there The HBCFCT Trustees, led by Sir Graeme Avery and supported by a growing team of capable staff are working hard towards ensuring that this remarkable facility will benefit the most people possible in our region following the opening of the main building. The completion of these additional developments at the earliest opportunity will save costs, increase operational revenue and most importantly, positively impact many more lives throughout the Hawke’s Bay region. It will enhance and enable, through the generous support of donors, sponsors and funders, an intergenerational change in community health and wellbeing as well as sporting excellence. All the early results and indicators increase our certainty and resolve. As more and more key stakeholders have the opportunity to tour through the facility as well as meet the Trustees and staff, the common response is that it is so much more significant than what they had anticipated or imagined. They can see it will be truly transformational. HBCFCT welcomes the opportunity to host anyone interested learning more about the facility as they consider joining a host of generous supporters. It is clear we have a shared vision with many people and organisations in the Hawke’s Bay to improve health outcomes and provide support to local sporting talent. Please consider how you might join others in generously supporting this project. Let’s do this together!
