WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL HAWKE’S BAY FORESTRY AWARDS

I

t is with much admiration that we have been able to celebrate the heroes of our industry at this event and recognise them in front of their peers.

As an incorporated society the Hawke’s Bay Forestry Group operates as a not for profit organisation with one full time CE, myself Keith Dolman. We work closely with a family of organisations known as Wood Councils and have been functioning for four years. Our membership comprises of eleven companies with commercial scale forest management responsibility in the region, includes the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council (also a significant forest owner). We are here to enhance the role of commercial forestry and processing in Hawke’s Bay and we spend much of our time watching and listening to not only our industry but what is going on across the region. The Group provides a forum for forest managers to come together on issues of common interest and allows us to establish a collective response to concerns within and outside our sector.

More particularly we are concerned to identify and deal with our challenges and to improve practice. Foster dialogue, understanding and collaboration with Councils and communities and work to

encourage more people to work in forestry. We aim to improve forestry’s environmental performance and importantly let people know about forestry’s contribution to the Bay. A simple synopsis of just how we contribute to the community which is sometimes forgotten, is something I am reminded each time I get up early to go fishing and stop at Bay Expresso in Bay View. I am most certainly not the first person there, as dawn breaks the place is humming with the sort of people I most admire, those people that get up early every day, who work hard and do well by their whanau and who generate wealth that makes everything possible. Many of these people are forestry associated but can you imagine if nobody stopped for coffee, the café would close and that is just the beginning of the effect. Yet this is an industry so often reported in less positive terms and seldom do we hear good things going on out there. The Hawkes Bay Forestry Group know that this is unfair and unhelpful so deciding to do something about it has culminated in what this awards programme is all about. So, I am pleased to be able to celebrate our heroes with you all now. Keith Dolman, CE – Hawke’s Bay Forestry Group

INSPIRATIONAL ENTRIES CHALLENGE JUDGES

T

here was plenty to celebrate at the inaugural Hawke’s Bay Forestry Awards, according to chief judge James Powrie. He said he and fellow judges Ed Saathof (Forestry Services Limited), Bob Pocknall (a registered forester with the New Zealand Institute of Forestry) and Fiona Ewing (National Director of the Forest Industry Safety Council) were in awe of the talent and professionalism that shone through in the entries across the 15 categories.

“Many categories were hard choices with very strong runners-up,” said James from Redaxe Forestry Intelligence. “It was a real credit to everyone.” We wish you all could read and hear what the judges have (on the entries). It was inspiring indeed.”

There had been common threads from many entrants including responsibility, initiative, dependability, boldness and integrity. “Encouragement is a big one for this year – it is like rocket fuel in a crew or team.” Many entrants had shone in multiple areas, as had contractors and companies. James tipped his hat to the Hawke’s Bay Forestry Group and chief executive Keith Dolman and chair Matt Croft for having the vision to bring the awards to fruition. “They talked about these awards five years ago and now here we are,” said James. “A lot of levers have been pulled to get here.” It was a true celebration of a very special Hawke’s Bay industry.

WELL-RESPECTED AND TRUSTED WOMAN TAKES TOP AWARD

K

ere Elliot has spent a lifetime in forestry. As a teen she helped her dad pruning and planting and has worked her way to the top, being crowned the Skilled Professional of the Year at the 2019 Hawke’s Bay Forestry Awards.

En route to the top award, Kere also won the Woman in Forestry Excellence (sponsored by McFall Fuel). Those who have worked alongside her are full of praise for her vigilance, intuition, care and ability to relate to others, making her so effective in all she is involved with.

Twenty years ago she was approached by Industry Training Works to be an assessor and has never looked back. She’s keen to share that knowledge with those who also want to make a difference to one of the nation’s cornerstone industries. “Being a trainer is not as physically demanding as working in the bush and it is hugely rewarding. As an industry, forestry can be tough, and some areas don’t suit women, but there are other roles where they excel and bring a real eye to detail. They’re also not as hard on the machines as the guys are.”

She holds forestry up as a stellar career. “It is a highly-skilled job and these guys are supertalented professionals,” she says. Worker certification remains a good benchmark for tree fallers and was a good way to ensure everyone stayed at the top of their game while identifying any problem areas. “Hawke’s Bay tree fallers are some of the best in New Zealand.” Kere’s continued push for contractor certification makes her an important asset to Hawke’s Bay’s forestry industry.

There was no doubt her commitment to the industry, development of her colleagues skills and unwavering resolve to improve safety standards has saved lives. From a young age the importance of a strong work ethic was drummed into Kere, and it’s something she has carried through – from her days of helping friends of the family as a youngster, through silviculture, felling, planting, machinery and now as a trainer and assessor. She and husband Grant own Elliot Logging, a company that contracts to Pan Pac. Fittingly the two met while working in the bush. Their daughter Joela has also followed them into the industry but works on another crew. Kere drew early inspiration from her dad but also Alan Bockman, another old bushman who ran his own logging business with all five of his children working in the industry. “His ability, mannerism and knowledge of the bush was incredible,” she said. “He was a real perfectionist.” She hails from Ngati Porou and Te Aitanga-aHauiti country, also spending time in Taupo and Hawke’s Bay. As a feller for 10 years, Kere says she did get plenty of funny looks. “They are like ‘what the hell do you know?’ but things change once they see you on the tools. Once you have credibility it is a whole different story,” she said. “You get that respect and you all work alongside each other as colleagues.” With 34 years in the industry, she has seen huge changes, and particularly in machinery technology but she quickly backs that up by saying there will always be a place for log makers and manual tree fallers.

With 25 years experience in the industry, the Forest Management Team offer services in: • Woodlot and shelterbelt harvesting • Timber sales to domestic and export markets • Forest establishment of harvested and greenfield sites • Forest valuation • Emission Trading Scheme advice and management • Trainer/Assessor in NZQA forestry related units Our highly experienced teams aim to ensure value optimisation in all aspects of forest management.

FORESTRY AS ASSET TO THE REGION “Forestry is not an easy profession to be a part of and your specialist skills, knowledge and dedication are an incredible asset to the industry”, commented Mayor Wise. Forestry plays a big part in the Hawke’s Bay region, with an area of over 133,000 hectares planted. There are a significant number of logging trucks on the roads both north and south. Each day driving past the wharf one can see stacks of logs piled high waiting to be exported, to understand what a huge economic contribution it is to the local economy. I congratulate and acknowledge the Hawke’s Bay Forestry Group for their initiative and energy to get these awards up and running for the region. Council is very supportive of any industry that provides skilled jobs for our people, and forestry certainly does that. This year Napier City Council led and sponsored an initiative to run a series of workshops that examined the opportunities for technology in the “forest to port” log supply chain. This is the first time that the entire supply chain has got together in one room to look at how best to improve the flow from harvesting logs through to shipping offshore. Proud to have been part of this initiative, the Napier City Council look forward to watching it gain momentum and produce ongoing results in the coming years. “I am pleased that we have been able to be part of this inaugural event and ensure that we recognise that it is all about you – the backbone of this industry. Enjoy the celebrations and congratulations once again to everyone who has been nominated.” Tena Tatou, Tena Tatou, Tena Tatou, Katoa

ENSURING A SAFE, QUALIFIED AND CAPABLE WORKFORCE

A

28-year career culminated with heartfelt industry recognition for Trevor Sialemisa when he was awarded the Z Energysponsored special award certificate for his outstanding contribution to forestry.

Robert says harvesting supervisors and auditors really had to know their stuff if they were trying to find fault with Trev’s log making. “They often left the skid having been the ones to have learn something.”

“This is an industry that challenges me,” says Trevor. “I have had the pleasure of working with people who are amazing and because of that I have two families – my whanau at home and my whanau at work.”

Forestry as an industry has evolved hugely in recent decades and Trev was always the one to step up to learn more or gain qualifications. That hunger to learn and his easy going nature led him to becoming a trainer and assessor which the team at DG Glenn Logging say is a win-win for them and Trev.

He has more recently been a trainer and assessor but his passion for forestry was sparked when he went to work at DG Glenn Logging with his father Richard. Operations manager Robert Scurr remembers it well. “He was catching eel in the river and not long after that he finished his schooling and started work with DGL.” In the ensuing years he has worked at all sorts of tasks as he climbed the ladder. “It didn’t take long to realise that Trev was good at interpreting written information and even better at remembering it. This kind of led him along the career path of log making and then machine operating on the skid.”

He trains his co-workers and is very involved in developing and advising those responsible for the NZQA forestry framework. He is also a proud advocate in promoting both DG Glenn Logging as well as the industry through his work with training institutes, schools and regional career initiatives. “Trev is well respected by the forest companies who engage DGL services,” says Robert. Over the years, DG Glenn Logging has employed a number of the Sialemisa family, with Trev’s father Richard still a part of the team.

In presenting the award, judges of the forestry awards were able to elect when and what any special award could be assigned and they said they felt a real sense of respect from Trevor’s peers and that the industry continues to be greatly indebted to him for his efforts to ensure those who work in it are safe, capable and qualified.

WINNER LIVES AND BREATHES ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

A

man who is considered a huge asset to both his company and the wider industry has been honoured with an outstanding environmental management award at the inaugural Hawke’s Bay Forestry Awards. Mark Roper is an environmental forester for Forest Management New Zealand (FMNZ). It’s his job to ensure the National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry are followed to a tee . . . and that’s something he excels at. The qualified ecologist joined FMNZ in 2018. He was looking for an opportunity to develop a culture of innovation and excellence within environmental management and freshwater ecology but had very little experience in plantation forestry. It is a real challenge to find the right balance between harvesting and construction alongside practicalities and economic return for clients. The controls FMNZ have in place are testament to Mark’s drive, ability and passion. A key part of his role is to undertake continual revision of the company’s planning processes and operational documents, ensuring continued compliance while also incrementally improving the level of detail to reflect improvements in

techniques. Many of those improvements exceed the baseline environmental standards required by regulatory documentation. His peers say Mark is so valuable because he recognises the need to build-in responsiveness in planning documents to ensure they facilitate what is required to effectively manage forestry operations for appropriate environmental outcomes. Hand in hand with these site-specific harvest plans is the data collected by Mark and forest supervisors that encapsulates the natural character, flora and fauna of the area. Such attention to detail has led to the development of bat management plans, wetland restorations, retrofitting of structures to provide fish passage and the establishment of permanent riparian protection zones. Long term, Mark is committed to moving towards sustainably-designed forestry infrastructure networks, planned harvest methodologies and future commercially forested areas that ensure the protection and enhancement of the ecosystem services provided by FMNZ’s forest estate.

Mark truly embraces the New Zealand Forest Owners Association Environmental Code of Practice that aims to help FMNZ forest managers and contractors to plan, manage and carry out commercial forest operations in a way that avoids, remedies or mitigates adverse effects on the environment. The Outstanding Environmental Management Award was sponsored by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.

LEW PRINCE LOGGING LTD Lew Prince Logging wishes to

Prue Younger, Public Impressions, Hawke’s Bay Forestry Group and all those involved in the inaugural Hawke’s Bay Forestry Awards and their support of the forestry industry in the Hawke’s Bay region.
