Hawke’s Bay & the East Coast HAWKE’S BAY OFFERS AN EXCELLENT LIFESTYLE, AND WE’D LIKE TO SHARE OUR GOOD FORTUNE WITH THOSE SEEKING TO ESCAPE THE HUSTLE, BUSTLE OF CITY LIFE FOR A HOLIDAY OR PERMANENT MOVE TO THE BAY. This publication presents you with a host of reasons to visit Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast – our little piece of sunny paradise. The Bay literally does have it all from wthat’s so important for our food and wine industry, to natural beauty that includes ranges, peaks, river valleys to vineyards and beautiful beaches. And with the mild climate come activities galore. There’s always something going on in spring, summer, autumn and winter. There’s vibrancy, yet none of the stress associated with working in larger towns and cities.

Weekends seem longer and more enjoyable as people get out and about either on foot, cycling or generally enjoying the outdoor life. While the Bay offers a relaxed lifestyle there’s no shortage of schools, medical facilities, shops, dining experiences and a wide range of both commercial and residential real estate options. Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast is wellknown as a food and wine destination, a holiday destination and of course, the Napier Art Deco celebrations in midFebruary add an exciting touch of festivity.

Why Hawke’s Bay & the East Coast? • Great weather • Relaxed lifestyle • Reasonable real estate prices • Friendly people • Quick commute to work • Fewer people compared to Auckland and Wellington – only 3.4 percent of New Zealand's population • Family way of life • Extensive educational facilities • Fresh, locally grown produce • Fine dining • Nature’s playground sports galore

Real estate BUYING RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN HAWKE’S BAY IS STILL AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION FOR OUTSIDE BUYERS LOOKING FOR IMPROVED LIFESTYLES. Prices too are very reasonable compared with say Auckland or Wellington. In Hawke’s Bay the median house price is now $464,123 — up 17.4 per cent on the same time last year and 5.2 per cent up on the previous all-time high.* The average house price in Central Hawke’s Bay is now $285,000, in Hastings it’s $435,000, and in Napier it’s $507,000. Figures released by OneRoof recently indicate that 74.5 per cent of housing stock is valued at $600,000 or lower which contributes to the region acting as a magnet for first home buyers. Meanwhile the median price in Auckland increased by 1.8% year-on-year to $865,000, and the Wellington median was $592,500 which

does make Hawke’s Bay look very attractive, particularly to Aucklanders. Suburbs that are consistently popular include Havelock North, Mahora, Taradale, Greenmeadows and in Central Hawke’s Bay Waipukurau. Several families and couples of various ages who have made the move to Hawke’s Bay this year all have similar reasons for relocating such as the climate which is neither too hot nor too cold, quick commutes to work, relaxed lifestyles, plenty of walks and few traffic lights. In short the move has given them all an opportunity to enjoy life. *Source REINZ October statistics

A perfect lifestyle A MAJOR DRAWCARD FOR THOSE SEEKING A RURAL LIFESTYLE IS THE AVAILABILITY OF PROPERTIES THROUGHOUT HAWKE’S BAY. On offer is plenty of bare land and a good range of established homes ranging from character gems to contemporary homes. There are also several properties that come on the market offering both a lifestyle situation and the opportunity to lease out land- orchards and vineyards, for example. Once in a while there are opportunities to buy lifestyle businesses such as a cattery or kennels. Given the slower pace of life travel between say Central Hawke’s Bay and Hastings is a 40 minute journey making it comfortable to live the ‘good life’ and commute to work. Heading south towards Central Hawke’s Bay, Elsthorpe, Otane and Waipukurau all offer relaxed lifestyles. On the outskirts of Hastings look at Pakowhai, Maraekakaho,

6

Longlands, Poukawa and the Tuki Tuki Valley for similar opportunities. In Napier, Bayview and nearby Eskdale offer rural living in the hills and also by the coast. There are some fabulous views to be had from some hillside properties as they overlook orchards that are especially beautiful in spring. There are also plenty of properties

with panoramic views of the ocean. Further afield Puketitiri and Puketapu are all worth investigating. Crownthorpe, which is classic Hawke’s Bay hill country, is just 30 minutes away from Hastings and is accessible via the Taihape Road. There’s a selection of rural schools for primary students and generally good transport

Summer Guide Hawke’s Bay/East Coast 2018/2019

links including school buses for older students travelling to college. The move from town to country can be a particularly good experience for children who will learn how to care for animals, possibly have a pony and experience life in the outdoors. It is also the perfect excuse for mum and dad to buy a ride on lawn mower.

Cheers and beers DISCOVER THE ARRAY OF CLASSIC WINES AND ARTISAN BREWS GROWN AND PRODUCED IN THE BAY. Hawke’s Bay is also home to some 70, or so, wineries and about 250 vineyards which make it New Zealand’s second largest wine producer and the largest premium red wine producing region in the country. Just as the soil is suited to growing quality agricultural and horticultural produce so it has proved exceptionally well suited to vines: there are over 4,845 producing hectares. The Hawke’s Bay climate is maritime and similar to Bordeaux in France. After the establishment of the Mission Vineyard in 1851, shortly followed by nearby Church Road Winery, other growers were attracted to the area and now there’s a network of vineyards growing varieties that include Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay,

Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The first vineyards were established not far from Hastings, Havelock North and Napier, although now they extend north-west to the Dartmoor Valley, as far north as Gisborne, down through the Heretaunga Plains to Central Hawke’s Bay and west along the Ngaruroro River. Hawke’s Bay produces a large quantity of New Zealand’s apples so it’s no surprise that it is also becoming a centre of excellence for cider making. Hot on cider’s heels are craft beers and ginger beers, with and without alcohol, that are being produced in ever increasing numbers. Many businesses are of a boutique nature with products available at the

Farmers Market, the cellar door, selected watering holes and supermarkets. The distinction between craft beer and other beers basically is that they are manufactured by small scale breweries as

opposed to multinational corporations. There are several beer gardens where tasting trays are available, or sample some at selected cafés and restaurants.

Outstanding dining opportunities AWARD WINNING FINE DINING IS ANOTHER OF THE MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN THE BAY. Many of Hawke’s Bay’s notable restaurants are associated with vineyards and wineries, for example Mission Estate Winery in Taradale, Elephant Hill an innovative winery estate and restaurant located on the beautiful Te Awanga coast, Craggy Range and Black Barn Bistro in Havelock North. Another excellent restaurant, The Old Church in Meeanee, Napier is dedicated to weddings and functions these days. Its spaces offer a sense of grandeur with high ceilings and a magnificent chandelier. Church Road Winery caters for functions, weddings and conferences but also offers à la carte lunches with paired wine suggestions and the emphasis on Hawke’s Bay sourced artisan produce.

Produce is fresh, local and seasonal. There can be few experiences more delightful than dining outdoors on a summer’s day admiring the beautiful views while enjoying some of the finest food Hawke’s Bay has to offer. Craggy Range Restaurant in Havelock North has recently been refurbished and won two hats at the 2018 Cuisine Good Food Awards. Wine and food come together sublimely, in a dramatic setting. With extensive views of Te Mata Peak the emphasis is on fresh, local produce. Excellent dining beyond the vines is available throughout the region at establishments such as Pacifica, Bistronomy, Indigo and Mr D Dining, all in Napier. St George’s Restaurant and Mangapapa, both not far from Havelock

North, offer fine dining with the emphasis on fresh, home grown produce. Another fine dining establishment is Malo in Havelock North situated within Porters Boutique Hotel which offers locally sourced, seasonal

produce much from their own garden. Hawke’s Bay restaurants did well in the recent Cuisine Good Food Awards 2018 with Elephant Hill receiving the Yellow Brick Road Best Winery Restaurant Award.

Grown with love ENJOY AN ABUNDANCE OF FRESH, SEASONAL PRODUCE. Throughout the Bay there are people dedicated to creating traditional, quality foodstuffs thanks to the excellent growing conditions for fruit and vegetables. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market where shoppers can browse at their leisure, have a coffee, listen to live music, and talk to the growers of seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, mushrooms, preserves, wines and plants. It’s a great place to meet, taste and buy artisan products all in one place. The market is held every Sunday morning at the A&P Show grounds off Kenilworth Road in Hastings. The Napier Urban Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday 9am - 1pm at Clive Square, Napier which is at the end of

Emerson Street. It’s smaller than the Hastings market but has a good selection of produce, coffee and a friendly vibe. Te Awanga Organic Farmers Market is a new venture that runs on Wednesday from 4-7pm over summer until February 27 at the Te Awanga Domain. The focus is very much on Organic food. In January and February there will be yoga sessions, workshops and food demonstrations. Black Barn in Havelock North is the market to explore on Saturday mornings during summer. Shoppers can enjoy the shade of plane trees while selecting the freshest produce and all in a vineyard setting. Olive products are available at several outlets and there’s an excellent range of oils, drizzles, relishes and antipasto

treats. There are several olive oil producers, many award winners, producing fine oil, including extra virgin. Let’s not forget the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available during

summer from roadside stalls and orchard stores. Blueberries, peaches, plums, nectarines, luscious cherries and sweetcorn by the bagful are but a few of the reasonably priced taste sensations.

Deco style buildings in the Southern hemisphere. The Art Deco Trust, Napier’s preservation force, offers a variety of quality activities which educate, promote and

celebrate the history of Napier’s destruction and rebirth. The store is well worth a visit with quality retro toys, china, carpets, hats and an extensive range of gifts available.

Experience Art Deco THE UNDOUBTED HIGHLIGHT OF NAPIER’S CALENDAR IS THE ANNUAL NAPIER ART DECO FESTIVAL. Over 40,000 people from all over the world travel to Napier to experience a fantastic range of events, upwards of 250, many of which are free. In 2019 the festival runs from Wednesday 13 - Monday 17 February. Each year the number and range of events grows and include the Gatsby Picnic, the Depression Dinner, a parade of vintage cars, a soap box derby, old style balls and many, many more events. In 2019 there will be a focus on fashion and new events such as a dog parade, jazz breakfast and a beach banquet. Many events sell out quickly and it’s best to book online to avoid disappointment. Most people dress in Art Deco style and being in Napier during the festival is rather like attending a huge,

fun, open air party. It’s a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and revel in the unique atmosphere that is the Art Deco Festival. The history behind Napier being the Art Deco city is both sad and inspiring. Napier City and surrounding areas, including Hastings, suffered a devastating earthquake on 3 February 1931 which virtually destroyed the city. What wasn’t destroyed by the quake was later damaged by fire that raged through the city centre. Interestingly enough the iconic Norfolk Pines along Marine Parade, planted in 1890, survived the quake. Rebuilding was quick with many new buildings following the popular designs of the times. The result was the highest concentration of Art

The great outdoors THERE’S AN ABUNDANCE OF SPORTING AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE BAY.

Life’s a beach

Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and views to Bare Island is undoubtedly the most popular beach in summer and huge crowds congregate at the beach for Waimarama Beach Day in January. Close by is Ocean Beach, a small community on the east coast with a golden sand beach with many bachs and holiday homes. It’s a fairly isolated spot with no shops but it does have surf patrols in summer. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers. Waipatiki Beach 20ks north of Napier is a small but beautiful beach with camping facilities. The beach is wonderfully sandy and there are also some good walks nearby. Further down the coast in Central Hawke’s Bay there

are some magnificent, often deserted, beaches to enjoy: Kairakau Beach, Mangakuri, and Pourere Beach where you can fish, swim, surf and launch boats from the beach. Aramoana Beach, Blackhead Beach with its Te Angiani Marine Reserve and Porangahau Beach, which has fishing events during summer are all popular destinations.

Cycling

There are over 200kms of cycling trails in the Bay with many of them perfect for families. There are plenty of flat routes and several choices of route such as the wineries and landscape trails and the water ride. They are very will signposted, well maintained with refreshment stops often nearby. www.hawkesbaytrails.co.nz

There are numerous bike hire companies and guided or self-guided tours. Tours can range from a few hours to several days. Some can organise to pick up your purchases (often wine for those cycling the wine trail) so that cycling is just that little bit easier!

almost untouched paradise of spectacular surf beaches, inland wilderness, fertile vineyards and farms, marae and settlements, gorgeous lakes and rivers. Taira-whiti is a region of many firsts. In addition to welcoming the sun, Gisborne saw some of the first Ma-ori to land after their epic Pacific navigations in the fourteenth century. Their many descendants now make up almost half of the region – an authentic expression of what

it means to be a bicultural nation. It’s also where, in 1769, James Cook anchored his ship Endeavour and came ashore for the first meeting on land between Ma-ori and Pa-keha. The encounter will be commemorated every October until 2019, when major events will mark the 250th year of this historic coming together of our peoples. The beginnings of our modern nation truly started here. And in keeping with those voyages, Taira-whiti hosts the dawn of a new space

age – with Rocket Lab basing its operations on the beautiful Mahia Peninsula. The jewel in Opo-tiki’s crown is the Motu Trails, heaven for cycle enthusiasts. Gisborne is a gateway to the Motu Trails, among the Great Rides of New Zealand. From dune and forest tracks, to vineyard tours and city trails, our region offers cycling suitable for every age and stage. Cyclists, trampers, hunters and fishers love exploring our hinterland all year round. Some lucky ones will enjoy pulling up a fresh cray for dinner, catching a trout in the Motu River or chartering a deep sea fishing boat. Travelling up the north side from Opo-tiki around State Highway 35, the East Cape hugs the coastline most of the way, passing beaches and coves that are starkly beautiful with their black, almost volcanic rocky inlets and native bush growing with wild abandon. When you

reach the most eastern point of mainland New Zealand and start heading south towards Gisborne, the road takes you inland and the landscape transforms into lush, rolling high country farms. With the pounding surf of the Pacific on one side, and a rich history of settlements, inns and marae on the other, the journey around Taira-whiti’s East Cape is one of the world’s great drives. Highlights are the impossibly long wharf at Tolaga Bay, the magnificent Tikitiki church, the carvings at Mt Hikurangi, catching the first sunrise at the East Cape Lighthouse, and a must do is the stingray interaction at Dive Tatapouri. Taira-whiti Gisborne is one of the first wine regions in New Zealand and is recognised globally for its Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Chenin Blanc. Many of our world-class vineyards offer cellar doors to indulge your passion for wine and food. Our food and

hospitality come from the same source: from our land, to our people and then to you. We’re the surf capital too. We’ve got, arguably, New Zealand’s best breaks and can guarantee a choice of surf for every age and level of expertise. Our region boasts kilometres of world-class breaks, suitable for all ages. But adventure beckons from beyond the surf, making Taira-whiti Gisborne an outdoor nirvana. Wairoa, “Long water”, is the gateway to the wilderness playgrounds of Te Urewera, the largest untouched native forest area remaining in the North Island, and also one of the Great Walks of New Zealand, Lake Waikaremoana.
