WELCOME TO THE BNZ NATIONAL HORTICULTURE FIELD DAY New Zealand’s largest horticulture event.

The 2018 BNZ National Horticultural Field Day is proudly owned and event managed by the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society. Described as a true showcase of New Zealand’s horticulture industry, the event creates a genuine opportunity for industry networking, business to business interaction and education. General Manager of the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society, Sally Jackson reported “One of the best things about the field day event is that it is specifically created for the horticulture industry and there is no other event like it across the entire country”. Held at the historic and beautiful Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay Tomoana, the field day will have over 75 trade sites, the BNZ Seminar Series and the Ravensdown Innovation Environment Award will be presented over lunch. Lesley Wilson, President of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers Association stated that visitors

come from all over New Zealand to attend the event and the focus on the horticultural industry was key to its success. She added “the organisers are committed to keeping the 100% horticulture focus and growing the event in line with the industry’s demands and requirements”. Phil Teague, Senior Partner for Bank of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay has been involved with the event for a number of years assisting the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society with guidance and growth strategies. He stated “BNZ has been a long-term sponsor of the field day and this year we made the decision to move to overall naming sponsor. For us at BNZ, a key element of the field day is the educational features of the event including the BNZ seminar series. Speakers at BNZ seminar series this year include BNZ’s Chief Economist, Tony Alexander who will present to business leaders following a breakfast function. The BNZ seminar series runs throughout the

day and is an excellent forum to engage with industry participants, hear about and embrace the use of technology and innovative practices across our expanding and hugely important horticulture industry sector”. Activity highlights held throughout the day include interactive displays of new and innovative machinery coming to market, an exciting outdoor demonstration area with the latest horticultural machinery and technology, the New Zealand Apples & Pears Education Expo - creating future industry leaders and for the first time this year there will be 4 x 4 forklift training and competition hosted by ECR. Highlighted during the event will be innovation and over a lunch, the prestigious Ravensdown Innovation and Environment Award will be awarded. The 2018 BNZ National Horticulture Field Day is on Thursday 28 June and held at the Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay Tomoana. Download a ticket from our website www.nationalhort.co.nz

HAWKE’S BAY FRUITGROWERS’ ASSOCIATION Hawke’s Bay Young Fruitgrower of the Year Competition

The Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association, with the help of the HB Fruitgrowers’ Charitable Trust will be holding the 14th annual HB Young Fruitgrower of the Year competition. ‘This competition has grown in prestige and significance since its inception’, said President of the Association Lesley Wilson, ‘It is now the industry’s showcase for up and coming young Fruitgrowers and our future leaders.’ Eight competitors will compete in a range of practical and general growing competencies during the day. They will then compete in a speech competition held at the annual dinner the next evening. The winner of the overall competition will go on to compete in the National Young Grower of the Year after the Hawke’s Bay event.

‘It is a rigorous competition,’ said Wilson. ‘Our previous winners have all gone on to proudly represent Hawke’s Bay in the National competitions.’ For a little light relief, and audience interaction, the competitors compete in the Hortisports competition in the middle of the day. The competitors are asked to complete some ‘entertaining’ tasks which always provides a few laughs. The last section of the competition happens during a gala dinner event to be held Friday 29 June at the Napier Conference Centre. Contestants will deliver a speech expressing their views and ideas on a topical subject during the evening. Competition results are announced toward the end of the evening and awards presented to the winners. Dinner reservations have been sold out again this year.

TUG OF WAR CHALLENGE Horticulture industry teams have a change to vie for the historic Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association “Tug of War’ Trophy. The event, sponsored by Hurford Parker Insurance Brokers, is one of the highlights of the National Horticulture Field Days. Teams

of eight, which must include two females, give their all in this keenly fought event. There are prizes for the winning team, the runners up and also the best dressed team. The beautiful trophy was donated to the Association by the then

President, Ralph Paynter, back in 1936. To enter, contact Dianne Vesty at the HBFA Office.

The winner is chosen by the people; everyone who attends the field day gets a chance to vote. Alongside this is a silent auction where people have the opportunity to buy the artwork. A generous prize package sponsored by Gifford Devine provides $1000, $500 & $250

for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The first prize winner also receives a ticket to the HB Young Fruitgrower of the Year dinner. For more information go to the website www.hbfruitgrowers.co.nz

HBFA OUTDOOR ART COMPETITION Now in its 12th year, the Gifford Devine sponsored HBFA Art Competition always draws notable entries. The outdoor art idea is based on beautifying the entranceways, workplaces, and gardens of Hawke’s Bay orchards and to connect urban gardens with the Heretaunga Plains fruit production; this includes its people, produce and tools or any other aspects related to the fruit growing industry. One of the criteria is that, like a fruitgrower, the art work must be able to withstand any challenge presented to it by the weather. Any artist can enter and the works will be displayed outdoors at the National Horticulture Field Day.

After more than six years of work, the plan identifying how land and water in the Heretaunga Plains will be managed is nearing completion. The 30-plus members of the TANK Group are nearing the end of their role to deliver a draft Plan Change for the catchments known as TANK - the Tūtaekuri, Ahurir ī , Ngaruroro and Karamū waterways, and the substantial Heretaunga aquifer beneath all four. Just one meeting remains before the Group delivers and effectively ‘passes the baton’ of a draft TANK Plan to the Regional Council’s ‘Regional Planning Committee’ for its consideration, and subsequent adoption by Council. The TANK Plan is the next cab off the rank after the Tukituki Plan, which was operative in October 2015. Three things will happen after the TANK Group’s final meeting in July: 1. The 30+ members of the TANK Group will formally hand over a draft TANK Plan to the Regional Planning Committee 2. The Regional Council will arrange a two-day workshop and field trip between the TANK Group and Committee members to familiarise them with key components of the draft Plan to be accepted 3. Once the Committee has clarified any grey areas with the TANK Group, the TANK Plan will be recommended to Council for public notification as a proposed plan.

As you would expect, the representatives from tāngata whenua, industry and sectors, environmental groups, land users and staff from councils involved in the process over six years are now very familiar with what a ‘TANK Plan involves, but this currently means very little to most people – even though 85% of Hawke’s Bay people live and work on the Heretaunga Plains - in the cities and surrounds of Napier and Hastings. The TANK Plan will act as the formal rulebook all parties need to play to, to make sure the water resources of the Heretaunga aquifer and its inter-connected waterways are used sustainably, now and over time. The TANK Group’s work started back in 2012, by building a picture of the community’s values. From a discussion that has included primary production irrigation and industrial water use, being able to swim in and collect food from rivers and lakes, and developing new wetlands, the TANK Plan wraps these and other values of importance to the whole community into objectives, policies, rules, limits and good practice guidance. There is more information on the TANK Plan at hbrc.govt.nz, search: #TANK. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is a foundation sponsor of National Horticultural Field Day. The Regional Council works with the community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity.
