Embracing success In this publication we celebrate the achievements of our students who have been selected for their leadership ability, who have been recognized for their strengths and also their potential. The rate at which our world changes seems to increase with each passing day, it’s difficult to keep up, and with it expectations for our young people to achieve increase. Young people of today need to be resilient. They are expected to be high performers, withstand the many stresses of life and have a clear idea about their future whether they chose tertiary study or opt for a more skills based career path. Social media can unrealistically raise expectations and increase anxiety by presenting the image that all young people are beautiful, well liked, successful and are always having fun. However, in spite of the considerable pressures in contemporary life there are many examples of high achievers in our schools and colleges. School leaders, dux, prefects and head students are selected not just in academic streams but also for cultural, community, arts and service groups. They are achievers not afraid of hard work but they are also taking on the responsibility of leading their peers by example. Join us in reading about, and celebrating the success, of the Hawke’s Bay school leaders of 2018.

Hello all, I’d like to offer my congratulations to all of the student leaders in Hawke’s Bay. It’s inspiring to see so many of our young people embracing leadership across a wide range of areas.Whether it be in the arts, sport, academic pursuit or any other field, leadership is important. Not only do these young people have the opportunity to express themselves as emerging leaders and to stretch and grow, they take on the responsibility of guiding, and setting the bar for others.

Ihaka Tangaroa (Sports Captain), Mr M Hayes (Year 13 Dean)

Joey Field Head Boy

Joey attended Havelock North Primary and then Havelock North Intermediate. He followed in his brothers’ footsteps and started at Hastings Boys’ High School. He has achieved Excellence Endorsement at NCEA levels 1 and 2. This year he aims to achieve NCEA level 3 with Excellence Endorsement as well as passing a Scholarship paper.

Adam attended Lucknow Primary School for the first 6 years of his school life, moving onto Havelock North Intermediate for 2 years, until finally enrolling at Hastings Boys’ High School to start his 5 year journey through high school. This proved to be a good choice as he has achieved much on the sporting field and in the classroom.

After leaving school Joey plans to attend Waikato University and will continue working towards making the New Zealand Under 19 team for the 2020 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. Joey is a passionate cricketer and has represented the Central Districts cricket under 17 team and Mens’ A team, as well as the Hawke’s Bay representative team.

Adam has attained NCEA Level 1 Excellence Endorsement and level 2 Merit Endorsement respectively. He has also represented Hawke’s Bay in Hockey and has won regional oratory events, which led him to represent the school on the national stage for oratory.

As Head Boy I aim to encourage every boy to embrace who they are and where they’ve come from and also to strive for excellence in everything they do in order to reach their full potential.

Adam McMillan Deputy Head Boy

Adam is also the Student Representative on the Board of Trustees.

Ihaka started his schooling at Pakipaki School then moved to -ori o Nga -ti Kahungungu Ki Heretaunga. Te Kura Kaupapa Ma It was halfway through year 9 he finally moved to Hastings Boys’ High and began his journey.

John began his schooling at Ebbett Park and then moved to Peterhead School. He came to Hastings Boys’ High School in Year 9 to continue his life journey and to follow in the footsteps of many of his Polynesian brothers.

This proved to be a great choice for Ihaka which can be seen in the results he has achieved both in and out of class. Ihaka has achieved Merit Endorsement in both NCEA Levels 1 and 2.

He is very proud to have been made Cultural Captain for 2018 and hopes to inspire the young Polynesian and Ma-ori students to be the best they can be while still being themselves, and teaching them to be proud of their culture.

His goal as Sports Captain this year is to not only encourage students to participate in a sport but also to be respectful on and off the pitch to the opposition, referees and teachers.

Ihaka Tangaroa Sports Captain

With Adam’s position this year as Deputy Head Boy he is hoping to continue building a strong connection between the school’s different year levels in order to maintain the school’s brotherhood ideals.

On leaving school Ihaka hopes to join the NZ Navy as a diver, and to travel the world.

John Sali Cultural Captain

John is a keen and talented volleyball player, representing Hawke’s Bay in U15, U17 and U20 age group teams. He is in the New Zealand Development Squad, the New Zealand Island Team and is the Captain of the school’s senior A team. John hopes to study to become a teacher and will attend Victoria University of Wellington next year.

LEADERS 2018 READY TO INSPIRE It is my honour to be the Head Prefect of Lindisfarne College for 2018. My father and two older brothers both attended the College, and they share my pride in being the family’s first full College prefect.

YEAR 7&8 Henry Mirams

YEAR 7&8 Tom Scott

During my 5 years as a full boarder at Lindisfarne I have made many friends, both on the sports field playing for the 1st XV and in the classroom with my peers. I am also proud to be part of a college that has inspirational people: talented teachers, inspirational coaches, leadership mentors, compassionate boarding and support staff who genuinely care for the boys. Our prefect team are committed to continuing the good work of former prefects, both as good role models and as accessible leaders, whether it be during House events, tutor time, in the classroom, Chapel Services or simply sitting with the younger boys at mealtimes to get to know them better.

AIDAN Cole Grace

CUTHBERT Tom Charteris

Recently I spoke of courage, one of our 6 character traits, at our Pilgrimage Walk from Iona to Lindisfarne. I encouraged our new students to take a leap of faith and try something new, something that will take them out of their comfort zone – I know from experience that Lindisfarne offers a tremendous number of opportunities. I wish all the schools’ Prefect teams across Hawke’s Bay every success in their year ahead. Daniel Livingston Head Prefect

I really look forward to working with the rest of the student leadership team to develop programs and activities that will provide opportunities for all students at Wairoa College. The most important goal for myself as a role model, is to encourage and support students that they are capable of succeeding in anything they wish to pursue here at Wairoa College. I am truly honoured to be Head Girl of Wairoa College 2018.

The most meaningful goal I have set forward for myself as a leader is to be able to effectively bring ideas together from my fellow prefects and conduct them into positive and productive plans that benefit the school. I’m also hoping to be a positive role model that other students can look up to and respect through my own actions and achievements within school. I look forward to the upcoming year with my fellow prefects and truly believe we will have a good year together.

My goal for 2018 is to raise academic interest and respect for ‘ROCK’ values within the College by achieving my own academic excellence grades, and being a role model younger students can look up to.

My goal as a prefect of Wairoa College and Deputy Head Boy for 2018 is to lead by example participating to the fullest extent in all areas of school life and to also encourage younger students to excel culturally, academically and in the sporting arena. I hope to make the Wairoa community more inclusive in the extra-curricular activities and opportunities the college offers and to share and acknowledge the many successes of the students.

This year my focus within the school is to create an enjoyable, safe and resilient environment for students. I would also like to leave my mark at Wairoa College, which would further set standards for future leaders.

A goal I have set for myself this year is to increase the Patu House participation for all inter-house competitions by encouraging our senior students to interact with our juniors.

My goals for 2018 are to encourage more participation in Manu House by making things as easy and fun as possible. I would also like to boost academic results throughout the school by getting students engaged in events such as debates, quizzes, spelling bee’s and other interhouse challenges in the hope that these events will encourage them in class.

Cultural Portfolio

My goals for this year is to help increase the attendance of students in my house at school and in class; that will help increase the academic statistics of Wairoa College. I also want to help increase the participation levels in inter-house and school competitions and also in cultural aspect of the school.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL 2018 STUDENT LEADERS

We wish you a successful and rewarding year. It’s especially satisfying to see some of our ex and current students achieving these honours. Your challenge this year will be to meet the demands of your leadership roles, while ensuring you continue to achieve your academic goals. Talk to us about how extra tutoring can help with this.

SUPPORT FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS From our free assessment, we will establish goals and develop an intervention programme to fill any “gaps” we identify in your child’s learning, or set up opportunities to extend them to their full potential in Numeracy and Literacy.

SUPPORT FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS

Our experienced teachers focus on the NZ curriculum for NCEA, plus any catch up or extension work required to achieve better results at school.

Students are encouraged to bring in their HW so we can assist, as well as providing extra practice opportunities prior to assessments. We will reinforce what has been taught in the classroom, but sometimes a different voice can help. Having an qualified teacher sit down with you can make a real difference in understanding complex work; good teaching comes down to good relationships! We take students through to Y13 NCEA, for English, Maths and Science.

MATHEW HIHA (Nga-ti Kahungunu Te Arawa, Nga-i Tahu)

ki

Ahuriri,

Leadership is about always doing what is right and just and to set an example for the others in school. It is about showing them how to work independently, how to work as a group and how to show respect to themselves and to others. Leadership is about doing the jobs that are hard when others don’t want them, about showing tika, pono and aroha to everyone we meet. Most importantly it is about looking after your group and making sure they are healthy in mind, body and soul. UENUKU HOERARA (Head Boy - Nga-ti Porou, Nga-ti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Nga-puhi) In our eyes leadership can be seen as an embodiment of a variety of qualities which include honesty, integrity, resilience, empathy and pride. At Te Aute College we embrace all these qualities as many have before us. Te Aute College has contributed to the fabric of our nation with proud old boys such as Apirana Ngata,

Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and Te Rangihiroa who were all leaders in their respected areas and carried with them the qualities of a young Ma-ori man. TYRONE REEDY-CALLAGHAN (Deputy Head Boy - Nga-ti Porou) He aha te rangatiratanga? ERUERA PIRINI (Nga-ti Porou, Te Wha-nau a- Apanui, Nga-ti Tu-wharetoa) Leadership is a way to be mature and civilised and to be able to think on your feet and to help out the community. To describe a leader is best kept to how you represent yourself at school and out in the community. Leadership isn’t just leading from the front but also from the back.
