Congratulations to our young leaders Welcome to Leaders in their School, one of the most keenly anticipated publications in the Hawke’s Bay Today calendar. This magazine is published in conjunction with the schools, to celebrate the many achievements of their students who have been selected for their leadership ability, those recognized for their strengths and looking ahead to their future potential. The world is changing rapidly, almost every day there will be something new to contend with which makes it a challenge to keep up – especially with technology. Those changes present very different expectations for young people than in the past. They are expected to be high performers, withstand the usual stresses of life and have a clear idea about their future pathway, whether they chose tertiary study or opt for a more skills based career. What we do know is if young people have clear guidance, mentorship and are well supported from teachers, caregivers and family they will be resilient and keep their feet on the ground. Secondary school educators do an amazing job in spite of the considerable pressures in contemporary life and take this opportunity to share with the wider community high achievers in their schools and colleges. School leaders, dux, prefects and head students are selected not just in academic streams but also for cultural, community, arts and service groups. They are achievers not afraid of hard work and taking on the responsibility of leading their peers by example. Join us in reading about, and celebrating the success of, the Hawke’s Bay school leaders of 2019.

Leaders in their School 2019
Message from the Minister: Kia Ora, A belated welcome to the start of a new school year. While it may be a distant memory, I hope you had a great break and came back refreshed and ready for another year of learning and time with your school friends. The challenges and opportunities you face as students and young leaders are very different to those of generations past. When I was your age that’s what I was told too. It’s probably fair to say though that change comes much faster these days. The unbelievable power of computers, huge advances in automation and artificial intelligence, profound changes to the world of work and the wonders (and worries) of social media combine to create a dynamic future. But perhaps also a slightly daunting one. As the next generation of New Zealand’s leaders, you will one day hold our country’s future in your hands – be it in sport, arts, politics, business, science or any other area. I am confident you will fully embrace these challenges and drive New Zealand onto even greater things. My job as Minister of Education and that of other leaders in politics and in schools is to ensure our education system remains fit for purpose, so that schools can prepare you and equip you in a fast-changing world with the tools, knowledge and life skills you need to take the next steps to achieve your goals. Thankfully, we’re lucky to have the best teachers and school leaders in the world to make this happen. Again in 2019, the Hawkes’ Bay Leaders in their Schools publication demonstrates your region is in great heart. May this year be even better than the last. m regards, Warm Chriss Hipkins, Minister of Education.

Te Aute College established in 1854 is a state integrated, Ma-ori Anglican boarding school for young men located in Pukehou, Central Hawke’s Bay. The college moto Whakatangata kia kaha – Quit ye like men be strong is taken from the above opening passage, 1 Corinthians 16:13 in the bible. Te Aute College enrolls boarders and day students from Year 9 through to 13 and is a specialised school committed to producing the finest young men in Aotearoa, under the mantle and our special character status of kaupapa Ma-ori, tikanga Ma-ori and Christianity. Any young man who enters the portal of Te Aute College instantly becomes part of this legacy where the amorangi (leading mantra) is Ma-oritanga. Te Aute College is also a specialist school that is set upon the prestigious mantle and whenua (land) bequested by Nga-i Te Whatuia-piti, the local hapu-.

Doing the hard jobs that others don’t want to do. Leaders don’t just lead from the front, they lead from the back too.
Matariki Channings - Nga-i Tuhoe, Nga-ti Tuwharetoa
He kura whakanikoniko i a ma-tou kia tu- pakari ai ma-tou i nga- ra- kei mua. Kia tu- hei hoa ta-ne manaaki i tana hoa rangatira, kia whai ringa raupa-, kia noho hei pa-pa- atawhai i ana tamariki, otira- kia mau ki to-na mana Ma-ori, mana motuhake. E kiia ana te ko-rero “Whakatangata Kia Kaha”.
Brooklyn Williams - Nga-ti Awa, Nga-ti Rangitihi
Being a Te Aute boy, we live by the values of Tika,
Pono and Aroha. As leaders we show these values to the students to help them develop and grow into fine young men. Like our motto “Whakatangata Kia Kaha” translated into “Quit ye, like men, be strong”, we are to sow a seed within ourselves, nurture it during our time at Te Aute, then finally let it prosper, embodying us into Rangatira mo te-nei ra-.

To be from Te Aute means to embody what forms the fabric and culture of Te Autetanga – Pono, Tika and Aroha.
Rihari Peeti - Nga-ti Raukawa, Atihaunui-a-Pa-pa-rangi, Nga-ti Rauru, Raukawa
Tika, Pono and Aroha are our school values but to me the most important value is aroha. To me, Aroha means Respect. Respect for everything, for people around you and for yourself. Respect goes a long way and that is why I believe it is the most important value in our kura.

WAIROA COLLEGE 2019 LEADERS
YEAR 7 & 8 LEADERS Since 2016 we have partnered with Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust to provide sport and life development programmes for students of Wairoa College. The Trust is building the new EIT Institute of Sport and Health for Hawke’s Bay, and it is exciting to have a high-quality team of people connecting with our students. This term we have expanded the programme so that all Year 7 & 8’s have a chance to be part of the programme. A series of workshop days involving physical challenges have been delivered, importantly focussing on character and positive behaviours, which has been lapped up by the students and motivated them to do well in class too. The students are now looking forward to trips down to Hawke’s Bay, to work with the team at their training facility. Thanks to the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust for their support, we look forward to seeing the programme develop as we grow further opportunities for a range of students. LEADERSHIP At Wairoa College we believe that students should be given a wide range of opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills in preparation for life beyond school.
