Welcome from the Art Deco Trust Chair Michael Fowler

O

n behalf of the board of the Art Deco Trust – Welcome to the 2020 Napier Art Deco Festival! The Art Deco Trust mission is to “preserve, restore, celebrate and promote Napier’s Art Deco heritage”. This is our celebration! The Napier Art Deco Festival is a large annual undertaking for the Art Deco Trust to embark on and has grown significantly since the first one was held 32 years ago. However, the objective has remained the same of a “not too serious celebration of things Art Deco”. In other words whether you are “dressed up to the nines” or just curious about what goes on at the Napier Art Deco Festival – we want you to have a safe, good time! We couldn’t do it without the support of the Napier City Council, sponsors, grant funders, Art Deco Trust staff and volunteers – and you

the public who support us so well – thank you all. Locals can take for granted the magical setting that is Napier on the sea front. And during the festival it is a sight to behold with the Marine Parade transformed with a cast of thousands in a setting from the 1920s and 30s. This year we are excited to have Phil Crosby (grandson of the legendary Bing Crosby) appearing at the Art Deco Napier Municipal Theatre for his “the Golden Age of Hollywood” show – not to be missed. There are many free events put on during the Festival, so if you haven’t before – why not wander down to the Sound Shell and check it out? Wishing everybody a magical, safe, absolutely spiffing top hat and fun-filled Festival.

1920’s Deco Fashion – what to expect. From Lee-Anne at Charleston Chic

920’s called the Roaring Twenties and for a good reason. The party decade. Fashion was very important in this decade, people wanted to forget about the austerity of WW1. Dressing for the jubilant parties that happened weekly, called for designers to couture garments that sparkled and moved on the numerous dance floors and cocktail bars that sprung up everywhere. Throw off your corsets girls, learn the Charleston, Tango and Black Bottom dances, smoke your French cigarettes, wear makeup and bare your skin, rouge your knees because now they will be seen. No longer will they be hiding under

long heavy Victorian style skirts and dresses. Everything was minimised and shortened, including your hair, known as the bob style. The designer Chanel produced couture garments that would still be manufactured one hundred years on. Chanel introduced knitwear. Classic simple clothes that you could wear to work at the office, then pop off to play sport in. When you received your Country House invitation, you would need the perfect wardrobe of attire required for your outdoor activities. These could include a game of tennis, golf, hiking, skiing, motoring, hunting, fishing and equine pursuits all in your Country House weekend invitation. You would need an

evening frock as dressing for dinner was de riguer. It would be made of silk georgette, embellished with glass beading and silk fringing and a low waistline. The finished hemline was just below the knee and accessorised with very long pearls, small drop earrings a delicate ribbon bandeau around your perfect marcel wave bobbed haircut. Over your shoulders an ostrich boa of pastel tones matching your flapper frock. T- strap brocade shoes coordinated to your evening ensemble. No excuses for non-stop dancing now. Bertie’s Tips for 1920’s attire.

W

e’re all aware of the revolution that took place in women’s fashion in the 1920’s - short skirts, beads, headbands, cropped hair but what about the boys? Well more evolution than revolution. In the early years of the decade they stuck to the styles of their Edwardian fathers. Dark neutral coloured suits, narrow trousers without turn ups and short single breasted jackets, often fitted in the waist and waistcoats. Shirts were plain with separate stiff collars. Hats were worn at all times of the day. However they did catch up with the girls. By the middle of the decade it was much different. The suit was still the main focus of men’s fashion and “dapper” was the

catch word. But now trousers were wide with turn ups and the jackets were longer and double breasted. Out were the neutral tones and in were colours and stripes. Soft shirts with attached collars became fashionable. Hats were still worn with trilbys (fedoras) for the more affluent and caps (usually butcher boy style) for the working classes. Men had more leisure time now and sportswear became trendy even if you weren’t playing! Plus fours and jodhpurs, cravats, striped blazers and boaters during the day but back to the suits or evening dress for the evening So if you’re out and about for the Festival – daytime anything goesmore formal for the evening but ALWAYS dapper! Whatever you do wear, enjoy your Art Deco Festival.
