North of Napier
Peaceful lifestyle
I
f a relaxed lifestyle by the beach with access to some of the best restaurants and boutique shopping in Hawke’s Bay sounds attractive then Westshore might be just the ticket. There’s a small shopping centre with a café and chemist and it’s close to Ahuriri. Heading north is Bay View, a quiet area incorporating both country and coast. A small shopping centre and historic King George Hall form the heart of the village. There’s a relaxed, holiday atmosphere here. The main road is a popular stopping spot as it’s home to a winery, several fresh produce outlets and a busy service station. Continue north until the turning for SH5, the Thermal Explorer
Highway, turn left and you’re in Eskdale. From this junction it’s 128kms to Taupo. There’s a laid back ‘Good life’ ambience along the valley that’s bursting with goodness such as the best fruit, vegetables and produce, not forgetting the wine, which Hawke’s Bay has to offer in abundance. The vineyards are an attraction for visitors with the Linden Estate Winery incorporating Valley d’Vine Restaurant a popular venue, especially for weddings. It’s in this area that the scale of the wine industry in Hawke’s Bay becomes apparent as there are several wineries to visit. Further along the road there’s a café and craft shop to enjoy.

The outdoor atmosphere invites shoppers to relax and watch the passing parade. Look out for the Words on Walls – these ‘social sculptures’, intended to leave layers of additional meaning to the cityscape, appear on 20 sites dotted around the inner city. The public is encouraged to go on a journey of self-discovery reading interpreting the texts in their own way. An exciting new project, Murals for Oceans, first held in March 2016, is back again this year with Napier due to receive more stunning murals completed by local and international artists. So far 29 murals adorn walls in Napier and nearby Ahuriri. Napier murals are on the side of the Civic building, the national Aquarium, an amenity block near Pandora Pond and a wall behind Scenic Hotel Te Pania. Fresh artisan produce
T
he Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market. t’s a hop, skip and a jump to Napier City and only a 15-minute drive to Hastings. Sandwiched between two busy roads, Taradale and Kennedy, Onekawa has two distinct identities that roughly align to north and south of Kennedy Road. To the north the suburb is dominated by Onekawa Park a popular spot for tennis and netball players. It’s also home to the Napier Aquatic Centre with its pools and Spray Park. Nearby is a gym, the Napier Plunket Community Hub and plenty of parking in Flanders Avenue. The shopping centre in Maadi Road, opposite Onekawa Park, has a good range of shops and several eateries including a fish and chip
shop, a supermarket, butcher, pharmacy, greengrocer. There’s also a gift and book shop, a wool shop, laundromat, and a dairy. There are several amenities along busy Taradale Road (SH50) including a yoga school, a garden centre and café, a landscape centre, two vet clinics, a service station, two carpet retailers, a fitness centre, a couple of paint outlets and a hardware store. There’s also a bar and liquor outlet and a popular Thai restaurant. There’s a large and thriving commercial/industrial area across Taradale Road which stretches across to Prebensen Drive which is served by numerous cafés and bakeries.

live is a small, quiet, semirural community about 10k south of Napier and a similar distance from Hastings and Havelock North. The Clive River runs past the community and is a focal point for water sports in the area. Old cottages near the river bank hint at the age of the settlement. Now Clive is a mixture of old and new properties but it still retains a peaceful atmosphere. The cycleway passes nearby which makes Clive a good stopping point for refreshments at Zepplin, a café with displays of local art. There’s another popular café and bakery, a fish and chip shop, the Clive Hotel and the Corner Café
alongside a good range of services such as s service station, a kitchen and bathroom renovators, a butcher, hairdresser, chemist, dairy, supermarket and real estate agent. Heading south towards Hastings is a popular fruit and vegetable shop. Further south is a palm tree specialist and a wholesale and retail florist. At nearby Whakatu is David Trubridge’s gallery and workshop which is well worth a detour. Just over the river on the way to Napier is the home of Hohepa award winning organic cheeses offering public tastings and a variety of vegetables for sale, along with organic milk from the farm, and woodwork.

GREEN DOOR
Havelock North Boutique shopping at its best
H
avelock North is one of Hawke’s Bay’s premiere attractions, the gateway to some of the best wineries and is home to some of New Zealand’s best schools, both public and private. To many the main attraction of The Village is the shopping. It’s a great village environment where the parking is free, the people friendly and service is kind and courteous. There’s a wide choice of retail on offer with retailers driven by service and ready to look after you. No big companies here – just good old fashioned owner-operators who care. Retailers offer an amazing selection of quality handpicked products. This is boutique shopping at its best. There are gorgeous gifts for all age brackets and price ranges, beauty and pamper packages galore, food, wine and entertainment on tap. There is no greater collection of fashion available in Hawke’s Bay – clothing and shoes abound!
The Village has specialist book shops where you get personal recommendations, fabulous gift shops where the selection and gift wrapping is divine. Pharmacies and beauty salons provide friendly personalized services. Creativity in Hawke’s Bay Flourishing arts scene
H
awke’s Bay is home to some extremely talented artists and craftspeople, many of whom open up their studios and galleries to the public. Just as there are food and wine trails so too is there an Arts Guide promoted by Creative Hawke’s Bay. Perhaps it’s something to do with the warm and relaxed climate that attracts so many creative people to the Bay? Whatever the reason there’s a wealth of artistic talent in the region to admire and purchase.
The new pou on the banks of the Clive River.
A stroll through Hastings city highlights the artistic talent on our doorstep with public art works dotted around for all to enjoy. Pedestrians in Hastings City centre can admire the public art work dotted around the town centre including the much admired Suntrap above City Square by Neil Dawson, The Sheep and Leaf Lights by David Trubridge, to mention a few. The entrance to Civic Square is home to 18 beautifully carved pou representing ancestors from each of the marae within the Heretaunga district. The Hastings Art Gallery also in Clive Square exhibits national and international contemporary art and design as well as showcasing local artists. Nearby in Russell Street is the Hastings Community Arts Centre which has continuous exhibitions and sales of works by local artists and craftspeople. Napier City is full of surprises with plenty to admire in Marine Parade, Tennyson Street, Hastings Street and Emerson Street. There are several galleries, boutique stores oozing with art, crafts, fibre, weaving, beads, contemporary sculpture, oils, pastels, prints and Art Deco Memorabilia. Picturesque Ahuriri is a lovely village to have a wander and inspect the galleries in the centre of the shopping district and on West Quay. Allow several hours to

Its economy is based on sheep and beef farming, horticulture, orchards and cropping. There are also several vineyards in the district. However, there are some great shopping opportunities too. There are two main towns, Waipukurau and Waipawa and smaller townships including Takapau, Tikokino, Porongahau and Ongaonga. Coastal beach settlements include Aramoana and Blackhead.

Although small, the community of Waipawa is well served with a range of shops including antiques and a large secondhand trader, Penny Lane Emporium, a craft cooperative, several popular cafés, a fish and chip shop, a pub, a supermarket and a library. The High Street has undergone a renaissance with new stores and a facelift. This is a good place to stop, fill the car with petrol, enjoy a good coffee or a meal and browse the interesting shops. If time permits perhaps take a look at the museum too! In Waipukurau there’s a friendly atmosphere common to most rural communities in CHB. Retailers know the first names of all their regular customers and go out of their way to give good service. There’s no shortage of shops or services with supermarkets, plenty of essential rural services, boutique shops, cafés and eateries, two vets, a garden centre and a medical centre.

Green fingers?
Start planning for autumn & winter
S
hopping in its widest context embraces a multitude of goods and services. One area often overlooked is shopping for the garden be it vegetable seedlings, fruit trees, lawn seed, flowers or bits and pieces for a landscaping project. The last decade or so has seen a huge increase in the range of stock in many garden centres and many also sell a wide range of gifts and home wares. It’s becoming increasingly popular for cafés to set up within garden centres so customers can linger over a coffee while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere surrounded by all things green. Another concept gaining popularity is an on-site florist for that last minute floral gift, perhaps a personal treat or for that all important wedding. Chain stores in the main shopping centres offer a huge selection of annuals, perennials, pots and sculptures, bird baths, along with pavers, netting, bark, compost and so on. Nearby products including tools, sprays, and seeds will be available making them a virtual one stop shop. For aspiring gardeners who lack knowledge staff are often only too pleased to give help and advice
on anything from pest problems to planting schemes. Several nurseries specialize in particular products such as Tree Guys in Otane who stock a wide range of natives. In Clive there’s an outlet dedicated to selling Palm trees. There’s also a local nursery open to the public that has a thriving internet based business. The seasons bring different opportunities and challenges for gardeners. Now is the time to plan winter veges and spring bulbs. Mid-winter is the time to prune roses and look out for some specials on new stock that generally arrives mid-winter.
