A positive outlook

for NZ sheep and beef By George Tatham Director Beef + Lamb New Zealand

T

he past six months have been interesting ones for the sheep and beef industry. At the farm gate we have seen some solid returns for our livestock and at a sector level, we are seeing some international trends emerging that show real opportunities – and challenges – for our industry. These were highlighted in a Beef + Lamb New Zealand commissioned-report looking at Alternative Proteins; the future of meat and how NZ’s red meat sector should respond to advancements in alternative proteins. Written by Antedote, a San Franciscobased innovation consultancy, the report explored the potential disruption to red meat in relation to alternative proteins. It found that while these will compete with NZ’s beef exports, particularly to the US which takes 50 per cent of NZ’s beef, alternative proteins will also create an opportunity

to differentiate our grass-fed meat as a premium product. The report found that the acceptance of alternative proteins is being driven by a several factors including perceived health and environmental concerns, a backlash to factory farming systems and the ability to feed a population that is expected to grow to 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050. Governments, non-government agencies and investors are looking at ways to feed this increasing population –

and while alternative proteins will have a place- so too will red meat. Consumers are choosing to make what they feel is an ideological decision to eat alternative protein and this can, in part, be linked to the backlash against “broken” food systems such as factory farming. But the same drivers that are leading consumers to consider alternative proteins are where the opportunities lie for NZ’s grass-fed red meat. There appears to be a desire for better food at all levels which supports a strong future for “real” red meat. This is reflected in retail sales of grass-fed beef in the US which reached US$272 million in 2016, up from US$17 million in 2012 and sales are doubling every year. The eating habits of millennials, with their social values, holistic wellness goals and prioritisation of experience over product, are also starting to re-shape the food industry. We, as an industry need to understand what is important to our premium consumers and ensure we protect our natural food-production systems and products.

Within B+LNZ, work is well underway to develop and activate a global Origin Brand and Red Meat Story and to have in place a National Farm Assurance Programme underpinned by strong environmental performance. But more important than all of these is the quality of the meat we grow. All the branding and assurance programmes won’t make up for a poor eating experience and this is where our genetics and management come into play. I like to think we have some of the best genetics and farmers in the world and as an organisation, we support our farmers with a raft of information, resources and tools to help with every aspect of management – from genetic selection through to developing farm systems to suit different environments. Consistency is the key to producing top-quality, grass-fed red meat and this is achievable with the right genetics, forages and management. But we also need to have the structures in place to ensure our farmers are financially rewarded for their skills – and if predictions are correct- the future for the red meat sector looks bright.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018

Waikite Simmental - direct to the

source of great terminal sire genetics

O

n Friday 18 May, the Waikite Simmental stud located just south of Rotorua will be holding its second on-farm auction of two year old bulls. This is hard to believe given the influence the Waikite prefix has had on the Simmental breed in New Zealand for more than 30 years. Waikite is a property consisting of 1,013 hectares of productive rolling to step hill country in the heart of the Waikite Valley. Established in 1988 as the breeding ground for the then newly formed Landcorp, the property is now ‘ground zero’ for the broader business’s terminal sire production programme for Simmental bulls and FocusPrime™ and Texel rams. Waikite stud manager Peter Strawbridge is passionate about breeding terminal sires and believes in a hands on approach that starts at birth. The stud employs modern breeding technologies and objective performance using BreedPlan and the herd is continually challenged under commercial farming conditions. It is this that provides a strong point of differentiation with the Waikite Simmental, whereby its bulls are robust having proven their genetic worth under realistic New Zealand beef industry needs. “The bulls speak for themselves by showing their carcass size and meat density but although powerhouse in appearance they excel

in maintaining good structure under pressure and exceptionally mild temperament,” says Mr Strawbridge. “With such powerful animals in and around workers and yards, docility is very high priority on the things to get right and as such we work extremely hard to maintain good temperament in our bulls.” The Waikite stud breeding objectives are to breed the best possible terminal beef sires, offering maximum growth and carcass potential while maintaining a strong emphasis on calving ease and maternal productivity. This approach has been reflected in the herds performance on the Simmental Trans-Tasman group BreedPlan reports in recent years, taking a top 5% ranking for key terminal trails for 400 and 600 day weights and carcass while maintaining a top 25% ranking for calving ease direct and milk. In terms of the bulls that will be put up for auction this May, 24 rising two year old high merit Simmentals will be going under the auctioneers hammer with over half of the offering inside the top 10% on both maternal and terminal breed indices. This represents a truly exceptional opportunity to purchase directly from the source of one of the Simmental breeds leading genetics programme. STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018

Turiroa Angus approaches 75 years strong!

I

t is fair to say that stud breeding is in the blood for the Powdrell Family of Turiroa Angus Stud. The third generation of the Powdrell family to operate the stud, Andrew and his wife Tracey, took over operation and ownership in August last year. Turiroa Angus was founded in 1944 by Walter Powdrell. His father in law RE Jefferson gave Walter and his bride Ruth five Angus heifers as a wedding present. Walter added quality females and developed the stud from there. The stud was then taken over by two of Walter’s sons, Rick and Rowley, who ran the stud in partnership till 2000. Rick and his wife Olivia then took over sole ownership of Turiroa Angus and were joined by their son Andrew. Turiroa is still very much a family setup with Rick still involved in the day to day running of the stud and Olivia still helping out with some of the stud recording. Andrew is now the fifth generation of Powdrell’s to farm the land at Turiroa. He and Tracey feel very strongly about on-going improvement and the need ensure the land and enterprise is left in a healthy state for future generations. Stud breeding has always been a strong passion for Andrew with the family also running a successful terminal ram stud on the property with over 500 ewes.

The Powdrell family, back left to right, Tracey, Andrew, front left to right- George, Ella and Toby.

Turiroa also runs Romney ewes that go to a black face ram. Next year Turiroa will celebrate 75 years of breeding Angus cattle. There have been many highs during this time including exporting cattle to Scotland, China and Australia. In 1972 Karl of Turiroa was the first Angus bull in New Zealand sold at auction to be exported to Scotland. More recent highlights include setting an Australasian record for the highest on farm sale average of $9388 in 2002 when Ace of Turiroa was sold for $60,000 to a syndicate

made up of Te Mania, Te Whanga, Inveray and Australian rights to the Basin Angus in Camdenview, with several other stud bulls being sold that day. In 2012 Turiroa had another memorable sale with Turiroa Breaker selling for $72,000 to Oregon Angus in the Wairarapa: the stud averaged a whopping $10,927 at auction that day. The Powdrell’s are humble about the stud’s success and have always focused on breeding a bull for everyone. Andrew and Tracey have a clear vision of where they want the stud to head into

the future. The maternal strength of the cow herd is the backbone of their breeding programme. These females have been refined over generations through rigorous grazing, selection pressure, stockmanship and good old fashioned eye appraisal. “We strive to produce quality genetics that will maximise profitability through superior early growth, maternal strength and carcase merit,” said Andrew. Turiroa Angus will hold its annual twilight bull sale on June 27 at 4.00pm on the property.

Bulls fit for purpose

By Dave Warburton, Veterinarian, Vet Services HB Ltd

T

he stud bull sale season is upon us, and coincides with the end of pregnancy testing of the cow herds. How did the cow herds scan this year you ask? In general we have seen cow herds in great condition and this has seen fewer cows due to calve late in the calving period. Dry rates are still around our usual 5-10% range. Heifers are in good condition with standard dry rates averaging 10-12%, with the odd but not uncommon disaster in each age group. When purchasing a bull, it is always reassuring to know that the breeder has produced a product which has been verified at some stage to confirm fertility. The gold standard for bull fertility testing is to make sure that; 1. The bull is producing good semen – via a semen test 2. The bull is able and interested to breed a cow/heifer – via a serving ability test 3. The bull is free of disease and vaccinated appropriately – via a BVD blood test (negative result) and a BVD vaccination course preferably alongside clostridial and leptospirosis vaccination protection. Make sure you talk these tests through with your bull supplier.

If the breeder ticks all of these boxes they have done all they can to produce a fertile bull. However, as we know things can change, and the fertility of the bull with these tests is only a guarantee on the day of the test and not a guarantee for the future. This means it is your responsibility as the new owner of the bull to make sure he is still and remains healthy, in good body condition and also fit and toned up to do the job he was purchased for. All breeding bulls should be on an exercise programme six weeks out from mating. That means putting them in a paddock of similar contour country to what they are expected to cover during mating (ideal if the trough is at the top of the hill). Fat bulls are generally lazy bulls and more at risk of breaking down and less willing to seek out females, especially in big paddocks and big country. A bull’s fertility can change if he becomes lame, loses condition, has a big feed change, is heat stressed or is exposed to a new disease. An annual check up for breeding bull’s pre-mating in the spring is a great WOF and provides peace of mind that the bull is capable of doing what he is there for and helps avoid unwanted disasters (not caused by injuries), which are usually found out when it’s too late.

Make sure your bulls are in the best possible condition this year. Get them tested, and ensure they are in optimal health come mating time!!

Q&A with Tim Brittain Taste matters! Tim is Chairman of AngusPure Ltd, a past President and Life Member of Angus NZ and owner of Storth Oaks Angus in Otorohanga.

Tell me about the Storth Oaks difference?

We have a consumer focus at Storth Oaks. Our breeding program is about making our customers, commercial beef farmers, more profitable by breeding bulls that will leave progeny that meet consumer demands for quality, juicy, moist beef - the consumer is king and therefore taste matters. It has been proven around the world that the key ingredient to secure this flavour, taste and tenderness is marbling,

hence it is one of our criteria when selecting animals. Consumers are now brand driven and whereas in the past all farmers had to worry about was the looks and structure of the animal, we now have an extra criteria to select and breed for.

What are your breeding programme objectives? At Storth Oaks we use every technology available to speed up that process, whether it be AI to allow us to have a selection of the worlds very best sires

Tim and Kelly Brittain were awarded the 2017 Steak of Origin Grand Champion title for their AngusPure steak.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018 to make quicker genetic progress, or ET (Embryo Transfer) to get more progeny from elite females, or Total Genetics Resource Management (TGRM) to maximise breeding potential and keep a lid on inbreeding or genomics with our whole calf drop each year being 150K tested so we keep the very best for replacements or home sires we might use. We do all of that and more as well as keep structure through independently Beef Classing each animal as well as fertility testing all our sale bulls. It is a rigorous process to be selling the very best we can to increase our farmers bottom line and stop them from needing to look at alternative land uses. We want beef cattle farming to be their very best option. Here at Storth Oaks we measure everything we can, from foot scores and docility to everything in between. As such our herd has the very highest five star rating on the Breedplan completeness of recording system.

How did it feel to win the Grand Champion Steak of origin Competition in 2017?

We have entered the competition in the past and have been finalists before and Storth Oaks heifers have won the branded section of the competition but this was our first Grand Champion! This was a great reward for our breeding programme. The Heifer we entered had a very high AngusPure index (in the top 1% of the breed) and +2.7 for IMF or marbling.

How does Kelly contribute to the running of the business and are there any other people involved?

Kelly is a key part of the farm and manages the day to day operations. She has a fine eye for cattle and loves being out there doing it. Bruce Walker is our Stock Manager and Lydia Brown our junior shepherd.

You don’t come from a farming background do you? (Which is rather unusual) so how did you get involved with Angus cattle?

I grew up in the middle of Auckland City and did all my schooling in Auckland. The seed for my farming interest was sown, visiting my grandfather’s property in the South Island as a young boy and then holiday jobs on a farm at Taupo. From there I knew that was what I wanted to do and left school and worked on farms before attending Massey University. All the farms I had worked on had farmed Angus cattle and when the opportunity came up to buy some stud Angus cows at a herd dispersal in Te Kuiti I was away! Being able to see and follow your breeding progress is very interesting and seeing customers have success with our genetics is extremely rewarding.

February. The day was horribly wet so a farm tour was not possible but we had presentations and a look at cattle after a visit to the Waitomo Caves. This was followed by a seated BBQ dinner for 130. This gave us a chance to show our American Low and Slow BBQ’ing skills. We have been competing on the circuit so to speak - we are true meat lovers and low and slow is a great way of using some of the lesser cuts and making them truly to die for. March 25 saw us in Christchurch competing in round six of the Jack Daniels National BBQ Championships and Storth Oaks Smokers were Grand Champion - our first Grand Champion in BBQ’ing!

There seems to be quite a lot of discussion in the media about the

threat to the meat industry from plant based protein. What are your thoughts on this?

The industry is under threat of alternative proteins and disruption in farming will be no different than disruption in any industry. These changes can and will happen at great pace so we need to be prepared. In my view that part of the beef industry that is most exposed to this possible change is the commodity end. Grinding beef (bull beef and cull dairy cows) will be hit. Discerning wealthy consumers will still want to enjoy and be prepared to pay for real beef if it is of the very finest quality, marbled, grass-fed and raised with the best animal welfare and stock handling systems will enjoy good reward. Hence what I said at the beginning - taste really does matter!

The Jack Daniels National Barbecue Competition concluded on Sunday 14th April after seven rounds of competition. Tim and Kelly became Reserve Grand Champions for NZ and are ranked second in NZ.

t was while travelling through Europe in the late 1960’s that Tony and Glennis Thompson first saw and were smitten by Simmental cattle in Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria. They registered the GlenAnthony Simmental herd in 1973 while they were farming in the Waikato and Tony began his career as a vet.

February 2016 at the Dannevirke & Districts A&P Show with the Meat & Wool Cup won by Glen Anthony Yale (Yogi bear to his friends).

Herd 299 was founded with a handful of crossbred cows and one imported purebred cow Woolstons Fasan. A move to Waipukurau in 1974 saw Tony join the local veterinary practice. Glennis set about replacing the crossbred herd with purebred Simmental cows. These were mainly from the German

Fleckvich breed of Simmentals. The rest, as they say, is history with the herd expanding to 60 cows by the late 80s, several devastating droughts, and plenty of prizewinning bulls such as Yardstick and his progeny. GlenAnthony have been competing at A&P shows since 1978 and have built

19/10/2001: Hawke’s Bay Show, Hastings Showgrounds. Proud winners of the Meat and Wool Cup.

a tremendous record, not only for their success, but also for their willingness to support the A& P movement and promote the Simmental breed by regularly showing teams of up to 20 cattle. GlenAnthony has probably won more Meat and Wool Cup awards at major shows than most other studs.

Tony and Glennis still very much enjoy their Simmental cattle.

annah Gibb the Allflex FBNZ Senior Beef Ambassador 2017 shared a passion for Herefords with her grandfather the late Mike Langtry and it was he who taught Hannah everything there was to know about cattle and farming. Mike and Lorraine founded the Awhea Poll Hereford Stud at Martinborough in 1982 and later moved to Kimbolton in the Manawatu in 2008, which is where Hannah spent most of her free time on weekends and holidays. Last November the high achiever completed a Bachelor of AgriScience, majoring in Agriculture at Massey University and will graduate this May. Just recently her family made the difficult decision to wind up the stud she and her cousin Sophie ran at Awahuri which was founded with stock from her grandfather’s Awhea Poll Hereford stud. Her focus for now is on travelling and pursuing her career in agriculture and the next step in that journey is travelling to Australia. The major prize for winning the Senior Ambassador title was a trip to Australia, where Hannah will attend Beef Week in Rockhampton in early May. She’ll spend some time touring around Hereford studs and farms before attending the expo.

“I am so excited about experiencing a large cattle expo with so much to offer, from farm visits and valuable industry related seminars to watching and learning from the edge of cattle show ring, where I’ll get to see some different breeds of cattle that are more adapted to the Australian climate – that we just don’t have here in NZ. Not to mention the people I will get to meet and new friends I will get to make. This is a fantastic opportunity to attend a huge scale cattle expo, representing Future Beef NZ. All thanks to the phenomenal support of Allflex. My experience as the Beef Ambassador so far has been amazing. Attending the Platinum Primary Producers (PPP) conference was an invaluable experience – I even had several job offers and made strong industry connections and contacts. The Beef Week Australia trip coming up will be incredible. It has been an honour and a privilege being the Senior Beef Ambassador, such a worthwhile experience that has provided me with such huge opportunities for my future endeavors in the agriculture industry – across NZ and Australia!” Hannah is keen to encourage young people with any interest in agriculture, farming, beef cattle or meeting likeminded individuals to enter Future Beef’s Hoof and Hook Competition. “No matter your age or background, there is always

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018 something to be learnt, an experience to take away and friends to be made. The key thing here is to have a go! It is such a worthwhile experience you won’t regret. There are several valuable things that you take away from the competition. One of them is the hands on skills, knowledge and experience you gain from the modules on offer. Leading industry specialists run several modules over the weekend which are highly valuable and there is always something to be learnt; anything from artificial insemination, to backing a quad bike, to biosecurity, animal health, interview skills or putting up an electric fence! The other major considerable benefit for me personally is the friends you make and people you meet. Future Beef is such a unique event that gives you the opportunity to come together with likeminded individuals from all over the country! It gives everyone the chance to share their passion and enthusiasm for the beef industry that they might not otherwise get to do with kids at their school or in their town. Meeting industry leaders from the companies and organizations that run the modules and sponsor the event is also invaluable for making future connections in your career.” Hannah hopes to become more involved with FBNZ but this year has been just a bit too hectic. She aims to become a committee member and give back to the competition that has offered her so much. Unfortunately the FBNZ Hoof and Hook competition this year crosses over with

13

Beef Week Australia. But Hannah will fly home early from Beef Week so she can spend at least one day at the FBNZ competition this year. “I work part time from home for the NZ Hereford Association as the coordinator of NZ Hereford Youth. I am responsible for organising our Hereford Youth events such as annual technical tour, Australian Ambassador Exchange etc. This year NZ Hereford Youth is also paying for five young breeders to attend Beef Week Australia, so I will help oversee the group once over there. I am also heavily involved in organising the youth component of the 2020 World Hereford Conference along-side Gemma Dorotich who is chairing the youth committee. As you can tell my upbringing and involvement with Herefords and the beef industry is all thanks to my grandparents and my wonderful family. Without the support of them I would not have achieved all that I have today. My passion for supporting the next generation of youth in the beef industry has stemmed from the amazing support, opportunities and privileges I have been exposed to over the years. Long term, I want to end up back in NZ, working in the red meat sector and hopefully involved with NZ’s red meat story. I have a real passion for meat quality and processing, and finding a way to market and promote our natural, grass fed products in a way that fulfils the needs of our domestic and international consumers.”

“They’re bolting along now” By Chrys Ayley

C

hairman of the Hawke’s Bay Angus Association Charles Pattison is owner of the 973 hectare Waiwhero Angus Stud in Central Hawke’s Bay. The association represents 13 breeding members plus associates bringing the full membership list to about 20. Members are located from Lake Tutira to south of Dannevirke and out to the coast. This year’s herd walk dates are planned for 24 & 25 May and Charles is hoping the season runs well for the whole beef stock industry as the cow numbers are increasing after some earlier drought years. “Farmers are enjoying some of the best years they’ve had. This year, though late in arriving, we’ve had an amazing summer, rain in the autumn, the crops are all in and beef and lamb prices are good. Waiwhero had an excellent preg testing with only 9 dry out of 258. Prime beef is currently sitting at $5.40 a kg,” he says. His cattle are fattening well as influences have been favourable and Charles hopes to sell 25-35 on sale day. After a slow start the bulls have been fairly easy to look after “but they’re absolutely bolting along now. With weight gains exceeding a kilo a day.” Charles’s approach to selecting cattle is that he must like the animal first, visually its got to have the appearance and appeal

in its structural areas before he considers moving on to look at EBVs. “It’s got to look like the type of animal your wanting to bring into your property, into your stud, or perhaps your commercial herd.” Once he decides he likes a bull then he can go onto look at the EBVs. Decisions can then be made on what a breeder wants to prioritise such as growth, carcass traits including marbling or might be birth weight if wanting to use them over heifers.” “All EBVs come with a percentage of heritability, for example intermuscular fat heritability is only in the low 30s. So if you have a mum and dad you can split the heritability in half but the interesting thing is 68% is actually climatic and how well you feed the animal. Single trait selection can be quite dangerous. You must look at a spread of data not zero in on one particular area, Charles says. Thanks to outside influences, advertising for instance, Angus have become “slightly the flavour of the month in recent years.” In New Zealand with Angus cattle we are starting to produce well marbled, grass fed beef. “In the United States the more discerning customers are becoming less happy about feed lot cattle and love the idea of big open paddocks with cattle being fed on grass and living in a natural environment.”

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018

How to find the best

bull for your operation

Supplied by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics

T

he decision you make about which bull to buy this season will still affect your business in four cow generations’ time – that’s 15 years from today. So investing time to research your bull purchase now yields an exceptional return. Here are the five steps to find the best bull for your operation.

1) What do you want to achieve on your farm?

There are two parts to this question: First, what is your high-level farm operational goal? Maybe it’s to increase kilograms of carcase per hectare? Secondly, with an eye on that broad objective, what performance do you need from your beef animals to help achieve your big-picture goal? This will help you identify your “beef breeding objective”. For example “I need minimal stock numbers going into winter. Therefore, I want calves that will grow quickly, so I can quit them at weaning”.

2) How do you choose a breeder?

Once you’ve set clear objectives for your herd, identify a bull breeder with similar objectives. Ask the breeder for genetic trend graphs and percentile band tables for the breed. The genetic trend graphs should show a positive upward trend for the traits that impact on your goals. If not, look for another breeder.

3) How do you choose a bull?

First up, you need to identify which “traits” are important to you. There are up to 20 traits for which bulls are rated (based on what they will pass on to their offspring) by the genetic evaluation, Breedplan. So, if you want to increase the weight of your calves at weaning, then you’ll need to look closely at a bull’s “200 Day Weight” trait. Genetic merit for traits is communicated as a number, called an “Estimated Breeding Value” (EBV). EBVs are in units relevant to the trait (e.g. 200 Day Weight is in kilograms, while Gestation Length is in days). By concentrating on the EBVs

relevant to the trait/s that you are interested in, you can readily see which bull on offer is strongest in a particular trait and will therefore help you reach your goals more quickly. You can compare “your bull” to a breed average, which gives you have a feel for how he rates for that trait, relative to other bulls of that breed. You do this by using the Breed Averages that are always published below the EBVs for “your bull”. You can get a better feel of how your bull compares to other bulls of the breed by using a Percentile Bands Table. It will tell you if your bull is a stand out, or more middle of the road. Another useful tool is the EBV graph, which shows relative genetic merit at a glance. Basically, you want a bull to have bars toward the right hand side of the graph, for the traits you care about. Most simple to use is a bull’s Selection Index. Indexes identify ‘overall profitability’ and weigh up the balance of genetic merit across all the traits for a particular production system. It’s a single figure and presented as a dollar value. However, if you are focused on making progress in a particular trait, it’s worth taking the time to dig down into the EBV level of detail, rather than just using the Index figure.

4) Check your bull over for soundness

No matter how good a bull’s Index and EBVs are, if he can’t serve a cow then he can’t pass on his genetics. The Beef Class Structural Assessment system is a good objective way to make your assessment.

5) Welcome your bull home

Take the time to settle your bull into his new home and book him in with the vet for an annual pre-mating Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation. Want to know more? Visit www. morebullforyourbuck.co.nz and download the full brochure “Five steps to finding the best bull for your operation.”

Herefords are a multigenerational

passion

By Eileen McWilliam

H

erefords are a multigenerational passion for our family. We love their efficiency and docility and high quality carcass, they turn less grass into more meat and are the key to a profitable beef herd. Commercial pure Hereford herds are found throughout the country as they thrive under all farming conditions and extremes. Hereford bulls will also increase production in Angus commercial herds. The crossbred progeny grow and fatten more quickly and the heifers retained for breeding have increased milk, fertility, maternal characteristics and longevity. That is the beauty of hybrid vigour. It is well proven that crossbreeding with a Hereford bull will increase the profitability of a commercial beef operation. The heart and focus of the Te Taumata breeding programme is our cow herd. We are breeding for a moderate sized, long-sided, deep bodied, big ribbed, easy fleshing cow that will wean a heavy calf on our summer-dry, drought prone rolling hill country. Our cattle compete with sheep for grass so must have the constitution to convert low quality grass

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018 into milk for their calves all the while maintaining body condition. Te Taumata is a rolling hill country property in Gladstone, the driest district in the Wairarapa. The climate is very dry in summer and wet in the winter on primarily clay-based soils. The average rainfall is less than 700 mm (28 inches). Te Taumata fattened trading stock until 1958 when Alistair N. McWilliam established a Border Leicester sheep stud, followed by the establishment of the Romney flock and Poll Hereford herd in 1962. His sons, Jim and Bill McWilliam took over management in the 70’s. Jim’s son, Alistair, and his wife, Eileen, have continued the family business working hard to make genetic gains year after year and provide industry leading bulls and rams to commercial breeders. Te Taumata currently runs 120 Poll Hereford breeding cows alongside their Romney and Border Leicester seedstock ewes plus replacements and commercials. When selecting sires for use within our breeding programme we put a strong emphasis on the maternal side of the pedigree as well as the phenotypical and genetic traits of the bull itself. A bull must have a top producing mother to be a successful stud sire. We look for a balanced bull that shows muscle and width over his top, a big square hip with muscling all the way down the stifle. We want an easy-fleshing bull with rib and volume and depth of flank. Sound feet and structure and a bull that moves well is essential. Then we will

look at the paperwork to ensure his EBV profile will work in our programme. We avoid selecting for extremes in any one trait and look for a balance of all traits. We had a very exciting bull sale in 2017 with a strong clearance and achieving one of the top prices for Hereford Bulls sold in the country.

Lot 1, Te Taumata Gran Torino 15817, sold for $28,000 to the Campbell Family of Earnscleugh Station High Country Genetics, Alexandra. Gran Torino is very special in that he combines all of the physical characteristics we look for in a stud bull, fast growth, and a huge actual EMA and high actual IMF, with a strong

set of EBVs. He was one of the highest Market Indexing Hereford bulls across all Market Indexes sold in the country last year. We had a lot of interest amongst stud breeders and agents in the weeks leading up to the sale, but were still pleasantly surprised when the hammer fell. We sold five bulls for stud transfer in

2017 and appreciate the confidence other Hereford breeders have in our breeding programme. Te Taumata Gran Torino 15817 is a son of world renowned breed leader NJW Hometown 10Y. We imported Hometown 10Y semen in 2012 after a visit to the US where we visited the NJW Hereford herd, in Wyoming, and got to see Hometown 10Y himself, his mother, sire and other relatives. It is very important when importing genetics from overseas to have visually seen the animal and as many relatives as possible. NJW Hometown 10Y continues to influence our breeding programme through stud sires Te Taumata Foundation 14684 and Te Taumata Force 14683, two Hometown 10Y sons we retained for use within our own herd. Both bulls are breeding very well. Te Taumata Foundation 14684 was selected for the BLNZ Genetics Beef Progeny Trial for the 2016 breeding season. Te Taumata Force 14683 has sired the lead-off bull in our upcoming Bull Sale on Wednesday May 30 of this year, Te Taumata Houston 16962. LOT 1, Te Taumata Houston 16962 is a bull that we believe has all the makings of a top stud sire. It is very rewarding for us to be able to offer bulls of this calibre for sale. We are proud that the bulls offered for sale are all sired by our on leading stud sires, Te Taumata Deluxe 12520, Te Taumata Excalibur 13599, Te Taumata Force 14683 and Te Taumata

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2018

First Rauriki Charolais bull sale this year By Chrys Ayley

“W

e are breeding hill country Charolais that are going to get out in the hills and do the job they’re bred for.” Simon and Wendy Collin have been breeding Charolais since 2002 and selling bulls by private treaty since 2005, but this year they’ve taken the next step and are having an on-farm video bull sale on Tuesday May 29 at 11am. The property at Tourere Road in Flemington south of Waipukurau and east of Ormondville has no flat paddocks being 350-750 metres above sea level. It consists of 660ha plus 200ha of leased land. Livestock is made up of 110 mixed age Charolais cows which will be joined by another 40 commercial cows plus replacements along with 60 R1 heifers. On the sheep side are 3,200 Romney ewes, 1050 replacement ewe hoggets and 2,500 trade lambs. Simon believes the way of the future is video sales which is why this year they are embracing technology and holding an on-farm video sale. There will be 20 R2 pedigree registered bulls for sale and Simon anticipates the majority will be sold to commercial farmers. Once on video there will be an e-book available through the Rauriki Charolais web site and Facebook page which can be viewed beforehand,

along with all the breeding and breed plan figures. “It’s important the cattle are on site so people can view them before the sale and being right there if they miss out on a bull they can go back and look at another bull scenario. Once we get our internet technologies to a higher level I think there will be a lot more cattle that will be online so people can bid from wherever they are in the country or world.” Another reason for having a video sale is for H&S and compliance factors, he says. “We’re breeding more moderate Charolais cows 600-680k as the larger 800kg animals don’t function well, they don’t suit don’t suit the environment. We think the cattle are challenged enough: they’re not bred on easy flat country and mobility is something we are pretty conscious of.” Simon is mindful of breeding moderate cattle that are going to finish quickly and give a greater return to their commercial clients. “Commercial clients are the ones that drive us. I expect the main buyers will be commercial people. If we sell a stud bull, maybe two that’s bonus country for us.” Simon and Wendy are planning an open day on the 15th of May to view the sale bulls between 11.00 – 2.00pm. BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector

Innovation Award

A

nother award has been added to the trophy cabinet of leading Hawke’s Bay based AgriTech business StockX. The online livestock trading platform took out the inaugural BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award at last week’s Port of Napier Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards. The award acknowledges and celebrates those within Hawke’s Bay who have made an outstanding contribution through their knowledge, skills and application to improve the performance of the primary industries. “It’s great the see the Primary Sector Awards had the foresight to include an Innovation Award and to be the first winner is great recognition of what our team has achieved to date,” says StockX managing director Jason Roebuck. In a little over two years, the platform has created a national livestock marketplace and attracted nearly 4000 registered farmers and sixteen meat processors from across the country, who use the platform to buy and sell store, prime and cull stock. The platform offers it users a secure and transparent marketplace for livestock, with payment security and livestock quality assurance for buyers.

“Every start-up has its own story and it hasn’t been an easy task to get this far with StockX, but through strong shareholder support, customer demand and a collaborative partnership approach with industry we are building a national livestock marketplace that is directly connecting farmers and processors and maximizing value for all participants.” The beauty of the trading platform is that it enables farmers access to livestock opportunities outside of their area and the flexibility to trade when they want, with whom they want, all at a low cost. “Our entire team have agricultural backgrounds and we will further develop the platform through industry collaboration with the aim of being seen as a reliable and trusted partner for livestock transactions.” StockX is described as leading innovation in its field and is the only platform business of its type currently operating in the country. “There are no plans to take it overseas just yet with the main focus staying firmly on creating value for New Zealand.” “StockX continues to evolve its marketplace with online auctions coming soon and a collaboration with Livestock Agency business nationally will enable a marketplace for all participants.”

BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award

The BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award recognises outstanding individuals and businesses making a significant contribution through ideas, knowledge, skills and application to improve the performance of the primary sector. Having been involved as a long-term sponsor of the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year competition, BWR are thrilled to now be the naming sponsor of this exciting new innovation award. We recognise the importance of the primary sector and the role that innovation plays in developing excellence and performance in that sector. Last year we launched our new division, BWR Tech Hub to support businesses to adopt new technologies to streamline and grow as we see this as a key for our clients to remain competitive and continue to thrive. We congratulate all the innovative entrants this year and in particular the inaugural winners StockX.
