F
ollowing on from a solid sale in 2019, Alistair and Eileen McWilliams are looking forward to offering 28 bulls for sale on 27 May. “There is some uncertainty at the moment about the format of bull sales across the country this autumn, due to lockdown restrictions for Covid-19. However, we are still planning on having our normal on-farm auction if restrictions ease, Alistair says.”
While sale options are fluid it is always better to see a breeding bull in the flesh before purchasing. And walking through pens of bulls at an on-farm sale will give you a very good idea of the breeders programme focus and the depth of quality and productivity of their cow herd. The bulls catalogued for the upcoming sale are the result of nearly six decades of breeding for constitution and doing ability, maternal ability, soundness, longevity and carcass weight and quality. We have never wavered from our focus on producing bulls that will produce fast-growing steers and profitable, quality replacement heifers for our hill country clients. There is no greater reward for us then helping our clients to meet their farm production targets.
Sale bulls are sired by our senior herd sires Te Taumata Foundation 14684, Te Taumata Deluxe 12520, Te Taumata Horizon 16894 and Te Taumata Force 14683. Te Taumata Foundation has a strong representation in our sale lineup. He is sired by international powerhouse NJW Hometown 10Y, a bull we imported as semen in 2013. The carcass, depth of rib and fleshing ability of Foundation and his progeny is just phenomenal. There are also a very good group of bulls sired by NJW Duration 136X. We purchased a half share in Duration in 2011 and have been really impressed by his daughters. Te Taumata was one of the featured studs on the World Hereford Conference Pretour that started in Auckland and visited eight Hereford breeding operations and a few tourist spots in the North Island before flying to Queenstown for the conference. Breeders came from North America, South America, Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia and Australia. “We really enjoyed hosting 140 Hereford breeders from around the world on 8 March and were humbled by all of the really positive comments we received about our cattle and breeding operation, our farm and our family.

Breaking the drought We got little to no rainfall in January and February and finally received drought breaking rain on the 27 March, 150mm over 2 days. We farm in a summer dry climate and expect to dry off in
December and January. We always hope that the rain will come before the rams go out with the ewes in mid-March, but often this is not the case. We weaned the calves in February at 5-6 months of age. This is part of our annual management plan. It allows us to allocate higher quality feed to the calves and the cows

Eileen had an idea of what they wanted their new website to look like and worked with Pivot Design who was very good at putting their rough concept into something that is easy to navigate and looks professional. The new website went online in February.

The Perfect Storm

W
ith heavy showers now appearing daily it appears the five-month drought is finally breaking. Without question, the driest period here after what was a mild and dry winter, in my 40 years of farming.
A “Perfect Storm,” as defined by Wikipedia, “is an event which is a rare combination of circumstances drastically aggravates the event.” The “event” in this case is where livestock farmers ended up, given a never before set of circumstances combining.

BULL SALES are COMING
Over the last year rural New Zealand has watched a storm gathering instigated by political agendas, ideological theories exposed by those with other interests and financial gains to be made, human misery and weather patterns. The meat industry has always faced opposition from vegans and animal rights activists and probably always will, as the rights of animals approach those of humans, as is the case in the UK now. Alternative products being introduced to the market place, such as plant based alternatives of highly processed ingredients to copy the taste and texture of meat, are arriving and being sold as an alternative plant based “meat.” It will never be meat so why don’t they call it something else? Moves are afoot to depopulate more isolated farms, more marginal land, turning it into pine forests to sequester carbon. We have already seen some large farms being blanket planted in pine trees. This is livestock breeding country which supports rural communities all over New Zealand. Water, its quality and quantity, has become a huge issue as the demand for it everywhere in the world climbs exponentially. Farmers should not be isolated here as this is everyone’s issue. A burgeoning population here, and

around the world, is creating more demand for this essential part of life.. “Climate Change,” is now the catch phrase around the world. How dare we continue to farm cattle, they are the polluters of our waterways, they emit too much methane and they are responsible for young people thinking they have no future on this planet. How sad is that! Bashing livestock farmers has become the norm from some parts of New Zealand, and wholeheartedly supported by parts of the media who stretch to extraordinary lengths to try to make

By Christmas it became apparent that we could be looking at a very dry summer, but nobody had picked the perfect storm that was brewing during the new year. Drought began to set in, so plans are made to de-stock some lines of stock early with the price already dropping. We’ve had dry periods before, we can handle that, until something called Corona Virus becomes an issue in other parts of the world. The processing plants begin to falter at processing certain lines of stock and a waiting time becomes a nuisance value as the wharves in China become
a stockpile of containers waiting to be cleared. The slowdown here gathers momentum and the drought digs deeper and then New Zealand goes into lockdown! The sale yards close, people cannot get rid of stock so they cannot afford to buy again, as sheep lose condition going into tupping and the summer crops run out. We now have to sit and wait as our supplies of autumn and winter feed get used up. We’re waiting to get stock processed and we are still in a serious drought situation. Farmers we will survive this onslaught because we are resilient people who are amongst the best at what they do in the world. We can all improve what we

are doing and change if we need to. We will all learn from this perfect storm! It will change the way we do many things going forward. What we don’t want is part of society having an unprecedented attack on another part of society that after all, over the last few months is deemed an “Essential Industry.” Do we continue breeding Angus Cattle into the future, does the next generation bother going farming? My forbears cleared this land of trees 140-years-ago and developed the land with cattle being a major part of their survival. If we re-plant this country

in pine trees it will never return to productive farmland and we will be eating processed food imported from somewhere else in the world. It’s worth considering now we’re in Covid 19 lockdown. Bull sales will probably take on a different shape as we test online acceptance of selling livestock. Is this the way of the future or merely a temporary aberration of the norm? Are you going to be able to travel down south or up to Gisborne or do you just spend a year buying local? Which is a good idea, support your local breeders.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2020 Charlie, and confess to be enjoying some “quiet time” on the farm. “It’s an enjoyable time to be honest, there are going to be some positives we should learn from,” Paul says. Turihaua Angus has been family operated 120 years and the couple still work with Paul’s parents, Hamish and Angela, every day. “We’re so fortunate, you need someone you can trust on the farm in your bubble.” “For 116 years we’ve farmed our animals commercially, they’re not pampered, we don’t supplementary feed, we allow the environment to dictate our decision making with our genetics,” explains Paul. The philosophy behind their farming technique comes back to Charles Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest. “That’s how we farm our animals, we believe they have a very strong constitution and will perform in a huge range of different environments around New Zealand.” Paul is the fifth to be farming at Turihaua. “We have the history behind us which has set the foundation for the opportunities ahead of us, we’re so fortunate and thankful to our predecessors who have cared for the land so well and developed the livestock.” “Now I think it’s time that Sarah and I, and our children, take the farm and business into the future… we’re going to farm in a slightly different manner than what’s previously been done. We’re big on regenerative agriculture and we’re
learning and developing in that sector. We also feel there is a huge opportunity to develop the livestock under the regenerative model and offer a different genetic package that is more resilient in this ever-changing environment. We want to be leaders in this arena.” Paul’s academic background is scientific having studied zoology and later worked in conservation. He’s always had a strong passion for the environment, particularly wildlife and has been able to adapt his knowledge to run the farm. Sarah is an environmental scientist, working locally in the past for Gisborne District Council in the Water Resources team. Previous generations have done an excellent job retiring and planting low production areas and water ways to support the three QEII blocks on the property. The current focus is completing the Turihaua Stream restoration and also implementing a comprehensive pest control program. “For us this our Garden of Eden and we want it to be an oasis of wildlife and health. I do not agree with some of the conventional farming systems. I’ve always been one to question conformity and say OK why are we doing that? What are we achieving by this? Is there a different way? If I think it’s better for our health, the environment and our animals then we will investigate further.” “Under regenerative agriculture we’re trying to grow healthy soil which is the foundation for the pasture growth and livestock health. It comes back to peace
of mind as well, for our mental health… keeping away from chemicals, trying new systems and new things to improve what we’ve already got.” It was Hamish who started the process 10-years ago when he shifted to using biological fertilisers. Paul inherited the relationship with Abron and was convinced that what he was learning was the way of the future. Product still had to be applied but they used more biological compounds such as lime and guano.

So how do they do things differently?” It comes back to asking the question first: why? Using a chemical based fertiliser just doesn’t make any sense to me. There must be another way, why should we have to feed our grass when we can grow it naturally? That’s when I started delving down the regenerative agriculture path and in doing so engaged the services of Integrity Soils. After benchmarking the business, and formulating an action plan they are now addressing the soil limitations through improving species diversity

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2020 We are effectively growing top soil,” Paul says. “We’re farming a herd animal that used to migrate through the great plains of the world, they still want to be able to do that so that’s how we should farm them, getting the most out of them. We actually use the animal as a tool to replenish and fertilise the soil as well so that they’re our main workforce rather than machinery or other products.” “We want to be leaders in this area of the industry and if we want to take the business along with this regenerative

But for me the most rewarding part is selling our beef locally to family, friends and the community.” They are currently developing a relationship with ‘Food Cartel’ a boxed and delivered grocery provider who will only utilise local products. “That’s what we should get back to, everybody supporting their local economy.” East Coast Angus Ward & sale week “We believe The East Coast Angus Ward is the strongest in the country, we work together as a team even though we’re potentially competing for clients and market space. That’s why we have such a good sale week up here, we all band together and support each other.” Regarding sales this year the East Coast Angus team are regularly communicating but firm decisions can’t be made until level 4 lockdown ends. “I think we need to be Level 2 in order to have a crowd of under 100 people on the property, this is looking more likely as all Kiwis are doing an awesome job to slow the spread of the virus. If this doesn’t eventuate, we have a couple of contingency plans up our
sleeves, either pushing sale week back a month or moving to an online platform.” We also have the benefit of a separate Yearling Bull Sale so we can potentially carry some through to September and have a bigger sale then. T
here has been some uncertainty regarding Angus bull sales this year but there is still plenty to be positive about, Chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Angus Association Andrew Stewart says. Andrew runs Whenuapapa Angus which is in Kereru 40km west of Hastings. At this stage* the Association is planning eight bull sales during the week commencing 8 June and finishing on the Friday 12 June assuming COVID response is at Alert Level 2. If COVID levels haven’t dropped sufficiently then the Association have pencilled in the week commencing 6 July as a back-up. Should that not be viable then vendors will have to elect for Private Treaty or online sales, he says. While it will not be possible to hold a bull walk this year there will be some open afternoons organized so that those interested can visit by appointment and buyers have an opportunity to make their selections prior to auction day. Open afternoons will be organized a couple of weeks prior to the sale week. This will be the case whether that be June or July. When asked why Angus are so popular Andrew says “the Angus cow is most suitable to the environment, she performs, gets in calf and it’s not just all about producing a good calf. It
is all about her contribution to overall farm profitability. Performance is about producing a good calf on low value feed and contributing to overall pasture management.,
and is antibiotic free. It’s just a matter of trying to extract a premium.” New Zealand has maintained its’ supply chain during the pandemic albeit slightly fractured and disrupted. New Zealand has become one of the most trusted sources of protein for the Chinese consumer.. Swine flu decimated the pig population of China so there’s still a protein deficit. When production does return to normal the Chinese will want to replace their stock piles. Much of the North Island is finally recovering from drought. Many farmers have taken steps to feed their cows rather than cull them as has happened in the past. There have been remarkably good incalf rates reported in spite of the drought. Low interest rates are helping everyone. “There are a hell of a lot of people out there bashing farmers but possibly the world is waking up to the fact that farmers aren’t destroying the environment to the extent some people would like us to believe, COVID 19 has let the earth clear its lungs a little and at the same time farming has continued.” People are again appreciating that the economic backbone of New Zealand is producing quality food. *Interview dated 23 April

ell the bull sales are upon us soon, but it might not be all beers, steak sandwiches and meat pies this year.
It has been a stressful time for bull sale vendors given the current movement restrictions and as to what format the sales will take. A large crowd on farm may not be acceptable this year.

It is likely (when I wrote this) that you will be able to still view the bulls on an individual basis prior to the sale event, so I suggest you get in touch with your bull breeder and book a slot. This means a bit of planning prior to the inspection.
The first thing you need to look at is what is going on in your herd.
Are the cows an appropriate size for your farming environment? Cow size has been genetically increasing by 3kg a year for the last 50 years in the Angus breed, and the environment they live in and potential environmental risks are now more challenging. Is the fertility of the heifer and cow herds acceptable? Is genetics the limiting factor or vitamin G (grass) and animal health such as disease and minerals compromising the best outcome? These are questions you can ask your Vet to rule in or out potential risks. Are my weaning weights acceptable? Good commercial herds should be achieving calf growth rates of 1kgLWG/ day while on the cow. If not then consider feeding levels, milking ability of herd, genetic growth.
Now have a look at the bull team and get them in the yards for a health check.
Were there any anomalies at pregnancy testing that could be due to a bull failure? Last year we were inundated with bull tests after pregnancy testing because of this. Are they fit and healthy? We always get a few calls about bulls scrapping and injuring each other when you pull them out of the girls. Best to know that now than in the spring. Have you given the young bulls a drench coming out of mating? They are also likely to need copper supplementation and a lice treatment heading into winter.
Now you have some info on your herd and the number of bulls you need, you can identify where the opportunities are to improve performance.
Visiting your bull breeder prior to the sale actually makes a lot of sense because it also gives you the opportunity to engage more closely and put the onus on them with a robust question like…. “These are the traits I want to improve so tell me what is the most appropriate bull(s) for my business in this catalogue.” You can then rank them yourself on EBVs and type and walk away with a plan for the auction, so if you need to do your bidding online (which seems to be the way it might

The second thing you need to ask your vendor is what testing has been done to ensure my bull is fertile on point of sale. Bull testing of sale bulls is able to be conducted at Level 3 if safe distancing is achievable. In most cases this should be straightforward, but the timeframes are now much tighter. Some bulls that have been catalogued, may as a result of not passing fertility testing, be withdrawn. The definitions of fertility testing is quite variable amongst vendors. Some vendors

do nothing and there are some that do everything they can to ensure the product (the bull) is up to scratch. Because of this wide interpretation, last winter Vet Services Hawkes Bay set up our Breedabull gold standard which means that all bulls that pass this gold standard will have a Breedabull certificate outlining what has been done and when it was done. It’s not a guarantee but it means the bull has been thoroughly evaluated for normal fertility. If you look after him when he gets to your place, then barring injury, you are unlikely to have a problem. An annual WOF of your bulls pre-breeding is always advisable.

It’s all about the wow factor By Chrys Ayley
R
ecently Lucy Collin attended the World Hereford Conference in Queenstown to compete at the Young Breeders Competition. For as long as Lucy can remember cattle, especially Charolais have been part and parcel of her life as her parents Simon and Wendy Collin operate Rauriki Charolais in Central Hawke’s Bay. “I’m very passionate about genetics and the beef industry in New Zealand,” she says. Lucy was selected to captain the NZ Future Beef team and her team-mates were Callum Woodhouse, Cara Doggett, Georgia Rhodes and their “amazing” manager Hamish Grant. Lucy was the 2018 Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador and Cara was named Ambassador in 2019. The conference ran from 7 March to 13 March and the whole experience Lucy describes as “amazing” but “to be fair I was holding out all week to get to Wanaka show. I just love showing cattle.” There were nine youth teams from all over the world including New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Australia and Sweden. “It was a really great experience being able to exchange views. It was awesome and we all got so much out of it,” she says. “I learned so much. It was awesome to see how each of the nine different countries did things, like turning out the cattle for

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2020 the show and it was very interesting to see how everyone paraded their cattle in their handler heats.” It was an action packed week with education, sightseeing and competitions ranging from agri-business, to meat cuts, genetics, fencing and animal health. There were also several visits to view farms including Waiau Herefords, Monymusk Herefords, and Locharburn Herefords. The cattle for the young breeders were supplied by eight farms and Lucy’s team drew Waiau Cattle. More relaxing activities included a Shotover Jet boat trip, go karting in Queenstown, a trip to Wanaka and plenty of sightseeing. The gala dinner involved a trip on TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station. Much effort went into preparing the cattle for the handling competition. Outsiders would be amused to see heifers being cosseted and papered by teams of youngsters looking for that elusive prize. Some are washed and blow dried and Lucy explains that the blower helps with training the hair to go forward which helps to give the cattle a fuller, more muscular look. “It creates a wow factor and they enjoy having hot air blown on them. And clipping well no one likes to look untamed!” The choice of shampoo varies between individual handlers with some opting for washing up liquid and others horse shampoo, she says. Lucy was surprised, somewhat indignant, to learn that while New Zealanders wash and blow dry their cattle on the morning of the show the British teams didn’t. “It’s very interesting how they clip them. Some take a lot of hair off while we try and make them look more refined and try and take all the fluffy stuff off. “The whole process of watching and talking with the competitors was a valuable learning experience Are there many differences between showing Herefords and Charolais? ‘They’re both big cattle but I show them in exactly the same way, it’s just with Herefords the terminology is different. Overall the team won the agri business competition and received a few seconds and thirds while Callum was named the best stock judge. Lucy says it was a great effort given
that they were competing against teams who were much older than most of them. Lucy says they were fortunate they had the support of the main sponsors Phil and Lyn Barnett of Kaitoa Polled Herefords near Dannevirke. Having to go into self-isolation following the outbreak of Covid amongst some conference goers was “quite nervewracking. It was a bit of a scare but fortunately Lucy was able to get some fresh air on her horse and her family are all fine.

Right now Lucy is working as a general farm hand in the Tiraumea district in the Wairarapa having graduated last year with a BA from Massey University, majoring in biosecurity. She hopes to move into work involving genetics later this year and has the thrill of looking forward to selling her first bull at her parents Charolais sale in May. Her own herd numbers three now and there are exciting times ahead, she says.

New sale initiative to benefit

angihau Angus kicks off the East Coast Bull week with their annual on-farm sale on Monday 22 June 2020. The team of thirteen full time staff are involved on the sale day and everyone is excited to launch a new sale initiative. “This year we have a charity bull which means all proceeds from the lot will be donated to our local Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust,” station manager and stud master, Dean McHardy says. The lot will be chosen on the day of sale and introduced as the charity bull prior to bidding. The annual on-farm bull sale commences at 9.00am with paddock viewings available any time after 7.00am. Viewings are also available prior to the sale by appointment. There will be a hot drink and snack available before the sale, and a complimentary brunch offered afterwards. Last year, Tangihau Angus celebrated 70 years of breeding stud cattle with the opening of their on-farm sale complex. “The decision to go on-farm was an easy one. We can show the buyers where the bulls are bred and run. The viewing pens are great for showcasing the bulls in their own environment,” Dean says. The
on-farm sale complex hosts undercover seating overlooking the arena and last year attracted a crowd of around 300. In 2019, Tangihau Angus achieved the highest average for Angus bulls throughout Australasia with a record sale average of $20,913. Tangihau Angus is a large sheep and beef Station on the East Coast, located approximately 45km West of Gisborne. It is about 6700ha of medium to steep hill country with an annual rainfall of around 1000mm/pa. Tangihau principally breeds bulls to suit its own terrain and climate. It was founded in 1949 as a result of the difficulty the Manager at the time, Laurie Cooper, had in sourcing bulls that suited Tangihau’s steep hill country.
Tangihau needs to breed cattle with positive fats, Dean explains. when fed in excessive amounts cattle will bank the feed and can later utilise this in tough times such as in drought conditions or severe winters. “This season, we’ve had a very dry February and March and are feeling the effects of that now,” he says.
Tangihau bulls are bred on the hills and need to cover a large commercial breeding herd, producing females with the ability to rear a calf and get back in calf under challenging climatic conditions. All Tangihau stud cattle are DNA tested for parentage and are clear of all known genetic defects. “We want buyers to purchase with confidence,” he says.
Laurie managed the herd from 1949 until 1964 when Toby Mullooly took over the farm’s management. Toby continued to manage the stud from 1964 until 1990. Dean McHardy has been responsible for the farm management and stud herd from then until the present day. All three managers have been keen cattleman with a strong passion for Angus cattle, genetics and breeding quality bloodlines. Commercial cows and calves

The station’s objective has always been to breed bulls principally for use within its own commercial herd which is a key point of difference. The surplus bulls are sold at the annual Angus sale held onsite at Tangihau Angus sale complex. The feedback from repeat buyers is positive, they are seeing heavier calves and they say the quality is showing throughout their herds. Because of demand Tangihau have decided to increase the amount of bulls for sale going forward. This year Tangihau Angus will offer up 40 two-year bulls for sale. They are aiming to have in excess of 50 bulls on offer in the coming years. Progeny are sold to both stud and commercial operations and semen sales continue to be available. Tangihau is preparing for online auctions as an alternative option to the annual bull sale. “If we are unable to sell bulls via live auction, we will sell online. he three local Taumarunui studs are working together to create a day for our locals and also to attract interest from out of the area. Approximately 115 bulls are for sale on the day. This will be the first year with Shian, Black Ridge and Puke-Nui sales all on the same day.

Shian Stud was established in 1972 by Brian and Sharon Sherson. The stud is now run in partnership with son Rob and his wife Tracy. Approximately 45 bulls are catalogued for auction annually.
Second generation Angus breeder Dean Sherson and his wife Teresa are owner operators of Black Ridge Angus Stud. The sire bulls include the recent purchase from Tangihau, Maximus N458 for $62000 among other quality sires. They also run two hundred stud females on the home block where the annual stud sale is held.

K
atherine Robertson was raised on a 5000-acre farm in the South Island and spent much of her time out with her father who, she says knew his stock.“I grew up with him yelling at me “Don’t just look, use your eyes.” He was always pointing out details about animals and what you should look for.” That early education has paid dividends and Katherine still uses the knowledge she gained from her father at her own farm, Kaha Speckle Park Stud in Pio Pio, 24km south of Te Kuiti. During her 24 years in the King Country she has farmed both beef and sheep. The stud was founded in 2009 and Katherine imported embryos from Canada.
An internet search led her to select Speckle Park. “I was really intrigued; they looked like good cattle and were very well marked so I went ahead and did it.
maintain condition, but Speckle Park will hold on, they don’t fall apart. “They’ve held their condition in the drought and in the works they grade really well.
“Since then I have purchased other embryos from different blood lines. I slowly built the stud up and used the bulls over my own cows: I had a Shaver stud and used them as recipient cows.” Slowly she bred up her Speckle Park herd.
“That’s one of their main benefits because in hill country dry they get through the situation, you know they are still going to be there at the end, they’re not going to fall to pieces.
“They were developed in Canada under pretty harsh conditions and perform exceptionally well in Australia, again in really harsh conditions, if you hit difficult conditions they maintain their weight.” With some breeds, she says, you have to keep pumping the feed into them to
“They’re not big glossy animals, they’ve been worked, are keen, interested and will just grow out. They are the genuine article, they’ve not been pumped up with extra feeding, they haven’t been fed with anything but pasture, when it’s got tough in the drought, they’ve got tough as well.”
The herd now numbers 170 commercial cows/ heifers being half bred right up to 7/8. She’s sold 3/4 and 7/8 bulls to the dairy industry and have had very positive feedback. “They have been impressed with how easy the bulls were to manage and all of their calves sold easily. I have sold my half-bred steers as yearling and I have repeat buyers who actually ring up asking when they will be coming up. “The scanning results are very good with some of the cows having marbling over 8 IMF% They hold their condition in difficult times like a drought. They yield well and are easy to handle. I sold some steers in early September-exactly two years old. They all went prime and average 290 kg. “I believe that the stud needs to be run under commercial conditions as they need to be able to perform for the buyers. I calve in August/September so my bulls are not yet two years old at sale time. They are allowed to grow into themselves and this reduces the risk of injury later in life. “They are genuine articles, they just keep growing out and are not even two years old, people have been surprised how they keep moving. I have been very happy with the breed.”

ast year, with the assistance of PGG Wrightson Stud Stock Rep/ Auctioneer Cam Heggie and NZ Farmers Livestock Agent Brent Bougen, the King Country bull breeders got together and formulated the concept of having the regions bull sales over three days – The King Country Bull Week.
Richard Jolly of Hingaia Angus Stud says it was very successful and enabled bull buyers to come in and go to a range of sales over the three days. If they wanted to buy a different breed of bull, they were able to do so. Also, larger stations who required large numbers were able to complete their purchases over the one, two or three days.
Those who attended would have realised that the King Country is a good place to buy top genetics at affordable prices. And this year is just the same. There’s another good line up in 2020 and considerable interest even though the circumstances are difficult. “The bulls are looking remarkably well considering we’ve had the worst dry period in 50 years. It’s been pretty tough. We’re right now, but just haven’t got the covers to go into winter,” he says. “With the challenges we are hoping for much the same format over the three days this year. Breeders are opting for a number of sales solutions depending on the lockdown level. They have alternative dates along with different means of sale including private treaty and online sales depending on the situation. We recommend prospective buyers keep in touch with vendors and agents.
“It’s certainly going to be an interesting year. Personally, I think this year will be more about clearances, rather than averages, people will just want to get their bulls out, sold and gone.” On the positive side the good news is the uptake of technology such as bidr and similar online sales. North America, Australia and many parts of Europe all use this technology. “We’re just so traditional we haven’t gone there. But this is forcing our hand a little bit and I think in years to come it will become more and more prevalent, people will build it into part of their system. It does work.”
If we are in lockdown Level 2 then many of the on-farm sales will continue as advertised. Visitors are always welcome to contact vendors for pre-sale inspection. Cam Heggie says that the King Country is quite representative of the rest of the country. “We’re all guessing but I’m quietly confident we will have some sales.

Giving all a fair crack at the bull By Chrys Ayley
R
ock-End Herefords is a polled Hereford stud run by the McCormick family in the Paraheka Valley in the heart of the King Country, about 40 minutes south of Te Kuiti. Pete and Kirsty McCormick own the farm and stud and son Josh is the farm manager. Their aim is to breed fertile, well fleshed cattle that perform in commercial environments with temperament and constitution being paramount. Every year they hold an auction in conjunction with neighbours Tarangower and their aim is to sell 25 Hereford bulls. “At this stage the goal is still to hold our annual auction on Tuesday 26th May at 11.30am in conjunction with Tarangower Angus Stud at 912 Ngatarawa Road, Mahoenui,” Josh says.
“We aim to breed moderate framed, efficient cattle and our mixed age cows are averaging 550kg most years. They are probably a bit lighter this year due to the dry. It’s been a hard summer. “We put a lot of pressure on female fertility. We calve our heifers at 2 years and they have to calve every ear to stay in the herd. Heifers are mated for 2 cycles and our cows for 3 cycles.We target to wean our calves between 240-260 kg. A number of females wean calves at 50% of their body weight.” Josh says they have performed AI with 100 females for the past three years. The benefit is that it allows them access industry leading sires that often aren’t for
sale and also provides them with robust cross referencing for their EBV accuracy.

On sale day buyers come from all over including the East Coast, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, the King Country and Ruapehu. A fair proportion of their bulls go to breeders who are cross breeding with Angus to gain the benefits of hybrid vigour.
Long term I think the current situation will probably push us towards at least having an online bidding option. In Australia most of their sales are live with on-line sales run simultaneously. It gives people from out of town a better chance to buy from wherever they want to.
It will be interesting to see how the sale day pans out. Josh realises that not all their customers will be comfortable with technology so they would prefer to hold the on-site auction. Selling on-site makes it easier for clients to buy the bull they want. “With sales by private treaty it’s hard to decide who gets first pick of the bull. I
