Nurturing and educating well rounded kids his is an annual project Hawke’s Bay T Today supports with enthusiasm. It’s a rare opportunity for schools in the Bay to
brag about their achievements and take stock of the many goals reached by students and staff throughout the academic year. This publication helps our schools tell the public about their stories and also gives readers the opportunity to learn about the wider community and the exceptional children, and their teachers, who represent our future. School has gone way beyond the 3Rs, although reading, writing and maths are still a major focus, with curriculums designed to encourage excellence, innovation, inquiry and curiosity along with diversity, equity and integrity. It’s a tall order to instil such values and, at the same time, have children learn to express themselves, develop empathy and make ethical decisions. Ultimately children are learning to develop the competencies they will need for study, work and lifelong learning so hopefully they will go on to realise their full potential. A visit to any school today is an inspiration in itself as teaching methods have changed beyond imagination and continue to do so at a rapid pace. As centres of learning excellence we see a huge range of learning, social, sporting and cultural activities to challenge our youngsters. Outdoor learning is part and parcel of the complete learning experience whether at the beach, at camp, at the local reserve,
cross country or on the ocean. Children are encouraged to be active explorers and there’s plenty of fun incorporated into the curriculum and fun generally equates to learning. Activities these days include canoe polo, Mathletics, triathlon, hip hop, camps, art deco activities and a range of learning in action activities. Interactive technology has been embraced to support learning and the results are quite
astounding with children happily accepting technology as a learning resource which has opened up even greater avenues for structured learning and fun. There’s also a great focus on developing meaningful, respectful and caring relationships and taking responsibility for self. Communication skills, once largely ignored, are part and parcel of a child’s life from the time they start early
childhood education and throughout their school life. We hope you enjoy reading the success stories. This publication would not have been possible without the support of local businesses that have sponsored their local schools in this publication. These businesses have made a contribution to the region, and its future leaders, and deserve our continued custom.
Te Kura o- Tuapapa – Terrace School Waipukurau koutou, KiaAsoraI reflect on my first year at Te Kura
o- Tuapapa/Terrace School, it has been an exciting year of growth. We have worked hard to build a sense of family (whakawhanaungatanga) within our school, forming relationships with our tamariki and wha- nau.
Karakia sets a positive tone for the whole school and leads into settled classroom learning. Te Aranga, our bilingual classrooms, are a hub for learning te reo me nga- tikanga Ma- ori. Our tamariki excel on the sports field and have proudly represented us across many sports. This year we have introduced music opportunities, which we plan to grow next year alongside kapahaka. We are very grateful to have become a Duffy School, giving books to tamariki and encouraging a love of reading. Our team of teachers and support staff work hard to support the learning and wellbeing of all tamariki. Te Kura o- Tuapapa/ Terrace School is an exciting place to be, and I am priviledged to lead our team. Nga- mihi nui, Matua Ānaru
T aho Primary School Te hiringa i te mahara - be the best you can be. 2019 has been an exciting year for T aho Primary School. We farewelled our principal of 15 years, Mrs Diane McCallum, and welcomed our new principal, Ms Zac Anderson. The staff and students offered an amazing p whiri for Zac which was warmly supported by the community. We finally began working alongside the architect to help make our dreams come true for the rebuild of T aho - whilst it seems a long way off, it has been an exciting journey to consult with our community, learn more about our local stories and discover unique qualities of our site like an underground river and the kinds of plants that used to grow here. We have been so proud of how our tamariki have represented themselves and their school in many activities both inside and outside the classroom. It’s been incredible to see our tamariki live our values on a daily basis! We have had junior and senior camps at Kaitawa where the tamariki enjoyed amazing outdoor activities and building whanaungatanga with each other. Students have been busy in their classrooms engaging in ako by helping each other learn and creating presentations of their passion projects! Senior students have been busy developing a plan to raise seedlings on site that will go towards the regeneration of our river and contribute to the plantings for our new school - they’re demonstrating kaitiakitanga in action! We have had so many new enrolments at T aho throughout the year and it’s been wonderful to see how our students welcome new members of our wh nau with open arms - awesome manaakitanga! We finished off the year with fabulous celebrations around our school for the Kapa Haka festival - seeing every single one of our tamariki on stage was a real treat and they performed with enthusiasm and passion! As we undertake preparations for teaching and learning for 2020, we would like to say a massive thank you to our Board of Trustees for their ongoing support. To our wh nau - we can’t do this without you - thank you for entrusting us with your babies! Have a safe and happy holiday, Whaea Zac

SHERENDEN AND DISTRICTS SCHOOL SH OL Our small, quaint, rural school of 60 pupils with superb community support has had another incredible year of achievement and progress not only inside the school but really punching above its weight on some bigger stages as well. Catering to the ‘whole child’, with our ROAR values underpinning our school culture. Agentic learning and sustainable education driving our direction, the BOT, staff and community are exceptionally proud of our kids showcasing themselves to the wider districts. Some examples include; out of 35 teams, our year 7 mathletics team managed to finish 2nd place (continuing the outstanding achievement of our year 8’s 2nd place last year) against some schools of over 300 pupils. One of our year 7 boys managed to finish 2nd place at the Hilmac speech competition, to follow on from one of our year 8 girls winning first place in the year 8 competition last year-an individual who was also part of our winning ‘Talk the Talk debate team’ competing against all the major intermediates in our region. With a Cross Country attendance of 98%, 48/59 students managed to place in the top 20 at our cluster school cross country, 13 of these students in the top 3 and 40 of them in the top 10. 45/60 pupils have been involved in a or multiple team sports which include 39/42 of our year 3-8’s. Our school offering Cricket (2 teams),
Touch (2 teams), Hockey (2 teams) and Netball (3 teams)ensuring our students are learning the values of education in and outside the classroom. Just under 40% of our students are part of the school choir or are learning a musical instrument during school time as Arts, Music and cultural awareness support the growth of our students in preparation and readiness for high school and beyond. Our kids are learning to balance their wonderful outdoor educational experiences they receive in their rural lives while utilising the digital platforms they have access to at school to support their growth. These platforms enable our students to share their learning and communicate the global and local issues surrounding sustainability and environmental issues. With solar panels and a native tree planting project to restore native bird life to the school grounds as projects that are already underway, we want to utilise these resources alongside our school chickens, vegetables, fruit trees and water storage to give real life and practice setting to the teaching of the core curriculum subjects. Well done to all the Staff, Board and unbelievable parental and community support we get for enabling another wonderful year of achievement in education.
The Westshore Way
Located in beautiful Napier, Hawke's Bay Our school Westshore Primary School is located in the suburb of Westshore, Napier and caters to children aged 5-11 (years 1-6). The school's unique environment boasts beach, surf lifesaving, our own rocky shore, estuary, cycling and walking trails, and a marina all across the road or in easy walking distance. We are a small school, culturally diverse with a strong community feel. Westshore School is an inclusive school and is not currently zoned. We are a Decile 5 school. We have a fantastic Board of Trustees and PTA that work hard to ensure our students do not miss out on any opportunities to improve their learning.
to inspiring students to reach their full potential with confidence and enthusiasm and to respect themselves, others and the environment. We use our natural environment as part of the teaching programmes with a focus of exploring and understanding natural settings both within the school gardens, along the seashore and estuary. Learning extends beyond the classroom and is incorporated in the many extracurricular activities our children participate in, both within and outside of the school environment. These include various team sports, the arts, music and cultural.
At Westshore School we help students gain a sense of pride and ownership of who they are through a localised curriculum. The school is committed

Some of our students have been involved in multiple chess tournaments throughout this and last year. Unfortunately we were unable to attend this years Hawkes Bay regional individual tournament due to a timetable clash with our cluster athletics, meaning Duncan Logan (year 5 boy) was unable to defend his crown.
Our school was fortunate enough to get a visit from the Trillian Trek trust providing a great deal of entertainment for our students.
Using blocks and batons during the year our students have made shelters, forts, created shops and even their own currency-using acorns to purchase items off other competing markets.
During the year our school has had outstanding participation in events such as Mitre 10 tough kids, Rippa Rugby, Weetbix Try-athalon, Tough Guy/Gal event to go along with their efforts in the Rural Cluster Ki o Rahi, Cross Country and Athletics.
As part of our gymnastics unit during Term 2 we had weekly visits to Omnigym over a 5 week period. Culminating in a gymnastics carnival for our community to celebrate the progress of our students.

2019 – another jam packed year of learning. Our main priority this year was to ensure our tamariki were engaged and motivated through our core value of Aroha. This meant ensuring our tamariki were valued and supported to explore new experiences, also to establish and sustain a love for learning! We focussed on developing our superpowers, those areas of strength for our children. We based learning experiences on students strengths and their interests to hook them in, to enhance their mana and soar to new levels! We have had a blast throughout our 2019 journey.
Our Epro8 team work hard on their Hampster wheel challenge.

At Frasertown School we have a tremendous team of teachers and support staff that continuously go above and beyond to ensure our students experience success. Our Board of Trustees are a small but productive team that provide
stablity and guidance. Our whanau are awesome in their willingness to support whereever and whenever we need them. The jewels in our crown however are our students. They are an energetic, motivated and diverse bunch of individuals who are always ready to give things a go, they are also finding their bounce when things don’t quite go right. 2019 has been solid and productive. I hope everyone has a big rest during the summer break – it has been well earned!
As teachers and school leaders we do what we do in order to support all our tamariki to thrive! Our Music Super Power group perform at the Wairoa Music Festival using drums they made themselves!
All the very best to you all for the festive season and I look forward to another awesome year of fun and laughter at Frasertown School in 2020!

The Year that Was This year has been action packed – Harold and the Life Education truck visiting early in the year sparked lots of excitement... and was an initial step into the journey of team building, leadership and Manaakitanga that prevailed over the year. This was further developed as groups learnt to ‘Huddle Together’ in their water safety sessions at the Community Centre (thanks Mrs Gasson), look out for teina( our youngest learners) as we practiced our tsunami drill, worked collaboratively in the Wairoa District Pro8 and Maths challenges and supported each other on a daily basis. Our Catholic Curriculum is integrated into all we do at St Josephs. A Catholic Curriculum review in term 4 affirmed the strength and integrity of this when the team spent time on site with us. Each class takes turns presenting the weekly mass, and it is exciting to see childrens confidence and faith growing each time they come to the church. Learning is fun at St Josephs - dressing up for our easter pageant, researching and then dressing as a Saint for All Saints Day, even cooking pancakes for Shrove Tuesday – Yum. We made cards and gifts for staff on Support Staff day, and prepared an amazing Mothers day lunch at Tawhiti a Maru marae which over 40 Mums enjoyed. We did tsunami drills – beating our time on the first go, we had curriculm evenings with our whanau, and our seniors were lucky enough to experience a coding workshop – Ada Ada Ada - with local sponsorship. So much learning ...what to share... we asked some

tamariki for a brief reflection on their highlights... Hi ! My name is Precious -Leigh Clair and my highlight of the year is netball. It was really fun for our team of Naomi, Boh, Rosa, Roka, Cjay, Peyton, Miss Paulette Clair and I. We won nearly all of our games. At prizegiving Jaden got a medal. By Precious-Leigh Clair On the 9th of November we had a magnificent gala. If you are wondering what we had at our inspiring gala, well Room 5 had candy floss and lots of sweets. Room 4 had toffee apples and lots more. Room 2 was the most inspiring, entertaining and eye catching store; we sold beautiful gingerbread scented bath bombs and sweet sugar scrubs with actual pure sugar. Room 1 sold real fruit icecream and waffles. Our gala had games, toys and clothes and lots more. Our gala was motivating and we appreciated all the love and support that we were getting. The total money we raised was $13,000. By Naomi Clair My highlight was the cross country day when we went to a farm, and we did the little kids first. And then it was my race
Friday sausage sizzles
and I came second place even though I slipped in the wet grass. We had to jump over a ditch, and run down some steep hills. Lots of parents came to watch, and after all the race we had sausages that the policeman cooked for us. By Dukie King
My highlight of the year was one day when we had to go to the Wairoa Community Centre. It was exciting even walking there, but this was only the beginning because we had a game of basketball there everyday for the next 6 months. We got in the finals, and we were doing so well until this boy got a three pointer and we lost by 1 point – darn it! By Roka-Tahi Prasad-Gilbert
Hello, my name is Rosa Gemmell. I am 11 years old and I live in Wairoa and go to St Josephs School. My highlight of the year is basketball. My coach is Tony Fearon and my team mates were Moby, Cjay, Naomi, Boh, Roka-Tahi, and Marc. Our team went pretty good. We came second in the whole of Wairoa’s school basketball competition. We played for about 6 months. I enjoyed being in a basketball team. I suggest your kids should play it too. By Rosa Gemmell
My highlight of the year was our school gala! Hi, my name is Charlie Vennell and this year our gala was great. It was a hot day and the drinks were cool and refreshing. There were paintball guns, candyfloss, lollies, sausages and loads more stuff. It was fun! We made $13,000 out of it. By Charlie Vennell
My highlight was on swimming day. We went to the swimming festival at the Community Centre. I was facing a lot of fast people! We had a lot of different people there from other schools. My Mum gave me some lollies to give me energy. It was fun and I had a good day – I won all my races! By Tamate Cavaile-Delzescaux
My highlight of the year was when Room 2 went to Camp Kaitawa for 4 days and 3 nights. I loved when we made our own dinner on our 2nd night – with silver beet and sausages and potatoes. I also loved when we went on the bush walks, we saw “Peppa Pigs puddle” and one time we went on a bush walk. I tripped in a big hole. By Peyton Jenkins

Kowhai Special School Staff: 81 Students: 105 Principal’s message Kowhai Special School is a leading specialist school in Hawkes Bay, educating 5-21 year old students who have ORS funding. Our growing school community is spread around the greater Hastings and Central Hawkes Bay districts. We have a fantastic set up that allows our students to have a supportive, inclusive education between our Base School and 11 satellite classes in local mainstream schools. This allows our students to have a supportive pathway throughout their education according to their age and ability. Come and visit us and meet our amazing tamariki and see for yourself all the opportunities that happen for students at Kowhai! Sarah Roil Principal www.kowhaispecial.school.nz Celebrating Success There are so many areas in which our students achieve success and we always enjoy celebrating with them. Recently, one of our students, Laurence Carr, received a Young Achievers’ Award for his achievements in Tae Kwon Do. He is one of a number of students who have earned the same award over the years for their expertise in different areas. Construction Projects This year, our Raureka Satellite had a custom-built sensory playground installed, which has enabled their students to get outside and interact fully with their environment. Hastings Central Satellite has also had a sandpit and scooter track installed, which the students are thoroughly enjoying. The third big construction project this year is a long-awaited Therapy office. This will hopefully be finished in time to start the new year. Therapists We are very fortunate to have a very skilled team of therapists to work with our students on a daily basis. Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech-Language Therapists and Music Therapists bring a richness and uniqueness to our programmes, ensuring our students receive all the supports they need to experience success. This year, our Speech-Language Therapists have been working with a group of students who communicate using electronic devices – “Talkers”. They produced and performed a production using their communication devices. Hopefully this is just the first of many such performances!
Pasifika In Term 3, a group of our students took part in the Pasifika Polyfest, which showcased performances from schools across Hawke’s Bay. Our students performed wonderfully and it was great to see them performing alongside their mainstream peers. TaeKwon Do and Special Olympics Many of our older students take part in TaeKwon Do lessons and work towards gaining medals and certificates. In the October holidays, some of our students competed in the International TaeKwon Do Championship, which was held in Napier. It is great to see so many of our students achieving success through TaeKwon Do. Throughout the year, there have been a range of athletics and swimming events organised by Special Olympics. Our students have participated in these events and performed well in a range of sports. RDA Once a week four of our Junior classes and some of the students from the Raureka Satellite go to RDA. The equine therapy helps them to relax and begin to use language they may not have used before, as well as strengthening their core muscles. Classroom Learning Every child in the school has an individual programme, receiving literacy and numeracy instruction at their level. It is always exciting to see the progress our students make through the tailor-made programmes we give them. We also have a growing understanding of the importance of play through the day and allow plenty of opportunities for students – particularly in the Junior School – to play, learning those important social interaction skills in the process.

proud. This experience definitely contributed to building men of valour by presenting them with role models who take action to right wrongs and put things in place to benefit future generations. WAKA AMA We started the Waka Ama year off strong, having enough interest to register not just one, but two teams in the Junior Under 19 Mens division for the Regional Secondary School Waka Ama competition. It was a first for several of our boys to not only paddle, but to also compete at a regional level on the water. Consistent
training saw our 12 young men upskilling their paddling techniques and talents, but also grown in their characters as athletes. KI O RAHI NATIONALS The 2019 Ki-o-rahi Secondary School Nationals competition was hosted by Ng-a Taonga Takaro with support from our school and held here in the Hawkes Bay. Leading up to Nationals, Ng-a taonga takoro held referee workshops to teach those who had put our hands up how to best referee. The pressure was on to do the job and to do it well.
KOHUPATIKI MARAE The boys learnt about the importance of native trees to a river ecosystem and worked along-side Whaea Aki and Matua Tom to cut back invasive weeds. They worked hard and in good spirit, doing our kura
IWL2 Our students are well into their civil infrastructure training and unit standard achievements officially known as infrastructure works level 2 (IWL2) We’ve spent several days at Te Aratika Lodge working through contract management, Health & Safety and Understanding the scope of civil works. Mt Ruapehu Ski Trip There were many benefits of the snow trip, but one that stands out was the rapidity of skill development demonstrated by our boys. Most spent a lot of the morning falling down, but they showed the tenacity and determination to keep getting up until they no longer fell. Another major was that the slopes offered a space for our boys to provide support and help to one another. Our students are demonstrating our Graduate Profile outcome of being Competent and Confident, below are a few of their achievements so far this year. HIVE MOVEMENT A student was selected by the Ministry of Youth as one of 16 young people joining the Hive Movement as national ambassadors for Biodiversity. Courtesy of Greater Than nomination. RINGA TOI EXHIBITION in Wellington. We’ve had 2 boys make the cut to have their works exhibited. YES BUSINESS AWARDS One student was a Runner Up for Business Resilience Award. 2019 Learning
Our overarching inquiry this year has been ‘What keeps us healthy?’ Term 1 - What keeps us healthy at home & school? Term 2 - What keeps our brain and body healthy? Term 3 - What keeps the environment healthy? Term 4 - What foods are healthy? In addition to work in the classroom our learning has happened out and about in the community, with visits out for swimming, hydrotherapy, making hangi, flax weaving, visits to Anderson Park and Marine Parade, visits to the Aquarium, supporting local recycling initiatives, work experience at The Leg-up Trust, a trip to the planetarium, shopping trips to the supermarket, using public transport, competitions at Omni Gym, trekking around Pandora Pond, SNAG Golf, visits to Arataki Honey and MTG. Wow! Our students have been busy.
