Kaitiakitanga

Kaitiakitanga By Chrys Ayley After you’ve eaten a fish what can you do with the leftovers such as the skin and scales? This was an issue local artist Katherine Bertram decided to explore while creating her first ever entry for WOW this year. The World of Wearable Art Awards have amazed audiences in New Zealand with their magic and ingenuity for 30 years. What began as a small local competition has grown to become WOW, a theatrical spectacle and magnet for extraordinary talent from around the world. The finals showcased garments created by 115 finalists from 22 countries and regions. Katherine was elated when her creation Kaitiakitanga eventually made it to the final and she, along with her family, husband Matthew and children Alexander, India, Ravenna and Octavia travelled to the awards evening in Wellington on Friday 27 August.

Katherine Bertram

During the day designers met from all over the world, many of them had come from a sculptural or textile industry and their expertise and methodologies clearly tapped into their backgrounds,” she says. “It was great being around such people and talking about my own practice and the making of my fish skin leather. On the day of the show I took my kids on a walk around the harbour and we were fortunate enough to see some past WOW entries wander past promoting the event, there was certainly a big buzz leading up to the awards night performance.” “The wearable art was definitely the star of the show and I was thrilled when my work came out on stage. It performed just as I had hoped and it was a great moment.” “On reflection for all the work involved it felt like it was over too quickly and I would have loved it if more people had been able to see the detail in the work up close. However, it was an amazing experience being part of a special group of 2019 WOW finalists and I can see why the other designers talked about the addiction of entering,” Katherine says. With a Fine Arts degree, a BA in Philosophy and a Masters in Teaching Katherine has explored many artistic avenues starting with print making and lithography and moving onto freehand machine embroidery, jewellery and textile work. She taught in Australia, was previously head of art at Auckland Grammar and now teaches part-time at Napier Boys High School.

It was in 2017 that daughter India entered the local Edible Fashion Awards and Katherine worked with her on a group project. India was placed first runner up in her section with The Milk Tooth Fairy, which they found very exciting. Katherine was inspired and in 2018 entered a sculptural piece in the Edible Fashion Awards which was the start of her working with fish. Her creation Many More Fish in the Sea won the Clearview Estate Adult Designer category, the Unio Goldsmith & Gallery Jewellery & Accessory category and the Supreme Award – Hastings Art & Culture Trust Designer of the Year. The win, for Katherine, was really empowering. “It’s a big thing to have your work on stage. It’s traumatic waiting for an announcement. It gave me the encouragement to fee el the skills I had could go to another level.”

Ann An nna Stretton, a judge at the awards, gave Katherine the inspiration to “follow her dream” and take her work to an nother level and enter WOW. It was the start of weekends de-scaling and marinating fish while taking over large portions of the house. She worked late nights on the porch gluing, took over the dining table and there were fish scales all over. Technically Katherine said she felt at a disadvantage as many WOW entrants are designers by trade with access to plenty of equipment and support.

The work that went into Kaitiakitanga could truly be described a labour of love as Katherine made all the material from scratch. “It was the biggest challenge. I spent maybe three quarters of the year making the materials. It was a really physical process just tanning the skins. I had to make my own tools to facilitate that and had to make sure they (the fish) didn’t smell.” She can understand why fish left overs haven’t been used creatively up till now. “The process is difficult. I’d love to be part of an enterprise that really looked at using the fish skins…. but fish are small and the process is hard, and yet you produce something beautiful that’s structurally strong.”

Preparing students for the ‘real world’ By Chrys Ayley Students looking for qualifications in hairdressing or beauty need look no further than the EIT at Taradale. This is home to Salon Elite and Refresh Beauty and Body Clinic which, not only offers a range of courses, but also opens its doors to the public so the students can have real life working experience in their chosen profession. Clare Zachan is a tutor in hairdressing, along with Trish Salmon and Courtney Cowan, while Jenny Todd tutors the one year Level 3 Certificate in Barbering Skills barbering certificate that was launched earlier this year. Clare teaches both first year and second year students and loves her job: she’s worked at EIT for eight years. “I love the light bulb moments when a student finds something difficult and then all of a sudden they crack it.”

Billie Marshall loves the course and thinks it will be a good qualification to enable her to travel overseas.

Anyone who thought hairdressing was easy should think again. The course for first year students consists of study on campus for three days a week followed by self-directed study and assignments for the remainder of the week. The students also have practical experience in the salon under close supervision of the tutors. Salon Elite is extremely well equipped and the students offer a full range of services, to those who have pre-booked, such as consultation, shampoos and scalp massages, short and long hair styling, cutting and colouring. Assessment, along with feedback is ongoing for all students. The EIT has an inhouse computer system where students can store their work and complete projects ready for marking. The end goal is to have prepared an Eportfolio to show potential employers and the tutors their best work. As students progress to the second year they have to work at least 60 hours in industry and they move onto more advanced work to have them “work or salon ready,” says Clare. Inter-personal, life and communication skills, which are so necessary for anyone working with the public, are embedded within the teaching. The third year of training sees the students working full time in a salon and they are expected to hit the ground running that is be able to go on the floor and work as a full member of the team immediately. The tutors and potential hosts work to try and ensure a good fit between the student and the ambience of the salon. There’s been a high success rate in the last few years and all the second years were taken on for third year apprenticeship. The end of the academic year sees The Grand Finale for hairdressing and barbering students who showcase their “amazing” styles with live demonstrations and on the catwalk at the EIT.

Refresh EIT Beauty and Body Clinic Paula Morris, now in her 16th year at EIT, has been the programme coordinator for hair for 18 months and beauty for three years. Equipping the students to be “work ready” is an integral aspect of the various courses, as is continuous assessment. Gaining qualifications in beauty therapy or hair styling is one of the few careers that suits those who want to travel as the skills are easily transferable overseas, Paula says.

Stryder Mclean, working on Caitlyn Isaacson’s hair, a former healthcare worker wanted a change. His study is going well and he finds the tutors and students super supportive. Caitlyn wanted to study hairdressing for many years and enjoys learning new things on the course.

Like hairdressing there’s more to beauty therapy than meets the eye. There’s quite a lot involved. For example, anatomy, physiology, how the body works etc The EIT offers three qualifications at three different levels and offers all the skills needed for a rewarding career in the beauty industry, Paula says. The L3 Certificate in Makeup and Skin Care is for one semester. The L4 NZ Certificate in Beauty Therapy is a one year course and is extremely popular with 40 students enrolled this year. The L5 NZ Diploma in Beauty Therapy is also a one year course and has 16 students enrolled this year. Depending on the course students could go on to work in retail, a beauty therapy clinic, a day spa or a cruise ship. Another career option, with extra training, is appearance medicine. “It’s a very varied career. You’re really helping people feel good about themselves. The clinic which is open to the public is run as a commercial entity real business with the end goal to have them “work ready.” Refresh is open every Tuesday during term time and there’s a roster for all the jobs: reception, manager, cleaning up and so on. “They pretty much run it themselves. They’re going to have to be organised in the real world and have to start here,” says Paula.

Paula Morris, background, is the programme coordinator for the hair and beauty courses and a senior lecturer.

Kara Ward, left, receiving some tips from hairdressing lecturer Clare Zachan who demonstrates on Paige Wilson.

Megan Woollard, a beauty student graduated at the end of 2018 and is employed full time. She is also the current Hawke’s Bay Area Representative of the NZ Association of Registered Beauty Professionals, and recently won “NZ Student of The Year” at the association awards night.

Beyond aftershave

The last few years have seen a renewed interest in men wearing facial hair, especially beards and with it has grown a new industry dedicated to pampering males. Unisex hair dressers have virtually disappeared and men can relax in more male oriented surrounding while having their hair, beard and skin attended to. The art of barbering isn’t new but is coming on in leaps and bounds again as the mighty beard once again comes into fashion. There’s a whole new range of associated beauty products such as conditioning beard oil, conditioners, beard trimmers, moustache waxes and so on. Barber shops have sprung up and the EIT also offers barbering courses which indicates this is a trend that’s here to stay. Associated rituals such as shaving and conditioning skin have seen a wealth of products launched as suitable for blokes: skin care products are quite acceptable along with moisturisers, body scrubs and lip balm. Should men wear makeup? Some do already, especially those in younger age brackets, with products like concealer and shine eliminator selling well. There’s not only after shave but fragrances for men such as eau de toilette. The number of men having muscle relaxing treatments and cosmetic surgery are also on the increase. Many men are also taking a greater interest in personal presentation beyond grooming to become more fashion conscious. Gone are the days of baggy t-shirts and shorts. Today’s men are proud to look good and spend a little more time and money in selecting comfortable yet smart attire. Jeans and chinos that fit, and more tailored clothes are in, especially for more mature men. Top them off with a jacket or well-cut blazer and perhaps a scarf and hat? For that special occasion such as a wedding or christening you can’t beat the look of a good suit. Opt for a good pair of smart, casual shoes and a decent pair of smart shoes for more formal wear.

Appearance and cosmetic medicine Make me over

Knowledge of the need to care for one’s skin begins at an early age these days with increased awareness about the effects of the sun and other habits such as smoking. As yet we can’t stop the actual process of aging but there is a lot that can be done to make you feel more confident, and look more attractive, without opting for the surgeon’s knife. There are natural, cruelty free and ecofriendly products readily available alongside a good range of cosmetic treatments on offer locally.

Pampering treatments

Manicures and pedicures are amongst the most popular treatments that have a feel good factor and also look fabulous when completed. Nail art has become especially popular and is as much a fashion statement as an outfit.

Wanting to look good isn’t just about vanity either with issues such as acne, psoriasis and spider veins causing anxiety for many.

Appearance or cosmetic medicine is a broad term for specialties that focus on improving cosmetic appearance through the treatment of conditions including scars, skin laxity, wrinkles, moles, liver spots, excess fat, cellulite, unwanted hair, skin discoloration, and spider veins. Treatments include liposuction, laser hair removal, muscle relaxants and lip enhancements.

Smile

A brilliant white smile is something many desire and these days there are many options to improve the look of teeth. They range from basic tooth whitening toothpaste to tooth replacement and other procedures undertaken by dentists.

Facials include skin care treatments for the face, including steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage. They are normally done in beauty salons, but are also a common spa treatment. They are used for general skin health as well as for specific skin conditions. Massages are especially relaxing and soon help stress melt away. There’s a huge range of options ranging from full body massages to shoulder massages and all sorts of techniques are popular including hot stones and aromatherapy. For some a massage is a regular ritual but for others an occasional luxury

Step Out in this Season’s styles

Holland Fashion Shoes Hi! I’m Kristin Hart, I am a senior stylist with almost 10 years experience and I joined Upstage in late July. I absolutely love hairdressing, making women and men feel and look good, is my passion. I absolutely love creating fun bold colours, beautiful blondes and customising styles to create stress free, manageable, beautiful hair. Absolutely love kids and male cuts also! I trained in Havelock North then moved into a salon in

239 Heretaunga Street West, Hastings

Ph: 06 878 8508

Hastings where I worked and built a positive, fun, bubbly clientele for 4.5 years. I made the hard choice to leave that salon to pursue a healthy balanced lifestyle of work, theatre and most importantly spending time with my beautiful daughter. I’m finally back on stage after a long break, and currently rehearsing for a play at Waipukurau little theatre. I hope to see some familiar faces in salon and meet some new ones.

Be well

Being active is an essential part of living a healthy life but just as eating fast food can become a habit so too can being lazy. Increasing demands on our time means it’s easy to become complacent. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle and are just starting to think about changing your habits for the better then there are lots of little things that can be incorporated into daily activities without too much effort. For example, use the stairs not the lift, take a walk at lunch time or park the car further away from the office and walk. Thirty minutes a day is recommended exercise we need. However, for those who have been inactive for a while start off with ten minutes gentle exercise and gradually increase the time in your chosen activity. Some suggestions • Sit less, move more. • Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. • Walking doesn’t cost much-just a pair of sensible shoes. • Gardening and household chores count as activity. • Try low impact activity like water aerobics. • Find a gym to suit your personality and where you don’t feel intimidated. • Try something different-Tai Chi or dancing.

• Work on managing time more effectively. • Make the time for leisure activities. • Reward yourself at the end of a stressful day-a hot bath perhaps. • Take the time to connect with friends and family. • Try to avoid unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking and too much caffeine. • Take up yoga. • Try meditation or mindfulness courses.

Stress busters • Step outside for a few minutes, take a few deep breaths and enjoy the fresh air. • Cut out things in your life that may increase stress eg reduce time on digital devices. • Get sufficient sleep.
