30 years of Art Deco celebrations
018 is a massive year for the Tremains Art Deco Festival. Not only do we once again celebrate and commemorate Napier’s unique Art Deco heritage built out of the 1931 earthquake, but we will also celebrate the Festivals own heritage as 2018 marks the 30th annual Art Deco Festival. It was in late 1988 when the Art Deco Trust was three years old, that one of the founding members came up with the idea of holding an Art Deco Weekend event. The inaugural event was held on the first weekend of February 1989. The programme was modest with only 7 events, the Vintage Car Parade had a grand total of 14 cars, and it rained, seeing the Gatsby Picnic move to the Napier Municipal Theatre stage with less than 30 people in attendance.
29 years later, the Festival has developed into a world renowned event, with over 250 events, 300 cars in the Vintage Car Parade and over 5000 people attending the Gatsby Picnic. This year the Festival will also have a special focus on music with over 200 hours of music across the five days, city with
music everywhere you turn. The feature event for this is the ‘Friday Night with the Stars’ concert, starring Moses Mackay, Esther Stephens, Debbie Harwood, Tama Wiapara and Michael Griffiths. It will also feature local up and coming talent from Project Prima Volta and some other special guests.
At its heart, the Festival is a celebration of our community and its spirit. It is a celebration of the 1931 community’s resilience, and of our community today, who we are and what makes us special. Thank you to everyone for you support over the last 30 years. Without you the Festival wouldn’t be what it is today!

FESTIVAL
Deco Fashion Secrets and Tips.
From Lee-Anne At Charleston Chic
T
hese tips will help you build an Art Deco Costume for the festival. Start with a simple dress or frock. Plain, pastel with a small floral print. A shift dress with a little sleeve or if preferred sleeveless, both are ideal, appropriate length should be below the knee. Now the most important accessory is a matching hat, in a shade to compliment the dress. A brim for shade is ideal. You may wear a cloche, which is brimless and is a tighter fit over your head. Add a lovely flower or a distinctive trim of ribbon or scarf. Attach with a hat pin on the side of the crown. Don’t forget to try hats on with your glasses to ensure a comfortable fit. Shoes can be a pale colour to match with your choice of hat. Choose a Mary Jane Style or Tee -Strap like a dance shoe with closed in toe. Ballet flat or court shoe will work perfectly as well. A lovely tip is to tie a ribbon around the instep of you foot, then slip your shoes on giving you an instant strap effect. The all important undergarments, full or a half slip in a pale shade should be worn if the fabric is see-through and also pale nude seamed pantyhose. Stockings are more authentic but you will need to wear a suspender belt. Pantyhose with a seam are manufactured and available now. Gloves are appropriate and a wonderful addition to an outfit if they are crocheted or lace in a shade to compliment your chosen accessories. I love how jewellery can add instant glam to a plain frock. It can date and transform your outfit. Jewellery is important and may really enhance your frock. You can’t go wrong with white, cream or coloured pearl beads, perhaps a long strand that can be wrapped
around your neck doubled as an alternative look. Matching earrings, a little drop is ideal, even a pearl bracelet to finish. For an authentic touch use vintage pieces from 1920s-30s, e.g. marcasite jewellery, paste, early plastic, bone or glass. The typical eyewear or sunglasses, common for this period, are usually a small round shape. Metal/tortoise shell faux rims are the most ideal. Use a parasol, it is a lovely addition for a feminine touch and sensible sun protection in our high UV light. Make up can be a simple skin tone foundation with rouged cheeks, pale eye shadow, kohl eye pencil and a shade of red for the lips, with a pale coloured finger nail polish. Your hairstyle, well depending on what type of style you have now, it may be simpler to just wear a Bob style wig to avoid having to drastically change your current style. Advice from your hairdresser will help you decide. Visit Lee-anne Freeman at Charleston Chic, 1/2 Tennyson Street, Napier for more Dressing Tips.
FESTIVAL Bertie’s Deco Secrets and Tips for Men’s attire. The all important suit. This was the number one item of clothing for the 20s-30’s man. Usually blue pin stripe, double breasted, wide bottom trousers with turn ups with buttoned fly. But for summer try Blazer and bags (trousers). Striped or plain blazer with a baggy pale trousers. If you haven’t got a blazer try a suit jacket with the pale trousers. Add a hat. Absolute necessity both for fashion and for sun protection. Trilby (fedora) with the suit. Straw boater or panama with the blazer and bags. Fashion tip - boater with the suit looks really super! Neckwear. Again a must for the smart chap about town. Bow tie or a standard tie with the suit. Cravat (ascot) with the blazer. A Cravat can also be worn with the suit but only by cads!! Don’t forget your braces clipped or buttoned to your bags are a great addition. Ideas for footwear. Brogues in an appropriate shade or two tone shoes if you have them. Canvas shoes(plimsols) were also popular with the blazer and bags.

After Five think Evening wear. Wearing a dark suit will be appropriate at most functions except where formal wear is obligatory (stipulated on the event ticket) then wear a dinner suit. Tails only at the most formal of occasions. Don’t forget black tie with dinner suit, white tie with tails. Top hat only with tails. Casual wear can be a short sleeved knitted shirt (polo shirts). Wear tucked into your high waisted, belted, baggy trousers. Panama hat or boater (flat top straw hat) A fun tip. Try a pair of plus fours with a knitted sleeveless pullover and long sleeved shirt. Top it off with a cheese cutter, flat cap or Baker Boy cap. The Sportsman look, trousers, pale or dark, tied at the waist with a striped tie. Long sleeved pale shirt, striped cravat and a cricket cap. Long sleeved cricket jumper tied casually over the shoulders. The Gangster look. Popular especially if you have a vintage American car! Black shirt, black hat, white tie, white braces. Two tone or black shoes. Can be worn with a dark double breasted suit. Accessorise with a faux cigar. Whatever you do wear, enjoy your Art Deco Festival.

Go Bus Services
Take the hassle out of getting to the festival by catching the bus. GoBay is providing additional bus services on Route 12 from Napier to Hastings, via Taradale, especially for the festival. And there’ll be buses operating until 10pm on Friday and Saturday of the festival weekend perfect if you’re planning a night out and don’t want to drive. Check out all the bus timetables and the additional services being offered at www.hbrc.govt.nz and search #bustimetables
Parking Entry to the inner city is restricted during the Art Deco Festival. However there is parking available North and South of the ‘Spirit of Napier’ with a gold coin shuttle service running to bring you into the heart of the Festival.
