Welcome to the 2018 Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction A very warm welcome to our 2018 Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction. As a member of the founding committee in 1991 it has been an absolute pleasure to see this wonderful annual event evolve over the years to this iconic auction, a major event in the New Zealand wine scene. By offering the finest, unique wines from Hawke’s Bay to our bidders, this auction has become the largest private contributor to Cranford Hospice, something we are very proud of. Thank you to our dedicated and generous wineries for their unique barrel and wine “lots”. We are delighted with this year’s extraordinary line up of auction lots, all of which are remarkable and provide bidders with plenty of
Lawyers
opportunity to walk away with very special wine parcels and experiences. Cranford Hospice has exciting, ambitious and much needed expansion plans ahead with the Chesterhope development. The whole community will benefit from the improvement of all Cranford services, so a successful 2018 auction is much needed. To all our sponsors, of which there are many, sincere thanks for the huge generosity, your contributions make this auction possible and we are grateful for your dedication. To the extremely talented David Trubridge, your world class piece will be exciting to auction, thank you.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank our auction committee, they willingly give their time and expertise. We are ably led by Elisha Milmine and Annabel Tapley-Smith whose passion, drive and skill are clearly reflected in this wonderful event… a particular thank you ladies! Finally, to our fantastic bidders, whether you are a syndicate or individuals, I hope the paddles will be waving thick and fast securing these fine wine – barrels, experiences, artwork and travel, all showcasing our world class Hawke’s Bay! Welcome from the Cranford Hospice Trust “The care of the dying demands all that we can do to enable people to live until they die.” Dame Cicely Saunders Thank you for supporting Cranford Hospice, your involvement in the 2018 Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction is sincerely appreciated. The Cranford Hospice Trust, established in July 2017 signalled a new era for the delivery of specialist palliative care services in our region. Our future success relies on our continued ability to recognise
the importance of people… He aha te mea nui o te ao?, He ta-ngata, he ta-ngata, he ta-ngata and to deliver care with skill, compassion and aroha. The 27-year association Cranford Hospice has with the Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction helps us to achieve this, and therefore you help us to achieve this by participating in this event and contributing to the almost $8,000 funding gap we face every day. In this last year we supported over 750 people and their whanau, and we are
immensely proud of the standard of care and support that we offer. Cranford Hospice has developed an extraordinary relationship with the “wine community” and its people. It is one that, like a fine wine, leaves you with something pleasant. The proceeds from the auction are wholly used as Dame Cicely intended, to deliver services to support people with life limiting illness to live whilst they are dying. WINE AUCTION ARTIST
Art Lot: David Trubridge Sculpture – The Strands of Life
Weaving has been an essential part of my vocabulary ever since I learnt to weave hats from coconut leaves in the Pacific islands. It is a timeless craft that humans have used for millennia. Recently I was in Cambodia being taught to weave rattan and bamboo by local craftspeople, and this gave me a whole lot more respect for these traditional crafts which are so sorely undervalued. This new artwork for the Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction and the Wildflower Sculpture Exhibition explores that vocabulary in new territory using a much more intransigent material, braided stainless steel wire — several kilometres of it. The weaving takes the form of a tree reaching up and branching out like a nikau or punga, suggesting the interwoven patterns of life. In the Ma-ori world weaving is used as a powerful metaphor for the lines of ancestral descent that both entwine and bifurcate, like an inverted tree. davidtrubridge.com
