Wrap up in Hawke’s Bay
2019
First with the Bay’s news
2
Add some T he Christmas table is a place of celebration where family and friends come together to share a meal and enjoy good company. Whether it’s a relaxed family barbecue or a formal lunch for a large group, a few finishing touches will make all the difference.
Choose a colour theme for your table that matches the theme you have chosen throughout the rest of the house- traditional red and green, white, silver or something more contemporary to match your artificial Christmas tree.
Brighten the table with candles, napkins, small presents, Christmas platters or a centre piece. Make your own by adding ornaments, pine cones, flowers, seasonal fruit, ribbons or garlands. Christmas baubles’ in the centre of a wreath will add a special bit of bling to your table. Living in the Bay is an opportunity to create decorations more suited to Christmas in the summer time. Why not try a natural look such as driftwood, seashells, fresh flowers or pohutukawa? Another idea is to use strands of fairy lights, a row of glass vases filled with candles on the table and glitter or stars
sprinkled on the table to create a magical atmosphere. Keep the tablecloth or table runner bright and simple to match your theme without detracting from the display you have created. Simple is often the most elegant, especially when you have large platters of food and drinks to place on the table. Napkins can be jazzed up by using clips or pins or turn rings into name cards for your table settings if you have a large group. You can make pretty napkin rings from ribbon very easily or wrap each plate with
a gold bow to add a touch of class. Kiwi Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a meal outdoors – move the table outside for an alfresco meal and dress up the table to look summery and warm. Stemless wine glasses are a good idea, or plastic, as they’re more solid and less liable to break. If you don’t want to use plastic cutlery why not head to the local op shop and buy charmingly mismatched pieces for a rustic look? Light some citronella candles to keep the insects away and pop a pot plant or fresh flowers on the table as a centre piece. Drinks can be kept chilled in a bucket full of ice.

Nourished for Nil O ver 50,000 people this year have benefited from the Hastings based not for profit organisation Nourished for Nil. This year alone they have re-distributed 580 tonnes of food to the community through what they call food rescue. This is the practice of collecting quality food that was destined for waste from places such as restaurants, grocery stores, produce markets, and supermarkets and redistributing it.
Founder and Managing Director Christina McBeth, along with her large team of volunteers, are looking forward to enjoying some Christmas cheer and making their last distribution day before Christmas a bit of a festive occasion for all their visitors. Nourished for Nil opened in February 2017 at Landmark Square but it wasn’t long before new premises were required and they moved to the current site in Karamu Road three months later. Since then they have expanded operations and storage capacity so that they now fill the whole building. Every Monday to Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 all sorts of food is distributed and on Thursday morning there is a special morning session for senior citizens and those who are disabled. Any food donations can be made from 9am3pm so it’s a pretty busy building what with 25 volunteers helping throughout
each day. There’s a team to pick up food, a processing and sorting team and another team that looks after distribution.
Christina is very keen to stress that this isn’t a food bank and that everyone is welcome to use their services. “This is for everyone, we don’t judge, we don’t discriminate,” she says. For many regular customers Nourished for Nil is not just about receiving food but part of their routine and a chance to interact socially with others. Volunteers and customers form bonds too and it’s “here that food is the great equaliser,” Christina says. Naturally the food being re-distributed varies depending on what’s in season and what’s been donated but there’s always a good range of fresh vegetables, staples, bread, cakes and sometimes even eggs. Christmas is special and the volunteers have already held their celebrations but it’s the final week that they all look forward to the most. “In the weeks before Christmas we put aside extra things like chocolate, lollies and some specialty items and give them out in the week before Christmas.”
this year. There’s a festive air as Santa visits, gives children gifts and lollies and there are a few other special treats in store. “We make a big deal out of it and it’s good to have a nice ending to the year, an official smile and send off,” Christina says.
In addition people like to donate gifts for children and these will be given out on their last distribution Friday the 20th
While they all take a break over Christmas food will still be collected “because food waste never sleeps.”

Fiona McIntosh
A spectacular illustrated picture book exploring New Zealand’s unique landscapes and its incredible wildlife by the awardwinning author of Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story.
The inspirational life story of New Zealand’s most successful rally driver, Hayden Paddon.
The new historical blockbuster by the bestselling author of The Pearl Thief.
Hayden Paddon was just a boy growing up in Geraldine – in love with driving and dreaming big. Starting with nothing, and determined to beat the odds, he set out on a phenomenal 20-year pathway to the World Rally Championship, where he footed it with the best rally drivers on the planet.
‘It won’t matter how many diamonds you find if you lose the love of your child.’
Long before waka touched Aotearoa’s shores, the land of the long white cloud was home to an array of creatures uniquely adapted to its environments and protected by its isolation. Encounter New Zealand’s incredible wildlife in this spectacular visual exploration. Journey through ocean, sky and land to meet a marvellous range of organisms. Discover fascinating facts, and learn how we influence the survival of our living treasures. In this magnificent companion volume to Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story, Gavin Bishop weaves a compelling visual narrative of our land, our people and our wildlife past, present and future. Gavin Bishop is a highly acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator of more than 60 books, whose work ranges from original stories to retellings of Maori myths, European fairy stories, and nursery rhymes. Puffin RRP $40
But it didn’t come easy. In Driven, Paddon details the many highs and lows along his road to the top. He opens up about his struggles with bullying and depression as a young man. He also goes on public record for the first time about his 2017 accident in which a spectator was killed and his controversial dismissal from the Hyundai Motorsport team in 2018. It’s the real account from Paddon himself, in his own words, as he sets the record straight about his dramatic life on and off the road.
When six-year-old Clementine Knight loses her mother to malaria during the 1870s diamond rush in southern Africa, she is left to be raised by her destitute, alcoholic father, James. Much of Clementine’s care falls to their trusty Zulu companion, Joseph One-Shoe, and the unlikely pair form an unbreakable bond. From the harsh desert of Africa’s Kimberley diamond mine to the misty, green plains of northern England, The Diamond Hunter is a breath-taking adventure story about trust and betrayal, the ultimate quest for truth, and a love that is truly priceless. Sharing Christmas T hey say that busy people always find time to take on other tasks and this is certainly true for Jo Reyngoud.
Jo says they are very generous and deliver the goods freight free. Up to $27,000 annually is spent just on groceries.
The special needs teacher and part-time counsellor spends a good time of time throughout the year coordinating the Hastings Christmas Cheer Appeal. Once run by Hastings District Council the appeal is now run under the auspices of the Flaxmere Baptist Church. Hastings District Council is still a major sponsor along with Eastern and Central Community Trust, First Light Community Foundation and Trust House.
Jo anticipates that 550-600 families in the wider Hastings district will receive parcels and gifts. This can equate to several thousand people.
This will be the ninth year Jo has coordinated the appeal so she’s got the administration well organised but it’s still a massive job coordinating recipients, food parcels, gifts and volunteers. The strength of the appeal comes down to 39 agencies in the Hastings district who, based on set criteria, nominate the families to receive the gift parcels. There could be any number of reasons people are nominated such as those suffering from a life threatening illness, victims of domestic violence or people living on their own. Agencies referring people include Bernardo’s, Plunket, the Child Cancer Foundation, the Brain Injury Association, Women’s Refuge and so on. Having applied for funding earlier in the year Jo creates a database of recipients in September and from that calculates produce required. Pak N Save, for example, is sent the shopping list in November so they can prepare for delivery in December.
The grocery parcels are “not flash” but they are nutritious and are staples to fill a pantry. They may include a few treats like a bar of chocolate. There are four sizes of parcel depending on the size of the family and the age of the children. The contents for every bag of each size are exactly the same. The Christmas Cheer Appeal is opened up to the wider community including schools and businesses. Public libraries receive donations as does Hawke’s Bay Today. There is a similar appeal in Napier which was originally established over 30-yearsago by the Daily Telegraph newspaper. A Children’s Christmas Foundation, a charity founded in 2018 by Craggy Range, provided gift sacks for 2000 children throughout Hawke’s Bay last year. The Hastings appeal received a share of these which were distributed in separate sacks along with the food parcels. This year the foundation is looking to triple their efforts and reach 6000 children across Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa, with the gifts focused on enabling kids to have a strong start to the school year.
see the goods and gifts all in one place can the enormity of the project be understood,” Jo says.
“All the gifts are delivered to one place and are packed by volunteers. It’s not until you
The agencies that nominated the families collect and distribute the gifts
Jo Reyngoud and Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazelhurst, front, with Brendon Smith, Ana Apatu and Mark Kilmister with more than 500 Christmas packages that were parcelled up in Hastings on 17 December 2018 by Mayor Hazlehurst and members of the business community.
Jo is passionate about bringing hope to people. “Even if it seems like a token at least they know someone else is thinking about them.”

Herb butters
Feta in oil
A herb butter is butter that has been mixed with fresh or dried herbs. It’s usually rolled into a log using cling film, chilled until firm and sliced and served with food such as bread, poultry and meat.
Cut feta into little squares, pop into a small jar, add a couple of sprigs of rosemary and 12 peppercorns, top with oil then seal. It not only looks pretty but looks great as part of a platter.
Soften butter at room temperature, cut or chop herbs and mix herbs into the butter.

Spice rubs generally consist of herbs, salt and brown sugar. When made place in a jar and tie with a Christmas ribbon. There are all sorts of variations including this creole rub: • ¼ cup paprika • ¼ cup garlic powder
If giving as a gift finish by wrapping in baking paper, tie with string and a homemade label.
• 2 tbsp onion powder
Try: Parsley and chive, garlic, basil, mint.
• 1 tsp white pepper
• 1 ½ tbsp freshly ground black pepper • 2 tbsp dried oregano
Flavoured oils
Fancy bottles cost next to nothing at charity shops and can be filled with a variety of attractive vegetables/herbs in oil.

Chillies and garlic oil
Place chillies and garlic in a jar and top with a good oil eg olive oil. Or thread chillies and peeled garlic onto a skewer the length to match the height of the bottle. Put skewer in bottle, fill with a good oil. Leave in a sunny spot for a few weeks so the flavours permeate the oil.
• 2 tbsp dried thyme • 1 tbsp light brown sugar • 1 tsp cayenne pepper • 1 tsp ground cumin Mix spices together then coat meat with oil. Add the spice mixture and rub in very well. Cook meat following your favourite recipe. Barbequing meat is especially suitable to bring out the flavour of the herbs and spices.

Christmas with “My favourite Christmas food is actually trifle.”
I
t’s been a year full of highlights for 17-year-old Sam Wixon who lives in Havelock North and attends Havelock North High School.
“My biggest highlight for me has been from the Young Enterprise Scheme. – Tangaroa, which My business, Te Kete o is developing an alternative to polystyrene bins for the fisheries industry was selected for the Global Kaitiakitanga Project. The project involves 14-months of mentoring from NZTE, and I went on a BizVenture trip to Thailand sponsored by SEACAPE in the last school holidays which was incredible.” At the recent Hawke’s Bay Regional YES awards Sam won three awards. His business won the award for social impact and innovation, and a National Excellence award which he’ll be presented with on December 4th at the National YES Awards. Sam also won the Hawke’s Bay Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The list of achievements continues as Sam was a UN Youth Ambassador and attended the National NZ Model United Nations. He sat on the school’s board of trustees and was selected as a member for the Hawke’s Bay Regional Debating Team and travelled to Wellington for Nationals. This Christmas Sam’s looking forward to spending Christmas with his immediate whanau at home in Havelock North.
“I really enjoy being able to spend time with my extended whanau as well. My cousins and aunties and uncles live all over Aotearoa, in Te Wai Pounamu and Te Ika a Maui. So, it is always great to spend Christmas with them when we can - there’s always a lot of laughing.”

“No matter how many times I see the first Home Alone film it always makes me laugh.
My favourite Christmas song would be “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” from the Michael Bublé album.” “My favourite Christmas food is actually a dessert, trifle. Mum makes a trifle which is sponge soaked in raspberry jelly, covered with peaches, custard and cream. I always look forward to dessert on Christmas day, and getting trifle.”

A time for “We don’t want to see the children disadvantaged at Christmas time.”
C
hristmas is a time when people are especially generous and not just with their nearest and dearest. It’s a time for compassion and donating gifts for those who may be experiencing hard times.
The Salvation Army Napier Corps is especially busy at this time of year receiving gifts, cash, food and household staples to donate to their regular clients to help them enjoy Christmas-about 120 families in all. Community Ministries Team Leader Major Stephen Wallis says the families receive parcels of food, mainly staples, and toys for the children. The food parcel will also contain a chicken and possibly a few treats like chocolate and tinned fruit. Gifts of other household products are often overlooked but are very much appreciated. Examples include washing up liquid, toilet rolls, nappies and toothbrushes, he says. Money too is an acceptable alternative as it allows them to “plug the gaps” say if there’s a shortage of tinned fruit they can go out and stock up.
Mandy Otter, front, and Sam Millar prepare for last year’s Christmas Showcase.
Appeal run by Café Ahuriri. The café provides a list of suggested content, and a box if necessary, which are then filled by donors. Stephen says that they received 400 boxes last year.
that was launched earlier this year. Countdown will be creating special Christmas hampers that can be ordered online and delivered directly to the Salvation Army.
The public and local businesses are very generous and “We are grateful for their support. Without it we couldn’t do what we do.”
While young children tend to be well catered for teenagers can be difficult to buy for and they suggest a voucher for The Warehouse or K Mart so the child can choose what they’d like.
In addition to thanking the community at large for their generosity there are plenty of volunteers needing recognition for working largely behind the scenes: sorting food, toys or working in the community garden.
Just one example of how business and the community work together is the Shoebox
Another innovation is the online foodbank www.foodbank.org.nz run by Countdown

Two hundred decorated Christmas trees will be on display.
200 or so Christmas trees with lights on display in the hall at Tait Drive. Mandy Otter is the coordinator and says that last year they had 1300 people come and enjoy the spectacle. Businesses can enter decorated trees and the people can vote on their favourite. The entry fees are a major fundraiser and go towards helping youth and families. The Showcase is a good opportunity to bring back some magic at Christmas time, to have kids eyes light up when they see the trees and for the whole family to enjoy the experience, Mandy says.

Christmas with “I’m a big fan of cheesy, ridiculous Christmas music.”
O
ne of this year’s highlights for Danica Bryant was being named a Spirit of Napier Lions Club Young Achiever. She was one of ten students selected for achieving beyond expectation in one or more fields of endeavour. Danica received her award in recognition of both her musical and academic talents.
Danica is in her final year at Napier Girls’ High School and describes herself as a singer-songwriter. “This year I was privileged enough to be the Academic Scholarship Prefect which was a fantastic opportunity that taught me a lot about team work, leadership and organisation,” she says. Next year she plans to attend Victoria University in Wellington where she’ll study for a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media Studies. Danica’s list of musical achievements this year is impressive as she was the national winner of the Who Loves Who competition organised by Play It Strange. She was also a finalist in their original song contest with her song Sugarbones.
Aramoana. Over time they’ve developed their own Christmas traditions that include uncles, aunts, grandparents and pets! Her love of music is invaluable and she’s curated the family’s Christmas music playlist for the last five years. “I love that Christmas is such a fun and relaxing way to end the year and it has such an exciting energy. I’m a big fan of cheesy, ridiculous Christmas music: the more obnoxious and goofy, the better.” “I’m not one for traditional carols, but songs like Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime, White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes and Queen’s Thank God it’s Christmas have my heart. Not to mention the world’s most unconventional Christmas song Fairytale of New York which is definitely only acceptable very late on the night of the 25th.” “Christmas lights and decorations are also a particularly magical part of the Christmas experience. Dressing up in red and green and throwing tinsel everywhere is what really puts everybody in the holiday spirit.”
She’s performed as opening act for many talented acts in 2019 and attended a song writing workshop with Bic Runga in July. “My time at the workshop was truly invaluable to my growth as a writer and artist.”
Christmas dinner is also an important tradition in their household. “We squash up every table and chair we own to fit everyone together, so we can all pop crackers and recite bad jokes with the colourful paper crowns on our head. We eat a Kiwi barbeque alongside classics like stuffing and Nana’s Christmas cake.”
chocolate with far too many marshmallows in it. “And it’s certainly not a strictly Christmas meal, but eggs and bacon for breakfast is the best way to start Christmas Day.”
Christmas is time for Danica to spend time with her extended family in Shoal Bay,
As far as Danica is concerned Christmas isn’t Christmas if she doesn’t have a hot
There are plenty of other family traditions such as surprise DVD gifts, many of

Scrambled eggs and
Eton mess
Ingredients
Method
• 1 small jam-filled Swiss roll, sliced
• 4 eggs
Whisk the eggs, milk, salt, pepper and chives together.
• 450g strawberries, hulled
salmon
• 2 tablespoons milk or crème fraiche
trifle
• Seeds from 1 split vanilla pod (save the pod for the coulis, below)
• Cooking oil
Heat oil in a pan on high. Reduce heat and pour in egg mixture, scrape occasionally until just set. Stir gently.
• Tasty bread eg sourdough
Make the toast
• 500ml double cream
• 4 slices smoked salmon
Arrange all the ingredients on the toast.
• 150ml natural full-fat yoghurt
• Salt & pepper to taste
Garnish with chives
• 16 ready-made mini meringues (or use 8 larger meringues broken into pieces)
• 1 tablespoon chopped chives
• Lemon juice
• 2 tbsp icing sugar
• 1 tbsp toasted flaked almond
• Optional avocado sliced or smashed
For the coulis • 140g strawberries, chopped • 2 tbsp golden caster sugar
in half to line the edge of the bowl and place them, cut-side facing out, on top of the Swiss roll layer. Save about 8 nice strawberries for the top of the trifle, slice the remaining ones and mix with 2 tbsp of the coulis. Add the vanilla seeds and icing sugar to the cream and softly whip. Fold in the yogurt and ripple through the strawberry coulis. Tip half the cream into the trifle bowl, add the sliced strawberries, then half the meringues. Spoon in the remaining cream. Slice the remaining strawberries into halves or quarters and pop these on top with the remaining meringues and the flaked almonds. Serve immediately, before the meringues start to dissolve.
• 1 vanilla pod • 100ml sweet sherry Make the coulis. Put all the ingredients in a pan, bring to a simmer and bubble for a few mins until the sugar has dissolved and the strawberries start to soften. Remove the vanilla pod and tip the strawberries into a blender or food processor. Whizz until smooth, then sieve into a bowl to remove the seeds. Leave to cool. You’ll need a large trifle bowl or shallow dish to assemble the trifle. Arrange the Swiss roll slices on the sides and bottom of the bowl and drizzle over about 4 tbsp of the coulis. Cut enough strawberries

Beef
Wellington
Prep: 45 mins Cook: 30 mins + resting time Serves 4-6
Ingredients • Beef: 750 - 800g Quality Mark eye fillet • Spinach and mushroom filling • 12 large spinach leaves, blanched and patted dry using kitchen paper • 500g mushrooms, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped
Pastry • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • 400g frozen puff pastry, thawed • 1 egg, lightly beaten with a pinch of salt to make an egg wash
Method Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Beef: Heat a large frying pan over a high heat. Rub some oil and freshly ground pepper over the beef and brown on all sides. Sprinkle with a little salt and set aside on a large plate to cool.
Spinach and mushroom filling: Wipe frying pan with kitchen paper if necessary. Add the finely chopped
mushrooms and cook, stirring regularly until all the water from the mushrooms has evaporated. Stir through the chopped herbs and season with pepper. Set aside to cool.
Pastry: Spread the Dijon mustard evenly over browned beef. Place a piece of plastic wrap on the bench top and lay spinach leaves evenly over the plastic wrap. Then spread the mushroom mixture evenly over the spinach. Place the beef in the middle and using the plastic wrap to help you, roll
up tightly. Place in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. On a lightly floured bench top, roll out the pastry large enough to fit around the meat. Brush egg wash over the edges, remove plastic wrap from the beef and place beef in the middle of the pastry. Cut out 4 corners from the pastry (this will be excess pastry once you fold), but being careful not to cut away too much, then fold the pastry over to completely enclose the beef, and turn over. Line a shallow roasting dish with some oil spray and place in the beef Wellington. Brush pastry well
with egg wash. Score the top of the pastry with a small sharp knife, then place in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to set the pastry. Remove from the refrigerator, brush once more with egg wash and sprinkle with a little flaky salt. Place in the oven and cook for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
To serve: Serve with steamed green vegetables and gravy. Courtesy recipes.co.nz

Christmas with L aura will be well known to many people in Hawke’s Bay as she is the Director of MTG Hawke’s Bay. Readers of Hawke’s Bay Today will be especially familiar with her as she regularly writes a column on activities at the MTG.
This year will be a little different for Laura as she will be spending it in Hawke’s Bay with family rather than in Auckland with wider family. “This year it will be a fairly quiet Christmas spent with my two sons, my brother and sister-in-law and their dog Rossi.” In many respects Laura’s Christmas is quite traditional and she especially enjoys how relaxed and friendly people are over the festive season. “But I hate seeing people stressed and putting too much financial pressure and burden on themselves. I find presents unimportant and treasure the time with people,” she says. “I do love shiny decorations, twinkly lights and a beautiful Christmas tree!” A typical Christmas would include Laura and her sons watching a movie together on Christmas Eve. “We had lots of other traditions when they were younger but it’s pretty simple now.” Then on Christmas Day itself they enjoy a leisurely morning and then usually join family for lunch and the rest of the day. Decorating the tree is done as a family and the Christmas Day host assigns things for
everyone to bring so no-one is stuck in the kitchen all day. In terms of food and liquid refreshment favourites Laura loves ham on the bone and a variety of salads together with a glass of bubbles. “Someone in the family usually makes a pavlova.” Traditional games aren’t on the ‘to do’ list but Laura likes to watch a couple of favourite movies: Love Actually and It’s a Wonderful Life. She also enjoys a few classic pieces of Christmas music such as Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and John Lennon’s So this is Christmas. Laura was in Antarctica for Christmas in 1990 or 1991 and there are no trees there. “I was disappointed not to be able to decorate a tree and, while I was working, a friend made me a small freestanding cardboard tree and coloured it green with crayon. It is one of my favourite gifts ever!”

Have a pawsome M ost families own a cat or a dog or some other furry creature like a rabbit or guinea pig and it’s nice to be able to treat them at Christmas they are part of the family after all!
Contemporary trends include giving your pet a Christmas stocking full of little treats from the pet store, dressing them in a bow tie, a colourful ribbon or a Christmas hat. For those who send cards or electronic greetings it’s a nice idea to include your pets in the family photo too. While humans tend to overindulge in food and beverages there are certain foods that are hazardous or toxic for pets. The best rule is not to feed them human food and avoid bones. Chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, currants and sultanas, along with Christmas cake, mince pies and chocolate raisins are a definite NO NO. Be careful not to leave food where they can be tempted to nibble-that might be in rubbish bins, the kitchen or the dinner table when no one’s looking. Not all pets are sociable and it’s easy to be frightened by new people, crowds and noise so always make sure there is a quiet place for your animals to retreat to. Seeing kittens playing with Christmas trees is adorable to watch but kittens and puppies can wreak havoc if they decide
to climb or play with a tree. So make sure your tree and its ornaments are secure and will not topple.
If you are considering buying a new pet at Christmas make sure you think it through. Christmas is busy and not the best time to introduce a new member to the household. They’re cute but can you afford it and do you have the time to attend to a pet? Perhaps it’s a surprise that could wait until the festivities are over and the family settled? Children often tend to neglect pets once the initial excitement has worn off.
Care for your pets this summer Getting overheated can cause heatstroke which could ultimately lead to the death of your pet. The old, overweight and those with medical conditions are more likely to suffer heatstroke. Avoid the hottest part of the day and take your dog for a walk in either the early morning or in the early evening. It’s a message we often hear but every summer there are cases of animals suffering and even dying from being locked in hot cars. Never leave your dog alone in your vehicle or on the back of a ute. Even if the windows are open or you park in the shade an animal can soon overheat. Make sure your pets have plenty of shade and clean, fresh drinking water.

Have a crafty C hristmas is a special time for all but especially children who wait excitedly for Santa to arrive. In the lead up to Christmas why not get them involved in making decorations for the house and tree?
There are generally plenty of bits and pieces around the home without necessarily having to buy things specially. Cardboard and plastic can be recycled into Christmas trees or alphabet ornaments. Ice block sticks also make attractive tree ornaments. It’s easy to stick them together, paint, add glitter and make a beautiful star tree topper. Cardboard tubes can be crafted into dainty ornaments or even made into a contemporary Advent calendar. Christmas cards made especially by children are wonderful keepsakes and are
very easy for them to make. Paper, felt tip pens, perhaps some glitter and they have all the materials to keep them busy and create a future masterpiece. Another idea is to have them dip their fingers or thumbs in paint then press to paper which is also a nice keepsake. Salt dough ornaments are as popular as ever and can be cut to shape, painted and even used as a hand print keepsake for the tree. Try snowmen, trees and gingerbread people. Here’s a quick recipe: ½cup salt, ½ cup water, 1 cup flour. Mix salt and flour in a bowl. Slowly add the water. Roll out and make shapes. Microwave for up to 3 minutes in total- zap for 10 seconds at a time. Paint/decorate and hang on the tree.
Treat someone or treat yourself with delicious new relishes and vinaigrette’s from The Pantry Shop. A wide selection for everyone’s taste buds. Create your own gift basket or they’ll make one up for you.

Dinosaur Hunter

The Giver of Stars
Phoebe Morris & David Hill The remarkable true story of science superstar Joan Wiffen, whose fossil discoveries proved that dinosaurs lived in ancient New Zealand.
(Jack Reacher 24) Lee Child
Jojo Moyes The brand-new standalone novel from the Number One bestselling author of Me Before You, After You and Still Me.
Once there was a clever girl who liked searching for interesting things on the ground. She wanted to know why shells could be found in rocks so far away from the sea. But her father thought education was no use to a girl, so Joan had to leave school. Many years later, she bought an old map. To her amazement, she saw that it marked a treasure hoard. Not of gold and jewels, but of dinosaur bones. Nobody had ever found dinosaur fossils in New Zealand before – in fact, top scientists had said it was impossible. But Joan was intrigued. She decided to learn everything she could about palaeontology and hunt for these dinosaur fossils. This is the fifth picture book in an acclaimed series of true stories about the lives of famous Kiwis written by David Hill and magnificently illustrated by Phoebe Morris. Picture Puffin $25
Jack Reacher is a former military cop, trained to notice things. He’s on a Greyhound bus, watching an elderly man sleeping in his seat, with a fat envelope of cash hanging out of his pocket. Another passenger is watching too ... obviously hoping to get rich quick. When the mugger finally makes his move, Reacher rides to the rescue. The old man is grateful, yet he turns down Reacher’s offer to help him home. He’s vulnerable, scared, and clearly in big, big trouble. Elsewhere in the city, two ruthless rival criminal gangs, one Albanian, the other Ukrainian, are competing for control. Do they have a life-and-death hold on the old guy? Will Reacher sit back and let bad things happen? Or can he twist the situation to everyone’s benefit?
Inspired by a remarkable true story, the unforgettable journey of five extraordinary women living in extraordinary and perilous times. Alice Wright has travelled halfway across the world to escape her stifling life in England. Handsome American businessman Bennett Van Cleve represents a fresh start. But she soon realises that swapping the twitching curtains of suburbia for newlywed life in the wild mountains of Kentucky isn’t the answer to her prayers. But maybe meeting Margery O’Hara is. The heart and backbone of the small community of Salt Lick, a woman who isn’t afraid of anything or anyone, Margery is on a mission.
The odds are better with Reacher involved. That’s for damn sure.
A love letter to the power of books and literature and their ability to bring us together and deliver the truth, as well as a tribute to female friendship, The Giver of Stars is the book that Jojo Moyes was born to write.
