f it’s one thing you can be sure of, trends never stand still. We asked the experts to give us a taste of what’s trending for 2018.

Maximalism

Forget minimalism and its constraints. Make a move towards maximalism – one of the hottest styles in interior design. A blend of historical design and colours, layers and textures, and mixed artwork allows the maximalist to create an interior that not only melds the patina of time with contemporary decor, but creates an interior that is vastly unique. “Maximalism allows you to let your imagination loose,” says Rebecca Long, Resene Colour Expert. “The key here is to connect the dots and play close attention to design elements, such as repetition and shape, to build your scheme.”

Grounded neutrals

Earthier, honest neutrals are right on trend. Choose a colour palette of earthy

browns, tans, warm greys and greens – and especially terracotta. “Terracotta is making a comeback and it isn’t just limited to pots,” says Rebecca. “Pair colours such as Resene Entourage and Resene Desperado with classic timber stains such as Resene Pitch Black and Resene Natural.”

Metallics

“Yes, we are still using metallic, but with an earthier twist,” says interior designer and colour consultant Debbie Abercrombie. “The mix of black and metallic, such as Resene Catch 22, is strong, elegant and very on trend. Though it is stylish enough to outstand trends too.” Whether it’s stools, chairs, wall units and planters painted in metallic hues, or simple metallic touches added to handles and legs, picture frames, textiles and wallpaper – metallics are a versatile choice. Use metallics to glam up a room, or pair them with handcrafted ornaments, natural stone or exotic wood.

Daringly dark

There is a definite shift to embracing darker hues inside, taking cosy to a new level. This isn’t an all black story; instead it focuses on dark colours with deep blues and greens and smoky charcoals, such as Resene Indian Ink and Resene Coast. Dark walls ensure a space doesn’t feel empty. The deep backdrop enhances the greenery of plants and colours in artwork.

Botanicals

We’re not ready to let go of botanicals just yet. We’re still seeing bold-leafed plants in our homes, in particular ‘patterned’ plants with leaves bearing stripes or splotches. Nature’s green hues are prominent too. We’re also seeing the blues – from deep and dark to weathered blues. So easy to incorporate into a project, blues continue as a perennial favourite.

Statement ceilings

2018 is looking up – at least, as far as ceilings go. Often referred to as the ‘fifth’ wall, whether you choose to paint it, wallpaper it, or apply interesting textures to it, decorating the ceiling is a striking way to revamp a room from top to bottom. Darker colours create a cocooning effect by giving the perception that a ceiling is lower than it actually is. If you’re concerned about ‘lowering’ the room height, avoid painting the edges of the ceiling, and bring the wall colour up over the cornices. Using a matte finish, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat, will accentuate the depth of darker colours.

Recycling

Using recycled materials and upcycled objects is not just a trend, it’s becoming a responsibility. Paint, stain and clear finishes are an easy way to help repurpose or reuse a favourite piece of furniture or accessory. Old

Enjoy your personal outdoor space

ove them or hate them lawns are a permanent fixture for the majority of home owners. While some take enormous pride in keeping a nicely cut, weed free lawn others find it a tedious chore that wastes valuable leisure time. Fortunately there are alternatives for those who like to have a low maintenance garden. Covering the lawn with a layer of paving is perhaps a bit drastic but with some thought, maybe some help from an expert, you could come up with an attractive, usable and attractive garden with a small lawn or ground cover alternative. As with most chores having a plan is recommended if undertaking major work in the garden. Establishing a new garden takes many years and some foresight to envisage how plants and shrubs might mature over time. Think about how you use the space, do you need outdoor space for entertaining, a deck or patio? Will you be growing

your own fruit and vegetables? If so where’s the best spot to establish a vege garden? If new to an area take the time to become familiar with the annual sun pattern so all plantings can suit the season, the sun and the soil type. Consider how much frost is likely and the type of plants that can withstand the extremes of the Hawke’s Bay climate. Given the drought conditions we often face installing irrigation could be an option. These range from hose soakers to more ambitious systems that are laid in the soil and often work on a timer. How much time will you dedicate to your garden? Would it be best to plant perennial flowers (flower every year and die down in winter) of start afresh every spring with annuals that last just a season? Privacy is an issue for many so you might consider fences, decorative walls, trees or screens to be able to relax

A landscape to exceed your expectations

The heart of your home

atch any home renovation or home purchase programme on TV and you are bound to conclude that for most people a large and contemporary kitchen is top of the wish list. They have transformed from small, confined spaces to larger areas often incorporated within a family dining and living space. This is more than a trend, rather the norm, with island benches incorporating breakfast bars and plenty of space for storage and entertaining guests. Another trend in new home builds is the addition of a scullery with separate preparation, washing up and storage facilities. For those able to have a new kitchen designed and installed there are plenty of excellent kitchen experts throughout the Bay. Others might look at a cost effective facelift or partial re-modelling. hardware stores also offer kitchen packs, DIY kitchens and often kitchen consultancy services. Black kitchen benches are becoming a popular alternative to granite or granite look alike benches. There’s a really huge range of bench top materials and colours from natural stone to very realistic looking laminates. Splashbacks and subway tiles are still on trend but there are signs that tile fashions are slowly changing with the addition of Mediterranean style patterns. The range of splashbacks is increasing beyond solid colours and different textures like mirrors and stone. Induction cooktops and steaming draws along with several ovens and integrated appliances are becoming the norm as are clever storage solutions. With technology changing rapidly the range of extras available in your new kitchen is ever expanding. Soft close draws are quite common as are

cupboards with no handles that open with the touch of a knee. Touchless taps are also available which makes sense when working in the kitchen. These taps are just the start of smart kitchens. White butler (or Belfast) sinks have been popular for a long while but now we are seeing coloured sinks appearing, particularly black which looks dramatic, especially if accompanied with black or contrasting gold taps. Stylish dream kitchen

olin and Sheila Hurst are delighted with their new look kitchen which was recently installed in their Havelock North home by Kelvin Hall of Dream Doors Hawke’s Bay. The before and after photos say it all, what a transformation from a dark, old-fashioned and worn kitchen to a light, bright, functional and stylish kitchen. It was Colin who first saw the Dream Doors advertisement and the couple thought it would be the perfect solution to give their kitchen a facelift. The work was completed about a month ago and while Sheila admits she had a few qualms about the potential disruption they were unfounded. When asked when the job would be completed kelvin replied that it would be finished when Colin and Sheila were completely happy with it. Colin had every confidence in Kelvin and knew he was going to be good at his job. The price was good, the installation

date just five weeks out with good planning the job only took 2½ days. The shape and basic structure of the kitchen is the same and Kevin replaced doors, added new handles and installed the new bench tops. A few improvements were made such as replacing the pantry bi-fold doors and simplifying access to a corner cupboard. The couple arranged through Kelvin to have a new sink and gas hob installed at the same time and everything worked like clockwork. There’s a massive choice of door styles and finishes to choose from and about 200 handles, Colin says. They selected a laser edged melamine that is easy to wipe down. They found it difficult to select the new bench tops so Kelvin arranged for them to visit the local supplier and personally inspect the choices. They settled for a realistic granite look Arctic Ice laminate. “Kevin has done a tremendous job and he’s a really personable guy.” He

is a tidy worker and “I would definitely recommend him in terms of quality.” “Everything happened on time and on schedule. It just all happened. We’re very pleased with it.”

nce merely a room in which to attend to daily ablutions bathrooms have evolved from ordinary to extraordinary. Along with kitchens they have become an element in which to indulge and pamper. When selling a house the appearance of bathroom, just like kitchens, is often a key factor in a buyers decision making process. Baths and basins that make a statement are on trend. Modern baths, in particular, are designed to make a statement and are often freestanding and star of a new bathroom. A new era in lighting

othing can alter the mood of a home so quickly as lighting. The days are long gone when a light fitting and shade were merely functional. These days there is so much choice when it comes to light fittings, means of lighting and light bulbs that it can be a bit daunting. Choosing the right bulb

trip to buy a lightbulb can be confusing these days because incandescent bulbs are being phased out for more energy efficient, but more expensive, light bulbs. For those needing a new bulb it would pay to know what you’re looking for before going to the store and getting confused. The other thing to do is check the fitting before you buy-your old bulb will likely either be a bayonet fitting, or a screw fitting. Incandescent bulbs or old fashioned bulbs are not very energy efficient and much of the energy generated is lost as heat. Halogen bulbs are more efficient than incandescent bulbs but less efficient than CFL or LEDs. CFL, or Compact Fluorescent, bulbs are 75% more efficient than Incandescent bulbs. LED or light emitting diodes are by far the most energy efficient: 90% more

than incandescent. They last much longer too, possibly for decades. These days light output is measured in lumens rather than watts. For example a 60 watt bulb would equate to 700+ lumens. You’ll also have a choice on the colour of the light. An incandescent bulb is about 2,700k (Kelvin scale) and the colour of the sun at noon is 5000k. Match the k to the light effect you desire. In simple terms the higher the number the brighter the light. The box will usually give an indication as to the colour, for example warm white. With the new technology comes an opportunity to further enhance the look and feel of your home whether you’re searching for colour changing wifi light bulbs complete with app or a bulb for your bedside lamp. Note: installing wiring and other electrical work is highly specialised and needs to be conducted by qualified professionals. NZ Electricity Safety

ool carpet was very in vogue 15- 20 years ago, with very few synthetic carpets available. The tables have turned with synthetic carpets being far more popular than wool. Advances in carpet technology have led to the development of synthetic materials that are hardwearing and easy to clean. In Hawke’s Bay we have fierce sun, pets, kids and plenty of indoor/outdoor living so householders need floor coverings that will survive all that, and not stain or fade. The best-selling carpets are 100% solution dyed nylon with a cut pile that is very practical and hardwearing. Designs with flecks are especially popular. Spills of liquids and food are easy to remove, unlike the properties of wool carpets. Solution dyed nylon has another

advantage as the colours will not fade in direct sunlight. There are all sorts of synthetic carpets such as yarn dyed nylon/polyester and triexta. More affordable products are generally made from polypropylene. But, there is still a market for wool carpets with plenty of choice. One particularly top end product that’s beautifully soft is a carpet made from Merino wool. Wool does have plenty of benefits: it is fire resistant and naturally regulates moisture. Don’t forget to allow for carpet underlay in your budget. Just like carpet there is a good selection at various thicknesses and density. A quality underlay can make all the difference to the overall feel of your carpet and provide extra insulation. In hard flooring there’s been a massive trending away from ceramics to plank flooring such as laminate that look like wood but don’t cost as much. In the

last few years engineered timber floors have become quite popular which means there are no issues with buckling or warping and they are very durable, along with timber being a natural insulator. Engineered timber includes flooring products that have two layers of backing to limit warping and splitting. Bamboo is an option for those looking for a hard wood that is incredibly hard wearing and extremely robust. Cork floors, considered old-fashioned until recently, are also making a comeback. Cork is a natural product – it’s the bark of a tree so it’s also sustainable. The advantages are that cork is hard wearing, warm and tough. It is possible to have old cork tiles restored.

The choice of vinyl flooring products is extensive ranging from rolls of vinyl, to sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles. Vinyl is a sensible choice for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Grey is a popular colour as is polished concrete look vinyl, the timber look and the tile look. Just as there’s a tremendous range of colours and finishes there’s a variety of adhesion methods including direct stick, loose lay and floating click flooring. A common trend is for families to lay hard wearing sheet vinyl in a heavy traffic room like a family room yet retain wall to wall carpet in the lounge. It’s easy to add a splash of colour and warmth by adding a rug on top of the vinyl during winter. Polished concrete has been popular for several years. It can be stained and sealed and be given a pebble look. Older homes often have a concrete base which can also be ground and polished.

Understand how carpets and floor coverings are sold

Carpets are sold by a lineal metre which is generally 1metre long and 3.66 metres wide. To convert to square metres divide

by 3.66. Most other flooring is sold by the square metre. Retailers offer plenty of advice and most have free measure and quote services and floor area calculators.

indow furnishings are not new, far from it, as they have been around for thousands of years. Cave men didn’t have the benefit of textiles or glass so they used animal hides to keep out wind and the cold. Fast forward to 2018 and we a wonderful selection of fabrics, natural and synthetic, from which to choose and curtains are only one option to decorate your windows. Your choice of window treatment will depend on several factors such as budget, lifestyle, whether you need privacy or to block out the sun. Choose from blinds- roller blinds, venetian blinds, vertical blinds or Roman blinds. Timber or timber look venetian blinds are still popular and vertical blinds are also enjoying something of a revival. When it comes to curtains there are several options such as buying ready made, having them custom made or making them yourself. Even if you buy ready made curtains there are companies who will adjust or alter to suit your preferences.

The first step is to carefully measure the window or if you are using a specialist they will do all the measuring for you. There’s plenty of good advice on the internet to help you calculate the size of curtains needed to fit your window. Another consideration is the style of heading you’d prefer. Eyelet curtains are popular as they simply pop on a pole and are easy to hang. Then there are plenty of options with all sorts of pleats and headings. The colour of your curtains or blinds needs consideration too that is if you’d like a coordinated colour scheme in your rooms. Choices include going for something neutral, selecting a fabric with similar tones or going for complimentary colours. Linings add thermal effectiveness but there are also curtains/fabrics that can be purchased with lining incorporated. One disadvantage of these is that they do not respond well to washing. When selecting any curtain fabric check the cleaning instructions. In general it’s best to have them professionally dry cleaned or contact a household cleaning specialist.

Windows and energy efficiency

ell-installed curtains and blinds can help to reduce heat loss through your windows. ‘Sealing’ the curtain or blind, stopping air movement between the window and the room, is much more important than the material it is made from. Open curtains and blinds during the day and close them just before it gets dark to allow your house to gain heat from the sun during the day, and better retain it overnight. In summer, close curtains and blinds on the side facing the sun and open windows to help keep your home cool.

Tips for curtains

To provide good insulation your curtains should: • Be floor-length and touch the floor, or have pelmets above them with only a minimal air-gap between the top of the curtain and the pelmet (sill-length curtains are ineffective).

• Fit tightly against the wall or window frame. • Be wider than the window frame. • Preferably be double layered with a thick lining. • Net-curtains installed very close to the window, and in contact with the window frame, can be effective too.

Tips for blinds

To provide good insulation, your blinds should have a snug fit with the window frame, creating a good seal to trap the air in the gap between them and the window (if there are gaps around the blinds, their thermal effect will be minimal). Specifically designed thermal blinds (sometimes described as ‘honeycomb’ or ‘cellular’ blinds) may provide additional insulation, but only if they can be installed without any gaps around them – which is hard to achieve in practice.

ust like other home decoration trends there has been something of a revolution in tiles. There’s so much choice that buyers may have a hard time selecting the prefect tile for the job. They come in all shapes and sizes and are suitable to use in kitchens, bathrooms, entranceways, outdoors or even as a fireplace surrounds. Finishes are varied and include gloss, matt, polished and non-slip. In the kitchen they can be used as counter tops, backsplashes and on the floor. White and black subway tiles have been on trend for quite a while although there are signs that bright colours are making a comeback. Choose from 3D tiles, the concrete look, metallic tiles for a bit of bling and even wood look tiles! On trend right now are Moroccan

style tiles that certainly make a statement and would be attractive as a feature wall, especially in the bathroom. Shapes range from traditional square or rectangle to hexagons, octagons, diamonds, fish scales and chevrons. These days it’s easy to transform plain into stylish with some artful placement of plain and fancy tiles to compliment each other. With low maintenance gardens popular so too is laying tiles to make paths, patios and pool surrounds. Garden centres have a great selection from which to choose. Removing old tiles or vinyl flooring can be tedious and time consuming. Most companies engaged to lay new materials will quote to remove the old tiles or vinyl. While there are plenty of do it yourself guidelines available laying tiles can be a complex job that should be left to the experts.
