Sheofferslinedancinganddance fitnessclassesinTaradaleandalsoruns acombinationofthetwoinHastings onceaweek.Eachofherclassesare differentlevelsandsheadjuststhe routinestosuittheattendees. “I’masfitasanything,abitcrazy,and myclassisfullon.Ipushthemhard,but theykeepgoingandmostwomenwill goattheirownpace.”Shehasseveral ladiesthatattendbutjustwatchthe actionandenjoythesocialsideofthe gatherings.Classesareopentoboth menandwomenandtherehavebeena fewmentakingpartovertheyears. NewlyelectedPresidentoftheHawke’sBay OrchidSocietyStephenGerbaulthasbeen amemberofthelocalorchidclubforalmost 50years!Backin1974heattendedatalkabout orchidsandthatwasit,hewashooked!Needless tosay,thatafterfivedecadesheis“reasonably knowledgeable”andhasgrownmanyorchidssince then.
TheHawke’sBayOrchidSocietyhasroughly50 membersandarealliedwiththeOrchidCouncil ofNewZealand,afederationofindependent, autonomous,orchidsocietiesthroughoutNew Zealand.
Meetingsareheldmonthlyandnormally3035peopleattend.Membersaregenerallyolder althoughtherearesomeyoungermembers too.Membersbringtheirorchidstodisplayand thentheyvoteonseveralclasses:species,open, cymbidiumandthere’sanovicetable.
Partoftheappealofgrowingisforothersto appreciatetheorchid.There’susuallyatalk, possiblyavideoandanawardforthe‘BestCulture’cleanleaves,flowersetc.Occasionallytherewillbe apracticaldemonstrationsuchashowtore-pot. Themeetingfinisheswithacupofteaandachat.
