Theconceptfor apublication focussingonbusinesssuccess inHawke’sBaywassomething plannedlatelastyear.Preparationto featurebusinesssuccessstories was well underway whenCycloneGabrielle struckthe region.

We delayedthepublicationinorder toacknowledgetheimpactofthe cycloneandaddresstheway forward, especiallyforbusinesses.

Aweathereventofsuchenormity will not beforgottenquickly,ifatall, andmanyinourcommunityarestill strugglingwithdamagetocrops,houses andlivestock.

Butamidstthedevastationthere have beensomeinspirationalstories ofcourageandheroics-something whichmakesusallproudtobe apartof Hawke’sBay.It’sattimesofneedthat thecommunityralliestogetherforthe commongood.

As aresilientcommunity we can lookand reflectonachievementsofthe pastand re-buildingHawke’sBayin 2023.

We soughtcommentfromeachofthe councilsandaskedwhatwasplannedto helpbusinessesrecoverfromtheimpact ofCycloneGabrielle.

Wairoa

Iadmirethestrength ofourWairoa businesseswhicharesufferinginthe wakeofCycloneGabriellesaysMayor Craig Little.

Morethan30businesseswere physicallyaffectedbyfloodwaters, otherswereclosedwhilecommunication andelectricitywere down.Plus,now Wairoahaslostitsthrough-trafficdueto theclosureofSH2between Wairoaand Napier.

The WairoaMayoralReliefFundis nowopenforapplicationsandincludes supportingpeopleinbusinesswho wereaffectedbyCycloneGabrielle. Councilhaspartneredwiththe Wairoa YoungAchievers Trusttooffer amain streetcommunityhubtosupport peopletosourceandapplyfor arange offunding.Councilhasalsoassisted affectedbusinessesandhomeowners withthe removalofsiltandflood

damagedfurniture andmaterialsand issupportingallratepayersaffectedby floodingwithoptionsaroundthelate paymentofratesduetotheimpactof CycloneGabrielle.

Localbusinesseshavealsobeen encouragedtoapplytotheHawke’s BayCycloneandFloodRecoveryGrant throughtheHawkesBayChamberof Commerce.

Iwouldalsoliketoacknowledge theworkoflocalbusinesses,which inthewakeofCyclone Gabrielle, have refreshedthe WairoaBusiness Association,withthelaunchofKapai Wairoa.

Fromtheimmediate responseto the recoveryplanningprocess,Napier CityCouncilstaffandcontractorshave been,andcontinuetobe,dedicated tosupportinglocalcommunitiesand businessesthroughthedevastating impactsofCycloneGabrielle.

Council’scurrentpriorityisthose flood-affectedbusinessesin Awatoto whereitisworkinginconjunction withthebusinessesto restore‘Business asUsual’assoonaspossible,whilst keepinghealthandsafetytopofmind.

NapierCityCouncilEconomic DevelopmentManager,BillRoberts, saysCouncilistalkingtolocal businessestoensurethattheyare supportedintheshorttermthroughthe

variousavailablefunds,andthattheir voiceisheardatanationallevel.

Whilenotnecessarilydirectly engagingwithbusinessestosupport them,almosteverythingHastings DistrictCouncilisdoingtoassistthe community recoverfromthiseventhas flow-onaffectsforourlocalbusinesses.

Thisincludestargetedservices suchasflood-damagedwasteandsilt removal,whichisbeingcarriedoutfreeof-charge,aswellascoreactivitiessuch as roading.

Thereare morethan80crews workingaroundthedistrict repairing and restoringthe roadsthatprovide vitalconnectionsforourcommunity andprimaryindustry. Teamshavealso beeninvestigating,monitoringand repairingthethreewatersnetworks,

andmakingthelandfilloperational,and tradewasteisbeingtakenfromNapier totheClivewastewatertreatmentplant whiletheirsisnotoperational.

CouncilworkedwiththeHawke’s BayFarmersMarkettomakeCivic Squarea temporarylocationwhilethe TmoanaShowgroundswasbeingused asanemergencyfoodandsupplies distributionhub.AndCouncilhasalso offeredtheservicesofitseconomic developmentteamwhoareavailableto givebusinessesadvicetohelpwiththeir economic recovery.

It’sgoingtobe along roadto recoverybutCouncilisadvocating onbehalfofourbusinessandwider communityforgovernmentsupportto getthedistrictbackonitsfeetagain.

Hawke’sBayAirport flyinghighfor regionalgrowth

Asa lifelineand amajor infrastructureasset,Hawke’s BayAirportplays acrucial role ingrowingandfuture-proofingHawke’s Bay’sconnectivitytothe restofNew Zealandandbeyond.

Akey regionaltransportasset,the importanceoftheairportwasnever moreapparentthanduringCyclone Gabrielle,where itplayed amajor role insupportingtheimmediateemergency responseeffort,providing acritical gateway into Hawke’sBay.

Crucially,theairport remainedopen throughout,andthemain runwaywas notimpactedbythecyclone,enabling supportfortheNZDefenceForceand civilianhelicoptersfromdayoneof theemergency response. Withinthe terminaltheairportsupportedthe rescuedwithmealsandsomewhereto rest.Theairportalsobecame agathering pointforthelocalcommunitytoconnect withfamilyandfriendsoverthefree Wi-Fiandtochargepersonaldevices. Thedayafterthecyclone1,600people visitedtheterminal,andatonepoint therewasmorethan600connectedto the Wi-Fi!

Morethan amonthafterthe cyclone,demandforairconnections hassurgedduetothedamagedroading infrastructure impactingconnections headingnorth,andtheairportisdoing allitcantosupportdemand.

Turningtonon-cyclonematters, 2023isallaboutsharpeningthe focusongrowthinitiativesand capitalinvestmentprojectsdesigned tocontributeto regional economic prosperity.Theyearaheadwillbe firmlyfocusedonmakingsignificant progresson anumberofcriticalstrategic projectsincludingthedevelopment ofAhuririAeropark,thejointventure withManawaEnergyfor a45megawatt solarfarmattheairportandgrowingair freight services.

Allthreeareaimedatdeveloping airportinfrastructurethatbetterserves theneedsofthelocaleconomy.In particular,thesolarfarmpreparesthe airportforinnovationsinaviationon thehorizon –electricandhydrogen poweredaircraft –andmeansthe airportwillbecomea providerof greenelectricityforlocalbusinessand residentialcommunities.

Manyofthecapitalinvestment projectsplannedpriortoCovid-19, suchastheairsideapron resurfacing, carparkupgradesandfireequipment improvementswereputonholdfor twoyearsasthehatcheswere battened downagainsttheuncertaintiesandlow revenuesCovidbroughtwithit.In2023, theseprojectsarefirmlybackonthe workplan.Theairportcompanywill alsobeactivelypursuingopportunities tocontributeto regionaleconomic developmentandtransportdiscussions andplayingitspartinensuring Hawke’sBayhasthebestpossible integratedtransportinfrastructure to support athrivingeconomy.

Ontopofthenewandvastly improvedterminalexperience,visitors andtravellerswillsoonbeenjoying theintroductionofnewtechnology designedtomakeusingthecarpark smoothandmoreintuitive.

Lastbutbynomeansleast,the airportwillcontinueto relentlessly pursueitscommitmenttobecoming NewZealand’smostsustainableairport anditsgoaltobecarbonneutralby 2030.Animmediatepriorityin2023is toexploretheadditionofEVcharging stationsattheairporttosupportEV drivers,aswellasairporttenants’EV goalstoo.

Allinall,2023isshapinguptobe theyearHawke’sBayAirportgoesfull throttleonhelpingthe region reconnect withthe restofNewZealand,start theprocessto recoverfromCyclone Gabrielle,and reachnewheightsof prosperity.

Kaweka Hospital gets positive patient feedback

KawekaHospital is well on its way to changing healthcare in Hawke’s Bay,reaching a milestone of its 1,000th patienttoreceive surgery,just five months after opening.

Kaweka Hospital’s managing director Dr Colin Hutchison says the feedback from patients and their families so far has been has beenvery positive with many rating the hospital, the specialist and the overall carehighly.

“Weare thrilled with the feedback from those that have had specialist treatment over the firstsix monthswe have been open.

An example of the feedback is “I would just like to say ahuge thank you to the entirestaff for yourprofessional approach looking after me while Iwas in your care. Your careand service rates are 10 out of 10. Along with the great food and drinks.”

He addsthat positive improvements have also been made from constructive feedback provided by patientsafter their stay

“Weare anew hospital so it’s great to hear the voice of our patients and have the flexibility to make changes that focus on ourvalue of continuous improvement, and better the experience for futurepatients and their wh nau.”

Kaweka Hospital works alongside

more than 30 specialists offering ENT(ear,nose and throat), general surgery,gynaecology, urology and ophthalmology.This important work is supported by over 100 Kaweka employees including technicians, nurses, and wider support staff.

Dr Hutchison saysthe proudly locally owned hospitalaims to add many thousands of surgical procedures ayear from its four operating theatres, giving greater choice in private surgery as well as muchneeded supporttothe public system.

“Wehave set anew standardof surgical careinHawke’s Bay and we are

committed to getting people who need surgicaltreatment, back up on their feet and enjoying abetter quality of life as quickly as possible.”

As the reputationcontinues to build in the deliveryofquality of services and facilities,DrHutchisonsaid the overall campusistaking shape with construction of the hospital’s stage2 facility which is progressing well.

The three-storybuilding brings an additional 7,000m2 of clinical space with acritical careward, localcancer diagnosis and treatment services and a cardiac catheterisationlab. Thisisset to open in early 2025.

The building features world leading seismic design and earthquake proofing technology,a first for buildings in Hawke’s Bay and enabling the facility to remain fully operational following a large seismic event.

The cancer careclinicwillbe operated by Canopy HealthcareGroup, and will be the first of its kind in New Zealand. It will offer afull service imaging, consultation, and oncology treatment centreusing state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanning technology while providing specialist oncology treatment, all under one roof

Royston Hospital expands, two new operating theatres open

In February,staff and specialistscelebrated asignificant milestone forRoyston Hospital with the blessing and opening of two new operating theatres and new patient admission andrecovery areas, expanding the theatresuite to seven.

The expansion of Royston Hospital gives anod to its longstanding history in Hawke’sBay.Royston’s original hospital had one operating theatreand ten inpatient beds. Theoriginal hospital wasshaken to its core on 3February 1931 during the devastating earthquakeinHawke’s Bay.

OurGovernmentis working together with Hawke’sBay throughthe establishmentof aRegional Recovery agency which willensurelocal perspectives areincluded,the recovery is coordinatedandfitstheneedsofthe region. Thisisthe resultof collaboration betweenHawke’s Bay’s local government,iwileadersandourGovernment, demonstratingthe power ofpartnershipthatour region’s recovery dependson. To furtherstrengthenthe recovery, an Oversight Board,madeupofup to sixlocallyappointed directorsandanindependentChairappointed by the Governmentwillalsobeestablished.

To thoseaffectedhelpisavailablenow: Helpis availablefrommanysources;MPI,sectorgroups, RuralSupportTrusts,Civil Defence, otheragencies,local councils,and communitygroupsare theretosupportyou.

Business Support

TheGovernmenthasallocated$50million to help businesses in cyclone-affectedregionswiththeclean upandassistthem to getthembackupandrunning.

The Hawke’sBay Chamberof Commerce isdistributing thebusinesssupportgrantsforthe region.Theuptake ofgrantshas beenstrong so farover$7millionhas been approvedfor Hawke’sBay.

FarmerandGrower recovery grants

Farmers, growers, andwhenuaMāoriowners significantlyaffectedbyCycloneGabriellecan get grantstokickstartrecoveryefforts.TheGovernment hasallocated$51 million to help farmersandgrowers payfor work,including fencing, andclearing silt to save treesandvines.Thefundingincludes:

•Grants forpastoralandarable farmers ofup to $10,000 to helpinitial recovery on-farm,suchas repairstowaterinfrastructureforstockand fencing to containstock.

•Grants forgrowersof$2,000 perhectareuptoa maximumof$40,000 to remove siltfromtrees and vines, supportclean-up,andminimise futurelosses. So farover$30million hasbeenpaidoutwith over43 percent toHawke’sBay.

Hawke’sBay benefits from major investment in local radiologyservices

Canopy Healthcare’s radiology arm,TRG Imaging, hasannounced asignificantinvestmentand expansionofmedicalimagingservicesin Hawke’sBay today.

CanopyHealthcare chief executive Tony Moffatt said theannouncementis theresultofyearsof planning andcommitmentfromthe TRGteam, eager to bringevenmoreworld-class imagingand diagnostic services to thelocal community.

“Theexpansionwill be seen as some positive news when thereissomuchuncertaintyand changein theregion.

Forthe first time,the Hawke’sBay willseemajor benefits withtheintroductionofnew PET-CT services.

“Aswehaveseenoverthe last month, roading infrastructure connecting Hawke’sBay to other regionshas beenseverely impacted andour investmentinmedicalimaging technologyand service in theregion,provides peaceofmind for thoseneeding responsive medicaltreatment locally,” Mr Moffattsaid.

TRG Imaging Hawke’sBay General Manager Paul Toomey said thePET-CTisanessentialtoolin thediagnosisandmanagement of many cancers includingmelanoma, lung cancer,breastcancer, colon cancer andprostatecancer.

Currently,the closest machinesareinWellington andHamilton, ajourneythat TRG Imagingwillsoon ensure is athing of thepast.

“Feedback from patients andtheirwhānau is clear that themorediagnosisand treatment that canbe done in Hawke’sBay,the better.

“This newtechnology, coupledwith Canopy Healthcare’s medicaloncology businessCanopy CancerCare,means that cancer patientsinthe Hawke’sBay canbeservicedlocally,withworldclasscare.”

In addition to world-class nuclear imaging, the new localPET-CT and Therapy Centre will bring with

it specialisedtherapiesfor Prostate cancerand Neuro-Endocrine tumours.

Adding to TRG Imaging’scapabilityand services is theinstallation of asecond MRImachineat their CanningRoadsitethat will be fullyoperationalin May, priortoopeningat Kaweka Hospitalin2025.

Additionally, TRG hasannouncedthat they will be providing MRIservicesinNapier, at asoon-to-beannounced location,therebyensuringthat hightech imagingservicesare beingmade available to both cities in the Hawke’s Bay.

Mr Toomeysaidthatsince2020, thebusinesshas invested millions of dollarsinthelatestMRI andCT scanner technology.

Shanley Surveyors has been surveying land across the many parts of the east coastsince 1931 Shanley’s was originally established by Harry Davies, Norman Hewkin and Colin Shanley, first known as ‘Davies and Hewkin’and from 1968 ‘Shanley & Co’ Aaron Brittin, an employee of Colin for over 30 years, took over in 2020 rebranding to ‘Shanley Surveyors’ Aaron now joins Development Nous as a company Director and Survey Lead

Established in 2010 by Kelvin and Rachel Landon, Design Phase has been a trusted name in Structural and Civil Engineering in Hawkes Bay Design Phase has collaborated on projects with Development Nous for many years therefore it was a logicalstep for the companies to join forces to increase the depth to the senior leadership Kelvin joins Development Nous as a company Director and Principal Structural Engineer and Rachel will lead the engineering department as Principal3 waters Engineer
