Inthefaceoftheunprecedentedchallengesposedby CycloneGabriellein2023,theHawkesBayForestryGroup (HBFG)demonstratedextraordinaryleadership,resilience, andcommitmenttotherecoveryofourcommunity.
Followingthedevastationof thecyclone,theHawkesBay forestrysectorfacedsignificant hardshipsastheydealtwiththedirect impactofthecycloneandnegative sentimenttowardsforestry.Underthe leadershipofChairDamonWise,the HBFGengageddirectlywitheffected communitiestounderstandtheissues andprovidesupportwheretheycould. Theyalsorapidlyestablishedan
independentinitiativewithInterpineto analysethetruenatureofthewoody debriswithintheregionandalong thecoastline.IanRobertsonandAlec Olsencollecteddataonthewoody debrisacrossHawke’sBay,addressing misconceptionsregardingthe quantityofloggingdebrisandradiata pineamongstthedebrisaffecting infrastructureandlocalcommunities.

oflargewoodydebrisshowedsignsof harvestresidue.Pinedebrisaccounted for48%ofthetotal,with13%having rootballslinkedtomid-slopefailureand streambankerosion,while31%showed noevidenceofharvesting.Additionally, 38%ofthedebriswaswilloworpoplar.
Withanunrelentingcommitmentto aidintherecoveryphase,theHBFG mobiliseditsexpertise,resources,and manpowertodeviseacoordinated plantomanagetheenormoustask ofclearingwaterways,coastlinesand nearbycommunities,ensuringthat effortswerealignedwithcostefficiency andresourceeffectiveness.
Thedetailedplanpresentedtothe HawkesBayRegionalCouncil(HBRC) encapsulatedwell-structuredprojects, encompassingtreatments,costs,and contributions,allessentialtoaccelerate recoveryoperations.
