It’s a fairly isolated spot with no shops but it does have surf patrols in summer. There’s a strong rip current that attracts surfers. Further south is popular Waimarama Beach with its long, sandy beach and views to Bare Island (Motuokura). This is undoubtedly the most popular beach in summer and crowds flock to the Waimarama Beach Day in January. In Central Hawke’s Bay there are some magnificent, largely deserted, beaches to enjoy: Kairakau Beach, Mangakuri with its sandy beach and rocky shore, Pourere Beach where you can fish, swim, surf and launch boats from the beach. Aquatic activities The hawke’s bay region has an impressive diversiTy oF Fishing opporTuniTies From The TukiTuki To The mohaka, while lake Fishing is limiTed To lake TuTira, The only subsTanTial lake Fishery in The region ThaT’s sTocked annually wiTh Tarawera sourced Fish. Hawke’s Bay does however have some of the North Island’s best headwater fisheries and access to a variety of lowland angling. This variety and ease of access for angling ensures opportunity is plentiful, increasing your chances of finding that ‘hot-spot’ or that ‘secret spot’ no one else has found. The major river systems in the region are the Mohaka, Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro, Waipawa and Tukituki, all of which have comprehensive angler access pamphlets to assist anglers. Both brown and rainbow trout are prevalent throughout the region. The dry fly fishing on the Tukituki, along with its many tributaries, is a major attraction during the summer months as fish feed on the surface. The Ngaruroro and Mohaka River headwater wilderness fisheries are nationally rated and offer anglers the chance to catch trophy sized fish in gin clear waters. The middle and
lower reaches of the region’s rivers are easily accessible from a variety of public roads and provide anglers with vast amounts of fishable water. White water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, wakeboarding, water skiing and surfing opportunities abound in The Bay. At Pandora Pond, part of Ahuriri Estuary, a large range of kayaks and other water sports equipment such as paddle boards are available to hire. Clive (or Ngaruroro) River, home of the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club, attracts large numbers of water sports enthusiasts who enjoy activities including water and jet skiing. For surfing enthusiasts there’s a good selection of surfing spots such as Haumoana and Te Awanga, Ocean Beach, Waimarama, and further north Awatoto, City Reef not far from Napier, The Gap, Stingray Bay and Aropaonui.

Fine Dining amongst the vines many oF hawke’s bay’s ForemosT resTauranTs are aTTached or associaTed wiTh vineyards and wineries. Mission Estate Winery in Church Road Taradale was the birthplace of New Zealand wine in 1851 when it was established by French missionaries. The elegantly restored historic seminary building provides a stunning location for the awardwinning Mission Restaurant. Sited in the hills with sweeping views of the Bay, the restaurant offers contemporary fine dining with a European influence. Produce is fresh, local and seasonal. During summer diners can enjoy the view while eating alfresco while indoors provides an intimate dining setting. Elephant Hill is an innovative winery estate and restaurant located on the beautiful Te Awanga coast with views across the infinity pool and vineyard, to the ocean and Cape Kidnappers beyond. Serving contemporary European style cuisine Elephant Hill was Awarded ‘Best Winery
Restaurant Runner Up’ by Cuisine Good Food Guide 2015. At Craggy Range in Havelock North the restaurant is called Terrôir – its name reflects that the food, the vineyard’s wine and its culture, come together sublimely, in a dramatic setting. With extensive views of Te Mata Peak the emphasis is on fresh, local produce and chef sources much produce from the organic vegetable garden. The emphasis is on relaxed country food – New Zealand cuisine with a French flavour. Black Barn Bistro in Havelock North is in the heart of a vineyard surrounded by vines and the large generous veranda allows wide views across the region. A canopy of grapes is a perfect place to enjoy lunch and a glass of wine. The bistro is available for private functions and is also the perfect venue for a very limited number of weddings.
Summer in Hawke’s Bay 2016 - 2017
Hawke’s Bay Wine Country NOT ONLY IS HAWKE’S BAY A DELIGHT FOR GOURMETS IT’S ALSO HOME TO SOME 70, OR SO, WINERIES AND ABOUT 250 VINEYARDS WHICH MAKES IT NEW ZEALAND’S SECOND LARGEST WINE PRODUCER AND THE LARGEST PREMIUM RED WINE PRODUCING REGION IN THE COUNTRY. Just as the soil is suited to growing quality agricultural and horticultural produce so it has proved exceptionally well suited to vines: there are over 4,845 producing hectares. After the establishment of the Mission Vineyard in 1851, shortly followed by nearby Church Road Winery, other growers were attracted to the area and now there’s a network of vineyards growing varieties that include Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The first vineyards were established not far from Hastings, Havelock North and Napier, although now they extend northwest to the Dartmoor Valley, as far north as Gisborne, down through the Heretaunga Plains to Central Hawke’s Bay and west along the Ngaruroro River.
Soils vary tremendously from clay loam, limestone to sands and free draining gravels and red metal, which lends itself to a tremendous variety of wine styles. Growing sites range from the coast to inland foothills, river valleys, and from sea level to substantial heights. It’s a region with even more potential for growing different varieties. Given the importance of food and wine to the local economy it’s not surprising that there are many events and activities that focus on wine, especially during the balmy summer months. Most wineries are family owned and produce less than 200,000 litres a year. The boutique nature of many of the wineries adds to the personal nature and pleasure of the tour and tasting experience.

Summer in Hawke’s Bay 2016 - 2017
Moving a business to Hawke’s Bay By Wayne Walford, CEO Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce HAWKE’S BAY’S REGIONAL BRAND, ‘GREAT THINGS GROW HERE’ HAS BEEN TRAVELLING THE COUNTRY TALKING TO BUSINESS COMMUNITIES ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF MOVING A BUSINESS TO HAWKE’S BAY. At the recent Wellington event Napier Mayor Bill Dalton, representing all the Hawke’s Bay Mayors, introduced the event that started with a profile video of the Big Save story featuring Founder Ray McKimm. This video outlined the reasons why the McKimm’s moved the Big Save head office and 14 families from Paraparaumu, Kapiti Coast to Ahuriri, Napier. Ray presented a compelling case including the positive cost options of importing, more shipping networks through Napier, more disposable income as a result of the Hawke’s Bay economic climate and amazing lifestyle in Hawke’s Bay, all of which sparked some serious interest. Local entrepreneur Fiona Tomlinson shared her very
personal story about moving her home, her dog and her successful photography business and a growing macaron business to Hawke’s Bay. Do you think she wants to move back to Auckland and spend all the time she was in traffic, not on your life? Macarons.co.nz is growing flat out thanks to the ease of distribution from Hawke’s Bay to the rest of New Zealand. Who would have known that distribution from Hawke’s Bay is much easier than from Auckland? In Fiona’s case one conversation with one company in Hawke’s Bay verses three conversations with three different companies in Auckland. Steve Young, Business Development Manager, Napier Port presented the

Summer in Hawke’s Bay 2016 - 2017 captivating story about the Napier Port connections and performance. For those in Wellington who were unaware of the reduction of international shipping links in Wellington and increasing connections in Napier, this was a compelling presentation. The statistics for Napier Port are very impressive. Olivia Pierre, Aeronautical and Infrastructure Manager, Hawke’s Bay Airport, eloquently presented the opportunities the development of Hawke’s Bay Airport will enable, based on the growth they are seeing in travellers thanks to the additional of JetStar to the
network and pricing changes Air New Zealand is now offering. The development of the Business Park, the development of the new entrance and main road upgrade will all add to a more streamlined customer interaction at the airport. Kiwibank’s George Hiotakis, 2IC enterprise operations explained why Kiwibank chose Hastings for its call centre. The lifestyle was certainly an option to attract good staff and in some cases stimulated a move. The market for staff was ripe and the connection, building at 100% Earthquake code all
supported the move to Hastings. With 150 staff they are looking to increase to 250. This is a great example of the positive mix of circumstances that are on offer in Hawke’s Bay. Sam Jackman, Hastings District Council marketing advisor and brand champion for the Hawke’s Bay brand ‘Great things Grow Here’ then introduced some poignant information about the opportunity of Hawke’s Bay like the teacher student ratio in Hawke’s Bay of 14.86 students per teacher compared with 35 students per teacher in Auckland.
The opportunity to network with the audience was a great chance to meet and answer questions supporting the presentations and the region. It was awesome to be part of a very real process to explore business growth opportunities for Hawke’s Bay in another city. The Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce looks forward to continuing to support these initiatives and support businesses keen to relocate to Hawke’s Bay. New businesses add diversity for the region, add opportunities for employment and add to our commercial environment.

NAPIER CITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS SUFFERED A DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE IN FEBRUARY 1931 WHICH VIRTUALLY DESTROYED THE CITY. WHAT WASN’T DESTROYED BY THE QUAKE WAS LATER DAMAGED BY FIRE THAT RAGED THROUGH THE CITY CENTRE. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH THE ICONIC NORFOLK PINES ALONG MARINE PARADE, PLANTED IN 1890, SURVIVED THE QUAKE. Rebuilding was quick with many new buildings following the popular designs of the times. The result was the highest concentration of Art Deco style buildings in the Southern hemisphere. The undoubted highlight of Napier’s calendar is the annual Tremains Art Deco Festival, a not too serious celebration of Art Deco style, presented by the Art Deco Trust. Over 40,000 people from all over the world travel to Napier to experience a fantastic range of events which in 2017 run from 15-19 February. Each year the number and range of events expands and include the Gatsby Picnic, the Depression Dinner, a parade of vintage cars, a soap box derby, a Silver Slipper Ball and many, many more events. Most people dress in Art Deco style and being in Napier during the festival is rather like attending a huge, open air party. It’s a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and revel in the unique atmosphere that is the Art Deco Festival.

The Cape is home to the world’s largest mainland gannet colony and one of the world’s top 50 golf courses. Riders will also enjoy views of the impressive Te Mata Peak and the expansive ocean. The Water Ride is flat, easy and perfect for families. It provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and includes the Ahuriri Estuary, a sanctuary for endangered wetland wildlife. The Wineries Ride is a relaxed ride that covers the wine-growing areas of Bridge
Pa, Gimblett Gravels and the Ngatarawa Triangle. The trail is dotted with numerous awardwinning wineries that afford plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. A popular event held at Easter is the Big Easy planned for Saturday 15 April 2017. This is an easy ride of 45kms along the Hawke’s Bay Trails with plenty of stops on the way. For those who prefer a bit of off-road excitement there is a mountain biking club (HBMTBC). The members have access by permit to land owned by Pan Pac Forests in Eskdale.
