Welcome to the new school year – and a brand new decade! I was lucky enough to be in Hawke’s Bay for this year’s photo of all the senior student leaders gathered together at the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hastings. It was a beautiful sunny day, which I was reliably informed by most people I spoke to was not in the slightest bit unusual for The Bay.The park was bustling, with a students’ athletic meeting going on in the background. It got me thinking about how lucky we are to live in New Zealand. Our school system is as good as any in the world – and Hawke’s Bay is right up there – and we continue to focus on always improving. Our principals and teachers are passionate and committed, and, with the start of another year, we have a new group of emerging student leaders about to stamp their mark on their schools and communities. The young men and women I spoke to were understandably excited as they embark on the next stage of their lives. As leaders they have a wonderful opportunity to show the world the best of their schools as they further develop their skills and advance their future aspirations. This is the third year I’ve been invited to contribute to the Hawke’s Bay Leaders in their Schools publication, and I’m delighted to be able to do so. It’s a real honour to be able to help celebrate the conveyor belt of community strength, diversity and talent coming out of your schools year after year. Warm regards Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education

Leaders in their School 2020

Hastings Girls’ High School is an extremely well-resourced school, which offers first class academic opportunities to enable our learners to be prepared and excited about tomorrow’s opportunities and challenges. At our place, female leaders are the standard, not the exception, therefore every decision is based around what is important and works best for girls. Inspiration is what we offer and we empower our learners to make this journey their own. Our girls have a reputation of being openminded, inclusive and culturally responsive. This way of thinking sets her apart, equipping her for the real world.

LINDISFARNE COLLEGE LEADERS 2020

Possible starts here.

Head Prefect Charlie Dods

Dep Head Boy Finn Calder

Seizing Opportunities It is an honor and privilege to be Head of School for this coming year. This year will no doubt be a challenging one, but I’m looking forward to facing these challenges which will enable me to build on my overall character in my quest to become a better man. 18 incredible young lads make up our 2020 prefect group, each of whom have been given certain roles which they are suited to ensure they lead the school in a positive direction. This year we aim to not just improve the College, but to involve ourselves with activities out in the wider community to make a positive change. As a prefect group we have specific goals we will live by for this year and the aim is to steadily chip away at anything we need to do to reach these goals. We want to build on what has been established by our previous years senior prefects and keep Lindisfarne a positive environment. Throughout my time at Lindisfarne I have grown into a man who is proud of his actions. I personally believe I wouldn’t have turned into the man I am today without the help

Head of Boarding George Charteris

Lindisfarne has given me academically, culturally, socially, physically, and spiritually. The College has provided me with many opportunities, the range of which means it is impossible to accomplish them. Being a boarder is a huge advantage, not only because I have everything I need here to succeed, but because of the close relationships formed which will last a lifetime. People make mistakes in life, but your job is to learn from these mistakes to build your personal character and turn the learnings into teachings which can maximize your chances of becoming a well-rounded respected student. This is not achievable without always respecting others, showing kindness, courage, integrity and humility and making sure you are giving service to the school. The Lindisfarne journey has been a happy one for me, as there have never been any moments where I felt alone or stuck because I didn’t have the support or resources I needed. Charlie Dods - Head Prefect 2020

“Our Prefect team are vital to the continuing success and positive culture of our College. They serve by modelling what it is to be a young man of good character and through their active encouragement and support of others. I have every confidence that these young men will rise to meet the challenges and opportunities of leadership” - Mr Ken MacLeod, Rector

TE AUTE COLLEGE Kia mataara, e tu- i runga i te whakapono, whakatangata kia kaha kia meatia a- koutou mea katoa i runga i te aroha. Te Aute College established in 1854 is a state integrated, Ma-ori Anglican boarding school for young men located in Pukehou, Central Hawke’s Bay. The college moto Whakatangata kia kaha – Quit ye like men be strong is taken from the above opening passage, 1 Corinthians 16:13 in the bible. Te Aute College enrolls boarders and day students from Year 9 through to 13 and is a specialised school committed to producing the finest young men in Aotearoa, under the mantle and our special character status of kaupapa Ma-ori, tikanga Ma-ori and Christianity. Any young man who enters the portal of Te Aute College instantly becomes part of this legacy where the amorangi (leading mantra) is Ma-oritanga. Te Aute College is also a specialist school that is set upon the prestigious mantle and whenua (land) bequested by Nga-i Te Whatuia-piti, the local hapu-.

Tasman Tamati Head Boy / Ngata Whare Nga-ti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Nga-puhi What it means to be a leader at Te Aute. I began my journey at Te Aute College as a Year 9 student in 2016. Four years later, I am privileged to be given the role as Head Boy for Te Aute College for 2020. Te Aute has made a huge contribution in making me into the person I have become today. It has given me many opportunities. I participated at the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition in 2018 and represented the school at the National Secondary Schools Softball competition. Last year I was truly grateful to receive the Puawaitanga Scholarship. These opportunities will be helpful for me as I continue my journey beyond the college gates. My goal as Head Boy is to influence our students to be the best versions of themselves so that they learn the values which Te Aute encourage. That they grow to be great young men prepared for what the bigger world has to offer. Whakatangata Kia Kaha.

Eli (Tutere) Isherwood Deputy Head Boy / Ngata Whare Nga-ti Tu- wharetoa, Nga-ti Hikairo What it means to be a leader at Te Aute.

To me being a leader at Te Aute means stepping up and having a voice for the boys who are unable to speak for themselves. It means paving the way for our next generation. A leader is someone who is positive and kind, someone who does what is right for his people. To be a leader at Te Aute you need to be Tika, this means you respect the rules, the teachers, your peers and yourself. You also need to be pono, to be honest, have integrity and lead by example. You need to have courage to be able to lead the boys down the right path and teach them right from wrong so that they grow up and walk out into the world as respectful young men. House Captains

Developing Young Leaders

Pukekaihau Kapa Haka Leaders

House Captains fulfil a vital role in leading their Houses through an array of cultural and sporting events throughout the year. They are expected to lead by example and support each House event and encourage their House to participate to the best of their ability.

Leadership opportunities are offered at each Year level within the school. Every year students from each year level form Leadership Groups, which organise and run various events for their year level. The opportunity to show and grow leadership skills and work with others is an important step in developing our young leaders of the future.

The kaitataki (leaders) of our Kapa Haka group Pukekaihau have an important roll to play in developing our future leaders and taking a leading role in our most important school events such as Honours Assemblies and welcoming important guests.

Pursue your dreams with Premier! 24-year-old Te Paea Waitai is one of Premiers amazing hairdressing students in Hawke's Bay. She has always had an eye for colouring and braiding hair, what better way to further her skills than to begin her journey at Premier.Te Paea enjoys the awesome learning environment Premier has to offer as well as the support our tutors give to every student. She plans on enrolling in her second year of hairdressing with Premier, to further her skills and knowledge. Her biggest inspiration is her son who motivates her to do better everyday.Te Paea’s advice to new students is to “pursue your dreams, don't miss out on an awesome opportunity, start today not tomorrow” Hawke’s Bay barber student Devoe Rogan was told to dream big and to pursue his passion in what he enjoyed doing. He enjoyed making people look good to help them gain confidence. Devoe started cutting hair at

the age of 11, from then on he wanted to study to develop his skills and knowledge of the craft. He had never heard of Premier until he heard an advert on the radio station and word of mouth, he then thought let’s give Premier a go! Since studying at Premier, Devoe has created a strong bond with our tutors and students, to which he now calls his whanau. His goal after graduating is to gain employment in a barbershop so he can build his funds to one day have his own barbershop business. Our previous tutor Peleti Oli is a huge inspiration in Devoe’s life, guiding him and the students in ways that allowed them to feel understood as people and treated like family. Devoe advises new students to pursue your dream.“If you love what you do, it won’t be a job, it will be a passion.Working towards your goal will inspire others around you to do the same”
