Leaders in their Schools 2022
Message from the Minister
MP for Tukituki Anna Lorck with Tukituki Youth MP and former Head Boy of Karamu High School Keelan Heesterman.
Congratulations to all our school leaders across Hawke’s Bay
Looking to the year ahead, I am so excited about the opportunities that are out there for young people.
You are standing proud for your peers and for the future of our region.
So I implore you to look at all options for the future and find something you are interested in or enjoy. Because you truly can do anything you put your mind to, both at school and beyond.
You have started your year of leadership at a time in our history where school life, your learning environment and how you keep connected with friends and teachers has certainly changed from when you began in Year 9. Who would have imagined that mask wearing would basically become part of the uniform, and yet as young people always do, you rise to the challenge, adapt and make the most of technology to also teach us a thing or two! With five daughters who, like me have grown up and gone to school here, I am forever learning more by listening to the younger generation’s ideas for a better world, for Climate Change, for wellbeing. I know you will keep making the most of every opportunity ahead now and as you continue on your own journey for lifetime success. Keep flying high.

There are so many possibilities, with new and emerging technologies and changes to the way people are working. We are also seeing lots of young people choosing trades as a really great option for their futures. These are fantastic options, as is university or any further study in an area you like the look or sound of. For example since July 2020, nearly 190,000 people have been supported to study through the Trades Training and Apprenticeships Fund. This is across a range of sectors – construction, conservation, community support, engineering, primary industries, road transport and information technology – and there are so many opportunities in each of them.
I also want to acknowledge the fact many of you are finishing school or starting your final years having gone through two years of a pandemic. COVID-19 has meant a shift in the way we learn and has been incredibly tough for many families. So my message to you is this: good luck, go easy on yourself, but don’t give up – you’ve got a great year, and a great future, ahead of you. Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education.

Quaid Crawford Head Boy
I feel very privileged to have been given the honour of leading the school as your Head Boy for 2022. I was born in Hastings and have grown up in the Bay. I come from a family of five. My mother and father are both teachers, I have two sisters, one is studying Education in Auckland and the other is studying to become a teacher through Massey University. I enjoy sport especially waka ama, rugby and going to the gym. In my spare time I enjoy diving out at Bare Island and fishing with my whanau at Waimarama Beach. I also have both of my cousins here at school as well as my grandfather who is on the staff.
In my time at school I have tried to involve myself in all five areas of the school. I have strived to do and give my best through sport, culture, academics, leadership and service. I am proud that I have contributed in all of these areas. Hastings Boys’ High School has afforded me many opportunities that have helped me grow into the young man I am today. I see the role of prefect as one of service and this will allow me
Pritesh Sunder Academic Captain
to give back to the school. It is my chance to build on the legacy that those before me have left. It is an opportunity to add to the fabric of the school by striving daily to live by and promote the seven Akina Man values. During my time at the Outward Bound Leadership Course I learnt about the values that make a great leader. Compassion, empathy, self belief and learning to be comfortable being
Hunter Yarrall Sports Captain
uncomfortable. These are some of the values I look forward to instilling within the prefect group this year. It is our turn to lead from the front and give back. E hara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini. My strength is not that of a single warrior but that of many. Quaid Crawford Head Boy 2022

Hastings Boys’ High School has been prominent in Hawke’s Bay education for well over a century in providing curriculum and teaching methods where boys are able to develop into fine young men. We understand that all boys have leadership ability and potential and we see it as one of our school goals to develop this part of their character. R G Sturch, B. Ed., Dip Tchng, M. Ed Admin (Hons)

HERETAUNGA Named after an area “Hastings”. This is where our school is situated and is the area that draws most of the school’s 700 or so pupils. MANU HUIA Named after the school emblem the Huia Bird. The Huia bird was a prized possession by the early Maori for the feathers. They were worn by those who were deemed to have Mana and respect. The Huia bird is also noted for its loyalty to its mate. TE KAHU Named after the bird “The Hawk”. The Hawk can be seen around most part of Hawke’s Bay and is a common site on most country roads. The true beauty of Hastings can only be seen from the lofty heights that the Hawk flies. TE MATA Named after the famous Hastings landmark “Te Mata Peak”. This mountain range is the backdrop for the school. Named after the famous Kahungunu giant, Rangokako who lies along the peak - known as his resting place. The mountains full name “Te Matarae o Rongokako” - The brow of Rongokako.

MANA TĀNGATA
Is essentially about the dignity of the person, self determination and the rights and obligations that we all have as individuals. A fundamental aspect of mana tāngata is connection - to each other, to our environment, and to the spiritual realm. When we give respect to all those connections, the mana of all of us as individuals is enhanced - AMAIA WATSON, MANUKURA

LINDISFARNE COLLEGE LEADERS 2022
Embracing Opportunities Head Prefect Tuawhio Porima
Deputy Head Boy Sam Bartram
Head of Boarding Hugh Kilsby
I would like to say how incredibly grateful and honoured I am to be chosen as Head Prefect of Lindisfarne College for 2022. In this role, I know I will encounter many challenges that will constantly test my leadership and character. However, I can give the assurance that I did not accept this position half-heartedly and together, the prefect team and I will overcome these challenges and get the job done. The role of Head Prefect has provided me with a great opportunity to be a key leader in our school. This is just the latest in the stream of opportunities that I have been offered at Lindisfarne. Every day we have great opportunities placed before us but these are only of value to us if we take advantage of them. I intend to encourage all boys at the College to make an effort to try something new this year. By trying something new, we give ourselves the opportunity to grow and develop as young men. As a result of seizing the moment, I’ve been fortunate enough to receive an outstanding academic education,
play rugby, and be a part of the Kapa Haka group, but also, Lindisfarne has given me access to pursue other interests, different interests such as speech and drama and public speaking. I have gained vitals skills that have allowed me to take on the role of Head Boy with confidence, something I would not have thought possible a few years ago. My journey as Head Prefect at Lindisfarne is one that has been shared by many good men before me and will be shared by many more good men to come. The last four years at Lindisfarne have given me the necessary tools to take on a job like this. And I hope to use these tools to achieve the goals that the prefect team and I have set out to accomplish this year. Chief among these goals is to inspire all our students to become men of character who go on to lead successful and significant lives. We will do this by first urging them to take advantage of the opportunities they currently have at their fingertips. Tuawhio Porima – Head Prefect 2022
“To be named a Lindisfarne prefect is a huge honour and it demonstrates that these young men have offered to serve and lead their school. I am confident they will at all times have the six Lindisfarne values uppermost in their minds: They will be respectful and kind to all. They will show courage when forced to make difficult but correct decisions and when outside their comfort zone. They will not use their prefect position to wield power, but rather they will lead with humility and integrity. And, naturally, they will serve. They will be a team, but they’ll connect positively with the rest of the student body, with their friends and with staff. I wish our 2022 prefects all the very best for the year ahead.” - Rector, Mr Stuart Hakeney

Havelock North High School Aim to excel - Whaia te iti kahurangi At HNHS we acknowledge the trend in leadership away from the authoritative model to one which recognises that all students have developing leadership qualities. We also believe that leadership is an ongoing and developing process. Our concern with the authoritative model is that it often casts shadows over other students who may also have aspirations in this area.
Instead of a small group of autonomous prefects, a number of student committees are responsible for various initiatives which contribute to the life of the school. Formal leadership positions are distributed amongst Year 13 House and Committee leaders, while all Year 13 students have the opportunity to be part of these committees as well as being part of the mentoring programme for our junior students.

Totara College
Totara College’s vision is to see our students reaching their God given potential spiritually, academically, socially and physically.
Totara College and its new School Leaders T
he college year has started well with the addition of new students in both Primary and Secondary and new staff.
It is with great excitement that we announce the new Totara College student leaders for 2022. Charlotte Patu (Year 13) and Piper Carnie (Year 13) are our 2 Students Leaders with Josiah Max (Year 13) and Ben Knightly (Year 12) as Deputy Leaders. The choice of leaders demonstrates the caliber of students at Totara College. All four of our student leaders have demonstrated qualities and values of leadership. Charlotte is passionate about Tikanga Ma-ori. She has taken and instigated opportunities to share her knowledge and experience with the school community and beyond. Piper demonstrates our school motto of Phillipians 3:14 “I press towards the mark” She is a natural leader and motivator. She is a diligent worker who always pushes herself beyond her comfort zone. Josiah has shown leadership in his interactions with his peers and the school community. His calm and patient nature enables him to work alongside others without being intrusive. Ben brings his own unique style and personality to the leadership team. He enjoys relaxing with his friends, but it also aware of deadlines that need to be met. He has demonstrated great attitude and skills that are befitting of a deputy leader. We wish God’s blessings and wisdom over them this year; that they will fulfil their God given potential – as our motto says, and be role models for the whole Totara College Community.
