COLOUR MY WORLD! New decorating ideas to bring home Whether you’re building new or renovating your home to better suit your personality and lifestyle, we’ve rounded up a selection of new trending ideas to help inspire your next project, from quick weekend refreshes to total home makeovers.
The sky’s the limit
Brown comes back around
T
he world’s all-time favourite colour, blue, is always relevant. Cool, greyed and classic coastal blues such as Resene Nepal, Resene Frozen, Resene Blue Moon and Resene Midnight Express remain popular picks for interior decorating. But just like many of today’s popular hues, there’s plenty of indication that warmer varieties are set to make a big splash.
Wall in Resene Frozen, floor in Resene Alabaster, bench seat in Resene Quarter Frozen and hook rack and basket in Resene Blue Moon. Rug from Freedom.
Greens reign supreme
F
rom fashion to interiors, there is no hotter hue right now than green. Last year it was lighter shades of sage that were the dominant variation, but there has been a sharp shift as greens have become less grey and have taken on far warmer and yellowed undertones. It’s richly saturated and enticing olive greens that have come to the forefront of popularity. Lush and leafy colours like Resene Olive Green, Resene Seaweed and Resene Woodland have become the most desirable for decorating as we try and seek solace in the midst of an increasingly complicated world.
N
ot since the 1990s – and, before that, the 1970s – has brown been as big a deal as it is right now. Hues like Resene Leather, Resene Dusty Road, Resene Brown Sugar and Resene Brown Pod are skyrocketing in popularity, likely for their ability to simultaneously ground and warm the spaces that they’re used in – both highly desirable qualities to bring into a busy, contemporary home. But unlike the onedimensional browns of the 90s, these variations are richer and more complex with spirited undertones that love to be layered with one another or blended with greys, beiges and taupe, such as Resene Mondo, Resene Half Akaroa and Resene Half Nomad.
Remember, when it comes to decorating, use the trends as inspiration but be true to what you love. There’s no point following a trend if it doesn’t resonate for you in your home. Pick and choose the trends you love and adapt to suit how you want to live in colour.
Happy decorating! Courtesy of Resene

AIMING FOR GOLD
A
insworth + Collinson Ltd was formed in 1999 by business partners Ken Ainsworth and Flint Collinson, who share a common passion for building and seeing a project through from start to finish. They have built up a reputation throughout the Hawke’s Bay region as builders who consistently provide unbeatable craftsmanship and attention to detail with every job. It’s that attention to detail that has seen the business win an award category at The Registered Master Builders East Coast and Hawke’s Bay Regional competition consistently since 2006 when they first entered. Every year the standards get higher and
the competition itself is about lifting the standard of building every year, says Flint. This year was another success as Ainsworth and Collinson won several awards in the regional competition renovation category, namely: Regional Supreme winner, Regional Category Winner, Regional Kitchen Excellence and a Regional Gold. Their win placed them in the top 100 of New Zealand homes which earns them a spot at the National Awards gala on Saturday 20 November at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.
project manager who checks with the foreman about resources, labourers, materials and so on. “I price them and he builds them.” The team numbers 14 full time, highly experienced, staff and they have trained many apprentices over the years.
Flint is mainly office based where he attends to the quantity surveying and pricing while Ken is the

5 This year’s award winning renovation was a 1900s home on Bluff Hill entered in the $500,000 to the $1 million category. Ken was the project manager and Paul and Josh were the builders who crafted the extensive project. The project was to provide a family with better flow both inside and outside the home. The renovations were substantial and included a new kitchen, family and dining rooms, laundry, toilet and covered decks. In total the additional space amounted to 60sq m. The ambience was retained by using timber for the floors, windows and door joinery. A huge window by the dining room was encased with steel to maximise the views. All in all it’s a beautiful home with great flow throughout the interior and from the interior to the deck and landscaped garden. Flint is quick to point out that every build and every win is the result of a team effort involving architects, the clients, Ken and Flint and their skilled team of builders. “We’ve won an award category every time we’ve entered. It’s not about rivalry, you compete against yourself.” He also stresses their work is all about building to a quality, or bespoke standard. Their work involves new builds, alterations and renovations such as kitchens and bathrooms. The majority of referrals come via architects and occasionally the clients themselves. The first lockdown encouraged people to think about their homes and lifestyles and with travel not possible they have turned to using their money to invest in their homes. Currently there’s plenty of work on the books and no sign of demand diminishing. “Ainsworth + Collinson are a true pleasure to work with. Their attention to detail on all fronts from their comprehensive quote to their quality of workmanship is exemplary. Their team on site were competent, highly skilled and respectful to us as clients. Their close working relationship between our architect, subcontractors and us led to an optimal result that has been recognised in the registered Master Builder Awards. The fact it was all done within the agreed budget means that we cannot recommend them more highly.” Michael Park

INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WALLS
A
rt is very much an integral part of the interior design process than can easily bring focus and cohesion into a room. Nothing quite transforms a house into a home like art work and it needn’t cost a fortune.
Art can transform virtually any room whether a lounge, dining, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. The perfect time to shop for art is when you are planning to renovate a room or when you are moving home. There may also be occasions when you’d just like to fill a blank wall and match the existing furnishings and fittings.
Custom framing is a more personal service giving you the chance to discuss frames, various mats and embellishments. Frames are generally hand-made. It’s not just art that can be framed as there are plenty of keepsakes that can be displayed such as medals, wedding bouquets, baby keepsakes and even sports jerseys.
The choice is endless with inexpensive prints available in home and furniture stores and online. In addition to prints there are photographs, wall murals, canvas prints and the choice of framed or unframed pieces of art. Digital printing has revolutionised wall art and made it accessible to all. Subjects are as broad as the imagination: birds, botanical themes, abstracts, scenic photographs and architecture are a few examples. Posters, that were so popular in the 70s, are also trending. For those wanting to spend a little more there are some beautiful fine art prints available by some of New Zealand’s better known artists. They can be framed or can be stretched to fit on canvas. Inspirational sayings framed or printed on wood are still popular for example “Be strong, Be Brave, Be Humble.” They are also available as decals which can be stuck to walls. A decal is design prepared on special paper for transfer onto another surface such as glass, porcelain, or metal. For those looking for something a little edgy there’s a range of alternative wall decorations such as mandalas, macramé hangings, copper panels with cut outs, neon lights and shell and grass hangings. At the other end of the scale there are plenty of opportunities to invest in original pieces of art and have them custom framed, along with suitable decorative mats. Hawke’s Bay has a good range of businesses offering custom framing and a selection of art galleries often showing the work of local artists.

SPRING GARDENING…TIME FOR VISION
J
ust as interior decoration is a matter of personal taste so too is the presentation of your external space. Some people have ‘green fingers’ and enjoy spending as much time working on their section as they can. Others find gardening a chore and may opt for easy care, or low maintenance, sections. Easy care sections these days can be good looking with judicious use of pavers, foliage and other decorations. There’s a good selection of sculptures, statues and ornaments for gardens and who can resist the sound of trickling water? Not only are water features soothing they are a good source of water for birds.
and home-made compost. Later on vegetables will need feeding and you may need to apply liquid fertilizer, sheep pellets or any one of many products available.
to be able to ‘see’ the final product. Landscape designers can help in this respect and have tremendous creative ability.
On older sections trees can often pose a problem which is where a tree expert such as an arborist or tree surgeon can help.
You’ll need a wish list, an understanding of the climate, sun and soil and a budget! A plan of the section, to scale, will also be needed. Consider the immediate needs of your family and also how they might change in the future as the family ages.
Starting a garden from new is easier than taking over an established property although vision is required
A wander around any garden supply store is great for thinking about what’s possible these days: raised garden beds, pebbles and bark, privacy screens and no end of plant pots and pavers. Container gardening is ever popular and gives flexibility in that they can be moved around to create a new look. Pre-planted baskets, shrubs in pots, window boxes and flowers in unusual containers such as old boots, old bicycles, with appropriate drainage, can all create a stunning talking point. Spring is the time to do a stock take of your garden and feed the soil in preparation for planting flowers and vegetables. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to improving soil health including ready- made compost

FURNITURE FASHION
T
he world has changed in the last 18 months and with it so have attitudes towards our homes and lifestyles.
Last year, in particular, people spent so much time staring at four walls and a ceiling that they decided to experiment and be bolder in their approach to decorating and furnishing their home. Now people are looking for comfort and opportunities to relax at home and in the garden. With overseas travel off the agenda there’s also some extra finance available for some people to spend on upgrading their homes.
and cheerful stackable chairs up to full outdoor dining suites, lounge furniture, bistro tables and bar tables. Also available is a full range of shade umbrellas, awnings and sun loungers. All outdoor furniture needs to be robust as it will be subject to weather extremes. Cushions and furniture
with fabric are covered in weather proof materials while tables and chairs might be made to look like synthetic wicker or powder coated aluminium to resemble timber. Then there are plenty of natural materials available like timber that don’t need too much upkeep and are much more planet friendly.
Sustainability is very much at the forefront of our minds and as the world grapples with the issue of climate change we’re seeing furniture and furnishing trends taking on board the need to reduce the rate at which we deplete resources. Sustainability might mean buying wool carpet instead of synthetic, incorporating old with new or re-using and recycling materials. Natural colours, such as green and blue, are in vogue along with natural materials such as timber, stone, rattan and wicker. Texture is back too in cushions, rugs and wallpaper. Living room furniture such as modular sofas are still popular and are offered in a range of grey and blues. But in contrast velvet is making a comeback as a textile for sofas and suites. Popular right now are turquoise, pink and green. Another trend is to display one chair as a statement piece and the bolder the better- think orange, yellow or bold botanical prints. Ottomans are still on trend and leather suites are also making a comeback. Circular dining tables, which are good for when space is tight, are making a comeback along with the use of light timber. Dining suites with benches, rather than chairs, are also popular. As we approach summer thoughts turn to outdoor living and dining. We’re spoilt for choice with cheap
